GALVESTON FISHING REPORTS 4-08-10

To everyone that has read my reports in the past, you know my favorite line is LOL! "With good weather conditions brings good fishing." Well we have had our consistent WINDY March and April! I usually complain about the wind in my reports every Spring, but I have gotten so use to it that there is no need. ! My brother Capt. Steven and I have started running our Spring Break and Family Fun Trips during these months to avoid having to cancel so many trout trips. It has been good for our customers and for us. These trips can be really fun for the kids or for anglers that want to catch bigger fish. We will start running some trout only trips in the next few weeks, so check back for those reports. Overall fishing the Jetties has been really productive for us over the past two weeks. (excluding the windy days) We are still catching redfish, sheep head, puppy drum and oversized drum on these trips. We are using live crab for bait for the drum, but they are hard to come by because of the high demand right now. You can also use white squid or live crawfish to catch these oversized drum. As for trout fishing I have been hearing that the trout are starting to show up more and more as the water continually warms. The trout should start to school up soon and that will produce better and more consistent numbers. From what I have heard, the bays are also full of healthy redfish. I have been catching a lot of 17-19 inch redfish on my trips with a few keepers mixed in. The lower Galveston Bay System including West Bay is holding a lot of these same redfish. (just undersized) When the wind starts to subside in the next few weeks, (hopefully) I look for the trout reports to be better. We will be fishing some different areas this next week and fishing for speckled trout, so check back in two weeks! For Houston and the surrounding area residents, I am going to start giving some fishing seminars at Bass Pro Shops Pearland location and possible some Academy locations on Saturdays in the next month and through Summer. I will be there to answer any questions you have about saltwater fishing and I will also be giving away some CastAway Products. I will give you some dates and more information on my next report. Until next time, see you on the water.

Well it is already Feb. and Spring is coming up. Spring is consistently a great time to fish, getting the kids out for a spring break trip is always a good idea. Nothing is better than seeing a huge smile on a kids face after a great day of fishing. March is also a great time for catching speckled trout and from what I have experienced and have been told by my peers, fishing in Spring and Summer has been outstanding after a very cold winter. So I look forward to some awesome fishing in the next couple of months! Don't worry about a fish kill, most of the fish that has been killed is bait fish and trash fish. Now I'm sure some quality fish have also been effected, but not to a point that it should have any negative effect on future fishing. I haven't been on the water too much lately, due to minor boat repairs, sponsor events and some really cold and windy weather. I have been talking to some guides that have been having some great days on the water and catching some big trout (6-8 pound trout). When the weather has been decent, the fish are being caught. Now as far as location protected areas far north and some areas in West bay have been the best. Most of the same hot spots that people fish every winter. Soft plastics and live shrimp under a cork (if you can find it) has produced the best results. Waders are using top water baits to catch most of those big trout. When I get on the water on a regular basis in about 2 weeks, I will post a more informational report. Well until next time, see you on the water.

Well this time of the year fishing can be outstanding and most anglers just don’t take advantage of it! I do understand that the weather plays a huge role in people not fishing this time of the year and people are out shopping or staying home because it is cold, but if you really want to have a great day fishing Dec. is a great month to go. Limits of trout have been the norm lately and the flounder have been biting. I have noticed that the flounder we have been catching seem to be bigger this year. Five pound flounder are being caught daily by most anglers. Of course weather is are main culprit this time of the year, but when we get on the water the fishing has been good. We have been fishing up north for a couple of months now, mainly Trinity Bay using soft plastics to catch most of our fish. The bigger trout are being caught over shell in shallow water. West Bay is starting to produce good trout so we will start fishing it soon. The flounder are still around the channel and around Seawolf Park. In a week or two the flounder run will be over. Even though fishing might not be a priority right now, if you want to get out one last time before next year or purchase a gift certificate for someone special for Christmas give us a call. Well until next time, see you on the water.

Fall is here and fishing has started to heat up! Two to three weeks ago fishing was a bit slow, but in the past 10 days I have seen a huge change and the fishing has really picked up. At the beginning of fall we were catching fish, but the trout we were catching were undersized trout 13-16 inch trout. Our ratio of throw backs to keepers were around 1 out of 6. Now we are on better schools with more keeper trout and the sand trout and gulf trout action is non stop at times. We are mainly using soft plastics to catch our fish and depending on the weather we have used live shrimp under a cork at some locations. We are pretty much fishing under the birds in Trinity Bay and when they aren’t working, we are drifting some reefs or anchored on the shoreline. Fall is typically a great time to take a trip, the weather is great and fishing is even better. It’s a great time to get the family out one last time before winter comes. Before I end this report I want to give everyone a great tip on fishing in the fall. When you are fishing under the birds or where there are a lot of smaller fish your fishing equipment and gear can be the key to catching keeper fish. Your fishing rod is very important. You need a rod that you can fish soft plastics with and sensitive enough to feel those bites. I use the Castaway Skeleton rod and it makes fishing with artificial baits so easy. So invest in a good Castaway rod so you can get those long cast and that action you need to entice those trout to bite. Also use a good scented artificial bait. There are some great scented baits on the market, but I prefer bassassassins and fishbites. Don’t under estimate using the right fishing equipment, you will catch more quality fish. Well until next time, see you on the water.

Fishing has been a litlle slow lately for us due to the weather. We are still managing to catch some nice fish, but we are in a traditional period right now and with the rainy and windy days over the past 2 weeks fishing has been inconsistant. We have had to really move around and trying to avoid the big reds and sharks have been hard to do. Most customers like to catch 1 or 2 over sized reds and then move on. We have been catching some slot reds too along with some big gulf and sand trout. The specks under the birds have mostly been under sized, but that should change any day now. Fall fishing should be outstanding this year! As for location we have been fishing East bay and Trinity bay according to the wind and water clarity. Live shrimp under a cork and soft plastics have been our choice of baits. If you would like to see our latest catches or book a fall trip please check out our website. Well until next time, see you on the water.

Fishing has been really good to excellent lately. We have had a few days that just didn’t produce the numbers we have been use to, but overall most of our trips have been outstanding. The only thing that has slowed us down has been the weather and slack tides. The trout are so healthy this year! We have had some trips where we have had to release some trout over the 25 in. range because we already had one per person in the box. I’m really pleased with the quality of the fish we have been catching. Another thing I have noticed is the gulf trout and the sand trout have shown up this year and we have been catching some between the 15in. and 20in. range regularly. It seems like our bay system is refreshed and all the species are healthy and plentiful. As for locations I here that all of our bay systems are producing. The hot spots have been the shorelines in Trinity Bay, fishing shallow with top waters has been best, The mid bay reefs in East Bay have been great when the water is clean, the channel has been solid and the wells have also been consistent. Live croaker has worked best for us drifting over shell in 6-8 ft. of water. I expect the fishing to remain strong over the next couple of weeks as long as our weather is decent. Our bays have been cleaned up of most of the visable debris and our bays have been thriving since Ike, so don't hesitate to get out and catch some quality fish! Until next time, see you on the water.

Hello everyone! It has been awhile since I have posted a report. I actually don't have too many trips during Jan. or Feb. but the trips we have taken have been pretty productive. Trout have been good to fair and we have been catching some quality redfish also. Sandtrout for the kids have been excellent. Live shrimp and gulps have been the bait of choice. We should start to get really busy this next month so I'll have some better reports. Until next time, I will see you on the water! www.galveston-fishing.com

First I want to apologize for not posting a report lately my computer was down. Everything is up & running now. As for fishing the past 2 weeks it has been excellent at times and average to slow at times too. Last week we were on 3-6lb. trout everyday & limits of trout for four days, then came the FULL MOON & fishing slowed down. We still managed to catch some fish, but not nearly the numbers we were on. On Mon. & Tues. of this week we had near limits both days, then on Weds. the wind made a nasty appearance & Thurs., Fri. & Sat. were really tough. We were only out there because we were in tournaments. When the winds are 25-35 mph it's really hard to catch fish. As for locations Trinity & East bay over shell reefs have been the best for us. Maybe the channel will turn on soon. We should get some good weather this week so fishing should really turn back on. We are still using croaker for bait. The croaker bite can be tricky so listen to your guide & you will catch a lot more fish!!! Well until next time, See you on the water!!!

Well the wind just won't go away. I'm sick of complaining about it , but it is just sticking around like a lost puppy. Yes we are still having some good to excellent trips, but it has been a grind. We can handle some strong winds on our bay system, but 20mph-30mph from the SW is just horrible. I'm sure glad we fish out of a 24ft. Kenner! Anyway about fishing my brother and I have been catching some nice size trout over the past week. We have had atleast 10 trout in the 4 pound range and 4 over 25 inches. Some trips have produced 15-27 trout and some (WINDY DAYS) we have been able to catch 10-15 trout. I consider that great for the crazy conditions we have had to deal with. We have also been able to box some good size sand trout and whiting. I have also noticed that the big gafftops are moving in. I bring that up because big schools of trout are usually right behind them and the bays traditionally turn on when they arrive. We are still using live shrimp under a cork to catch our trout , but the second the open bays clean up we will switch to croaker. As for locations it all depends on the wind. Lower West bay, up and down the Causeway, Campbells area and TX city shoreline up to Dollar has held the best water. The south shoreline in East bay has also had some decent catches for waders. Best advice look for slicks and nervous bait, be patient , but after 30 minutes or so without a bite move to another area. Sometimes moving 50 yards can make a big difference. If you want to check out some pictures from our recent trips - check out our home page. I want to congratulate my brother for winning 1st place in the Pasadena Police Dept. annual fishing tourn. He weighed in 3 trout at 12.80 pounds in the pro division. His big trout was 6.84. Way to go Bro. Anyway until next time. See you on the water.

Would like to go deep sea fishing Nov 27,28, or 29th. I'm coming in from out of town and going by myself. Is there a boat where I could join a charter, or one that has an individual rate? I would like to stay away from "party" boats, but can't afford to pay for an entire charter just for myself!

Well I have been out of pocket for a while but have been fishing. As the weather changes so does the pattern of fish movement. Be looking into the deeper water around Offats Bayou and along warm water discharges. Although things may start off a little slow, remember the fish have slowed down so you need to slow your retrieve down and consider a 1/8 jig head if using soft plastics. The fish will not be feeding hard so you must post a strike. Good luck and happy holidays to you all. See ya on the water.

Finally the 100 degree plus days and West winds have backed off and the redfish have started to move back into the marsh and along shorelines. Early mornings have been great with awesome sight casting from the boat(poling)and wadefishing. Fly fishermen and lure fishermen have done well and the redfish do not seem to be particular as to fly or lure color or selection. Visit us at www.thesaltwaterguide.com for other sight casting opportunities.

Fished Saturday from 6a-2p. The wind was suppose to be blowing from every direction. Got on the water and found that the wind was not blowing and the water was in good shape in Trinity.Very few boats out because of the wind scare. Very few fish caught but things should turn around shortly. The water temp. according to my chill factor when I jumped into the water to wade indicated that the water had cooled somewhat. Not a lost day since I was on the water fishing.

WELL AS MOST EVERYONE KNOWS THE WATER IS HOT ENOUGH TO BOIL THE TROUT. THE GOOD THING IS THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER SO THE WATER TEMP SHOULD BE COMING DOWN. WITH THIS IN MIND AND TEH HIGHER TIDES THE SHRIMP SHOULD BE PUSHED OUT OF THE SALTGRASS INTOTHE BAYS. WITH THIS THE BIRD ACTION SHOULD PICK UP. KEEP AN EYE OUT ON THE NORTH END FOR WORKING BIRDS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

Fished the outgoing tide today out of eagle point. Caught 15 trout from 17"-23" and about 30 gafftops with 3 between 22" and 25" We also caught a 20+ pound jackfish (released). All the action was on croakers. Tight lines!
