New Orleans Invitational Billfish Tournament “Approved By IGFA”
Dania Beach, Florida, USA -- The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is in its third year of the Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Circuit, an international fishing competition that is expected to draw teams from all corners of the earth. The event will take place in March, 2002. The New Orleans Invitational Billfish Tournament has been named by IGFA as a qualifying event for the championship, and the winner of this tournament will be invited to bring their team of up to four anglers to compete in the championship. As a qualifying event, each participant in the tournament will receive a one-year membership in IGFA. The New Orleans Invitational Billfish Tournament is scheduled for June 14-16, 2001 in Port Eads, Louisiana. For further details, please contact Louis Freeman, Jr., phone 504-828-2886, fax 504-828-9902, email: lmfjr@automatek.com.
This is IGFA's third year in sponsoring a tournament series, and there is no doubt that it will be an exciting event that will attract international interest. So far, over 71 tournaments from 24 countries and 9 U.S. states representing over 10,000 anglers have already been invited to accept the challenge to send their teams to the event, and more tournaments are expected to be approved by IGFA in the near future. There were 59 qualifying events in 2000.
The international championship competition has been held in Kona, Hawaii the first two years. Currently several locations, including Kona are under consideration to hold the 2002 championship event.
IGFA is a 61-year-old nonprofit, membership-supported conservation organization best known for maintaining world gamefish records in freshwater, saltwater, fly fishing, and junior angler categories. IGFA members are located in approximately 125 countries. Recently IGFA has constructed its 60,000 square foot Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, Florida.

Subject: Great Fishing Trip
April 28th I had the extreme pleasure of fishing with Ed and Tammy Valencia today. . We left the C-Way Marina at 6AM sharp in an attempt to put some fish in the box before the wind started again. Ed and Tammy caught 50 Speckled Trout at least half of which were in the 2 to3 pound range. As people were picking up their boats at the end of the day they all commented on our catch. Both Ed and Tammy are experienced at fishing and even though I pride myself about working well with novices it was a nice change to have them aboard. We all had a lot of fun, and they have a lot of fish to take back to Denver. Thanks guys come back and see me real soon. If you would like to make a fun trip call Papa Joe 504-392-4409

Subject: Speckled Trout and Redfish
Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous. The decision I made to fish the ponds took the strong south winds out of the picture. George Troxell and his wife fished with me several years ago, so when the relatives came in from Salt Lake City for the Easter holidays they gave me a call. George and his brother Jeff, along with son Scott, and Chris Mauty had a fine day on the water. These guys normally fly fish the streams and rivers in Utah for fresh water trout, but certainly enjoyed the pull of an 18” speckled trout. We had 28 in the box by 9:30AM and decided to see if we could find a few reds that would stretch our lines. Although we managed to catch 8 or 9 the big fish eluded us, as we only had two above the 16” limit. Jeff I hope those pictures of that beautiful sunrise came out good, and all of you have a great holiday in New Orleans. May and June are the months for the BIG trout run in Barataria Bay. Call Papa Joe at 504-392-4409 to get your share. |

Subject: Bayou Bienvenue Report
Made a quick scouting trip out of Bayou Bienvenue this week. Tough fishing conditions with dense fog early and scattered thundershowers. A minimal tidal range further complicated the fishing. In spite of conditions, we found trout at every stop. The specks wanted a slow, drifting presentation near the bottom. With the darken sky, the fish wanted dark colors. Smoke and avocado plastics seemed to work best. Saw a boat catch one red and one large trout on live pogies, but plastics seem to be the fare du jour. We found our best results by drifting the deep holes in the bayou. We would catch a few each drift. We tried to anchor, only to find diminished action. We would motor back up wind and drift again to start catching more specks. Look for your fish to be holding suspended along the drop offs in deeper holes in the bayou. Drift through until you find a concentration of fish and continue to drift across that area. A cool front this weekend should reinforce this pattern into next week. While in town for the True Value Hardware convention, reps from Maurices Sporting Goods had the opportunity to see for themselves the hot new Deadly Dudley Lures by V & G Lures. They left late on Friday evening and hit large Redfish, flounder, Spanish Mackeral, speckle trout, and tripletail using various colors of the large and small Deadly Dudleys in the course of 2 ½ hrs. of fishing the shoreline of Lake Borgne with Fishing Guide Services of New Orleans. On board were Capts. Dee Geoghegan and Dudley Vandenborre, David Young of Cajun Quest T V, Wally Sexton and Andy Kaltin of Maurice Sporting Goods. Andy and Wally found out what all the ruckus is about along the Gulf Coast about this hot new bait. Dealers and sportsmen that interested in learning more about the bait can call 888-SPECK 36.
