Forecast has been changing all week but, that said, I'm not at all thrilled about the trend I'm seeing for Friday fishing. Not confidence-inducing....early trough coming down the coast, increasing onshore gradients, a miserable high seas forecast that has been gale level at times uphill of the grounds, a constantly changing wind model for Friday based on the GFS model's inability to deal with this early trough.... Friggin' conspiracy of poop... But...we'll see and the towel isn't being thrown in yet...this is one of those times where we just have to keep a constant eye on developments...and the funny thing is...well, it's not funny so forget it. Tough forecast to nail with confidence, that's all.... Dave My Three Sons |

If you don't like the current weather forecast just wait 6 hrs for the next one because it can and probably will change that quick. In fact the buoys are coming down right now ! What does this mean ?? Don't know ! |

ok - wind is at 10-20 - waiting for next forecast... Please confirm if you will be going if the winds are at 10-20... I am all about safety first.....Is 10-20 not fishable for the anglers willing to take the pounding? I need the knowledge from the Morro crew |

Weather/SST; It would appear that the friday window has closed? 10-20 when it has been blowing for days is not a good forecast especially when the swell is forecast to hit 11 ft saturday !! The wind has cooled the surface but you can still see the plume as 59 degree (green scale) water which will probably pop back up when the wind lays down. The computer models indicate tues/wed for the wind to come down, we hope ! |

I like how you think (Theredman) Steve. Go ahead, go out and catch-N-release. Hey, It's not your fault if your fishing for LFT's in 240 ft or less of water. (And on the bottom) If one of those rotten 30- Lb lings come up on your hook....Just release it. And do the same with that 20- Lb snapper. Etc. Etc. |

Good afternoon fisherman; Just came in from my bi monthly meeting of the CAMBRIA fishing club ,,,,, and I hate to be the guy that gives you the BAD news ,,, but the DEPT OF FUN AND GAMES has decided that you have caught all the rock fish for the year ,,as of SEPT 30 the rock fish season is CLOSED. So I would encourage to go out and have your last fling , if the weather permits . You can still catch rockfish from SHORE after that date , if you can find a hole deep enough . So for all you salt water fisherman like me , we have been SCREWED AGAIN , pay for a year licence and fish less than 4 months , if you throw in the wind we probaly got about two actual months of fishable weather. Oh well I guess thats why we live in this great state of confused CA. Blackie Sr / Killer B,s |

Hey guys just a question on proper etiquette on when and how to approach other boats when called in for a bite. I don’t want to be the guy spoiling a bite or have one go south because I called in other boats. Information such as the approach, reasonable distance and any other recommendations would be great. It seems to me that helping each other out especially when fuel is over $3.00 per gallon sure can make for a lot of happy anglers rather than a few really pissed off ones. |

Sorry for the late post but we had a great trip on the Princess fishing sat. It was a last minute decision it was 7:00 pm and fri when we decided to go. Got on the boat at 10:00pm and headed to the donut. The first troll fish at 7:30am and by 9:30 10:00 am we had 30 fish then Dennis the skipper said their is a bite going 3 miles ahead of us and away we went. It turns out it was Harold Davis who called us in and we slid up behind him and started a chum line and then BENDO the boat lit up It looked very promising but yea (I said but) 2 knuckel heads in 2 boats came blasting through the chum line not 150 ft from the bow of the princess and sent the bite away it was unfortunate because their was enough fish for everyone. The way these boats approched us was very stupid. We tried to get them to stop before they did this but of course they had no idea what they were doing one of the boats was so close to the stern you could have thrown a dean and hit hit his boat.Anyway we ended up with 60 lf 44lb was jackpot I spent all day monday canning 71 jars I'm set for the season Also thanks to Bud 2nd skipper Sergio bait man Burl cook great trip for everyone. PS Special thanks to Harold Your a team player. |

It's been a while since I've fished Morro, but I haven't forgotten some of the butt kickings we've had up there. Any info appreciated. Thanks, Bruce |

SST/Chlorophyll/weather: The wind has driven the plume that has been holding the fish south and out, centered at 34:45 and 121:45 which is about 45-50nm. There is new plume developing on the 35:10 line and is just inside 121:50 and hopefully heading closer. It has been my observation over the years that when these little plumes shoot out of the main body of warm water they often hold albacore. The chlorophyll shows that the blue water pretty much overlays the warm water and the colder water is pretty green/dirty. NWS and the UCAR computer models still show a short break in the wind friday but blowing again saturday and sunday with tuesday looking very good. The wind outside (100+ miles) will still be blowing friday so it will probably be lumpy. |

Leaning towards running out of Morro on Saturday. My only problem is my boat lost a wheel bearing three weeks ago in Santa Cruz so that is where my boat is. If the BIG fish are still being caught on Thurs I will go get the boat in SC and pull it on down to Morro for the slugs. I will be leaving Saturday as soon as I can get bait. See you guys at the dock. |

Great SST last evening: The plume that has been holding the fish has moves south about 10 miles and in as close as 121:25. The brave souls that fished yesterday went 10 miles further south to find the fish but they did find them with counts of 20+. This wind may be coming down thursday ?? |

Well that was fun. Got baited up, ran out about 6 miles and heard the Admiral was coming in. He was at 30 miles and the wind was at 30. He couldn't do trolling speed without crashing waves over the bow. So instead of fighting the day, gave it up. Too bad - great bait but it will freeze. |

My dad, Pete and myself left the harbor at 4:45 with a good mix of chovies and dines and two ex-large bags of dead bait from our not so successful trips. We were about 5 miles behind Seeker Jim and Waverunner (Gary & Matt Moore) and 10 miles behind Harold Davis on his boat (Costalotta) the Princess was out at 04 and 46. I could here Bushwacker, Family Man, BBQ, and others heading out behind. I felt this was the best coverage we have had and this fleet would surely find them. About 7:15 Harold called out that he had a couple fish at ? and 41 we were about 9 miles from him and not long after that Jim called out ? and 37 he had fish. Then Waverunner 07 and 32. Everyone was saying there water temps were like 62.2 to 62.7. I was wondering what I should do radio fish or just believe that because I was in the same temp and the water was a beautiful color to keep the jigs in and not run to the numbers being called out. I decided to stay on a line between Harold and Jim favoring Jim's direction because if I didn't get bite I was going to head for the inside break. For a spread we had a zucinini broom tail Zuker starboard outside and a pink/blk broom tail Zuker middle starbaord, purple cedar plug deep out the back, middle port mex flag feather Zuker, grn/blk feather Zuker port outside. 8:45 the beginning of what will change my life forever began. The purple cedar plug out the back went off I slowed the boat to about 4 knots and the starboard rod went off. I felt I better becareful because the the purple cedar plug rod had my Torium 30 with 40lb line and it was zzzzzz off line quick if it had been on a bigg reel I would have went a little further. Pops had the Torium, Pete know the drill grabs his bait rod throws a little bait. I left the starboard rod hang and cleared the other rods. Pete bait fished while reeling in the other rod that was next him in the holder. I grabbed my bait rod tossed some more bait (dead) and Pete says "I'm on". About that time I experienced the same amazing feeling "I'm on" I put the rod in the holder and went over to were my dad had his fish to color and right at the boat the he came unbuttoned. Pete and I told him no big deal grab a bait rod or one that is hanging. I grabbed another bait stick and tossed some more bait and fish boiled around the and wham "I'm on". Put that one in the holder went and grabbed the rod that was hanging reeled on it for a while boy these fish were grumpy very tough fighters it was a blast. Kept throwing bait fish boiled more and more Pete "I'm on" "I'm on". It was a complete adrenaline rush we could other boats experienceing the same thing. Jim was in eye sight and I called him over and he and Brian pulled up and immediately were bent. This went on til about 10:15 1 troll fish and 10 bait fish one on a megabait Pete got it. Harold called Jim and said he was on a stop and better get over there. Harold was so out of breath I knew he was killing em. We went that direction slid in hooked one and broke off 40lb line. The Princess looked like they pulled obout 20 fish off Harolds call. We split and headed toward were we had luck earlier for nada. I decided to pick a line that was toward were we put the gear in the water to start the day. We went about 4 miles and the starboard outside went off I slowed the boat again and the starboard middle went off. Same routine throw bait get bait rods in the water and we were on again. Large aggressive sardines seem to work best but we were getting low on them and the dead bait was getting low too. We did get them to boil and it was amazing it started all over again "I'm On". We put 11 more in the box well on the deck we did get some to fit in the box. Back on the troll and not 10 minutes and the same 2 rods went off lost one. We couldn't get them to go and called it 2:15 head in a let the work begin. |

Went out to 07,38 today with my buddy Tom on the Bushwacker and caught a nice grade of LF's. Small fish were mid tweties and larger one's were low forties. Stopped short of our numbers when we saw someone bent. Fished bait that was good for 9 slugs in an hour with some casualties. Only could scratch 4 more for the rest of the day, but the triples and quads made up for it. Good luck if you go. Doug |

Ran out on a 230 about 45 miles and turned north for 8 fish, all grandes. 5 on the troll, all on black/purple feathers & 3 bait fish. That stop was a triple hookup on baitfish, was a start to a great bait bite, but Waverunner's 8 ft shark came over & chomped off the back 1/3 of a toad & shut down the bite. We managed to land the other 2/3s of that fish & I'll bet it still wighed 30 lbs. Great day on the water. Harold Davis must have been smiling, we were the lone Farallon amongst a fleet of Davis boats for awhile. |

Waverunner ran out to between 33-43 miles and fished at 07 and 32 for most of the day. Got 3 troll fish and 7 bait fish. Fish ran between 22 and 51 pounds and had a great fighting spirit. It took a long time to pull in the bait fish as they were really full on fight. Lost 2 troll fish (one broke the 80 pound leader) and 4 bait fish. Had a long encounter with an 8 foot blue shark. Even had a sea lion chasing one of our albies but he lost. A little bumpy going out but very fishable. The run home was very comfortable. The main bite was between 9:30 and 11:30 but fish were picked up on and off all day. The bait was mostly small anchovies but if you could pick out the larger 'dines, they worked better. Tomorrow's forecast will keep me home but they are close enough to try. |

The forecasting has been off lately so this upcoming wind event may not pan-out as predicted. Fish caught into 30-miles could be workable with moderate wind and seas, given a solid boat and experienced crew. Run uphill on the inside then work down with the seas on your aft quarter to get to the main grounds. I have 4-days to fish beginning Sunday but have yet to decide which direction I will go. Based on NWS forecasting, I'm leaning toward chasing those elusive billfish, mahi, and tails off the warm banks of OC. Option #2 is to roll the dice and hope for fishable seas off Morro. Anyone willing and able to team up for option #2 in sloppy but possibly fishable seas Monday, Tuesday, and or Wed? |

The previous post was John Lindsey's weather forecast from PG&E DCPP. It didn't include the wind forecast which is for strong (25kt) winds tomorrow and already Cape San Martin is pushing 20kts. It didn't happen today like it was forecast but I doubt we will be lucky twice. |

I just got this e-mail, looks bad tomorrow. =========== DCPP Weather Forecast for Saturday 09/03/05 ============ SEA/SWELL: Today's 3 to 5 foot northwesterly (290°) swell (with a 7-11 second period) will continue through Sunday morning. An upper-level trough off the west coast will move inland tonight accompanied by increasing northwesterly winds. These winds will generate a 5 to 7 foot northwesterly (295°) sea/swell (with a 5-9 second period) on Sunday afternoon and will continue at this height and period through Wednesday. Today's 1 to 2 foot southern hemisphere (220°) swell (with a 16-18 second period) will build to 2 to 3 feet (with a 15-17 second period) on Sunday. This southern hemisphere swell will continue at this height but (with a 13-15 second period) through Friday. Typhoon NABI south of Japan reached sustained winds of 140 kts a couple of days ago and is now a mere 115 kts today. In any case, swell from this tropical cyclone is not expected along the Diablo Canyon coastline. A second trough is indicated for midweek with another increase in northwesterly winds and sea/swell on Thursday and Friday. |

Does anyone know what the current forcast is for the MB tuna areas? I expected it to blow up today, so I chickened out. I don't know about the outside, but the inside has been nice all day with huge amounts of birds feeding off Cayucos. I'm painting a chimney, and it's hard not to fall off the roof watching the ocean. hey John The most productive numbers Fri was35.04 121.46 We did the best on Black and purple fish traps trolled way back with 3 oz diamond shaped heads at 6.5 mph.I am believer in florocarbon even for trolling. The fish are big use 40# we were 3 for 5 yesterday with 1 broken leader and 1 swivel pulled into.We had a blast it was worth the ride. |

More Good news ! A lot of fish being caught at those closer nunbers. Three boats that I know of have 40-50 fish all over 20 lbs. Suggestion: I see a few postings with no location numbers and though pictures are great they don't help the guys going the next day. Would be great to have numbers and details included in the postings. |

Fished with Paul on the P/V Flyer yesterday. Got an early start (left MB harbor at 3 a.m.). Got near thurs numbers @ 7 a.m. and dropped 1 jig in the water (we weren't really rigged up yet . Got a jig strike in 5 minutes...it was total chinese firedrill and we tried to get our act together. We had them boiling around the boat with only 1 bait in the water. We got two more bait fish out of that stop. We soaked bait on come killer marks for another 30+ minutes with no takers. Began trolling and got another jig fish and then another bait fish. Soaked a long time after that for no more bait fish. Began trolling again and got one an hour later on the fish trap back a ways. We trolled from 11-4 for nada. Stopped and soaked baits on 1 good mark. We were fishing the same general area as everyone else. Nice quality fish, 30+ pounders. Man do those things pull! We were 6/6, with 3 bait fish, two on black/purple zukers, and 1 on swimbait. Heard of a few YT caught and 1 nice 60 pound bluefin. Got back to the dock at 8 pm. I just woke up! Fun day, hopefully they'll come in a little closer. Thanks Paul for the ride...it was way better than fishing rockfish!!! lat, steve |

Got late start and fished 04/46, put lines in about 10:00am and first hookup within seconds. Metered fish at 250ft and 100ft. Could only get one bait fish. Scratchy jig strikes with last one on the way in 37nm from MB. Ended day with 5 out of 6 in the boat with ~25# average. The birds and signs are more prevalent at the 30 nm temp break. |

The early report: Good news and bad news; the bad news is it is whitecapping already and the good news is a fish was just caught at 35:04 and 121:34 which is 10 miles closer !! Let the games begin !! ( as soon as the wind lays down) |

Friday Tuna Killer B's was on the water early and started in the area of 00/35 for nada. We were called in on an early morning bite by Pices and reel busy in the area of 04/46 and farmed one early. The bite was scatchy all day for us and we only hooked and boated one other fish 33lbs. Sounded like the same for most of the other boats out there. No birds at all and very little sign of life where we caught the fish. The water was good color and 61+ degrees. Both our hook ups came on the same zuchini clone. Fishtraps seemed to be the ticket for some others. The one fish we caught was stuffed full of large deans, Can't believe he was still eating. we even tried a slow troll with Rapalas for nada. Good co-operative effort by the guys on the water today, thanks to all who shared info. Guess we will have to wait till next week to fill the frezer |

Saturday weather: The Cape San Martin buoy is blowing 14/16 kts now and the wind came up out where the boats were fishing today. It will probably be sloppy tomorrow and it could get worse . The forecast is now 10-15 for tomorrow so be careful ! |
