At this point, Tuesday really looks like the call for LFT. Nice gentle wind, warm temperature..classic conditions. It certainly worked when I called it for Thursday, September 1. Lets all come together and go get those beauties. Blackie and Ventura Joe: kiss and make up, we're all in this together. Will |

Pt Sur Break: 63m semi-north of the Rock following the shoreline: Clean warm water has pushed within 8-miles of the beach there. Significant. There's warm blue water that meets cool green water there. Bait 'n fish? Fish rockfish and butts on the way there and back and find out. BTW: Those Monterey boats very rarely head this direction due to having to return home in the pm slop. Virg's went outside today near the Elbow finding blue water for no fish. Fish need feed and it may be further inshore. |

That area of the Elbow was a desert last Friday .... Water 15 miles north of there produced and the break down around the donut area looks way more fishy .... crap shoot! Will be back on it when the weather lays down. D |

Bill: It's going to be lumpy with the south swell and NW wind on top of it. I don't think that it will be any more "dangerous" than the average 6-8 foot swell, it just won't be a typical summer day. It's going to be rocky and rolly. If both your stomachs are OK in those conditions, shouldn't be a problem. I would also check with Virg's if you haven't already. They sent out a couple rockfish boats today and should have a good idea of how it was. The swell began to show this morning. Eric Endersby |

The National Weather Service has come out with some "flood" warnings on this swell, based on the astronomical high tides that we will have coupled with the swell. Yes, spots will probably break that haven't broken in years since they rarely see much swell energy from the south, so it should be interesting. But still, it won't be anything like a big macker winter swell. At any rate, folks beware out there fishing. As Bob said of '68, surf may be breaking where it is not expected. Be safe. Eric, After viewing the video on tonight's news of these waves in Hawaii it makes you wonder. I remember the waves of August 1968 at Pismo Beach. I was only 18 years old, but I remember it well. I witness a lot of breaks in areas that I have never seen surf break before. I guess it was a total surprise for everyone. A longtime surfer, Bob |

Peter: South swells in these parts are not that big of a deal from either a boating or coastal damage perspective. Surfers (like me) get all frothed-up, but in general a south swell of this magnitude is no more a threat to boating or coastal concerns any more than a 6-8 foot winter swell. The reason is is that a south swell has had to travel 10 times farther (this one is from the southern hemisphere, aka New Zealand), so it loses alot more energy than a north pacific swell. And it is coming in at such an extreme angle from the south (200 degrees magnetic in this case) that once the swell comes up from the south pacific, then up the California coast, then around Point Conception (look at a map or globe, that is alot of bending), the energy loss is substantial and the result will be head-high (surfer jargon) surf at most beaches, maybe double-overhead at the standout spots. Now, southern Cal will get hammered, as much of that coast faces south west and due south. There the swell energy will get concentrated and result in much larger surf, stronger and more dangerous rip currents, and coastal damage. I don't want to downplay it totally here, but it's nothing like a 10-foot swell at 20 seconds in the winter. With a northwest wind on top of it, it will make for some nasty going, though, so everyone shoud still be on top of it out there and be careful. With luck, it will push some more of the warm water up and in. Eric Endersby |

Went out for RC today there was only 3 or 4 boats out from MB but it seems like we all did well on large reds. I also picked up 1 keeper ling. Nice in the morning and bumpy in the afternoon. We were fishing just below Cambria. I read the same report about a large southern swell arriving in the next few days so be careful if you go. |

I can't believe that the National Weather Service is not informing people about south swell. My God, are they doing drugs? Is this were our taxpayers money goes to? Peter. =========== DCPP Weather Forecast for Tuesday 09/14/05 ============ SWELL: The southern hemisphere swell has reached 10.5 feet with a 19 second period at Southwest Hawaii Island Buoy this morning. This southern hemisphere (200°) swell will arrive along the Diablo Canyon coastline late tonight a 1 foot with a 22+ second period, building to 4 to 6 feet (with a 19-21 second period) by Thursday afternoon. This swell will further build to 6 to 8 feet (with an 18-20 second period) on Friday and peaking on Saturday morning at 7 to 8 feet (with a 17-19 second period). This swell will gradually decrease on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Note: This could be the highest southern hemisphere swell since 1968, and will produce a great amount of surge in the Intake Cove. High tides of 6 feet or higher will occur during this swell event. Some southerly facing beaches, depending on bottom bathymetry, could see extremely high sets of waves. Combined with this southern hemisphere swell will be 3 to 5 foot northwesterly (295°) sea/swell (with a 5-8 second period) on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. A 5 to 7 foot northwesterly (290°) swell (with an 11-13 second period) will arrive along our coastline on Tuesday and Wednesday. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION: Still little change is indicated in the presents conditions. Marine low clouds moved inland this morning but will burn off by late this morning/early afternoon throughout our area. Marine low clouds will redevelop early tomorrow morning, then clear by the afternoon hours. Little change in this pattern is forecast through rest of the week. Below normal temperatures will continue today as another in a series of very weak upper-level disturbances crosses our area from the west. Inland temperatures only reached the high 70's yesterday, but should warm a few degrees today to the low 80s. Below normal temperatures will continue through Saturday as the last in the series of weak impulses crossed the state. By Sunday, temperatures will begin to warm slightly as an upper-level high pressure ridge begins to dominate the region, then much warmer temperatures, especially along the coast, will occur Monday and especially Tuesday as an offshore flow develops under a moderately strong high pressure ridge. |

Rory: The computer models do not look good for monday but these forecasts change every six hours and you are talking about 5 days from now. I would wait as long as you can before comitting your friends. You could plan on rockfish as a back-up if you can't go long and by long it looks like 60 nm minimum based on the last SST. |

Here's part of the Diablo forcast from today. Sounds like the southern swell might get real big this week. Worst butt kicking I have taken out there has been in mixed seas with some fresh wind to blow the tops over. This southern hemisphere (200°) swell will arrive along the Diablo Canyon coastline on Thursday at 2 to 4 feet (with a 20-22+ second period), building to 5 to 7 feet (with an 18-20 second period) on Friday and peaking Saturday morning at 7 to 8 feet (with an 17-19 second period). This swell will gradually decrease on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. |

Here you go Dave .. its not exactly the same as UGO's famous .. but its close. First go over to Stuarts and grab a loin. Sear for 1 min each side ... place in plastic wrap and in fridge to cool. Once cooled take that sharp knife (one like Stuart has that sent me to the ER) slice into Tataki sized pieces. Sauce: 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup *mirin (sweet rice wine) (soy sauce : mirin = 1:1) 2 tbsp sugar ( I like less sugar) 2 tbsp Olive Oil Fresh Garlic Green Onion Drizle with that and Spicy Tuna sacuce and its On Like Donkey Kong! I dont trust that inside stuff at the moment .... There was a ton of life at 30 miles but water was green and cold. Last nights SST was at 6pm ... could be slightly corrupted because of surface warming during the afternoon. Although, always worth stopping on before running outside. Hate to think we ran over fish to find fish ... sure its happend in the past. D |

Hard break outside the donut looks very good with the some very blue water right on the break. Water back up on the 122.02 line also looks to be holding. Interesting observation by Mark on the Ms Macky was the same water that was 62 degrees on friday had cooled to 58.5 on Saturday ...water moving around a lot out there .. also Marlin sighting on the same .02 line Saturday combined with Yellowtail on paddy's and Mako's ... soon will be Darado. Could be a fun October |

The search and rescue in Avila was a false alarm, from a uninformed person in Pismo (onshore)? The US Coast Guard and local law enforcement air support searched for a overturned Catimaran. After an exhusted search offshore we looked in the parking lot and noted that there was no empty trailer, thus there could not be a small catimaran out and over due. The Sheriff and US Coast Guard had not recieved any reprots of missing vessels/persons, so they called it off. A bad observation by a landlubber who thought he saw something? A good drill for the guys. Better safe than sorry. Wear your lifejackets and make sure you have a good working VHF. |

Mike: Location, Location, Location and the Santa Maria buoy is blowing 18kts with waves at 5ft-6sec. Which brings me to point of information. If you really want to know what the conditions are like out there; you bring up the listing on the buoy report and look at the wave height and APD not DPD. DPD is the dominant period and APD is average period. Usually the average period is much shorter than the dominant period and when they are close to equal ie; 5ft at 6sec it won't be very nice. |

I cleaned my tuna at home, then went back to the ramp in the afternoon the next day to dump the carcasses in the fish dumpster. One guy hanging out there asked where I got them, and I said "surf casting," then drove off. hahaha maybe that's where the rumor started!!! Eric Endersby |

The rumor mill says 14 albies were picked up 14-16 miles from the rock on Saturday. Can anyone confirm this? |

Thanks for the info Harrell. I will be going after rockcod tomorrow and wait for better wx to take a crack at the albies. Hopefully they won't fly the coop before the next good wx break. Wish we still had PSL Bouy |

Weather/SST: Doesn't look like there are any really good days in the forecasts this week. Sloppy but fishable ?? That plume at 14/35 is still holding and is the only close water that looks promising and the cholorophyll shot shows it to be pretty clean. The hard breaks are out 65-70 nm miles. Long run in sloppy weather. Terry; I have not heard of any fish being caught in that water to the south. Virg's had two boats south as far as the 1908 the day before Mark checked it out, also for nothing. |

For chrissakes, Elder, you've done it again! That wasn't Moby Doo-doo you found. Best guess is that Puglesi forgot to spin the Y-valve on his marine head. Cheers from New Zealand. |

I went down to the plume of water near Santa Lucia Bank on Friday. Big area to cover with only one boat. Really looked good but couldn't find the fish. I talked with Deke on the Mello Boy (bait boat). Because they don't open til LATE, if you want to put your boat on a mooring, he'll take you to your boat at 4 am when he comes in so you can get bait and run. It's a lot shorter run to the south than out of Morro. |

SST/Weather The wind on the buoys is coming down now and tomorrow looks very fishable on the UCAR computer models. Not flat calm but OK. This mornings wide open SST shot shows a very promising plume at 35:14/ 121:35 about 36 nm out of Morro Bay. This is probably the same plume that has been holding the fish. The warmer hard breaks are 65-70 nm west or south west. Sofar nothing has been found in the break to the SW. Remember; Don't count on jig strikes, soak bait on anything that looks promising such as birds, bait and especially meter marks. |

So I talked to Marine Biologist Carroll at Tennera today and asked if he wanted the whale shit to study in the lab. He said no, everyone knows whats in it and it smells. I asked him what I should do with it? He said toss it! So much for that, the wife is pissed and is threatening to throw everything in the refer out? I also checked and it is not ambergis. Ah, Shit. |

Just a note: we caught 20 bait fish last week: Bait was lively sardines about 7-8". We used 2/0 circle tuna hooks both nose hooked and tail hooked(tail hooking makes the bait swim away from the boat). Line was 25# Maxima Ultragreen and all fish took fly lined bait. We let the bait get a ways out and then just set the reels on click and waited for the alarm to go off. About 5 seconds of free spool and then engage and you are on! We constantly threw both dead and live chum to keep the school boiling. Biggest problem was multiple hookups with wrapped lines. I'm sure we will get them again. Will |

Dustin, thanks for the information. I guess we are doing things right, it just seems crazy that we can't get ANY bait fish to go. We had 3 jig fish yesterday and stopped immediately, began pretty heavy chum (4-8 chovies to start and 3-5 every couple minutes after that), sank bait, fly lined bait & dropped fish traps. We tried hook'n through the nose, hook'n through the belly and always kept on fresh bait. We use 25lb floro leaders and matched the dinky chovies to small ringed hooks. We also did this where we saw jumpers. No bites and we never saw a fish take any of the almost continuous chum. We have a new through hull so we ought to pick up the marks out there now. We still have to get it all dialed in. Sure missed the camaraderie up in Monterey! |

Just got your message Mike. Sorry probably wont be fishing this next week due to my finger being full of stitches from my stupid human trick on Stuarts filet board. Think David is coming up as well Thursday .... if I cant fish maybe you guys can team up. The fish are there, but moved 20+ miles north in a week .... big ocean and coverage is everything up here. Looking to field crew for a couple days on the water mid part of next week. This has been a strange year so no telling how long this tuna window will remain open. We burned 160-gallons of diesel looking for exotics down south (both above and below Catalina) since Morro was shut down on Monday due to weather. Working south, we did not see one single fish under hundreds of paddies, had no jig strikes, and spotted zero marlin looking through the glasses for 3-days. Beautiful water that is dead of life. Morro is one of the few bright spots on the coast right now so get it while you can. |
