Subject: Oregon inlet N.C. Stripers 2/1
The striper fishing is holding on here at Oregon Inlet, with some of the largest fish to date. 30lbers have been fairly common, with the occasional 40lber thrown in, have not heard of a 50lb fish yet but some high 40’s. The last few days (1/28-2/1) we’ve had excellent fishing but you really had to work to find the fish, I’ve fished from South of the inlet at the boiler to the Duck Research Pier and most everywhere in between. Some of the most consistent action has been 50ft to 60ft of water between Kitty Hawk and Duck. Started out the week ( 1/28) at Kitty Hawk with my charter boat “Poacher” in 50ft of water with rolling fish and great action, we had a limit very quick and landed a few on light spinning tackle before making the long ride home, 20 miles one way. The afternoon was much the same with a charter limit of 18lb to 30lb stripers and a few releases. For the next 2 days ( 1/29-1/30) in was much the same, good fishing in Kitty Hawk ,but a long run, had charter limits both days and 2 big fish, both citations a 48”, 43lber for Todd Brewers group and a nice 35lber for Henry. On 1/31 the fog rolled in and we didn’t leave till late. Heard a report of a few fish being landed by the Bodie Island Lighthouse, so we stopped and had a fish on in a few minutes. Every now and again the birds would get on the fish and you would get multiple bites, all of these fish were landed trolling, stretches and double weighted parachutes in 30ft to 50ft of water. We ended up with a limit and 5 releases, the largest fish was a nice 32lber.I would like to thank the outboards for helping the charter boats that day, it saved me a 20mile run to Kitty Hawk by you reporting the fish, thanks. Yesterday was the first day out of the week that to me was good conditions. We had a hard SW wind and a cold front coming through, and the stripers didn’t let us down. Saw the birds from the highway at the boiler, south of the inlet, so we headed that way in the “Poacher”. When we stopped in 50ft of water off Pea Island there must have been several thousand gannets raining out of the sky on the fish, we didn’t get all of our rods out before we hooked a double. It stayed like that for 45minutes, 2 on, 3 on, and we quickly had a limit all nice fish 20lbs to 30lbs. We released another 4 or 5 and called it quits. These fish were landed trolling parachutes, white being the hot color in the clear water. The bite was on yesterday and there was a good bite up towards Kitty Hawk as well. I’m getting blown in today so with this strong North wind it may be a coin toss as to whether you go North or South out of Oregon Inlet on Sunday. Expect some big fish, so have your rigs in good shape. For some striper photos go to my website and hit fishing report. Good Luck, Devin Cage www.poachersportfishing.com (252) 473-6108 |

Subject: Oregon Inlet N.C. Big Ocean Stripers 11/9
Striper fishing out of Oregon Inlet this morning was fantastic! We limited out on my charter boat “Poacher”by 7:00am and released another 10 by 8:00 am, the average weight was 18lbs but expect the occasional 25lber. I caught all the fish on eels, but saw several boats hook up on bucktails and topwater. We were fishing in the inlet around the bar, so keep your eyes open or your boat will be up side down from the breakers. I also heard the big stripers hit the beach in Kitty Hawk, so there ’s lots of fish on the way, look for this fishing to improve with each cold front and the fish to get larger. I’ve also been having excellent fishing in the Manns Harbor area on my backcountry boat “ Bootlegger” catching school stripers on light tackle, catches of 50 to 80 fish common on days when the wind is out of the North. Just look for the birds. Good Luck, Devin Cage (252)-473-6108 www.poachersportfishing.com |

Subject: Oregon Inlet N.C. Inshore Fishing Report
I’ve been blown in for the past two days and thought I would get a quick fishing report out for the past week. The overall inshore picture was great from 6/6 to 6/13 with outstanding bluefishing and enough cobias to keep you interested. Cobias are scattered from Kitty Hawk to Diamond shoals with the best catches being made below Salvo in 10 to 40 feet of water, I’ve been told that the gulf stream boats are seeing them daily offshore, that’s not a good sign. The bluefishing has been the best in years and continues so, with out going tides around the inlet and looking for birds back of Oregon Inlet being the most productive method, the fish range from 1/2 lb to 2lbs and limits being common. Had several good days of spanish fishing (6/6 and 6/7) but since then the fish seemed to have moved on, once this weather calms down that should improve. I ran several all day trips and saw an increase in the wreck fishing, with good catches of sea bass, and the first triggers of the season. Had reports that some offshore wrecks are starting to hold amberjacks, I’ll try them next week. While cobia fishing this week we saw big schools of jack crevalles along the beach hooking a couple on-pitched live baits, landing one about 25lbs which we released. Striper fishing along the Oregon Inlet Bridge is productive with live bait, with most of the fish being under size. No reports of puppy drum around Oregon Inlet, although the big drum have made a couple of showings in the ocean in big schools in open water. Subject: Inshore Report / Oregon Inlet, N.C.
Fishing around Oregon Inlet and the adjoining sounds for the week of 5/26 thru 6/2 held steady action for several species. Spanish mackerel fishing was hot all week, with best catches being made in the morning south of the Inlet. Cobia fishing was fair early in the week until cold water shut it down. Striper fishing at Manns Harbor Bridge is the best it’s been all spring with catches of 40 to 50 fish in a morning possible. On the “Poacher” fishing started off with a bang on 5/27 landing a limit of spanish on the morning trip and a 58lb cobia, the (pm trip) landed 4 cobia around 25lbs and just fair spanish fishing. On 5/30 fished an all day trip catching a few sea bass, a limit of spanish, 2 cobia and releasing a 70lb black drum. On, 5/31 saw the wind shift to the NE, spanish fishing continued to hold on, but with cloudy conditions and plummeting water temps cobia fishing came to a stand still. On 6/1 wind came out of the SE and made for rough conditions along the beach, fished in the sound and had fair small bluefishing under birds, with a scattered spanish mixed in. Finished up the morning at Manns harbor catching 40 to 50 small stripers and a flounder, all the stripers were released. The cobias in this report were caught sight casting either with bucktails or pitching eels. Spanish macs were captured using small Clark spoons trolling and the stripers were taken using small bucktails and rattletraps. When the wind subsides and the water temp warms a little look for cobia south of Oregon Inlet along with good spanish mackerel fishing. Good luck, Capt. Subject: Cobia! Oregon Inlet N.C.
Spanish mackerel and cobia have arrived! Fished 2 half days on 5/25 and had charter limits of nice spanish on both trips along with the occasional 1lb bluefish. Today, 5/26 fished an all day and had a 6-man limit of spanish by 8:00am along with 25 blues. The water was slick calm and clear, perfect for cobia. Landed a 60lber and pulled off another in that class. Saw 12 cobia some wouldn’t bite, even when we pitched a live eel to them, maybe the water is still a bit cold. The cobia was landed by sight casting a bucktail on 25lb spinning gear. The spanish were landed trolling clark spoons. Best water depth was 20’ to 40‘; the action was south of Oregon Inlet. Look for the cobia fishing to really turn on in the next few weeks. Good luck, Devin Cage www.poachersportfishing.com |

Subject: Oregon Inlet N.C.Inshore Fishing Report
Inshore fishing around Oregon Inlet continues to be outstanding for several species. The bluefishing is the best it’s been in years, with catches of several hundred fish possible in a morning with the average weight being around 1lb and lot’s of them pushing 3lbs. Striped bass continue to bite at Manns harbor with steady action for catch and release. The spanish mackerel are starting to show and flounder fishing in the sound is off to the best start in years. I’ve ran several trips this week with limits of blues and a few spanish to the trip. Today ( 5/22) I ran an all day trip, ending up in Avon on Hatt. Island looking for cobia and spanish and had no luck with either, just lot’s of cold water. I feel like maybe another week or so for the cobia, but the next calm day spanish fishing should improve. Good luck, Devin Cage, www.poachersportfishing.com
