STELLWAGEN BANK-Cod fishing & BOSTON HBR.- Stripers 9/6/03 Fall fishing both in the inshore waters and offshore bank has greatly improved on the Massachusetts coast in the Boston area. Both bait concentrations and fish activity are up as the water temps fall. Offshore on Stellwagen and beyond, cod fishing, or I should say haddock fishing, is approaching what Capt. Al said is “Spring all over again.” The big boost to this fall’s fishing is the change in the regulations which decreased the size limit of haddock from 23” to 21” and the removal of haddock from the 10 fish aggregate bag limit. Presently there is a 10 cod bag limit of 23” per person on the vessel. Other ground fish species have no limit in numbers. Haddock numbers have increased faster than cod and as a result the Feds have given recreational anglers a break. Recent trips have produced as many haddock as cod. Josh Cutler’s group from Duxbury, MA fished east of the bank in late-August trolling for giant bluefin tuna on the JANET B. This combo-trip for tuna and cod, although unsuccessful for giants, was a banner trip for cod to 20 pounds and haddock in the deep-water east of the bank. Skimmer clams have been the best producer for haddock. Further, following the bait concentrations have been school bluefin both on and east of the bank the past two weeks. The school tuna inshore have not materialized. Inshore fly and light-tackle fishing in the inner-harbor bays in and around Boston has been much better. Again bait and dropping water temps has peaked the activity. Roger Thuot of Petersham, MA and his daughter and Roger Hoover of Tyronne, PA had their best trip of the season casting chartreuse Half & Half’s on DepthCharge line and white gurglers on Wonderline to bass busting on silversides. 20- 27 inch bass came over the side, with one keeper of 32 inches, in the feeding blitz which lasted almost two-hours. On Wednesday, Chuck Martin and friends from Deluth, GA were met at Rowe’s Wharf for their two-boat fly and light-tackle trip. Once again Boston’s inner-harbor bays were the ticket. Before avid fly caster Chuck Martin was done, he had tallied four keepers on the long rod and his personal best bass of 36 inches. Capt. Mike Bartlett B-Fast Charters www.bfastcharters.com

Another Season Begins...
Sunday, May 18, 2003: After a rather cold and unsettled spring, I left the house today with the temperature reading about 33 degrees and the hopes of catching my first bass of the season. This was a scouting trip and I was accompanied by avid hunter and fisherwoman Pam Ingham. We left the slip about 5:30 am and zipped across Hingham Bay to a favorite and usually productive spot. The surface water temp. in the Bay was @ 51 degress and the water temp. around the Outer Harbor Islands was @ 48-49 degrees. With an hour or two left of a dropping tide, I had hoped we would find some action. I noticed a small cluster of terns and decidied to investigate. To my delight, Pam hooked up first using a 3/8 oz. jig tipped with a small rainbow trout colored fin s fish. I took out my eight weight and tied on a small chartreuse/white clouser with gold flash. Then I was tight to a healthy though not huge fresh striper. Next fish was Pam's first keeper of the season measuring just over 28" in length. Once we lost the tide the bass were nowhere to be found. All in all, a good start to the season after a long cold winter and spring. BTW, bass were reportedly caught on the airport flats about the same time of the morning tide. Out front, there was decent cod fishing and schools of macks were feeding on very small bait (maybe shrimp) on the surface.
Monday, May 19, 2003: Very encouraging report from Capt. Tom Koerber who was fortunate enough to have the day off to fish. Tom found stripers feeding on small bait on the outgoing tide near the Inner Harbor channel. The fish were up for 3 hours right through the slack tide! BTW, a number of anglers got into some nice action late morning and early afternoon yesterday near the North Channel. The bass were busting on schools of macks but were somewhat picky as they wanted the real thing.
Sunday, May 25, 2003: Very tough conditions today for Brian Warden of Colorado and his father, Tom. With 15-20 knot east winds and rough seas outside the harbor, we were relegated to fishing inside with not many options. We missed a short lived bite in Dorchester Bay @ the top of the high tide but did get a few at the Deer I. rip. Tom caught his largest fish on the fly which weighed @ 10# and gave him a great fight on an 8 wt.
Monday, Memorial Day, May 26, 2003: Didn't fish Boston this morning but wish I had. Reportedly nice schoolie action on the south side of Thompson I on the incoming tide with flat calm conditions and no rain (until mid- morning). What a difference a day makes!
Until next week, we'll see you out there...

Wednesday, July 17, 2002: Although the fishing continued on the slow side, that didn't bother Mike Hogan and sister, Debbie, who enjoyed her first fly fishing excursion for striped bass. There were no working birds, no breaking fish, and no bait to be seen throughout the Harbor. However, we "picked" at them and managed a handful of fish (mostly small blues and a couple bass). Of course, Debbie out fished her brother Michael but that was to be expected! Beginner's luck?
Thursday, July 18, 2002: The morning started with great promise...all kinds of bait in Dorchester Bay, working birds and some breaking fish in Hingham Bay then in Dorchester. However, the action was short-lived and we only managed to catch and release a few small bass today on fly and light tackle. But for Stephen Saylor and his son, Ethan, the day was a success. Stephen caught his first striper on the fly and Ethan caught his first striper ever! Ethan said, "I didn't think I was going to catch any fish and I caught three!" Sometimes, it's not how many you catch but how well you catch them. For this father and son, the experience was not measured in numbers of bass caught and released.
Friday, July 19, 2002: The weather was definitely a factor today as thunderstorms interfered with the fishing and chased us off the water by 8:30 am. Van Lathem and his father-in-law only managed a few bass before the trip was cut short due to severe weather. However, the first fish of the day was a nice 30" bass caught by Herman on a jig and 5" bass assassin. Great start to a rather soggy ending! So it goes...
Saturday, July 20, 2002: For Joe Tango and his college friend, Dennis, fishing was very slow. Although we marked much bait in the Harbor, the bass seemed to be few and far between. Joe, a newcomer to saltwater fly fishing, had plenty of casting practice and did get his first striper on the fly. The wind started from the north and shifted northeast by mid-morning making it a somewhat cool and choppy day on the water.
Joe's first fly rod striper!
Sunday, July 21, 2002: After telling my clients that the fishing had been very slow all week, Jay Ketterer remarked, "Don't worry, I bring good luck!" Well, he sure did today because the fishing was outstanding. At first light we found a school of large bass feeding on big herring in Hingham Bay and Chris Ketterer landed a nice 15 lb. linesider on a jig and 5" Albino Shad Bass Assassin. Later, Jay lost a big fish but all three anglers, father Jack included, hooked up. The anchorage lit up as well a short while later with lots of nice schoolie bass feeding on small 5" herring. When the action slowed down in the anchorage, the bass came up again on the other side of the Bay. There was also action out front with schools of bluefish and some bass, including a 29" "keeper" that Jay ended the day with. We only caught one bluefish as the schools were moving rapidly and the boat traffic made it somewhat of a challenge to maneuver around.
Until next week, we'll see you out there...

Monday, July 1, 2002: Mike Vanherff of Ottowa, Canada, took advantage of a family visit in Quincy to fly rod up his first striped bass. The weather was great and the fish were numerous and user friendly, albeit small in size. The action lasted from first light until 8:30 or so. We then netted some live herring to use as live bait chum. It was a bit difficult to net a sufficient amount of bait as the schools were moving quite fast.
Tuesday, July 2, 2002: I very much enjoyed taking Ted Purcell and 5 year old son Tanner out for Tanner's very first striped bass trip. Ted used the fly rod and Tanner caught his first striper on a 1/2 jig tipped with an alewive color fin s fish. The bass were again feeding on young herring in the Dorchester Bay area. The fish were plentiful but again relatively small in size. We later found a school of somewhat finicky but very large bass mixed in with smaller bluefish. Although Ted managed to hook a few small fish on a small popper and half & half, none of the big boys would take his offering. Lots of follows...Tanner hooked into a small blue that made a couple of leaps before brought tnear boatside for a long line release. I was throwing a 5" Bass Assassin to see if I could hook up with a nice bass for Tanner. The fish I did catch and release was much too large for a 5 year old to handle!
July 4, 2002: The fishing has continued good with many fish on top in the early morning hours until either the boats, sun or tide puts them down. We're seeing some larger schoolies and really big fish fresh in from the ocean with sea lice chowing down on the herring which have been plentiful. Today, the fishing was as hot as the weather on this fine Fourth of July! Van Letham and brother in law, Don, had an outstanding day of striper fishing using fly and light tackle. The gray/lavender half & half outfished the chartreuse one, but the big fish fell to a 4" pearl shad body fished on 1/2 oz jig head by Don. As long as the weather continues to be stable and the bait remains in the Harbor, the fishing for both bass and blues should remain very good.
Friday, July 5, 2002: Shift in the wind to the NW following a high pressure system that moved in over night made the fishing difficult especially mid-morning when the wind picked up. There were still lots of bass and birds working bait in the anchorage but the fish moved around very fast and the wind and wave action made it hard to stay on them. The Jim Vogt charter caught a number of schoolies up to 24" and small blues but it was a bit tough going.
Until next week, we'll see you out there...

Friday, June 28, 2002: The fishing continued on the slow side for Chris Davidson and party from Deutch Bank in Boston. We fished some spots in Quincy Bay for small blues and stripers which were fun on fly and light tackle. There was no top water action in the Harbor.
Saturday, June 29, 2002: Enjoyed taking Rick and Liz Newman out for a day of light tackle fishing. Again, we found small blues and bass in Quincy Bay. Later in the morning, Liz caught and released a 32" 12 lb. beauty at a different location near the airport. The day was gorgeous, both Rick and Liz caught a handful of fish and had the opportunity to see a number of bass in relatively skinny water. What a relaxing way to spend the day!
Sunday, June 29, 2002: Another great day on the water for Grant Brown and girlfriend Carrie Lascell. Just shortly after first light, a couple large schools of small stripers were chasing herring near Governor's I. flats and in Dorchester Bay. For a while, it was "fish on" every cast for Grant, a first timer to saltwater fly fishing. Around 9:00 am, the action came to an abrupt end. We then netted some live bait (small herring) which we later used to "chum up" some stripers I marked in Quincy Bay. When live bait chumming, there are at least two rules to follow: 1. You can never have enough live bait. 2. Only chum when you mark fish.

Saturday, June 15, 2002: Due to poor weather, Bill Faubian of Cohasset and his friends from South Dakato were unable to fish the harbor. However, they did manage to get out on Friday and the boys from So. Dakota caught their very first stripers early in the Fore River area. Later in the morning, they took fish off structure at mid-incoming tide in Quincy Bay. The fish showed big time about an hour or so before top of the tide at Jacknife Ledge and between Sheep and Bumpkin I. And yes, all agreed that stripers do pull harder than walleys!
Tuesday, June 18, 2002: Brian Farrel enjoyed a beautiful day on the water fly fishing for stripers as a birthday gift from his, no doubt, lovely wife. We found a school of bass out front at first light and managed a handful of schoolies before they disappeared. A bit later in the tide, we located a school working bait at Governor's I. Flats. We picked up a couple more fish in the Inner Harbor Channel at the bottom of the tide where the bass were popping up chasing the blue-backed herring. .
Wednesday, June 19, 2002: What a difference a day makes! Kevin Cheevers fly rodded a bunch of schoolies in the 24 - 27" range and small keepers up to 35 1/2". It was just an outstanding day on the water! From first light on, we were into acres of bass feeding on blue-backed herring and large silversides. These fish were aggressive and would take chartruese or gray/lavender half & half's on fast sink lines and poppers and gurglers on floating lines. Kevin was gracious enough to invite me to fish along with him. So, I had a ball breaking in my new Orvis T3 and even landed a nice 14 pounder that fell for a white gurgler!

Tuesday, June 11, 2002: The fishing over the weekend was on the slow side, to say the least! Rob and Martha Schwartz joined me for their first fly fishing excursion in Boston Harbor on a very chilly but beautiful Saturday morning. Both Rob and Martha caught their first fly rod stripers but only a few fish were taken. Still, a slow day of fishing with your significant other beats a good day at the office or mowing the lawn, etc...
Sunday's fishing wasn't much better with morning rain and 15-20 mph SW winds. However, Bill Barnett of St. Louis was a great sport and enjoyed his time on the water as much as I enjoyed his company. Bill took a beautiful 32" 12lb. linesider loaded with sea lice in Quincy Bay on a gray/lavender half & half.
By the way, the guides and their sports who were fortunate enough to fish Monday morning were into a large school of keeper bass out front. The fish were hungrily feeding on big bluebacks.
Until next week, we'll see you out there...

Wind and More Wind... Had to cancel my charters on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning due to strong SW winds and subsequent poor fishing in the Harbor.
As good as it gets! On Sunday, June 2, 2002, I had the pleasure of taking Oscar Joost, his wife Pat and friends Lewis and Jodi for a great morning of light tackle stripers fishing. What a difference a day makes! We had all kinds of weather to contend with but the NW winds, although busy at first light, relaxed until late morning. The good news is that the bass came up at first light in the anchorage and proceeded to show big time about one hour after high tide. As the tide receeded, the stripers continued to pursue herring throughout the morning way up into the Inner Harbor. The Joost party lost track of the numbers of strong pulling bass landed and released including a brace of small keepers (kept for the grill). Baby Shad Assassins (Albino Shad color), small pearl and smoke color saltwater tubes, and larger fin s fish on 3/8 and 1/2 oz jig heads were deadly.

Saturday, May 25, 2002: Canceled the trip today due to post cold front conditions and strong NW winds. Boy, am I glad did! From what I heard, the guys using live herring did very well while those fly and light tackle enthusiasts were getting the stuffing knocked out of them.
Sunday, May 26, 2002: Speaking of herring, Kevin Cheevers ( a live herring aficionado) brought along a bunch of live herring for yours truly to try on Sunday's charter. Kevin preferred to use the long wand. We found the fish at first light in the main Harbor channel and Kevin took a number of nice schoolies before we lost the tide. Throw a live bait out with bass in the area and you were hooked up within minutes. However, both kevin and I agreed that there is nothing like catching a fiesty striper on the fly. Medium to large herring pattern deceivers or half &half's were the ticket. Although there was some activity on the coming tide in the Fore River, it didn't amount to much. At the top of the tide, the fish came up chasing the blue backs in the anchorage.
Kevin Cheevers with a nice fat Boston Harbor schoolie.
Memorial Day, May 27, 2002: Today was a perfect day on the water...With warmer temperatures, no wind, and lots of willing linesiders, you just couldn't go wrong. Again, the fish were up BIG TIME off the Castle from first light into the coming tide. My charter, Enuch Huang, wife Grace, brother Chris and Chris' wife Stephanie enjoyed catching schoolies on light tackle all morning long. The smaller pearl bass assassin's, white shad bodies, and white sparkle saltwater tubes (gitzits) worked especially well later in the morning when the fish were on silversides and somewhat finicky. Although the early morning fish were on the small side, we did get into some nicer bass later on in Quincy Bay. The fish came up again in the anchorage an hour or two before high tide. However, the school was not particularly large and the bass were doing their yo yo thing chasing the herring to the surface.

Sunday, May 19, 2002: I had the pleasure of taking out Dana Ono and his friend Wayne Marasco today on what would be one of the coldest May mornings I can remember! The fish cooperated at first light and for a few hours into the going tide. The bass were mainly on the small side up to about 24" on the fly. A gray/lavendar half and half worked well when fished deep. The wind picked up around 9:00 am and it was slim pickin's afterwards. The bulk of the activity occured in the main channel off Castle I. At one point there must have been @ 35 small craft in the general vacinity, but all anglers and captains were respectful of one another's space.
Monday, May 20, 2002: The weather has been unstable and the wind today shifted to the southeast making for tough late afternoon fishing. Andrew Cornell of PA and friend Evelyn from Falmouth, England enjoyed an afternoon of fly fishing the Harbor. We got out a few hours prior to high tide but nothing much was happening in Boston. A quick run to Hingham Bay found terns working small baitfish (silversides) in the Fore River area. Evelyn caught his first striped bass and both anglers managed to land a couple schoolies before the tide slacked. We heeaded back to Boston but again the fishing was very slow. At dusk, the terns in Boston got their act together and marked a school of bass on small bait at Governor's Island flats. Both Andrew and Evelyn agreed they had a "splended" afternoon on the water. As a guide, I work hard to put my sports onto fish and always feel somewhat badly when the fishing is slow. However, one of the best days I ever had on the water occurred this past winter in Florida on another guides boat. Even though I only caught one very small jack, the time I spent with my brother and nephew was priceless. This weekend promises warner temps. and a great incoming tide so the fishing ought to improve significantly. It's a minus tide, so boaters beware...

Subject: Boston Harbor Report, 5/12/02
Tuesday, May 7, 2002: Although I didn't get a chance to fish today, my friend Capt. Tom did. He reported that there were many bass caught and released up to 29 inches on both sides of the tide. So, there are lots of bass in the Harbor and the fishing should only get better throughout the month of May and into June!
Saturday, May 11, 2002: Found the bass, loads of them, at first light in the channel near Jackknife Ledge and the Fore River. These fish were user friendly and would take large gray/lavender/white half & half's or small olive/white clouser baitfish imitations. The fishing was solid until the wind picked up from the NW. As the wind increased on the incoming tide, the fishing became spotty throughout the harbor. The schools were moving fast in Hingham Bay which made it hard to stay on top of the fish. The forecast is for winds diminishing tonight and rain coming in for tomorrow. The fishing could be great before the rain...
Sunday, May 11, 2002: The fishing in the Harbor on this Mother's Day was outstanding! From first light well into the coming tide we were into fish non-stop for hours. There were literally acres of schoolies throughout the Harbor with some larger fish 30+ " range mixed in. Even the schoolies in the 22 - 25" variety were tough customers on 8 and 9 wt fly rods. The bass were feeding aggressively on small herring and silversides and definitely "user friendly". Either small or large flies in olive/yellow/white, olive/white, or gray/lavender/white worked equally well. In addition to using half & half's and clousers on fast sinking lines, we had fish on topwater poppers and gurglers using floating lines. Rumor has it that there were some big schools of large bass around the Outer Brewsters. However, I never made it out of Quincy Bay (between Rainsford and Peddocks) to check it out.

Bass Are Back In Boston!
Saturday, May 3, 2002: Although it was a very windy morning, there were lots of bass on herring with the going tide. Small chartruese and white clousers were effective. Mainly, the fish were on top for a couple of hours in the main channel off Castle I. and along Governor's Island Flats.
Sunday, May 4, 2002: The bass showed at first light from along Weymouth Gut Hill and into the Fore River. They were also up big time in the anchorage. Unlike Saturday, after the tide slcked, the fishing was spotty and mostly died on the outgoing tide. The fish are fresh from the ocean complete with sea lice chasing the blue back herring.
