Subject: Report For 8-7-2000
Bryan Fisher of Pennsylvania started the week off with a full day inshore trip beginning at 6 AM. Bryan and his son Bryan arrived on time to find a heavy drizzle. They did bring rain-gear but by the time they put it on they were already soaked. We quickly loaded up with enough Mackerel to last the day and went to find the Striped Bass. The Bass were waiting for us as we got into fish right away. The "Bryans" landed about 20 fish with the biggest being 28". Since they were so wet, they cut the trip short at 11:15AM.....Mike Roscoe of NH had Tuesday morning planned for a half day trip. He brought along his father-in-law Bill, and brother-in-law David. We quickly loaded up with 60+ mackerel. No thanks to David who could count on one hand how many Mackerel he landed. However once we got to the Striper grounds it was David who landed the first of about 25 Bass caught on this trip. Most of the fish were in the mid twenty inch range..... Joe Kelly of NY had the next trip (half day). The weather started out fair but quickly turned to wet and windy. We spent at least 1.5 hrs. on Mackerel alone as they were scattered around the bay, with no large schools to be found. We ended up landing only 3 Stripers one up around 34". We also lost a few more. This trip proved to be quite hard on the spinning reels I use as well. By the time the trip was over I had completely exhausted my supply of spare reels and was looking forward to my trip to the tackle shop..... Wednesday Morning I was re-tooled with some new fishing reels as well as a few spares. I was planning to meet a new customer named Mark Bombard of ?. Mark had booked this trip back in mid-May. I arrived at the dock at 5:45 AM for the 6:00 AM trip. I picked up my paperback copy of "The Hungry Ocean" that I have been reading while waiting for customers to arrive. After reading 20 some odd pages I looked at my watch and realized it was almost 6:30 and still no customer. The Marine Patrol Warden walked down the dock and we exchanged stories while watching a couple "out of state" boaters race through the "no wake zone" at full throttle. Luckily for them the Warden came by truck and not boat, or they would have had another souvenier to remember Maine. I continued to wait for the customer until 7:15 AM, before finally heading up the river to put the Trina Lyn back at her berth at the Saco Yacht Club..... Thursday Morning regular customer Kevin Allen of Massachusetts arrived with his dad, Bob and son, Kyle. I nearly cancelled this trip before even getting out of my truck due the VERY dense fog. Visibility was about 60'. I knew that I was heavily booked in the coming days and that if I didn't take Kevin today, I wouldn't be able to fit him in before his vacation was over. I met Kevin at the dock just before our scheduled 6:00 AM start time. We hadn't got 100 yards from the dock when a lobsterman sitting in his truck on the pier called me on the marine radio, saying "there is a guy named Bombard here to meet you for his fishing trip". I radioed back that his trip was supposed to be on Wednesday and that he didn't show up. Later on Mark Bombard called me to apologize that HE apparently got the dates mixed up. Unfortunetely he lost his deposit and I lost a half days pay. Back to Kevins trip, we "idled" our way through the fog to the Mackerel grounds. we loaded up with about 100 Mackerel to last us the day, before idling to the Striper hole of the day. The first spot was dead as the "moon tide" was at its extreme low. We moved about a half mile to another rock pile and immediatly were into fish. We landed about 25 fish and lost at least 30 by noontime. We decided to go to get a few more baits and try one final spot. We didn't find much bait but we were able to grab a few more Stripers with what we had..... Friday morning Don Patenaude of MA had a half day arranged for 6:00 AM. Don brought along a couple relatives and his young son. we stayed with the Mackerel a little longer by customer choice. Once we hit the Striper holes we got into some real fat 24"-26" Stripers which they decided to keep four..... Greg Murphy of California had the second trip. He brought along his 4 year old "well behaved" son, as well as his sister and nephew. The Mackerel were very difficult to find this trip. Luckily we had some remaining from the previous trip. The Striped Bass were also a little elusive. We ended up landing only 5 Bass, mostly in the slot size range.... Phil Kellogg of NY, made his second trip this season aboard the Trina Lyn with a full day inshore trip. Phil brought along his wife Sue as well as her parents. The Mackerel were plentiful and we loaded up with about 80 baits within an hour. The Stripers were hitting immediatly at the first spot we hit. Sue had the biggest fish (AGAIN!!) at 29". Sue and her Mom decided they would retire to the dock after 4 hrs. After dropping them off at the dock we went back out to try to find a few more Mackerel for "good measure". Unfortunately the Mackerel were all but gone. We took what we had and went for the Stripers. The Stripers also proved to be taking the weekend off as we were only able to hook up (and lose) five times the rest of the day..... Sunday, I took the day off and played "tourist" as I went and laid on Old Orchard Beach to recharge the batteries and work on my tan Trina Lyn Fishing Charters Capt. Subject: Report for week ending 7/30/00
Clear DayBob Shepard of Mass. started off the week with a half day trip. The Mackerel were abundent as we only used about 45 minutes before getting 50+ baits. The Striped Bass were a little less happy to cooperate with us. We only landed a few fish and lost about 7.... Tuesday Morning, Dr. Phil Rice of Maine had his relatives out for a half day trip starting at 6 AM. We found plenty of Mackerel and then switched over to the Stripers which allowed us to land 4 and lose about 15.... Chris Giugliano of NJ brought his wife Cathy and two young children for the second trip on Tuesday. We stayed with the mackerel a little longer on account of the children. Upon hitting the Striper hole we found the fish to be hitting immediately. We landed at least 10 fish and lost about 25 as we were all having trouble getting the hook set on these fish.... Randy Collins just happened to be standing on the dock as we returned from the second trip. Although, I had been booked the night before for this time, the people did not show up and Randy happily got his family together and we were off. The Mackerel were still hitting pretty good and we had our bait within 30 minutes. We went to a spot for Striped Bass and found the action to be a little slow after 20 minutes. I have a general rule that if the Stripers don't hit within 20 minutes they just are not there and I'll always move to another spot. We hit another hole not very far away and were quickly greeted with double hook-ups. This lasted the duration of the trip and we never had to make another move. We ended up landing at least 20 Stripers and who knows how many we lost.... Wednesday Morning repeat customer Steve Dandeneau from CT arrived with his boys, Jim and Pat for a full day trip. We got about 100 Mackerel to last the day and then hit the Striper grounds. I couldn't think of a better place to start then the same place I finished the day before, and sure enough the Stripers were again producing immediate results. We stayed at this spot until about 10:30 when we headed into the dock to get some lunch at the take-out stand. (Thanks again Steve for buying lunch) We also picked up Steves wife and Daughter. We went back out and grabbed another 25 Mackerel, and hit another Striper spot. Again it didn't take long for these guys to hook-up again. We landed at least another 12 fish bringing us up to a total of around 25 fish landed on the day. Most of the fish were between 22" & 34"..... Unfortunetly I had to cancel all the trips on Thursday, due to heavy rain and seas.... Friday morning the weather had improved enough to fish, but was still pretty "sloppy". Tracy Craig of NY started off the day with a half day trip at 6 AM. We loaded up with 60+ Mackerel within 30 minutes and then quickly headed over to the Striper holes. We were into fish immediately again. This time we started getting some bigger fish mixed in with the slot size fish. We were only able to fish one rod at a time since the fish were hitting so quickly. We kept 3 keepers and released about 10 more including a 34" very fat fish weighing around 23 lbs. Tracy was seasick most of the trip so he asked me to head back to the dock early.... Joe Raymond had the 2nd trip of the day along with his 2 boys and Dan Bushallow all of NY. We had a little trouble finding the Mackerel as it took about 1.5 hours to get 50 baits. However once we hit the Striper hole we quickly found several accomodating fish. Including a 39" Striper landed by Joey (jr). We ended up landing over 15 Stripers overall.... Ed Divine had the 3rd half day trip of the day along with his family of NY. Again the Mackerel acted a little finicky as we ended up trying several spots before finally finding the jackpot. We finally got to a Striper spot I expected to be hot, only to find poor water clarity and alot of debris from the recent stormy conditions. The 2nd spot we hit had several fish and we were able to land at least 12 fish of which we kept three.... I decided to take Saturday and Sunday off, which I plan to do more often, due to all the extra local boats out fishing making it difficult to fish my normal spots without giving away too many secrets..... - Check back soon for more....- Captain Todd

Subject: Clear Day Updated 7/24/00
Monday Morning Rick Lewandowski of NY had a half day trip scheduled for 6 AM. We found 5 to 7 foot breaking waves at the mouth of th river which we blasted through with a few good "thuds". Had there been children on board I would of cancelled the trip. Once we got out to the Mackerel grounds the seas were 10 to 12 feet but not breaking in the deeper water. We quickly landed 60+ Mackerel to use as Striper bait. Rick preferred to fish in behind some of the islands where the seas were a little calmer and seasickness had set in. We landed severel Striped Bass including one around 32"... Tuesday was a day off for the Trina Lyn....Wednesday was a "bittersweet" trip offshore for Groundfish. We landed 30 good size "keeper" Cod by 11 AM. Then the customer from NY asked me to take them back inshore to try for Mackerel and then Striped Bass. After getting back to the Mackerel grounds the customer asked me to fillet and skin the 30 Codfish, which I did. This took about almost 1.5 hrs, while the customers fished for the Mackerel to be used as Striper Bait. Once the codfish were processed and packed we went Striper fishing with the remaining time. The customers were into the Stripers immediately. They also landed two "keepers" and lost several more. Once back at the the dock they asked me to fillet and skin the Stripers. After I had the Stripers processed and bagged I noticed the customer who booked the trip had already headed for his vehicle with not even as much as a "Thank You", nevermind a "tip" for the extremely successful fishing day and the time spent cleaning the fish. Although I am unable to predict the future, I am quite sure I will "be booked" the next time this customer attempts to book a charter.... Thursday was a half day, triple header starting off with Maggi Winn of Ashland NH, along with Brad, Beth, and 5 year old Adam. We stayed with the Mackerel for most of the trip by customer choice. We switched over to the Bass with about an hour remaining and was able to land a nice 27" fish... Next was John Tehan with his two young boys (Patrick and Johnny) and friend PJ. John and his boys had very little fishing knowledge but they seem to learn quickly. After Patrick had caught most of the 60+ Mackerel we headed for Striper territory. Everyone caught several fish including a 39" fish about 25 lbs by John (the rookie fisherman). Maybe now he will be trading in his golf clubs for fishing rods (but, I doubt it).... The 2:30 trip was booked by Steve Zylstra of Michigan with his 3 children (Sarah, Andy, and Tim) between 10 and 17 years old. Steve told me his kids were good fishermen, but I hear that from alot of Dads. However, Steve wasn't kidding. These kids almost had to hand the rod over to Dad, just so he wouldn't go home skunked. At one point Andy was 3 for 3 with every cast hooking and landing a Striper. I lost count of how many fish we actually landed but it was ALOT.... Friday Morning Rick and Kia Gary of Texas brought their son Adam and their friend Sue from Mass. After everyone took part in landing the 50+ Mackerel, we switched over to Striped Bass. The Stripers were a little finicky this morning and we only ended up landing a few "keeper" Striped Bass. However I did squeeze out a good Texas recipe for Baby Back Ribs from Rick .... Next that day was Anthony Piriano of NY and his father Jon, brother Joe and brother-in-law Don. We had a little difficulty locating the Mackerel as a few Bluefish seem to be showing up. We finally caught about 25 "baits" and went Striper fishing with the remaining two hours. We were able to land a few fish that were "keepers".... Saturday Kieth Cranshaw and his gang from NH were running about an hour late for the start of their half day trip. Again the Mackerel were being difficult. We did get enough to get a few Stripers to the boat including a 38" 23 lb. monster.... The 2nd half day trip was booked by Randy Arellano from Long Island NY, with his family members Tony, Ramon and Natalie. We used about 90 minutes getting the Mackerel and then switched over to the Bass. We were into the Stripers from the minute we threw our first bait in the water until we ran out of time. I would guess we landed 12 - 15 Stripers and lost another 15 Stripers.... Sunday Morning was a half day trip with Beth and Peter Moschetti of Mass and their two very well behaved boys ages 6 and 10. We stayed with the Mackerel which were abundent this trip for nearly 2 hours so the young boys could "load up". We found the Stripers to be a little sleepy this trip with us landing only two fish and losing another half dozen or so...Check back soon for more - Captain Todd

Subject: Old Orchard Beach Fish Report - 7-17-2000
Here is the report for 7/17/00 The past week was a little slower then the week before at least business-wise. However the fishing action picked up even more with nearly all trips having double-digit landing of Striped Bass. There were no "offshore" trips last week. Jim Churchill and his daughter of Houston Texas started off their half day trip on a rainy Monday with a ton of Mackerel before we switched over to Striped Bass. We had no problem landing several Striped Bass between 25 - 30 inches. We also broke off on one fish that seemed to be a "big one". Tuesday was an off day. On Wednesday morning brothers Bill, Mark and Gary Johnston of Vermont had a full day scheduled. These guys have fished with me every year. They never fail to bring the Captain some of that sweet stuff Vermont is famous for. Last year it was a quart of maple syrup, this year a HUGE box of maple sugar candies. (Thanks again guys) These guys have caught many many fish between 20"- 30" with me in the past. So this year they asked if we could try and target just the "big ones". We ended up taking a trip about 5 miles to the southwest, away from the regular spots I fish. We landed a few fish in the slot size as well as one nice and fat 35" fish weighing about 19 lbs. Thursday was another day off for me, which made a great day to catch up on some boat maintainance. Friday, regular customer Bryan Callaghan of Albany New York made another trip aboard the Trina Lyn. We landed our 50+ Mackerel (bait) in less then 45 mins. and we were off to the wonderful world of Stripers. We ended up with about 15 fish of average size on this half day trip. On the second trip of the day Jack Wagner and family from Buffalo New York were on board for another half day. We stayed with the Mackerel a little longer then normal so his young children could have a little extra fun. Afterwards we switched over to Striped Bass where we landed around 10 Stripers. Jack also was kind enough to give me the "real" Buffalo Wings recipe. Saturday Jay Moody and his 9 year old son from Buxton Maine had relatives John and Rich up from Nebraska. Rich is a high school football coach as well as a big college football fan. These guys had the best half day trip of the year aboard the Trina Lyn. After getting 60 or so Mackerel they went on to catch nearly 30 Striped Bass. The majority of the fish were between 22 and 32 inches. Later that day another regular customer Reno Levesque of CT brought along his boys Randy and Jeff who had his girlfriend Heather alongside. They didn't catch quite as many fish as the morning trip but still managed to land nearly 15 Striped Bass. Reno ended up with the largest fish again this year. Sunday brought about 1.5 inches of rain, therefore it was a great day to sit inside and update the web site. Check back soon for more, Todd |

Subject: Old Orchard Beach Fishing Report
The past week has been extremely busy as usual for the 4th of July week. Thankfully the fish were willing to cooperate with us. All the charters in the past week were "inshore". The mackerel fishing has started to become more consistent with us finding these "baitfish" fairly quickly on every trip over the past 10 days or so. I usually like to get 40-50 of these baitfish for a half day of Striper fishing. The livewell aboard the Trina Lyn can easily hold up to 100 mackerel for a full day of Striper fishing. We were able to get these baits without much more then an hour of time. The Striped Bass have started to show up a little better over the past week as well. We are starting to see more fish landed per trip and also some bigger fish being landed. We have also lost a couple of what I believe were huge fish. Tony Fernandez of Mass. had a full day trip last Sunday. We used about an hour getting 100 or so Mackerel and then it was off to the Stripers. The first fish was already hooked up before we could even get the 2nd pole in the water. These guys ended up landing several fish on this sunny Sunday. Later that day, I ran a half day trip with Joe Santos of Massachusetts, Joe and his crew ended up with a few nice sized Striped Bass after we had to try a few dry spots. Monday Morning Mike Belli brought out his son Isaak on his 16th Birthday for a half day trip, Both Isaak and Mike landed a couple fat "slot" size fish. Then on the 2nd trip Monday Bill Briggs of Georgia brought along some friends from upstate New York for another half day trip. Among the Stripers we landed was a nice 34.5" Fat Bass. Tuesday Jim and Del Lapointe of Mass. made their annual return to Maine. They landed nearly 20 Stripers on this full day trip. Most of the fish were in the slot range with a couple up around the 31" mark. Thursday Scott St. Martin of Mass. returned for a half day trip the bait was a little difficult to locate as were the Stripers. This was the only trip of the week where we couldn't actually land a Striper. We had 3-4 hook-ups, with all of them getting away. Jerry Goss of VT. had the 2nd trip (half day). Jerry and Caroline landed landed ALOT of fish, I lost count around 10. I don't know if there is any correlation to them bringing the Captain some "Real Vermont Maple Sugar Candies" and catching all these fish. (thanks again, Jerry). Mike and Ken Mckay made one of their several visits aboard the Trina Lyn. Unfortunatly we were only able to find a few willing Striped Bass on this half day trip. The 2nd trip brought along Steve Boucavalous and his family from Old Town Maine for a half day trip. Although we were cut short by rain we still ended up with a few "keepers"... Pete Luca of Vermont made his annual weekly visit to Maine. Pete books the boat every year for an entire week, fishing all day for Striped Bass. Every year I look forward to seeing Pete as he has become a great friend instead of “just a customer”. Pete knows the area and fishing grounds so well I find myself asking him where he thinks we should try fishing next. Of course he always gives me the same ole sly answer “wherever the fish are biting”. Pete brought his buddies Ron and Eddie as he does every year, this year he also took his grandson Jason along for the first time. We had another great week of fishing. We saw all kinds of weather from bright sunshine to thunderstorms to fog so thick you could barely see the end of your fishing pole. We caught several fish each day and Pete and his gang always caught there limit on “keepers”. This year we didn’t catch the huge fish like in past years, but we did get some nice fat and scappy fish.... |
