Blackie, I fished the West End of Santa cruz for huge coppers and a mix of reds in 170ft a year ago...also caught a 28in halibut..go figure that, so you don't have to go to the upper Islands but if you can make it, then I would go up as far as the weather lets you!!!

CCSE Dinner conflicts with Ducks Unlimited dinner in Paso Robles Friday night (11/4/05). It may be better for CCSE to have dinners nearer the Salmon Opener in the spring to help boost attendance.

Blackie, Sissy, et al...
Just returned yesterday from the campground at Morro...4 nights there and the last night at North Beach campground at Pismo. Took all of our 6th through 9th graders...mountain biking, kayaking, etc. Sure was beautiful...and I got to stop in at Virg's and throw some coin their way.
Anyway, Blackie...Tim is right...if you want the best in shallow water rockfishing at the islands you must head west...at least to Rosa and definitely to Miguel. Tim has spent time on my boat out there, and we've fished our boats side by side and have done well...so, he's spot on when he says the Gap is a "sometimes" spot. That place is close-in to the Ventura/Channel Islands/Hueneme sporties and private boat fleet...it gets hammered. Lots of stones and hard bottom in there but it gets hammered...lots of pressure. Not much in the way of quality any more.
Weather and distance keeps the western reaches of the islands less crowded...and the fishing shows it. It's not like up giving up any secrets here...the outer islands are well known as a SWF hot spot...but you still have to do your work. Help is a long way off!
I would love to buddy out there with you...we launch from SB. Miguel has one of the best overnight anchorages of all the islands at Cuyler's Harbor...then around the backside at Tyler Bight is pretty good, too. Plenty of good anchorages at Rosa...with Bechers being one of my favorites.
Also...NEVER count on getting live bait at SB...if you MUST fish with live stuff bring your sabiki rigs and cat food...and if you want the bigger Miguel lings...sand dabs.

Blackie,
I have been following your trip to the islands. Something I have always wanted to do. Great to hear that you went. A friend of mine has been many times and says I need to get my feet wet and go. I have a Navionics card for that area that came with my boat. I plug it in and just play. It would be nice to have company when going over to the islands. I am equipped to spend a night or two. I usually do spend the night in the MB harbour when it is a busy ramp day. To get a jump out the gate. I fished Leffingwell for 32 years before getting this boat. I have a Gregor 13'-4" that I just drug over the sand on the way down, and pulled up with a snatch block and the truck on the way out. I bought the Gregor new for $399 in '74. Just for Leffingwell. It's nice now to have a boat that has a steering wheel and a starter. And the motor goes up and down with a button. And I can actually stand up in it. (Seaswirl 2600) Keep posting, old guys like me love to read them.

John

Central Coast Salmon Enhancement, your friends, people who are doing somethong to enhance your fishing experience are having a fundraising dinner (reads:Party!) "A Taste of Salmon" next friday night. You all are invited (wow, that is scary) to attend and have a blast with us. There will be five seafood restaurants preparing their best salmon dishes, unlimited wine and beer (That got youe attention?), an auction of great stuff and a lot of fishing stories. All this will happen at the Grover Beach Community Center at 1230 Trouville Ave at 6:30 PM Friday, November 4.

Call Sarah at CCSE for tickets or info: 473-8221. Email me if you can donate anything "fishy" for the auction. I look forward to seeing you there. Thanks.. Will

Dave,
I've tried using wheels at leffingwale and didn't have much luck. I prefer to place 6" pipe under the boat and roll the boat to the water, and use the pulley ring attached to the curb for retrieving the boat with the truck.

Mike, I definately have more time on my hands. You can keep two limits of lingcod on the 2-day (4 fish) through the end of november. You can keep two limits of rockfish through december. We have to fish within 120 feet depth. Shallow water can be fun with occasionally big fish, but it wont be like the deep stuff. At least you have all day to fish on the 2-day.

I called and talked with somebody within your fishing club and still can't get the information I need. (A name or company that sells the large beach launching wheels)
I'm still looking for a retailer or someone who knows where I can purchase the large orange surf (beach) launching wheels you guys use on your club boats

Michelle thanks. I tried calling on 19 and 68 about 5 miles off the rock but no comeback. Also tried 19 while cruising past Fiesta about 3:30. Have a new DSC radio that has lots of new features I dont understand yet. Am going to try again today outa PSL, just testing different props (and radio). Boat came with 4blade that creates tremendous torque at steering wheel. Thanks for reminder about logs in water--Once I saw what looked like a twig on top that was an entire tree underneath.

Anyone else have a newer VHF with DSC, helpful tips? I know I need to RTFM but thought it would work like regular VHF for the most part. Mine is a Raymarine Brand--good/bad? Was happy with Standard Horizon on other boat, works great. Ray

And the tally is.....

No Tuna. Sorry!

And, it was Not Nice today.

Blue water at 30, went to 40--no life except a few bait balls and birds. Lots of sign at 20 but dirty green cold water.

Did anyone at all hear me asking for radio check?

Tired--good night. Ray/Joy Lyn

Thanks for tempbreak info, and kind words Roger. We are going for a boat ride tomorrow if nothing else. Will try to get a report on the board ASAP. Havent launched out of MB in a while--refresher on where Billy Boy is located? Do you think I should call tonight or will someone be there tomorrow?

And you can call me Ray :-) Mr. Cloud makes my bones ache, and they are in bad enough condition already!!! <grin>

Matt at the Billy Boy baited up one boat for albacore today and tried calling for the results but there was no answer. Matt has good bait, the weather is flat tomorrow and there is a well defined temp break of 60 degrees at 31 mi on a 230 heading from Morro Bay. As soon as someone hears something it will get posted. I'll go if we get good news and maybe even if we don't.

Walt, Matt and I plan on going out looking soon on the Fiesta. With fuel prices high we're trying to pick the right moment. We might only get one shot at a "crew trip". Hopefully someone will have some luck in the meantime, otherwise we'll let you know what happens. Maybe next week sometime.

Making a run Saturday regardless of fri count. Need to get 20 hours on new engine. Hoping a spirit of cooperation exists for finding the fish, vital in a skinny season.

Been out of action for about a year, was dismayed to see the decommission of the PSL weather buoy, and changes at Navy SST. Can anyone point me to the best SST link for public access? Seems the consensus is 35 miles for a temp break. Looking forward to any updated info, please post if available.

Boat name Joy Lyn, Robalo 225 WAC. On 68--need to test new radio so do give a call. Goodluck to all. Thanks Bob for allowing "for sale" post of old boat (she sold). Cloud out.

Fished the Islands this weekend for rockfish between Anacapa and Santa Cruz. There was a serious current that took us away from any structure very quickly. We ended the day with one legal ling and some misc. RF. It was our first trip to the islands and we wanted to stay close since a big swell was comming on Sunday. I think next time we will try the outer islands near San Miguel, I have heard it is better out there. We were suprised that fish cleaning is not allowed at the Ventura Launch. Is it this way at Santa Barbara also? Heard a few boats on the radio fishing for flatties who only caught a few Leopard Sharks. Maybe the late season tuna will show. Matt

Hey John. on a better note, Thanks for posting the information about the dungeoness crab season. Do you have any reccomendations on what to use to get them? I have only done some crabbing off the pier, although now with a boat we should be able to get into them thick eh?

Cycles. We're in a bad one but it will get better and those big albies will return to town. Just give it some time. The turmoil on this board is getting worse but is nothing compared to the Private Boater's Forum on Allcoast. That place has turned into a gun-slinging shooting gallery with people running rampant. Might be wise to see that it does not happen here.

hi, my name is anonymous and i'm new around here. i like to talk to people on the internet because i can say whatever i want, and they can't find me. i also love to hold grudges for a very long time, even after everyone has kissed and made up. also, i am a horrible fisherman. i tend to get very grumpy when the state bans fishing. if you want to get a hold of me, just look up my name in the phone book, or call my brother staff, he works at the harbor patrol and has all the good parking spots everywhere.

from the looks of things, the DFG should see this websight and get a feel for what closing the rockfish does to the locals around here. Maybe if we organize a fishing fight night at Harry's they would see what a mess it causes and give us all free rockfish day. I call out Gilly for the first Bout.

Hey Fishmstr Steve! Sorry of the 'no-show' out in the deeper waters. Was going to ask you how it has been but hey, guess you answered it pretty good Steve. Thanks. Think I will stick to 'freshy' water for a while. Bite was good at Cachuma Saturday with some VERY decent 'bows' in the bag..

Oh by the way guys. Sounded like there was a ill-feeling going around. Come on/ Kiss and make up it's just a good board to visit and we sure don't want any bad feelings about. Cheer up guys. Rockies will be back soon and the tension will subside. Happy Trolling

michele,
of course i didn't tell anyone to f off.. what i did say was that i talked with frontier control last night and they know i'm here and that zones 1,2,&3 are open... all i got in return was an "okay"... call your deck light whatever you want, i call it pretty bright at 4am after getting rousted out of my bunk...joe said you guys tried to call me 4 times on 16... my radio was on 16 and the volume was up... later that day i noticed your transmissions to frontier were extreemly weak and almost inaudible, in fact once frontier told you this the transmissions became crystal clear... is it possible you guys were trying to hail me with a bum radio?

no, i wasn't mad at the time... more concerned... you know the drill, getting woken up like that at sea usually means bad things are happening ....anyway, i'm over it.... and gee, thanks for letting me slide.. that makes my day :-)

John(Taurus) I was on the Admiral that day. First of all, the Admiral doesn't have a floodlight anymore. Hasn't for years. Secondly, you didn't tell the deckhand what you claim, in fact you didn't seem mad at all at the time. How can you call us rude while posting all that rotten language? Grow up. We were just doing what we were told. For future reference, maybe it's not very smart to mention anything about shooting someone who is under contract with the Air Force. I can't speak for Sam, he's out of town, but I'll let it slide this time. Good luck fishing! Michele Leary

to john costello,
why do you have to lie you little punk. you said nothing of the sort to me and we tried to call you on the radio four times on 16. Approaching you for no reason in the middle of the morning? we were on gaurd patrol and requested to do so by fronteir control. You didnt even seem mad but you kind of frightend me when you asked if you could come on up and makeout. yeah that was an awkward moment.see how easy it is to make stuff up. you should stick to the truth buddy. if you wanna shoot me give it your best shot, probably a bad idea though you son of a bathroom attendant. By the way, do you think your the only one who works long days. I dont think so cupcake. If your really that mad then come on over fozzy bear.

john, you have it all wrong...i talked with frontier via landline days before the launch...even talked with them tuesday afternoon...zones 1,2&3 were open....it was clearly broadcast on ch 16... the chopper had no idea what safety zones were open, he said so...i'm not sure who got the harbor patrol involved, but i had to relay the landline number of frontier control to them ...it was typical military mentality that day, the left hand hasn't a clue what the right hand is doing

Joe, the Admiral was under contract to the Air Force during the last missile launch. Sam was running the boat that day and was told by FRONTIER CONTROL to have you leave the area they later decided to let you stay. The helicopter, and the SLO HARBOR PATROL also asked you to leave. Its a good thing you didn't tell them to f--- off.

Fished PSL in the skiff today. Made some big smelt for bait and drifted around the Pea Patch for 3 hours for nada...then bounce balled in deeper water for a few rockfish...no halibut. Ohwell...was hoping some hogs were around...guess they are gone until next season. Anyone else give them a try lately?
lat,
