It was probably striped marlin, we saw them jumping six feet in air on the way back to the barn, at the party with all the other sea life. Harrel was right, they were probably on the warm side of that cold break in the 54-58.5 range at 29+ mi area. Anyways we didn't see any of you others at the filling station for martinis. Not much left after the $250 diesel bill either. The full moon is definatly a big minus too. I just hope some more spirit to give it the old school try. We don't have much time left, let's go unconventional-

Just another 'no fish' report from yesterday. 167 miles on the water and everything but LFT. Something hit a meat line so hard it ripped open a 200# snap and got away with a cedar plug but I never saw what it was. Those huge bait balls were amazing.

'til next time...

FYI, to all the guys and gals that can't get to the tuna:-( The PFMC (Pacific Fisheries Management Council) formally convened today, and voted to maintain California 2005 sport groundfish regulations and limits. This means rockfish closes in 9 days

My trip to Half Moon Bay was cancelled today, so I'm staying around Morro Bay one more day. Talked to some of you at the loading dock - sorry for all the burned fuel, but better luck tomorrow! I'll be looking for smiling tuna hunters coming back tomorrow ready to donate their stomachs to science!

Also, about 26 miles out, there were the hugest bait balls I have ever seen. The whales were going ballistic, along with the terns, shearwaters, gulls, porpoises, and sea lions. It was amazing. Bait rippling the surface as far as you could see. Too bad the water was brown/green and 56.5 degrees. Truly amazing!

First hand report: It was drop dead beautiful out there today. We burned up 105 gallons of fuel and covered the large plume 50 miles out on a 250 heading. Water temp got up to a high of 64.5 degrees. Only one slight problem; there were only scarce LFTs around and they were not hungry at all. We tried it all; jigs, Rapalas, deep soaking baits, even some exotic Hawaiian lures...but no go today. Should have been great, could have happened, but the guests of honor did not show up.
Oh well, had a great time and enjoyed sharing the hunt with all you guys out there. Next time...

Eric Endersby of the ill-fated Catalina trip here. My boat partner and I are heading out tomorrow around 0530-0600. Stopping at Virg's for bait then heading more or less straight out to that north-south temp break. Will probably hedge north on the way out and work our way down the break. Wasn't planning on heading to the CSM buoy but who knows.

Maybe let's partner out? We're on a 22' Grady named, depending on who you talk to, the "24-7" or the "Chum Bucket." Either way we'll be on 68. My cell is 471-8314, let's try and hook up in the a.m.

Terrafin just posted last night's (11:08 pm) wide open SST. There is a 30 mile north south break starting just above Will's numbers. The cold side of the break starts at 121:50 and these late season fish are often on the cold side. Might be worth a look.
The weather is looking good tomorrow and wednesday but Lindsey (PG&E) says it might start blowing again thursday.

Per last night's SST and updated Chloro shots: Unchecked 59 to 61-degree blue water against green nutrient water located at 35.55 and 122.00 line, aprox 12m above the Cp San Martin Buoy. Looks to be about a 60 to 65m-mile run from MB. Areas above the Elbow, out near Donut, and 1908 were recently covered for No results. That water above SM Buoy originates from the same body bringing 25 to 45-lb fish for the privates out of Monterey and Cruz but nobody knows for sure if the southern end of this plume is holding.

Monterrey bait basically sucks. Matt on the Billy Boy has us spoiled. Why do you think the Monterey Bay Aquarium gets their sardine anchovies and mackeral from Matt?
Actually the guys that make bait for Monterey are great, but they do bait for the whole bay including SC and Moss. So they are spread thin when Tuna are near, plus they don't have much technique when it comes to keeping bait fresh in a receiver or on the boat. MB is an alright spot to assault sur canyon, because the run home is NICE

OK, here's the deal. We (Woody and I ) are going out Tuesday to the nearest break out of Morro Bay, which is currently about 48 nm due west to find some LFT. Nobody currently knows if this break holds any fish but it looks good. It is a crap shoot, but we're on it anyway. Any current information on this plan would be greatlt appreciated, and of course, we will report results to you all. Anyone else in for Tuesday?

Thanks guys for the info on Moss. I don't mind paying for the RV park, but I think I'll run up there and do some pre-run looking. Maybe a trip in mid week would be smarter. With school in, maybe the park will have a spot. I really don't want to block any local fisherman, that happens too much at MB. An ex-commercial fisherman told me to by-pass Moss and shoot for Half Moon Bay. What do you think?
What about that water today? Dead calm here.

They had (or have) a rule at Moss; that if the RV park/campground is not full then you cannot overnight in the parking lot but if it is full then it is ok. The RV park is complete with all the conveniences but not cheap.

Sissy. Haven`t stayed myself but I have seen motor homes in there for several days when I have been there. There is a machine that takes money or credit cards by the restroom. Be sure to pay for each day as they do check. Tape the ticket to your windshield inside. Take some change there is a washdown. Hope that helps. Mike

The weather is still looking good for tues, wed and thurs but fri-sat is showing wind on the computer models.
Will, That plume 50nm west along the 10/20 line and out at the 50/00 lon line looks like the only game in town. Three or four years ago you could bet that it would be holding fish but this year ?? the only way to know is to check it.
Mike Green and those fishing the close in water; there is a surfing site that gives you a good idea of the inside water at Morro Bay. It is primarily a membership site but the home page has a good weather summary for Morro. I will look up the address and post it after I post this.

Lost my main crewman from Ventura for a planned 3-day assault. He's pinned down with a limited time frame so had to change plans. We'll likley make the most of our Ltd 1.5-days and jump on his rig out of Dana and head to the Cortez Bank in hopes of finding a stray carp, yft, bft, or yt. It's far from a slam dunk so I will be back north lookin for longfins real soon no doubt. Great weather on-tap for Central CAL from Tuesday to Saturday of next week so get some.

Moorefish. It is easier to put in at Moss. If you go to Monterey you have to drive into town. Lots more parking at Moss. If you leave at the time when the work day is done lots more traffic at Monterey. Monterey is easier to get out side so you be the judge. Mike

Looks like a very hard break 48 miles due west of Morro Bay. What do you think about LFT possibilities there?

Mike:
It is a little less than three hours to Moss landing from the Morro exit on 101. The Lethal Weapon has bait by Moss fuel dock. 1-408 968 1626 From Moss to the last numbers for fish is about 50 nm.

SISSY- Not sure which route is better. Never launched out of Monterey. I think it's important to look at all the variables. #1- Does Monterey have a reliable live bait source during weekdays? How much of a drive is it to reach Monterey beyond the Morro turn-off at the 101? Is the 101 the best route to take coming from Ventura? Just weighing our options. Thanks. Btw: Water tied to that plume begins aprox 70m from the Rock.

Hey Blackie, I heard somewhere that since the principle diet of Sheepshead are mollusks, that if you steam the meat over boiling crab, lobster, etc., it takes on more of the flavor. Then you can use it for an entree or bust it into flakes and use it on a salad, instead of crab. Try going online to: therecipeexchange.com or cd.kitchen.com, or some other online recipe website. Hope this helps. Pura Vida, Paul Boe

Does anyone know anything about the rumor I heard about the F&G extending the RC season?
I thought Mel was working on that.

Blackie: I have caught a couple of big sheepshead right there at Leffingwell. They were very good to eat. I don't remember how we prepped them. They were males, bright red and black. Maybe we just ate the plank.

Mike Moore: Would a trailer ride up the coast be better to get to Sur? Or were you wanting to get at some RC on the way? That's a long and risky trip up there by sea. I was thinking of taking the trailer to Monterey after launching at MB to avoid the long haul home. It's a hassle, but nice not to have to turn around.

Anyone interested in teaming up and running to that break off Sur Cyn next week? It's were the warm blue water meets green, possibly full of life. The downside is it's a bit of a haul (aprox 85-miles) but this body of water is producing big fish for the Monterey boats and is tied to some impressive looking water per last night's SST and Chloro shots. The run up the line generally follows the coast so it should be a decent run up. Weather for Tuesday into Thursday looks right for this kind of trip, generally light winds 5 to 15-kts. I can fish Tue, Wed, and Thur. It's getting late so no time to wait.

Fellow fisherman;
I know there are some EXPERTS out there that have a good way to prepare SHEEPSHEAD , I was given a 14# yesterday on the LOT OF FUN, what do you do with it besides cook it on a plank and throw the fish and eat the plank.

Wow ! Accurate two days in a row for the NWS. The conditons out there this morning are really bad and Mike tomorrow is forecast to be the same. I wouldn't want to be out there in any boat especially a small one. Tuesday thru the rest of the week are still looking good on the computer models so both albacore and end of the season rockfish should be good to go.

Wide open SST for us and Monterey. The closest break is around the elbow but didn't yield any fish for the Admiral the other day. The area around the Dogbone and Sur canyon were holding fish a couple of days ago. The Wild Wave out of Santa Cruz caught 19 big fish and the private boats did ok also. This area is probably too far for most of us so unless Virg's finds some closer fish a trip to Monterey is probably the best bet.

basically, the surf is Way bigger at leffingwell. than morro bay harbor mouth... i surf and i checked both spots today... leffingwell is a nogo on the south. it takes a direct hit. look at the chart. wouldn't want you to drive up there and not be able to launch. good luck, chris

I think it would benifit you Mike to check out Luffingwell launching. Depending on how small a boat you do have. I launch my 12' there at times where I wouldn't be caught dead trying to get out of Morro harbor. The south-facing shoreline's are getting hit the hardest. Just be safe & have safety gear with you. PFD's, GPS, Radio, Flare gun, Etc. Etc.

I have one of the new Digial cell phone boosters that I pulled off my Davis. Did not work well for me on the boat but they do work well from what I heard. Anybody interested email me. Sell it for $175 or make me an offer. It will work in your car or house also.

At least the forecast for today was accurate which is probably a first this season. No Mike, I don't know of anyone out today I think the "big south swell" may have had an influence. I think Virg's is sending a boat out tonight and tomorrow night. Hope they find the fish !

New subject;
I found a reasonably priced cell phone booster. My home area has very marginal reception and when I hooked it up I went from 1 bar to 4 bars. This unit should extend my range out chasing tuna as well. It has 3 watts output power and 15 db gain both uplink and downlink. The cost was $250. So far I am impressed with it and will let you know how it performs out on the ocean.

Right Will, tuesday is looking good and it gets better thru the week as indicated on the UCAR computer models.
The SST's are not showing any close promising water and all the fish that are being caught lately are in the area around the Dog Bone (off Pt. Sur)

Oh yea, one more thing Joe, I am one of those Morro Bay hicks. If you would scroll back through all the posts since we caught the first albacore here you will find that I posted every location of every fish caught before, during and after they were caught this season !! I was out there the same time as Stuart's first trip and we caught a half dozen and let the other boats know where each one was caught. So if you are being humorous let us know if you are serious --get a life !!
