Blackie,
The baja trip was a lot of fun. We had to pull the cork on the Bay of LA due to high winds; I would estimate a constant 30 kmh with gusts to 60. For lack of a better word I'd say there were very large water devils or small water spouts dancing across the bay. They were cool to watch. We decided to head up to San Quintin to fish for 2 days. We targeted yellow tail and succeeded. The fish were about 15#. It started out as one of those days when I couldn't do anything right. I had listened to Butler talk about his success with MB albacore for a day or so on the bus and then had to watch him boat 3 nice YT while I dealt with a nasty backlash. Apparently I achieved proper depth as I hooked up as soon as I started winding. We then caught a few more before targeting RF. The next day was slower for us on the YT action. I only caught one that was snagged in the eye. He came up easily. We then fished for RF and brought up 6 lings in a row and then proceeded to load the boat.
If anyone is interested in future trips, Send me your email or snail-mail address and Steve will put you on his mailing list. Mel, Here's another item to add to your cookbook. I typically bacon wrap 1.5" cubed pieces of LFT and grill them till there pink in the middle and dip them in the following sauce:
1 part soy/tamari sauce to 1 part basalmic vinegar also adding a splash of sesame oil and a dash of garlic salt.
Congrats on the baby Carl, see you at next years RTF dinner.

Thanks for the info guys, I think we will run out of Ventura Harbor to the gap between Anacapa and Santa Cruz. It looks to me like the ramp is accessed off Beachmont Street from Harbor Blvd, Is this correct? We have a map with the MPA's from last year. Are they the same this year or did they change. Thanks again for the info. Also what channel do sport fishers use in this area? Thanks Matt

After I got home from our eight day fishing trip, the County of Santa Clara called my wife and I to tell us they have a child for us for adoption. That was last Thrusday, we we picked the kid last Friday. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep, the kid is a month old.

Tomorrow is the better day for the wind. Big swell arriving Saturday night into Sunday. You can fish the Gap in between Anacapa and Cruz for bottom fish. Just meter around and find some stones. Your bigger fish will come from Rosa and Miguel but for your first trip stay close and get a better feel of the area. If you do choose to run out of SB I would run to the west end of Cruz and outside the closure at Carrington Point / Santa Rosa. Real fun fishing there. Also make sure you stay in 180' or less. If you don’t have a map of the MPA (Marine Protection Area's) it might be a good idea to buy one. I for one like Ventura Harbor but either is fine.

Good luck if you go! Have fun. Fog was pea soup this morning with heavy drizzle.

You can launch at Ventura or CIH, The Islands are actually 4 miles closer to CIH and the ride home is a better angle. There are no shallow water hazards going across. There is one platform like 6 mils out of both harbors, Gina out of CIH and Gilda out of Ventura. We also can have a pretty heavely traveled shipping channel so if there is fog, which there will be this weekend, you def want radar. If you plan to spend the night, Smugs on the east end of Cruz is a good bet, lots of bait and sandy bottom.

Dave (My three sons),
I'm thinking about making the run south to cure the no fishin flu. Two years ago we went on a party boat to the south tip of anacapa and did pretty well. We were in 300' water at that time and never got in the shallow stuff. As I remember, Anacapa was 12 or so miles from channel islands harbor. The ride on the trailer is obviously longer to ventura but it looks like the crossing on the water is shorter. We have plenty of range since we are fishing a diesel boat but at 21' the weather is always my primary concern. Our boat will also only run about 20kts so we don't really have the speed to run home quickly. What is your opinion as to the fishabilty this weekend Sat/Sun. Also is the ramp in Santa Barbara at the harbor where the yacht club is or somewhere else. We have a map card GPS so I dont think we will have any trouble finding the islands. Are there any shallow hazards on the crossing, I know there are rigs out there and assume they will show on the radar. Is it safe to spend the night out at the islands to get two days fishing in without making the run across both days? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Matt

Just a 'sub' post to an email I sent Mike Green.
It was a pleasure to also read a bit about some reports on the 'freshy' waters in our area. Fishin is fishin and all you guys and gals, put out great reports for all to see and from this end and I am sure of others, it is a most welcome report that everyone puts out. It was just nice to see a small report concerning the fresh water lakes in the surrounding area of SLO and SB Counties. Thanks again Mike and thanks for the email reply!

Left San Francisco Monday AM. Hit 60 degree off colored water just outside of the Farralons. Trolled down to between the Gumdrop and the Pioneer with 3 other boats for nothing on Monday. Drifted Monday night. Started AM. Tues. in this area and trolled outside of the Guide and ended up 110 miles west of Moss Landing Tues evening for One fish caught by one of the boats I was traveling with. He was 40 miles outside of me or 150 miles west of Moss Landing. Drifted Tues. Night. Am Wed. trolled down through the Davidson and below the San Martin Buoy. No fish caught on any boats. Drifted off of Piedras Blancas. Home into Morro Bay this morning. We were in clean 59.5 to 62 degree water practically the whole time. No birds, no life on the meter, no nothing. Sad report but true. It has been 19 years since I fished off the Central Coast. Has the Halibut fishing gotten good since the gillnet ban? Are there still plenty of fat Sacramento River Kings down there? We used to have a blast beetween White Rock and Lopez Point. Sometimes we caught salmon and halibut just trolling in 20 fathoms beetween those spots.

Just got in from our trip to San Carlos Mex. Fished three out of four days with only one day blown out. Brought back two 150 qt ice chests full of Dorado, Blueback tuna and shrimp (the shrimp we bought at Guaymas). Biggest fish was a 30 lb Dorado. Also released 1 Marlin.

A+ for trying Bob !! Steve Moore, Patriot Sport Fishing, Is trolling down the coast now looking for albacore. Lets hope he finds some.

I bet those fish are there but it may require a bit more of a group effort to pin down the eager schools that are ready to bite the jigs. Curious: Did you have live and is the bait barge still going to hang hang a bit longer? Again, major thanks to you and the bait guys!!!!

Today's run for tuna produced no fish. I had heard that last week a commercial unloaded 94 swordfish, some bluefin and albacore from just below the 1908. Terrafin showed a 59 degree break at 53 mi and then a 60 degree break at 70mi. As we ran out the fog began at 30 so we couldn't look for birds until we were out about 50. The temp breaks we were looking for had moved in overnite by almost 10 mi. So I over shot the closer break and ended up running 69 knts on a 228 heading to get to 60 degree water where there was almost no sea life. We trolled for four hours on a 270 along the break's edge for nothing. Returning in clear weather we saw lots of life in 58 degree water from 35 to 45 mi out in 58 degree water. The bait balls of anchovie were numerous and up to 1/2 acre in size. Whales, turns, porpoise, sealions were all working the bait. We soaked live bait for only about 15 minutes becuase it was late, we got shark bit and I never saw a tuna break water. If I were going out tomorrow I would return to that same area.

Unless BOB finds the fish , you may be SURF fishing with the rest of the CALIFORNIANS,or you could fish off the rocks , also just heard the weather say 15 ft swells next week that remains to be seen.
Not much info to report from the president at the club meetingabout the MLPA ,if you need any more info go to the DFG web site .

Here is a rotten fish report from me, wishing I had gone offshore instead, Fished Santa Margarita Sunday
tried lots of different techniques, trolling, crankbaits, worms. caught (and apologised to) 8 LM bass very small, one redear and one bluegill.
Boy, we sure miss the rockfish.
Anyway it was probably good for the boat doing a freshwater run.
Any halibut seen? Mike Green.

I'm still considering a run for tuna tomorrow. It looks like there is a temp break of 59 degrees at 55mi on a 250 from the Rock. I'll post later today to confirm. Andrew, this year there were no reports of close fish but in the past we have caught albacore from 3 to 80mi out.

Antikbuff,
As you know fishing ain't cheap.

The base price was $1,895
Permits (estimatinng here) $120
Fuel Surcharge $120
Tip $300
Total 2,435
or $304 per day.

Fish processing fees depends on how much you want to have processed, my cost was $380 but I had a lot of fish.

Price does not include fishing gear and tackel bought for the trip.

You can bet the cost is going up with fuel prices on the climb.

Hi Darby,

You may also recall Mike and Gordon's dad also ran the Captain Midnight out of 5th street landing. It was located between Rose's and the Fish Bowl. The Mallard use to run of Rose's. They had a Philippino gal that cleaned fish and to this day I've never seen anyone clean as fast as she did. That was a time when you could dump the fish carcass in the bay, the bay was teaming with life. I saw a guy pull a 10lb ling from under Roses. The bait reciever was in the middle of the bay, great place to catch halibut. We use to catch big Jack Smelt use lucky joes in the bay, those were the days.

I know this isn't a fishing report, but there havent been many here latley. I went quail hunting here in the vally and have never seen so many birds. WE drove around for an hour until we saw our first covy and then it was limits in 30 min. NO secret spots the only water in the area is the Aquaduct hint hint.

I didn't think you were that old Darby. I always dreamed of getting something going at San Simeon in the 70's. I remember when they put that little crane in for launching small craft, and then never fired it up. I heard it was an insurance problem with the state. I was ready with my aluminum skiff. Fishing was awesome in the early 70's, even here in Cayucos at the landing at Bruce's cove. If our 15 fish didn't weigh 150 pounds minimum, it was a so-so day. I have my own crane now at the cove, but I'm too old to use it. Heh Heh

I have never heard a bad report from the Vagabond. Mike and Gordan's father ran a boat called the Bonanza off of San Simeon pier in the 70's. Mike and Gordan and I were deckhands and Gordon did some cooking too. They told me I couldn't cook unless I was eating it. Not without reason. We carried 64 people back then and ran full almost every day all summer long on the long range trips to Pt. Lopez. The Lackey's always loved the fishing and did well with the people. Personally I wouldn't call it fun but it was good fishing with a great crew and made for alot of good stories! Just a bit of history.

Wow, that sounds like a great trip...thanks for the post!
Makes me drool.
Looks as if the first winter-type low is on its way...no fishing down here in SB this weekend; wind forecast is positively ugly.
If a couple of you need more SB rockfish info just let me know; Tim's (Tailchaser) info is correct re depth restrictions. The nice thing about our island spots is that we still have tons and tons of good spots under 180'...more fun (as you know) at that depth anyway.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We left Santa Cruz Friday at 8:00 PM and basted straight down to San Diego in 7 hours flat. Brilliant planning as it was now 3:00AM with the boat boarding in only 7 hours. Lucky for us we had a bottle of Crown Royal which made the time pass rather fast. We boarded about 10:00 AM and loaded a nice batch of lively sardines and headed for the open water. The way Captain Mike said "LETS GO FISHING" when he was done with the bait made a lasting impression on me. It was clear to me at this point that man was as excited as any of us to go on the hunt. Although I've heard these words many times before I have never sensed such enthusiasm in a Captain. We were a little concerned about the hurricane in our path but we knew Mike would have a plan. The plan was to head out to Isla Guadalupe and wait for the nasty weather to pass. Then we would slip in behind the Hurricane and fish the Rocas Alijos.
The first night we had a fine Prime Rib dinner. Our chef Rick was to make sure that no one went hungry on this boat. He and his helper John did a fantastic job. We were fed three great meals a day with snacks in between every morning and afternoon. We ate Steak, Lobster, Baked Ham, a full Turkey Dinner, Pasta, Teriyaki Chicken, Ahi Maguro and Hamachi Sashimi. We also had Cake, Pies, Ice Cream, Cheese Cake, and Cobler. Lunch was Spaghetti, Ruben Sandwiches, Mahi Mahi burgers , BBQ Beef, Ahi Salad, make your own deli sandwiches with several choices of meat and fixings. Breakfast was bacon and eggs , ham steak, biscuits and gravy, pancakes , cereal, scrambled eggs or sunny side up, and even eggs benedict one morning ! All the food was fine quality with huge portions. If the main course did not agree with someone Rick always had another tasty option. In short screw the diet for the week and enjoy the great food. What the hell, your on vacation !
The first day fishing was at Guadalupe. We only had some small yellows and 4 bigger fish broke off for the day. Pretty slow start and the weather was in fact nasty. I had dinner at last call and was stuffed and happy and thinking about my bunk after desert. I decided to try to soak some bait before turning in. There were four of us fishing at the stern as we sat on the hook at the south side of the island. I had just changed my bait out and made a rather poor cast when the 40 lb string started leaving my Avet LX at quite a good clip. I was thinking
" Wow this bait is really swimming good " when it dawned on me that deens don't swim that fast. I slid the lever into strike and it was game on. The 3/0 owner mutu finding hold really woke this fish up. My 100 yrd top shot was gone in seconds followed by the scream of 50 lb spectra racing thru the guides. The fish took me around the boat three times. As I was the only one hooked up I had Gordon on one side and Timmy on the other coaching me and directing traffic. After my fist lap everyone was soaking a bait. I brought the fish to gaff after about 35 minutes. When I heard the "whump" of this thing hitting the deck I knew I had a good fish. Mike took one look and said that one will go about 90. It was 88 back at the dock on the certified scale and good for second place in the Jackpot. The only tuna of the day. It's amazing how one good fish will change the mood of the whole boat. Nothing like being the one to give the skunk the boot ! Suddenly I look like I know what I'm doing and it is always much better to be lucky than good !
The second day was travel with one stop for some wide open Dorado fishing. They hit every thing in the water for about an hour. It was a complete charley foxtrot with 12 foot seas rocking the boat from gunnel to gunnel and 20 people hooked up at the same time. It was absolute pandemonium and more fun than I can express with words. Later, Mahi Burgers were served for lunch as we continued our way to Alijos.
Our first Day at the rocks was very good fishing for Wahoo and 50 to 90 lb Tuna. I put my first and second Wahoo in the boat. One 25 and one 45 lbs on bait with 40 lb wire and 30 lb line. I also tagged 5 nice Tuna from 50 to 78 lbs. on 40 lb test. Gordon gaffed all 5 for me including the 78 lb fish at the Bow that he pulled over the rail without any help. I think we put about 70 big fish on the boat that day.
The next two days was a slow but steady pic of big Tuna and Wahoo with some yellows and Dorado mixed in. Lots of tuna on the kite with several over 100lbs. Carl Moore caught the Jackpot winner here which was 124 lbs. One monster yellow tail was 52 lb.. What an impressive fish.
We left the Rocks with many large Tuna and Wahoo, near limits of Dorado, and 40 or 50 Yellow tail. This is a very happy boat as we worked our way back home.
The next few days were spent heading back and looking for Yellowtail. We picked up a few fish here and there but it was pretty slow. One stop I switched from my yo-yo rig to my Avet SX 25 lb rig and had a blast with 2-3 lb Calicos and Barred Sand Bass. All were released in good shape. They would have made a great stringer of fish .
A few things about fishing on the Vagabond I will always remember.
1 The food is fantastic on this boat.
2 The hard working crew is top notch and all love to fish as much as we do.
3 I never ever smelled diesel even when running in a following sea with 25 knts of wind at our back. These engines burned cleaner than you can imagine and always purred like big happy kittens. Way to go Gordo !
4 Mike is a great Captain who will make you a better fisherman.
5 I was planning my next trip on the Vag half way thru this one!

Try this. http://maptech.com

If you click on online maps and then Maptech server it will take you to where you can type in the area you want. Type in Santa Rosa Island. Then you can switch to a nautical chart zoom in and out and move the cursor around. Its even gives you lat/longs. Play wiht it for awhile. Pretty fun.

This is probably a dumb question, but that hasn't stopped me in the past. Can't a guy buy software that has nautical charts on it so he can plan trips to say the Channel Islands, or Monterey? And become somewhat familiar with areas before actually taking the trip? I have always wanted to go to the islands, but I know nothing about them. Can you hire someone to take with you on your 1st run? And thanks Gary for the input on electronics, I am aware of that site.

Yes it is open. Right now it’s open to 180' and then November 1 it goes back to 360' until December 31. Great fishing can be had at Rosa and Miguel. If you scroll down you can read MyThreeSons posts for info. Also there are some MPA( Marine Protected Area’s) around the islands so buy a map. Two lings at 24” per angler and 1 salmon grouper I believe 12” minimum per angler. I could be wrong on that one so double check.

Good luck and have fun!

So is the Rockfishing season still open down in Santa Barbara? If so, what is the timeframe in which it stays open? Any info would help. Halibut out of Avila are MIA. Pretty Borring up here right now... At least we get to shoot some quail soon.

I was looking at the tempbreaks.com
and saw nothing but COLD water, did you see something different?
On another subject JR and I were talking the other day when we went by the empty store by home depot in atascadero , we were thinking BOATERS WORLD needs to open a store in the area , what a prime location .
Wonder what they get for a franchise?

Let me know if anyone is thinking about taking a look offshore and hunting for tuna next week. UCAR's long-range surface wind models are advertising virtually slack winds over much of Central and SoCa Tuesday to Friday of next week. That's on the backside of a low pressure trough moving through Morro late Sat into Sun that will increase onshore flow and bring a slight chance for rain.

PER NWS DISCUSSION TEAM...WEAK SANTA ANA WIND EVENT UNDERWAY AS SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS OVER UTAH TONIGHT...AND MOVES TO THE FOUR CORNERS REGION THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. THE MARINE LAYER EXPECTED TO SHRINK BELOW 1000 FEET BY THURSDAY MORNING...AND BELOW 500 FEET BY FRIDAY MORNING. WIND GUSTS TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE WIND PRONE AREAS...MAINLY LATE EVENING AND MORNING HOURS. RELATIVE HUMIDITY DROPPING INTO SINGLE DIGITS DURING THE AFTERNOONS. TIMING OF GUSTY WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY OUT OF PHASE SO DURATIONS WILL NOT BE MET FOR RED FLAG CRITERIA. HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE ALOFT WILL BREAK DOWN FRIDAY AFTERNOON AS A STRONG COLD FRONT APPROACHES THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST. THIS FRONT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE SOUTHEAST THROUGH CALIFORNIA SATURDAY AND DEVELOP A CLOSED LOW BY SATURDAY NIGHT. AIR MASS WILL BECOME WET ENOUGH TO SUPPORT PRECIPITATION...WITH SNOW ABOVE 7000 FEET. STILL UNCERTAIN ON MOVEMENT OF THE LOW AFTER IT FORMS...BUT CLIMATOLOGY OF CUT OFF LOWS WOULD SUPPORT A SLOW SOUTHWESTWARD MOVEMENT. ANY OFFSHORE FLOW THAT RESULTS EARLY NEXT WEEK WOULD NOT BE STRONG ENOUGH TO SCOUR OUT THE COOL MOIST AIR MASS.

Sissy, Fishreports.net just recently hooked up with Boaters World and we are in the process of adding links for the 30,000 products they handle. There are about 10% of their products linked so far including electronics. If you purchase something from clicking Fishing tackle on my home page you pay no sales tax and no shipping if the purchase is over $100. They in turn give Fishreports a small commission to help offset the cost of providing this site. I would appreciate all the support I can get as I've run this site for ten years as a public service.

We went to the Long Beach boat show to try to see some new electronics and maybe some new equipment. We were very disappointed. Mostly ski-boat stuff. Allot of things like lots in Arizona for sale. Worst boat show that I have ever been to. Allot of the exibitors called in sick, because of fuel prices. So, those of you that didn't go, you missed nothing.

The Great State of Arnold?? Very Funny! Thanks Blackie! It reminded me of a very funny website that has an amusing animation film called Ahnold for governor ( I think ) Google jibjab.com and click on the pic. Thanks also to Dave Pratt, the descripions of San Miguel brought gack fond memories of outrageous scuba fishing I've done there (over 10 years ago) and the wet hard ride home! We kept our wetsuits on! Good Luck to all! Mike Green

Blackie, since you asked...here is a bit of info that will enable you to extend your rockfish season and alleviate your boredom!
Santa Barbara is my home port, so most of my launching is from there. Decent ramp, usually plenty of parking, two courtesy docks are helpful. Not sure of the cost as I have a sticker on my truck's windshield, but I think without a sticker the parking/launching fee is about 15 bucks. Technically you can leave your rig in the lot up to 72 hours...then it's ticket-time and the Harbor Patrol doesn't forget! Also it is "illegal" to camp in your rig overnight...but people do it all the time. There is a washdown...50 cents for 5 minutes. Weekends can be zoos. Some good bars and restaraunts within walking distance. If you get a guest slip you get showers and the nice option to hang out and have a great SB vacation. My 25' Farallon is about 15 bucks a night in a guest slip.
By far the best rockfishing is out at the islands. There is good coastal rockfishing, but the spots are fewer and smaller and most are deeper than 180', so they're off limits for the time being.
So, for quality and quantity, your best bet is to run to either Santa Rosa or San Miguel. Now....you're probably used to snotty weather since you're from Morro...but the weather out at these two westernmost islands can be horrific. Especially Miguel! They are relatively long boat rides and far from help should you need it. Forecasts of 10 to 15kts, when they are accurate, are the outer limits for me on a Miguel run. If there is a likelihood of wind over 15 I ain't going to Miguel...it's always worse out there. Rosa can be better, but it's still bad often. Miguel just seems to focus wind and swell energy!
Both islands have awesome rockfishing...it's just a matter of metering around in the open areas for structure. Parts of Miguel are loaded with reds over 8lbs...and your ratio of legal lings to shorts is the best out there than anywhere.
My favorite rig for rockies out there...and you usually never have to fish deeper than 180 (I've caught huge reds in 75 often)...is 50lb spectra, a couple feet of 25lb mono as a topshot...and an 8 oz old school scampi in motor oil or root beer. Squid tipped sometimes. The biggest lings out there go for mackeral or sand dabs.
Anything else? Just ask!

For what it's worth.....I know I am not alone in hoping for at least one more shot at the LFT's. I've topped off my boat with 130 gallons of fuel ready to burn. I will continue to watch these posts, and look forward to running out with others should the opportunity arise. Schedule flexible.
