This is starting to sound like a building code seminar. Maybe I can use this site for my continuing education credits. How many for the last class? Actually I think it is cool since we can't talk about fish these days. Will |

Guy's I wanted to thank everyone for your input regarding my situation. I've gotten a lot of good advice, don't know how far it's going get me fighting the man! but it's good advice. I also want to thank everyone for not flamming me for posting a non fishing topic. This is the end of this topic, let's get back to fish talk. Thanks, Carl |

Keith, G.O.95 section 54.8 (B) Does differ from the NEC and CEC. But if you read over residential property it would still be a minimum of 10' with the exception. I would also check the length of span- a maximum of 150' span from pole to service drop. Again, I would contact the city or county and file a complaint with the building dept. "B Clearances above Ground, Buildings, Etc. The vertical clearances of supply service drops above ground, buildings, etc., shall be not less than the minimum clearances specified in Rule 37, Table 1, Column B, with the following modifications: (1) Above Public Thoroughfares: Service drop conductors shall have a vertical clearance of not less than 18 feet above public thoroughfares, except that this clearance may grade from 18 feet at a position not more than 12 feet horizontally from the curb line to a clearance of not less than 16 feet at the curb line, provided the clearance at the centerline of any public thoroughfare shall in no case be less than 18 feet. Where there are no curbs the foregoing provisions shall apply using the outer limits of possible vehicular movement in lieu of a curb line. (2) Above Private Thoroughfares and Other Private Property: (a) Industrial or Commercial Premises: Over private driveways, lanes, or other private property areas accessible to vehicles on premises used for industrial or commercial purposes, service drops shall have a vertical clearance of not less than 16 feet. (b) Residential Premises: Over private driveways or lanes or other private property areas accessible to vehicles on premise used for residential purposes only, service drops shall have a vertical clearance not less than 12 feet. EXCEPTION: This clearance may be reduced for insulated services that conform with rule 20.8-G to not less than 10 feet. Note: Revised January 21, 1992 by Resolution SU-10. (3) Above Ground in Areas Accessible to Pedestrians Only: Over areas accessible to pedestrians only service drops shall be maintained at a vertical clearance of not less than 12 feet. EXCEPTION: This clearance may be reduced for insulated services that conform with rule 20.8-G, to not less than 8 feet 6 inches. Note: Revised January 21, 1992 by Resolution SU-10." |

Carl, "Does the following mean at any one point over my backyard/resident? Section 225-18 Clearance from Ground gives the minimum vertical clearance for conductors. Clearance over residential property is 12' minimum (15' if over 300 volts)." MINIMUM clearance over residential property is 12'. If it passes over your house, it has to be no less then 8' above the roof. Roger |

Deke has not been open since the rockfish closure. He said that he would open up if the tuna came in, but otherwise he said that he is done for the season (and maybe next). It still blows me away that we are the only place along the california coast that can't fish for rockfish!!! Crazy politics!!! |

Went out and drowned lots of chovies today looking for butts - all for nada. Weather was great - in fact we could have used a little wind to improve the drift. Think we might try again tomorrow - first time I've been out on my boat for a couple of months - it was great! Bill |

Utilities in CA. use State General Orders. Utilities are Exempt from NEC & CA. elec. code. G.O. 95 is for overhead lines & G.O. 128 for underground. Min clearance 0-750 volt service drop above ground accessible to pedestrians only is 12' but can be reduced to 8'-6" when the service wire is insulated. Rule # 54.8-B3 Hope it helps. |

Dave Pratt, I surf fish quit a bit at Montana De Oro, and I have to agree with your sentiment about clueless people. More than once I've been alarmed about small children running loose during BIG surf. Thank God I've never seen one get washed out, but I'll bet it's not a matter of "If" but when, also the horse people seem to think ol' sparkplug can swim the rapids. I've witnessed several washouts with panicking horses and very wet people (sometimes very funny) Can I get invited to a surf perch competition? I love margaritas! Mike Green |

Here is a second hand report for my brother's and my boat on Margarita lake last Sunday: (I just got back from a vacation in Oregon where we made an attempt to go crabbing at Walport but nearly got blown off the road in a Volvo- Horrible weather-Then spent a day in Gold Beach where it was calm and flat, but I had no gear or boat!) Caught one keeper trout, trolling near dam with spinner- 5 smalll LM bass on troll- one 2 lb LM bass on a crappie jig Can anyone give us a few tips on crabbing out of MB? Where can we get the best deal on hoops or traps? Thanks in advance, Mike Green |

Carl, Dave- It doesn't make any difference who the electrical supplier is, they are still under the California Electrical Code. Section 225-18 Clearance from Ground gives the minimum vertical clearance for conductors. Clearance over residential property is 12' minimum (15' if over 300 volts). Over a street or commercial drive with truck traffic the minimum is 18'. Section 225-19 Clearance over buildings, vertical clearance is 8' minimum- to be maintained not less than 3' in all directions from edge of roof. If the lines do not meet these criteria notify the utility and the city/county. Roger |

Carl...we down here in Santa Barbara have SoCal Edison...so I don't know if this will work for PG&E. I too have low lines from the telephone pole across my backyard and to my house. SoCal Edison says my only choice to not having them would be to put them underground, at my cost. I would have to trench from the pole to the house and they would do the rest. Since there are two properties in your situation you'll have to get his ok as well. I am going to do the trenching eventually...but right now I'm spending too much coin on boat projects and boat toys!! Dave My Three Sons |

All, I know this is not fishing related but I was hoping to get some suggestion from you folks regarding a situation I have. I have a rental unit in Morro Bay. In the far corner of my backyard is a telephone pole with a power line running diagonal across my backyard to my neighbor's house. The problem is my neighbor is located on the other side of me and is at a lower elevation. I was thinking I could use the power line to hang my clothes on to dry. The line was about 8' off the ground. I called PG&E they came out and said they would raise the line. thats fine but it still does not address the fact that I have a power line running from one corner of my yard to another corner. I asked if they could run the line to mid span then drop it down. They said it was legal when it was installed and if I wanted moved it would cost me. What's up with that? Thanks, Carl |

Fished the perchies at Guadalupe Main Beach Sunday morning with Stuart (Graylight). Gorgeous day, pounding and dangerous shorebreak, couple of good holes we worked for only a couple of small barred surf perch. Maybe 20 guys fishing; ours were the only fish we saw caught. Motor oil grubs...saw plenty of sand crab sign but couldn't dig any up. Tons of water moving around made things kind of tough. Really, really beautiful morning...but one scary sight...some rather large-sized moms and two small boys (about 4 and 7) set up their blanket right on top of a very steep berm next to the shorebreak, and they were letting their kids play too close and with their backs turned to the crushers...and one rushing wave would have dragged them out and killed them...nothing the moms could have done. Stuart told the moms not to let the kids play so close...these folks were totally oblivious to the danger...and they said ok...but as we were leaving ten m inutes later themoms were yapping and the kids were back near the shorepound. Yikes...sure glad we didn't read about them in the paper this morning. Dave My Three Sons |

Marine preserves on the central coast? They are planning to run us over with even more restrictions. There is a meeting at Cambria Pines Lodge Wednesday and Thursday Nov. 9and 10, 10am-4:30 and the next day at 8am to 12:30. The regional stakeholders that represent the fishermen need our support to back up the California Fisheries Coalition Proposal. Please attend. Rick algert or Eric at the MB harbor office should be able to brief you if you are interested. |

Blackie, Harold has been after me to buy a Davis boat since they were 37k out the door. I bought a used 2000 Seaswirl 2600 with 160 hrs on it and it was loaded. The guy never put the cushions or enclosure on it. It's a gasser volvo stainless DPX injected, and is very quiet. I can afford a more expensive boat, but I have enjoyed this one very much. I just need to add autopilot. I have become familiar with the electronics and love them. Now has outriggers (for what? lft) and down riggers. Caught ten salmon this year and had a blast. Replaced the 15hp Yamaha kicker with a 8hp high thrust Yamaha with power tilt and electric start fitted with a nautamatic autopilot that even works the throttle. Mostly for salmon, but worked great for keeping me over the RF in wind and chop. Want to go to the islands. John |

Sissy and Gang, We sometimes get our best conditions for outer island excursions during the winter...between fronts! We know that we'll get the pre frontal southwesterlies, followed by the post frontal (filling wind) westerlies before and after trough passages...but often we have very nice days between fronts. That's the time to head to Miguel and Rosa. We look for the "variable to 10kts" days...then we hit it. Not uncommon to leave SB at 0600 and return by 1pm with limits of reds and lings. Right now we are entering a seriously windy stretch; this weekend looks bad...I live at the bottom of San Marcos Pass and for the last 5 hours we've been experiencing down-canyon gusts to 35kts. No doubt I'll find some of my shingles in the yard tomorrow morning! Dave My Three Sons |

Hey gang.Rumor has it that the gillnet boat "Temptation" unloaded like 105 albacore in Morro Bay.If I am not mistaken I do believe that this boat unloaded approx. 2 weeks ago.80 swordfish and a tote full of opah and some large albies mixed in was the tally of that boats trip before this one.I dont know of the location particulars but I do know from experience that these guys are within 150 and 200 miles. So to sum this all up, when the weather clears we should put our heads together to organize one last ditch effort before the towel is offically thrown and the fat chick has sung her tune.If anybody has heard of this rumor please find the location where this boat caught these fish.thanks, all for now from the Billy Boy "ghost town" Bait dock.Located in the economically dead town of Morro Bay. |

It was very windy but it didn't stop me from my quest.Ended up at 35,08'and 120,37'.I trolled arround for about 5 minutes and then I found the tuna. Albacore of the finest type, the Charlie Tuna type.Solid white.I'm going inside to make a sandwich now.Can anyone guess where I wen't? This is the only kind of action I've had for a couple of years now,and I do it quite often. LOL Hopefully soon I can really get out there! Tim |

Forget Jack. He is clueless and obviously logged on to the wrong website. His post made absolutely no sense. Don't even bother to react to him, it is not worth the time. |

Where's the web monitor when you need him ? Comments like 'JACK' post are really uncalled for. Why don't you register onto the site 'JACK' Post a real name... a real e-mail address. It's sooo much easier to 'STAY-IN-HIDING' behind fake names. I THINK YOU'RE A LITTLE PUNK ! |

Sissy, You can still have some real nice days at the islands in winter. You juts need to pick them right. This fall has been a real bummer so far. No strong Santa Ana's yet. It will happen. |

Everyone sucks! Waaa Waaaa Waaa! Geez, how old are we? Acting like 3rd-graders. You are so tough on the internet, and just drunk and stupid in the parking lot. Just zip your lips, suck it up, and get on with your bad selves. Life is complicated enough. |

Tim Mohawk, Weather is blowing here in Cayucos also. Looking forward to a trip to Miguel. How does it usually look for going in the winter? Once it boils up here, the good days are rare. I actually have to board up my windows. I lost one two years ago, didn't board up soon enough. 5x8, wave punched it right in. Usually Nov. 1, is the cut off date. Storms are eminent and unforgiving. Though I have fished in my 13' skiff on Christmas. Rare. I would post a picture of my skiff and fish, but I don't know how. John |

Nope I sure didnt. VP at my company came up to me at 3pm Monday and gave me two tickets to U2 for Tuesday night. I had a client going also. I was ready to go. Not my favorite band but work comes first. Perfect weather all day Tuesday. Looking really crappy for the next several days. |

Cloud: We can usually accommodate most comers for overnight boat tie-up. Slips, if we have an opening, start at $25.20/night. The piers that were mentioned start at $5.40/night, and are alot closer to the entrance and obviously easier on the wallet. The down side to them is that you will most likely be rafted outside of another boat, so you'll have to cross that boat and climb a ladder to get up the pier. No big deal, but some people aren't into it. There is always space at the piers. We also have an anchorage that is free for the first 5 days (just off of the Shell fuel dock), and a floating dock in the anchorage as well that is $5.40/night. Both those options put you off of the waterfront, so it's not so easy for doing the dinner thing. At any rate, you can contact us at 772-6254, or on VHF channel 12 for specifics, 6am to 6pm nowadays. Cloud, see the MB Harbour Patrol, or call. I usually tie up at the city pier(small fee), take my wife out for dinner, (if she goes), spend the night on the boat and shoot out the gate early. There are public restrooms near. There are some slips, but I am not up on them. Ask the Patrol. Not Marina Del Rey, but fun, and you avoid the drunks and croud at the ramp in the AM. John |

Fished Catalina on November 1st for 1 yellowtail (30-lbs), 1 black sea bass (est 150-lbs on 15-lb string; released with no problems), 9 halibut (3 legal) 1 small white sea bass, plus an assortment of bass, bonito, cudas, etc, Lost another 'tail due to another pb'r anchoring right next to us. Not a good thing. HEY! ******* Major cudos to Captain Allyn Watson and crew of the 6-pak charter boat "Dreamer", based in Long Beach. This operation baited us up with live squirts without even asking for bait. Now that's a rare deal in this day and age gang. It says alot about this operation and her crew. Total class-act. I hear the boat is booked most of the time but he's worth checking their schedule for openings. |

Blackie, Thanks, I'll look into the 2 sites. So far I haven't found anything that even looks close to what you guys have on the club's boats. Those orange wheels must be 10-12in wide. Dave |

Cannon uni-troll Down-riggers - for sale $300 for the pair These are the tele-scoping booms, with swivel mounts, complete with new wire. These are just like new - which sell for $259 each in the catalogs. These are set-up with the wiring for a "black box" - which is $50 extra. Call Jim Nailen 545-4049 or 235-6474 |

Looking at going out on Monday - need to get my boat in the water (with me on it)! Sounds like the albies are still in hiding - anything new? Might just end up looking for some flatties, but haven't heard of any being picked up as of late. Any current information would be appreciated. Bill |

James, You could try Giannini's on Market street. You need two four and one quarter inch escape rings within five and a half inches from the top. I would check the sport regs though before buying something. If you can't find any, e-mail me, I have the stuff to make them, you just need to get the wire. |

My Dad and I did ok here on dungeness last year. We're still learning so we didn't exactly loop 'em, but there's definately some out there to be had. 200-270 ft., try to stay deeper than the otters. Sandy areas, but near rocks. We take squid, winter time here there is usually plenty of mackerel to be had on Sabiki rigs around 240 ft. (I think it's legal to use for bait) We didn't get limits, but we got enough to make me sick of it for awhile. We'll probably be out there Sunday on ch. 68. Good luck. |

For U Freshy's that are still waiting for the 'Rock' season to bust again, and are hitting the lakes. Sunday - Cachuma Report Pretty flat with slow action on Bass in the AM, a few dinks but nothing to write home about. Trout was slow pickins as well -- Must be the weather change. Last Saturday was great with 5 VERY nice bow keepers to brag about. Most everyone on the banks seemed to be hookin sizable bows. Cheers! |

Hey Stacey, How goes it ? I wouldn't want the wheels for Luffingwwell. But to use at Carpinteria and sometimes @ Gaviota where it's a longer distance to the water. Dave |

38nm will get you to the Miguel Passage Blackie. Then from there you work up the back side and head up the islands and meter. The best fishing is the upper west end outside. You need to watch the weather though. This is by far the most dangerous side of the island. Lots of foul area and swells can jack up out of nowhere. Rosa is closer. You can fish outside of the closure at Carrington Point and all up and down the front side. If you go around the backside the fishing is excellent but it’s deep. The flats produce huge reds and so does South Point. There is another closure at South Point so you need to pay attention. It’s about 250-280' back there. Too deep for me but my old man loves it so we go back there once and awhile. I launch from SB and Dave is right if you want live then go out of Ventura or make bait. |

DAVE AND SISSY; Dave how much of a run is it to the far islands where the fishing is GOOD? Sissy; We also have a 2106 striper seaswirl with the diesel package, alaskan package, furno nav net system with all the bells and whistle ,auto pilot. We really like the boat just not fast enough, but theres not to many days you can run that fast here anyway, we have had two Whalers and a Radon, so we have tried some good boats , and they all have things you like and dislike. OK maybe we can get together and make a trip in the future , holidays coming up and I will be busy ,and thinking of going back to work after the 1st of the year for a couple of months. Im glad we have this web site to share information, and there are a great bunch of folks on here. Tight lines Blackie/Sr |
