Yip, add us to the list of those left tuna-less after a solid search. Brought home some nice lings and reds though!

We worked the inside of the plume around 34'50/121'00-10 ish. Nice blue water, 62 degrees, fairly hard edge, jumping bait, bait on the meters but nobody on the chew. We tried the long soaks on marks and tried to bring 'em up...

Great teamwork on the water today. Everyone really spread out and we covered a lot of ground. Thanks to all of you for that!

Went on the tuna chase today for nada. Worked the plume south of the Morro bunch (121' 12 34' 43"). Gave up at about 1:30 and headed for Purissima. Then back to PSL
Saw whales, no birds or bait. Did meter some fish very deep 400-600 ft. Water to 62 degrees.
Thanks to all for the help on and off the water today!

What to do, What to do.. Is to take a trip to Bahia de Los Angeles next weekend. I'll be traveling there by bus from Paso Robles with Steve (El Vagabondo), I'm sure we'll have a good time. The cost is $725. There will be 3 or 4 women on the trip that will only fish a day or two. If you decide to bring your wife, she'll have company on the beach. Adjustments of price will be made for non-fishers.

Talk at Portside Marine was that there were no LFT caught today. Bummer.. It looked sooooo good on the SST map. Guess we'll can it for tomorrow and save the fuel.

I don't think there were any albacore caught today. Most of the boats gave up around 1 pm and went inside to get some rockfish before it closes. That area south was worked pretty hard today so I guess that leaves the break west of Morro and the one outside the Cape San Martin buoy. Good luck if you go.

Keeping the fingers crossed for sure...it's only the last day of September, guys.
On my way to SF tomorrow to visit my pops...get to go salmon fishing Monday with an old friend who bought my old boat...so I'll be fishing on my old sweetie! The salmon have been going off some days off the Marin coast...some toads, too.
Dustin...I'll be in your area Wednesday evening...hint hint...we'll chat!

My Mistake. Virg's did not go out today. Probably couldn't get a boat load.

Harrell, I guess you haven't heard from any of the private boaters?

Well, its 4:30 PM and Virg's hasn't said anything about the tuna fishing today. One could infer that there is nothing exciting to report.

I want to make a run tommorrow; it would be nice to hear a positive report!

Fished PSL today with my pop in the skiff. Got a nice 1/4 scoop of med/large dines from Deke. Headed up to the Pea Patch. First line in the water by 7 a.m. Fished hard until 1 pm. Caught several rockfish (released), kept two nice cabs, 1 ling, and 1 28" halibut. May have had 2 or 3 other halibut on, but the hooks pulled. Pretty slow fishing, but we still managed a good catch. Gorgeous day on the water...shorts and t-shirt weather for sure.
Hope to fish halibut some more, but will have to make my own bait...this was Deke's last day unless the albacore pick up.
best fishes,
steve

Bill;
Be sure the rotors are not warped and then go with the Tie Down calipers unless money is no object ! Kodiacs are better and for salt water go stainless.

Just talked to the tuna prospectors and still nothing yet.

Hi Guys & Gals,

Well, here’s where I’m at: replaced the axles on my ten year old trailer and in doing so, found that the Tie Down calipers (two years old) were defunct (hubs and rotors were fine). So, my question is – do I just replace the calipers (at a cost of about $150) or replace everything with Kodiak at $500+? Also, if I go Kodiak, which one - silver cad or stainless?

Well, I’m off for a few days to a retired State Park Ranger function – looking for lots of replies by the time I get home.

Thanks
Bill

Early report;

There are some boats working that plume water to the south pretty hard. They haven't reported anything yet. Some meter marks and jumping bait is all so far. The water is a little lumpy with some white caps but not intimidating.

Yes, rockfish is closing tomorrow night at midnight from Pt. Lopez to Conception. It is still open above 36:00 untill December. It is also open from Pt. Conception to Mex border. You could still run up above the 36:00 line (50nm) and catch them but you need a permit to bring them into Morro Bay. The permit is $30/yr.

SST/ Chlorophyll
That water to the south is looking even better on this morning's Shot and it is clean blue as close as 25nm from PSL. The weather forecasts don't look bad but not great either. The run home from the south is pretty much into a NW wind and swell so extra caution is needed.

Why o they call it the Donut ?
If you look on chart 18700 at the numbers Darby posted you will see a big round high spot. It looks more like the hole in the donut but has been called the donut since, forever !

The doughnut numbers are roughly 34 44' and 121 37'. Ideal bait right now if the weather will cooperate. I will be coming down with a boat from SF on Saturday, if I see anything will call on ch19. The Terrafin pic looks real good on the North end or South. I'd start North but best to spread out. We should get a short wack at 'em still.

i'm from up north (chico) and have fished out of psl before but don't know the donut area you guys keep referring to...any info (why it's called that) gps #'s, etc. would sure help. also, what are the #'s for the psl harbor.

we're hungry for albacore and the water temp's are tempting enough to make a run down south.

Probably Fish Friday and might start around 34'50" - 35'00" / 121'10" - 121'20" and work toward the donut. Depends on SSTs for the next couple. I do like the break above the elbow but the jumpers are tempting us South.

There's a 50 mile hard-edge that runs all the way from Cape San Martin Buoy down toward the Donut, warm blue water against cold green. It looks very impressive. Also, the water that was holding tuna off Monterey has slid south toward us. This is encouraging. Does anyone know the Billy Boy's bait situation?

KAD42 VOLVO DIESEL FOR SALE $4,000 or best offer

This engine is still in the boat and being used til next week when I re-power. Runs strong, and has had, quite a bit of bolt-on equipment replaced in the past 3 years. It is a 1994, with 4,000 hours on it, and it's been well maintained. If your interested, you should check it out while it is still in the boat. I am holding off putting the new engine in, because I feel that this engine should be seen by taking a ride in the boat, instead of looking at it sitting on a pallet. It comes with everything, except the outdrive - gages, wirng harness, rams, pump, transom shield & exhaust manifolds.

We took a ride to the dougnut Monday. It was flat calm with no wind all day. There was several small schools of big(35+#tuna) chasing very small anchovies. They were jumping all over the approx. 5 mile area. we were on a friends boat with no bait and they would not take luers(Feathers,Ceders,Tuna Traps, Rapalas).Wish we had bait!!! 34'45/ 121'34

SST/Chlorophyll/Rumors

A good SST this morning and a good chlorophyll shot from yesterday. The strange looking stuff on the SST posted yesterday has all gone away or at least changed a bunch. The same break/plume around 35:00/121:50 is still there and clean. A lot of green water inside of it.
The most interesting water is coming in from the SW across the 1908/donut area and headed towards Avila. This has been a good sign in past seasons and I can remember a lot of fish being caught, this time of the year, in the plumes coming in from the southwest below the 35 line ! This is clean blue water that connects to the outside water.
Now for the rumor; A boat was in the vicinity of the donut yesterday and saw many, many jumping albacore !! No confirmation as yet.

Yes Matt, somethig strange going on out there ! The Cape San Martin buoy hit 64 today . Wish that cloud wasn't covering the outside of that 30 mile break, it looks like it could be connected and there is 65 degree water above and outside the elbow. It was clear out there this afternoon so shoud be a good SST sometime in the morning.

The URL provided by Jack /Valhalla for the pdf for the September 2005 DFG Marine Management News is not correct; it will get you the June 2005 issue. Use http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/newsletter/mmn0905.pdf to see the September issue which you can print if you wish.

I don't understand why one isn't allowed to save the file so that it can be accessed later when off-line? Surely there aren't any legitimate security concerns.

I made the long run to ragged point sun. for great fishing limits of reds and lings. A total of 120 lbs. for three fisherman. Stoped in front of cambria for the last two fish and helped out the T-Bone who had a small boat fire. Coast guard was on scene in thirty minuts. Great day on the water. The big fish was an average 33" ling.

Headed down to Purisma today in the Avocation. Crazy slow in the morning...only 1 red in the box by 11 a.m. Then the bite picked up and we caught several nice reds, bolina and 3 keeper lings. Many other blues, blacks, gophers and yellows released. Big red was 8 pounds. Big ling was 10 pounds. Slow fishing by Purisma standards, but still brought back a pile of fish. Nice day on the water, no wind all day:-)
Best fishes,
steve

Fished out of MB today, went south to off Hazard canyon caught a few of the biggest blues weve seen this year released two short lings and a few small gophers, no live bait available, oh well, used the trip mostly to practice using our new GPS/VHF. We may make a Wed trip out of PSL (if I can get up the nerve to play hooky)Good luck to all, Mike Green

Our planned LFT trip for Sunday did not pan out. So, no report is coming. I am not ready to completely give up for this year; maybe next weather window.

As far as November prospects- by my memory and records, very little to be expected by the time November rolls around, even on the real good years.

Wow....sad commentary on the LFT counts and Rock Season is all but done! Incredible amounts of expensive fuel and time for very little return. Those that ventured out deserve a big "thumbs up" for sure! We had a pretty incredible Rockfish bite going all season but the LFT's just didn't cooperate with our capabilities.

Looks like I'll be hanging up all the custom rods and new Avets that have been hoping to get bent on some big fish and start prepping the decoys and the blind at the club...Waterfowl Season is just under a month away and there's still a Colorado Cow Elk and Buck trip to be had in early November. Time to meet the "other" sickness head on till the end of January!

Best to all with what remains of our season, I look forward to and hope we have one next year!

I was out on the last 2 Virg's Albacore trips that got totally skunked. Enough to dampen my enthusiasm for this area.
But I just got my boat out of repair - just in time for rockfish closure!! Want to give it a last gasp try anyway. I have a 19' Bayliner. Can't go a long way out, so I'm hoping tomorrow or Monday to go for lings or rock cod. Any one have some hot coordinates to share? Would really appreciate any input.
My trip to Bahia de Los Angeles in Baja, Mexico, still has a few openings for anyone interested in Yellowtail, Dorado, Grouper and/or White Seabass. Oct 8-12. We WILL catch fish there!

I just got back from up north. Fished 55-60 miles due west of Santa Cruz. Wound up with 6 albies 30-40lbs. No live bait in Santa Cruz. All fish came on rapalas. I fished for salmon on thurs. no luck. I heard of a hot bite out of the Golden Gate. I towed up to Sausilito thurs night. Friday was a bust, the fish disappeared and the winds blew 30+ knot winds over 10ft seas. KInd of scarey. It seems that due west of Santa Cruz is the place to go. I know of 3 boats that explored the weanie and down into Sur Canyon for nothing. The only area that I haven't heard of being explored is the Davidson area. Long way to go on a hunch.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Just in from a 3-dayer fishing from Dana starting on 9/20 and ending on 9-22. Covered major ground and burned 260-gallons of diesel for a big skunk. My 2nd 3-dayer targeting marlin, tuna, and paddies this past month down south and I did not see one single fish under a paddie fishing long days over a 6-day run. Saw one unconfirmed jumper inside the 181 and one quick spot of feeders off the east end of Cat. I had the Binos in my face alot plus we had a pricey Eal lure dragging in the pattern too. Perhaps fishing on the backside of this cut-off low had something to do with our lack of results but I think the warmer water is pulling out. It's Fall. Very dissapointing outcome given the time and effort we gave.

Really wish the albies would get going off Morro soon. Water looks right. May be time to consider expanding our horizons a bit and running outside San Miguel Isle to search for tuna beyond the Rodriguez Seamount. Post if anyone's able to join in the hunt a bit further south and offshore. It's about a 75m run from SB Hbr and 90m from Ventura. Both ports have live bait but SB has been much more inconsistent in the past with Ltd hours of ops.

Probably head for the area around 08/58; what looked promising a few days ago.

Hey! I just got on his E-mail list and received my first report from him.

========== DCPP Weather Forecast for Friday 09/23/05 ==============

SEA/SWELL:

Strong northwesterly winds along the California coastline will
generate a 6 to 8 foot northwesterly (290°) sea/swell (with a 5-11
second period) along the Diablo Canyon coastline this afternoon
through Saturday afternoon, decreasing to 5 to 7 feet by Saturday
night.

Note: Wave heights will be higher along northwesterly facing
beaches and the offshore buoys.

Combined with this northwesterly sea/swell will be a 1 to 3 foot
southern hemisphere (195°) swell (with a 17-19 second period) today
and Friday. This swell should peak at 2 to 3 feet (with a 14-16 second
period) on Saturday and Sunday.

This northwesterly (295°) sea/swell will become a 3 to 5 foot
northwesterly swell (with a 9-11 second period) on Sunday, further
falling to 2 to 4 feet (with a 9-11 second period) on Monday.

A 2 to 4 foot northwesterly (295°) sea/swell (with a 5-10 second
period) will develop along our coastline on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looks like the weather window has moved to Sun/Mon. Did you notice on John's (PG&E) report the buoy reading in the Gulf of 38 ft at 13 sec ? And we complain of 6 ft at 6 sec readings !
Sand Dabs:
I have found that 80-90 ft on sandy bottom has been the most productive for us. You can find them deeper but it takes a lot longer to get them up and some will get off.

Yes Walt, I still use it although not as much the last two seasons! Been pretty slow for albacore here not like three or four years ago when it was 20 fish at 20 miles most of the time. Also the weather has not been very good lately. The good days are few and far between. The last two years the majority of tuna have baypassed us and went north. We get a few but you have to go long and work hard for them. We were catching them here before El Nino but I don't remember any details. We caught them in the 60's on the party boat ( I think it was the Mallard). Welcome back !

There were some albacore caught in the Monterey area yesterday out beyond the 123 line, a 50-60 mile run. I think Saltydoc was up there and I hope he found them.

Do we usually only get good Albacore fishing in MB when there is an El Nino? I remember when I moved to MB in 1981 - nobody even talked about albacore then. I later hears MB went about 10 years without a sign of them. Any insight would be appreciated.

Lucky thing that that is a mammal swimming in that wave. Check the shape of the dorsal fin, it is raked back, not triangular. I witnessed the real thing in 1969 in Solana Beach, a huge whitey trying to eat me. I still have nightmares.
