Gang: Well, I made the wrong decision yesterday and opted to fish the bottom based on Wednesday's lukewarm reports. Woulda coulda shoulda... On another note, a fellow was medevac'd off of a sailing vessel off of Cape Mendocino a few weeks ago. He has been trying to track his vessel as it is now adrift, last seen a couple hundred miles off of Monterey. His latest modeling says that it should be 150-175 miles off of Morro Bay about now. But that could just as easily be 50 miles. The boat is 35-foot single-mast sailing vessel, with a dark blue hull. Name "Golden Rose." If any of you folks spots it, by all means get the latitude and longitude and report it to the Coast Guard and the owner Michael Holland 805-637-2878. And for safety's sake, when running in the dark be well aware that this vessel is adrift, unlit, and will be very difficult to see in the dark due to the hull's dark color. And sailboats are notoriously poor at showing up on radar. Be careful out there, and good luck this weekend. Eric Endersby Chief Harbor Patrol Officer MB Harbor Patrol |

Sat weather: The computer models show the wind coming up late saturday afternoon. Timing is always iffy so I would be ready to head in at the first sign of serious wind/whitecaps. The next window is not until next friday. |

Josh - from what I see so far, 10-20 with a 6 ft swell. Winds looks like it will built in the afternoon and by night get stronger. I am hoping to get out, fill up with fish and get in. I will watch the reports closely before I go. Maybe someone has a better forecast. |

Harrel and others: Although I'm now almost halfway around the world from the old homebase, I still dream about the tuna bite amping up where you are now. Yes- we sailed our 47 footer to New Zealand from Morro Bay after some Sea of Cortez time. So, we've trolled over 10,000 nms, hooking up some unbelievably big critters along the way. It takes 400# test trolling line, and even then we bend a lot of hooks. We're refitting in Auckland now and will sail for Fiji and Australia early next year. Have a great season! Wide open bite: we spent TWO HOURS in a free for all battle today. Two hours at one stop with boiling LFTs going off. When it was over we hag 20 fish: smallest was 31 llbs, largest was 40 lbs. We met Sarah from Scripps at the dock and she had all the albacore stomachs she could wish for. AND.. BJ caught a tagged fish that was released in La Jolla in 2001. Sarah called it in and BJ gets a check for $500.00 for returning the data capsule inside the fish! It was a day dreams are made of. THey are here! Will |

Tim, Thanks for the info. I only have the 600W Transom mount unit due to some concerns about getting the 1KW thru-hull in the right location. Sounds like during the winter, I need to make the jump to the better ducer. Guess I will have to play with the settings and see what happens. We will be on the radio with updates throughout the day and will post tomorrow night, no matter how late. Can't wait to hear that first reel go off. |

Good job gang. Figured the slugs were there based on looking at some of the best SSTS we've had in years. Next wind event will linger 7 to 10-days. Darn. I will not be in the hunt Friday due to childcare issues. I guess it all happens for a reason but I have a hard time dealing with it with this happening. Season is still young I tell myself. Good luck to those out Friday and early am Sat. |

Matt do you have the 1K transducer? Always us the low freq when fishing tuna. It’s a wider cone angle. I have the same unit 1833 C. Works great. With low freq though keep in mind you can’t be flying around at 15 knots and expect there to be a good picture. Do you have the high speed fairing block? I spent some time getting my unit dialed in. You can also adjust the SIG level. It deletes the week echo’s (like light blue) that you don’t need while tuna fishing allowing you to turn up the gain. Albies on my unit burn green and red. They look like worms if you will. Bait should come up a solid red like a big blob on the screen. Good luck to you and congrats to Stuart and others! Way to go guys. |

We will be watching weather and getting the boat ready this week. The last two years we have put in many many hours on the water for some iffy Albie fishing. Want to thank those boats that put in the time and effort ... Way to go Stu! Blackie Jr and Sr .... even if your not marking anything watch the birds! Last year was a soak under what bird activity there was produced even without anything on the meter. Any small mark stop on ... 1oz rubber core sinker and give it a half hour if you think they are there. Not sure what worked for the boats today, but if anything like last year you have to be patient. Killer B's will be running out of MB at 0430. I think we may start in the area of the finger of warm water at 35/00 and work out and north through the break. We will be on Ch. 68. Who else is going on Friday? quick question on sounders. I have a furuno navnet system with the black box fish finder. I never seem to see anything on the screen when fishing for tuna. It has a dual frequency transducer. I don't know if it's better to use the high of low frequency, dosen't seem to make a difference. Any Help? Thanks Matt |

Hey, I got this off the Diablo Canyon Report. It has the Web Address for the Buoys. Harrell, your right the cost of fuel is going nuts. Note: BUOY DATA - As a result of Hurricane Katrina, the Buoy, C-MAN, Ship, and Drifting Buoy Observations via www.ndbc.noaa.gov are unavailable as the National Data Buoy Center had been evacuated and infrastructure damaged. The extent of damage to any facilities and equipment is not fully known at the present time but the greatest problem appears to be restoration of the Internet infrastructure and power. Options for hosting NDBC's webpage at another location are being explored. Hourly buoy data can still be found on the web address below. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mtr/versprod.php?pil=OSO&sid=SFO |

Weather: Anyone looking for tuna better go tomorrow because when the wind comes back up, which is forecast to happen saturday, it will blow for a week or more according to the computer models. And the price of fuel will probably be over $4 at the rate it is going !! |

Just got back in Harrell pretty much nailed it. Was a pretty sloppy this morning on the way out but it calmed down nicely for the full speed ride back in ride back in. Had a very close call with a whale... We only ended up with 2 in the box but they were nice at 25 and 30lb. We should have done a lot better, had 3 nice fish come unbuttoned. All our fish came at 02/46 in 59.5 blue water. We ran out from there to the warmer water in the plume and found 62 degree blue water with no signs of life at all. Trolled back toward the barn and metered a large area of deep marks... 180-250 about 3 miles inside the previous numbers. Circled the area for a while chunking hoping to get them to come up but they didn't want to play. Should have stopped and dropped bait, but it was getting late and we had a long tow home. Water turned green at about 32 miles from the barn. If I were to go tomorrow I'd run to where we found the deep marks and soak bait. All the fish we hooked up in the area were large. |

Hey Dale I cant speak for the Gregor but owned a new 21 ft Bayrunner before they went under. If you go aluminum for blue water it has to be at least 3/16 preferably 1/4 on the bottom to keep it from oil canning.Trust me you can put enough bracing in a .095 thick hull to avoid the stretch. We babied our new boat but to no avail, buy fiberglass. Yes the fuel milage was awsome but the old saying if you want to dance you have to pay the fiddler. Good luck and hope i helped you from making the same mistake we did |

I just took a good, hard look at both the latest SSTs and Chloro pics. Based on combining best chances for finding bait where dirty green water is closest to warm blue water, I would begin just outside the Donut at 34.47 and 121.50 and follow the 50 line down. Another good bet is that water below and outside the Cape San Martin Buoy at 35.30 and 122.05 and follow the 30 line SW. This plume is the same body that the 16 fish to 45# were caught today (62-degrees) and is aprox 65-miles from the Rock. Like Harrell said, I would be ready to shut down on any deep marks and fish bait, plus heavy chrome. Hope this helps. Good luck guys. |

Seeing how no concentration of fish was found today, might suggest spreading out 10-miles apart to find the mother load. Well, here's a bit of good news from up-the-line today! Gary's fish were reportedly to 40-lbs. Per Bats- "Gerry(Doble) reported 16 Albacore at 36'11/122'41 and 36'18/122'43. The fish ranged from 10-45 pounds. The fish were taking trolled lures along with live bait and Fish Traps. The water was nice all day with some swell." Btw: I'm still looking for crew on Fri. |

Update: Just talked to Eric and he confirmed the two big fish but also lost a couple or three on bait. 02/46 were his numbers but he metered fish at 180 ft deep 3 miles inside those numbers. Anyone going tomorrow might want to soak some bait deep on the cold side of the break. He also said there was not much life on the outside. |

Here is what I think I know as of 4:30pm. Only two boats continued on out this morning because of the lump, but the ocean did get better all day and should be good for tomorrow. Only heard of 5 fish caught, three 8lb and two 25lb. I think Eric (Tyee) caught the big fish and in that plume we have been talking about. Two boats can't really cover a lot of territory so maybe tomorrow will be better if there are more boats out there. Dustin: I have not talked to Eric yet. Rick: Good to hear from you. Did you sail your boat all the way to the south pacific ?? |

Well Dale ... I have a Cabo 226 for sale that will be going pretty cheap with a ton of extras. If you want to get 50 miles offshore instead of 25 drop me an email. Dustin |

I bow to the experts. I have been looking into getting a 22ft Grager "Super Sea Hawk" Aluminum Boat, with a 120 HP outboard. It's almost half the price of other fiberglass boats. It fits my budget! Any feedback on the sea wortyness of these boats. I would like to be able to go out 25 miles when the albacore come in. Of course I know the weather would have to be good. Dale Rodriguez |

Harrell, Tell Eric if he calls that I got his message late because of flying in from Chicago. He is probably out of cell range or too busy filling the boat to call. We should have the boat ready in the coming weeks for when the HOGS show up! Dustin |

We are running for LFT tomorrow out of Morro. Hope to be on the water 4:30-5am. Right now it's looking like we'll start with that plume at 35 00/ 121 40 and work our way up the 1000 fathom line from there. Hopefully we'll get another good shot tonight as that break look like it's getting a bit soft. 35 30/ 122 00 is looking pretty good too. We'll be on 68 or my cell ... email if you want it. Anyone else? Tyee --- Farallon 25 |

I'm a grad student at Scripps in San Diego collecting albacore stomachs for my PhD. (Thanks for all the replies I got earlier from people about who to contact for albacore stomachs!) I'm headed up to Morro Bay on Thurs and will stick around a few days (hopefully I'll beg a spot on Virg's Friday trip). Anyone want to keep their stomachs for me? What with the weather turning bad in a few days, I could use all the stomachs I can get. Send me an email and I'll work out the details. If you're interested, there was an article written about my project in the Oregonian - describing my intentions towards all those stomachs and a bit of the scientific rationale as well. http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/bill_monroe/index.ssf?/base /sports/1124535452326821.xml&coll=7&thispage=1 Thanks and good fishin! |

I probably handle more F&G citations than any other attorney in SLO or S.B. County.Overlimits fines depend largely on the species and specific circumstances of each situation.Overlimit fines are typically the highest for salmon and white seabass.Overlimit fines for rockfish tend to depend upon whether the person was over the 10 fish total limit or just exceeded a sub-limit (ie cabezon) within the 10 fish limit. The existence or absence of F&G "priors" also tends to affect the amount of the fine imposed.Be careful about simply "forfeiting bail" as that will generally be recorded as a misdemeanor criminal conviction on your record....anyone with a specific problem can contact me CONFIDENTIALLY at my email jstulberg@stulberg.com or my office (805)544-7693...You should never discuss an alleged F&G violation on the WEB.....Hope that helps....jeff |

Hey JP I spoke to a DFG warden about what the fines were for overlimits. Basically it depends on the judge and the DA. The warden said it's becoming more common for the judge to make the fisherman buy a lifetime license. So, depending on your age that's between 609-370 bucks. Just an FYI. |

If you plan on fishing in the near future you had better fill up your boat today. It is only going to get higher by this weekend, if not sooner. |
