Wes,
All our fish were on bait and not from a jig stop either. Not a single Jig fish put on the boat yesterday ....wich makes two years now for me that we have had to fish meter marks, bird life, and foamers without the boat getting stopped from the jigs.
After trolling around the fleet for an hour or so with only one knockdown that didnt stick we decided to soak baits next to the Prevailer that previously had been stopped. Patience! thats all I can tell you. We were metering marks down at 70 ft so used 2oz rubber core sinkers to get down. First two fish came on the deep soak ...then after tossing a few baits randomly we would have them foaming at the boat and catch them on flyline. Not realy a secret .. just be patient and pay attention to your surroundings.

Congrats you guys!

Would you mind doing a little bait fishing 101 here?

Do you use the finder to pick a spot to soak bait? Were they flylined or weighted? How long in a spot do you soak a bait if it doesn't get bit? How much are you chumming during all this?

If I don't get a damn baitfish soon...

5 years of Albacore fishing and not a single bait fish yet!

Just got back and got the fish cleaned. Launched at Moss at 3am with a nice load of tiny chovs. We hit the first break at about 30 miles and decided to run through it to the numbers that were more productive yesterday. Hit a very hard break at 40 miles, from 58 to 61 in less than half a mile. First jig was hit within 20 minutes of being wet. Couldn't bring them to the boat with bait. Next jig went off around 9am, again no bait action. We saw jumpers and worked the inside edge of that break for several hours only scratching up 1 more troll fish. Fish were in the mid 20's and the weather was great. On the way in, the inside break had moved to within 20 mile of Moss.

Here is the scoop for the day. The fleet was pretty well spread out north-south 40-60 out when Chris Heimlich, of Maneuver fame, on the Adventura found the fish at 35 14 and 122 02 around 1 pm. He managed to do this without a temp gauge, and the fleet homed in.

He and another boat managed a reasonable bait stop after some jig strikes. We arrived third about 20 minutes later and immediately got hooked on a jig, but it shook. We continued trolling and over the next hour managed two nice fish (20-30 pounds). We tried the bait thing with no luck for a couple hours, so started the troll again. A couple other boats managed well on bait, as they seemed to keep the school near them. About a dozen boats ended up there, most all getting some fish I believe.

We trolled in the general vicinity until about 5pm for 3 more nice 30 pounders. Weather was beautiful all day, wind not more than 6 or 8 knots at times, but generally much less. Funny thing, in the area that everyone was hooking up there was little if any bird, whale, or dolphin life. Water was 62.4 there.

That's it, long day with lots of running, but for us at least a great day and no whale shit. Sorry Jay! And thanks again Chris. Go FRS!!!

Fish on Test Cookie with the Freemans and Chuck Kemnitz and son. 150 nm coveraged. Started out of MB on a 250 mag. dirty water inside, good signs, celaned up around 35 15 & 120 45 or so. Hweaded south west and got up to 61.0 F sea Temp. At 35 07 & 121 51 saw a school of 10-12 Lb jumpers moving fast. Trolled through but no takers. Soaked bait in the area for nothing. No bait or birds in that area. Worked saouth 5-7 miles then back to the jumper spot, then woirked inside to the break and saw nothing. Did see numerous whales today, inside and out. Either Blues or Finback on the outside, while trolling behind them we spotted a "slick"" and went to investigate, it was eitehr puck or shit, we to a sample and noted it smelled rather bad! Got it in the home refregator much to the wifes dismay!
So the end of the story is we had a shitty day, saw jumpers, only caught whale shit.

Fished out of PSL today with Mark on the Misstress. We headed SW (212?) hoping to hit that warm water plume. We found it, but no fish. Followed it all the way out to 40 miles before turning back. 60.7 was the highest temp. Saw some bait balls, a huge pod of dolphin, some birds, but no fish. Water was clear blue...looked good. Hope the folks got them up N...we were all by ourselves all day.
best fishes,

Heard another boat say "jumpers all around us.

I called John Lindsey this morning and it sounds like it could get very windy if the trough moves a little more east. This guys foecast is the best and I thank I will go with it.

Peter

SEA/SWELL:

Today's 3 to 5 foot northwesterly (295°) sea/swell (with a 7-10
second period) will continue at this height and period through
through tonight.

Combined with this northwesterly sea/swell will be a 1 to 3 foot
southern hemisphere (215°) swell (with a 14-16 second period)
through tonight.

Increasing northwesterly winds along the California coastline will
produce a 4 to 5 foot northwesterly (290°) sea/swell (with a 5-10
second period) on Saturday morning, further increasing to 5 to 7
feet on Saturday afternoon through Sunday.

A 3 to 5 foot west-northwesterly (275°) swell (with a 7-15 second
period) will develop along our coastline on Monday, decreasing to
2 to 4 feet (with a 7-13 second period) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

An intense storm near Antarctica will produce the largest southern
hemisphere swell of the season. This southern hemisphere (215°) swell
will arrive late Thursday at 1 to 2 feet (with a 19-21 second period),
building to 2 to 3 feet (with a 18-20 second period) next Friday 16th
of September. This swell is expected to peak next weekend at 3 to 5
feet (with 16-18 second period).

We launched ot of Morro yesterday. On our way to the donut we came upon a very large paddy. The water was 58.6 degrees and clear green. We fished the paddy San Diego style for to yellow tail 20 an 25 lbs. There must have been at least 50 yellow tail around the paddy chasing the small baits. They were very boat shy and it was hard to get them interested in the very large sardines. The paddy was at 34-58 and 122-44. The water looked real good at the donut there was some bait and possible meter marks on the cold side of the break, but no takers. We worked our way north to the 122-10 line west of the elbow never finding the break there. Nice ride home.

Ok all you fishing fanatics: We could use your help. Central Coast Salmon Enhancement, long time volunteer group in Avila, is having a harder and harder time raising the money to raise and release the approximately 140,000 salmon we release every summer. State funding and Fish and Game grants are drying up, so we have to raise more and more of the needed funds oursleves. Here are some things you can do:
1. Join CCSE as a member and help us out with projects.
2. Consider joining the Board of Directors
3. Plan to come to our annual fund raiser "A Taste of Salmon" November 5 at the Pismo Beach Vet's Hall.
4. Donate fishing related items to the auction on Nov. 5.
5. Send us some money to help cover costs.
We are here only to enhance the fishing opportunities along the Central Coast. We are fishermen and women. We could use a little help. Thanks!

I have had my ear to the radio since 5:30 this morning and have heard nothing except guys asking about albacore with no responses. Virg's has nothing on their recording yet.
The weather is still calm out there now but forecast to start blowing later this afternoon and 15-25 kts saturday. As accurate as the forecasts have been they don't mean much. If you really want to go, then the best thing to do is get early and check the buoys. If they are still down then you may have a shot. Just be ready to head in if it starts to blow/whitecap.

John:

We are planning to be at the ramp around 0530. There appears to be several boats heading out.

Yes, Virg's struck out today, but it sounds like they went pretty deep into the warm water and might not have found any breaks. Matt who runs the Billy Boy in MB said that he only baited one skiff today, so who knows. I think that our plan is to hit the break that has been up Cape San Martin way (but not all the way up!), and fish it downhill. That way if the wind does come up it's an easier run back.

Eric ;
I did a cut and paste from John Lindsey's forecast that he e-mails to us. Scroll down to his wind section and then continue down to his 24 & 48 hour outlook. John's forecast is for DCPP but could be indicative of what to expect further out.
Just looked at today's partial SST and did not see anything to be helpfull to the guys running tomorrow.

What do they do at PSL? I went there to purchase a new Yamaha OB and not only were they $1000 more that anyone else (on a $3000 kicker), they couldn't get one for several months, maybe next year. Let's petition to put the ramp back in there....

Where did you get the "10-15 Friday morning, 20-25, +30 Friday afternoon" wind forecast? The report that I got from Lindsay is calling for "gentle NW wind Friday morning, increasing NW winds will develop on Friday, Saturday."

Just curious, is this your seat-of-the-pants forecast or something that someone else is forecasting? I'll be making the tuna run tomorrow along with several others. Thanks.

I'm not even sure that PSL "leans hard" toward the needs of the salmon and rock cod fisherman. I have been out of there when the salmon were in and they have called out to tell everyone that they are closing the sling at 4PM.

Sorry to say, PSL does not recognize the unique needs of today's tuna fisherman and leans hard to the hours of PBr's seeking salmon, rockfish, and halibut. Demand vs. gain. Yes, launching from Morro Bay is almost always the only option when fish are offshore. Enough said.

Just curious but does anyone know what's with the banker's hours at PSL's Portside Marine? It was "lights out" there last Sunday till about 6:30 a.m. or so and the lift didn't move till darned near 6:45!

Makes for a pretty late start. MB's lookin' better everyday for those that still run on "Fisherman's Hours"

We're running out of PSL Friday morning. Tammy is opening at 6-6:30. Going south to look at the area below bouy SSW, probably about 20-35 mi.SST pics showed some water that looked promising. Will post results when we get back.

Below is John's report for today. We are fishing! Just not sure where yet.

SEA/SWELL:

Today's 2 to 4 foot northwesterly (290) sea/swell (with a 5-9
second period) will continue at this height and period through
through Friday morning.

Combined with this northwesterly sea/swell will be a 1 to 3 foot
southern hemisphere (215) swell (with a 14-16 second period)
through tomorrow.

Increasing northwesterly winds along the California coastline will
produce a 3 to 5 foot northwesterly (290) sea/swell (with a 5-10
second period) on Friday afternoon and night, further increasing
to 5 to 7 feet on Saturday and Sunday.

A 3 to 5 foot west-northwesterly (275) swell (with a 7-15 second
period) will develop along our coastline on Monday, decreasing to
2 to 4 feet (with a 7-13 second period) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

An intense storm near Antarctica will produce the largest southern
hemisphere swell of the season. This swell will arrive next Friday
15th of September at 1 to 3 feet from (215) true (with a 20-22+
second period), building to 3 to 5 feet (with an 18-20 second period)
next Saturday 16th and peaking next Sunday 17th at 4 to 6 feet
(with a 16-18 second period.

Well just updated at 3pm ....

FRI...NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. NW SWELL 5 TO 7 FT AT 8 SECONDS. AREAS OF FOG IN THE MORNING.

Going to be a bumpy ride with that swell period ... but looks fishable. Be prepared to turn for the barn if the wind kicks.

Back on station.
I see the current status has been posted. I suspect that John (Admiral) will check out the elbow and in around the 35:00 line on his way back. Sounds like both boats bypassed it this morning. I think the area around 35:05 and 121:25 and SW may still be holding fish. As for the weather; forget the forecasts and just head out and turn around if you don't like it.

Best looking plume is massive and lies off Arguello Cyn now, about a 70m run from Santa Barbara. Ideal situation for rigs ready to roll from the south. Best bet is to spend the night in Coho then access the grounds early.

The window opened wide at around 2am this morning, at least north of the 35:00 line. The Cape San Martin buoy is almost calm but Arguello is still smoking !! The forecast for the next 4 days is better than it was yesterday. Still tough to read for tomorrow and it is going to depend on location. The further south the worse it gets.

Also, bogus deal on the Plane crash situation! As a pilot, that just plain sucks to hear about it! Had they just made a departure off the island when they went in?

Hey guys, I was surfing the web and found the best Moon Phase site of all time! The link is : http://www.moon-phases.net/calendar/index.php
This site allows you to look at the previous years phases so that if you go on an annual fishing trip you can compare etc.
very useful... also, if sombody ever ask you "Do you know what a Waxing gibbous is" you can say "why yes I do"

The window opened a crack! Both the NWS and the UCAR computer models show the wind coming down to 10kts tomorrow and 10-15 friday. The swell forecast is also down, 7-9 ft sat. Probably doable but sloppy ! Still a marine layer over the area out there so I expect no SST tonight.
