A few pictures from our Mackerel trip. There was one Striper caught, 20-25#s, which I said had to be put back. The mate said it had to go back so take pictures. We were beyond the three mile limit for Stripers. More to come, can only put two at a time.

We finally did our yearly Mackerel trip today, we were to go on the Brooklyn, but do to certain circumstances we went on the Golden Eagle out of Belmar, NJ. It was Mackerel all day long, with a few Herring mixed in. Nothing big, small (tinker) to medium sized fish but all you can keep. We kept our usual, 15 each and gave the rest to the boat. We told the mates to let us know when they had enough of fish so we can start throwing them back. In total between the three of us we caught over 500 fish. I've been on the Eagle before and it is a great and friendly boat. |

Went out yesterday with Fred, Michael and little ole me. We tried the Old Orchard Lighthouse, nothing, went to the 10 can in the Reach Channel, nothing, then we drifted and nothing. I had one real small runoff, and a small fish on a gold diamond jig, lost it. That's it for me, until we hit the party boats for the Stripers, at the end of the month or next month. |

Another weekend shot thanks to this real nice weather we are having. Just a couple of more weeks and that's it, hoping it stays sunny and windless on the weekends from now on. This has not been a good fall Bass run for us, now Jamaica Bay is another story. |

We got our fresh Bunker at Bernies in Sheepshead Bay, they have plenty of Bunker and Green Crabs. My friend Mike was there when they delivered 600, we took 20 and they went faster than fast. All the Bunker seems to be in the back of Jamaica Bay and there aren't too many guy's going there. The only one I know of who will go there is Steve and from what I see he hasn't been going either. We went out yesterday, for a few hours, stayed by the Conference House, two Blues around four pounds. Next weekend will try and hit West Bank for the Stripers, weather and wind helping out. |

nice catching g. those big blues and blacks are a great wind down to the season. couldn't get bunker in the bait shops? boy those guys are having a rough year. license with possible fees, lack of bunker and crabs, rising prices, hurricanes and storms plus all the run off that follows seem to be happening one after another to the bait shop owners. |

Today was the day for the Striped Bass, well that's what we thought and they thought different. Again, we had all the Blues we could want, too bad no one wants them. We fished the usual haunt, the Reach channel.

My dad has been wanting to get one actually, he's very interested in it. Right now he wouldnt be able to afford it(Most likely), although that SI kayaking thing is interesting. I think they are done though until next year. Back in 08 we decided on a boat instead of a kayak, whenever we sell the boat we will probably get a kayak. |

blackfish bit was off a little for me today. no keepers and about 20 throwbacks between 2 people. seen some of the powerboat guys bending rods in the deeper water. the surf guys we passed had nothing when we were looking. fisherman120, you and your dad should check out the free kayak staten island program. http://www.kayakstatenisland.org/ they will get you started with all the safety instruction and a free kayak, life jacket, paddle and watchful eye of the volunteers. Or you can head out to a lake that rents them and has good fishing. like shepherds lake in ringwood NJ. get your dad to go a couple times for free and cheap and maybe he will get hooked. i found my sweetspots by putting together the times when i had a boat in the harbor and remembering the times when we fished kinda shallow, combining with my favorite surf and shore fishing spots. over the years i have put together a reliable set of places to launch near where i want to fish at that time of year. i actually catch more stripers, blues, and blackfish than i ever did by power boat or land. porgies and fluke i catch about the same numbers as my powerboat days but the average size by kayak is way smaller. but still you get a nice one here and there. keeper sea bass, bonito and albies are a rare event on the yak and i do miss that a bunch. Launching the kayak is a breeze anywhere all along the south shores. |

Im fairly young, 16, so I would need the help of my dad. How did you learn some of your sweetspots? It seems with a kayak there would be more of a learning period since you cover less ground. |

here is the yak i was using that day. a 9 foot cheapie from dicks. no outriggers but it is pretty wide. i have bigger and safer ones for open ocean and rough days but this one gets used the most. the lightness of it makes loading and unloading real easy and fast. A few installed rod holders, dry storage, paddle holders plus a couple of cleats for anchor lines and ropes with clips that i use for chunking and blackfishing. anyone can kayak fish with a little practice in the harbor. it is perfect for learning the ropes. do you have a yak mike? come on out any time ill show you the ropes. if you dont have one i have one you can borrow. |

Saturday's report: We anchored up at the 10 can in the Reach Channel around 05:45 this morning and had constant Blues all day long ranging for 7-13 pounds, no Stripers. All the fish were returned except for three, which Anthony took. After a while we lost count on how many fish we put on the deck. Wind wasn't what we heard, but it turned out to be another beautiful day on the water as soon as I started to take all those clothes off. Put a video on UTUBE. Today was a different story, first we started late around 9 and we didn't get one single bite all day. If you guy's are having problems with the Greenies why don't you use Asians?
