Great Miguel trip! I was looking at the Channel all day and wondered what the hell I was doing at work. Which is, by the way, way over rated. And the tuna trip on the RP...holy smokes! Dave My Three Sons |

We fished San Miguel Island today. Good quality reds, wide open lings. WE caught and released 20 plus legal lings to 36 inches. A bonus was 2 sheepshead 12 and 15 lb. Very calm waters today. |

Hola, I am planning an 8 to 12 week trip to Alaska next year. Plan to leave mid May and pull our 25' 5th wheel along with a Gregor 13 1/2' cartopped boat. I have an older copy of the "Milepost", but was wondering if anybody had any info on places to fish along the way, either fresh or saltwater. Any/all info is appreciated. I can be emailed at: boe4fun@msn.com Pura Vida, Paul Boe |

Wes, it can get going earlier; those months have just been the most productive lately. Again, squid is key...but it's not JUST squid...there was a bunch of squid a few weeks ago on the front side of Cruz...for a while...but not many sport caught seabass. Some good flatties, though. As far as the Safety Meeting...this one was a goodie...open invitation is always there for all! Dave My Three Sons |

Hey, Wes, be patient! Historically the WSB staart to chew in the spring, with April/May/early June being the top times. Really, it's mostly dependent on squid...but even then it's no guarantee. However...you can get a seabass any month during the winter, but it's tough to find a stupid wide bite. The guys who get them this time of year put in many many hours. Most guys are really tight lipped...but the traditional hot spot has been the east side of Rosa. That's certainly no secret. Dave My Three sons Farallon 25 |

I'm having a hard time accepting that the longfin season is over. I'm still looking at the charts almost daily and the water outside the 1908 is calling. Seems like we've had some reports of commercials picking up fish way outside. I've got the range... am I crazy for even thinking about running if we get a weather window? I saved big $ by not chartering a boat on Oahu last week (can't see paying $600 to not keep what I catch!), may as well spend it on gas... Anyone else who can't let go? Greetings, I'll be heading to Baja in about two weeks (Dec. 16th) for about a month. Just curious if anyone else in these parts will also be heading down. It would be fun to hook up down there. I'll be camping/fishing between San Lucas Cove and Mag Bay. Email me if are interested in some info on Baja, this is about my 15th trip in the last 10 years. Best fishes, steve |

Joe Anderton, I would like to take a moment to thank you for your help this last salmon season. Although I have spent most of my life launching throught the surf, and have caught my share of rock fish, I didn't know diddly about salmon fishing when I got a boat capable. You made a salmon addict of me. Thanks, John |

I agree with anonymous, things aren’t cool around here. We went up to the Sacramento River last week, near Anderson Ca. A two day charter with The River Pirate Charter Service, We had a great time, with not many fish; my understanding is that it’s pretty close to the end of the season. Back to anonymous, we took the long way up to Anderson. We (my wife Norma and I) went up Hwy. 101 to Shelter Cove, then Eureka to Redding. At Shelter Cove the only thing going was bottom fishing, some lings, and Rock cod, Snapper. These guys had no clue about closures, and all the other crap that goes along with it. I think the Feds and Arnie are picking on the Central Coast. I don’t know what todo, we have a super group of guys representing us, I just don’t understand it, and the weather controls us more than anything. Frustrated fisherman………………………Jim Chandler |

The way things appear to be going we can all make key chains out of our reels... all that weight will be hard on lock cylinders and might be hard to carry around. Just another remark from another frustrated jerk waiting for a opportunity to get a jerk back from the other end of my rod |

I think the answer to the swordfish question is that it is a long way to go to(mabey)find them;then getting them to take a hook and line, since a spear or harpoon can't be used. What is your take on this, anyone out there with some knowledge or experience? Tim |

Swordfishing????'S Well I have some general questions for the old timers on the board. I am a marlin fishing mate and have worked for the last 9 summers mating on sportfishs in the Atlantic (ST Thomas, Bahamas, etc.) (I am a CalPoly student during the off-season. As some of you may know, we also target sword fish of off Florida at night. Well my question is why aren’t anglers targeting sword fish here in Morro bay? Or has any one tried and had any success? Recent word from my commercial friends say the swords are running through right now I guess I would like to hear some history on the sword fishing in this area. I have heard rumors of an old man with a bunch of sword bills in his yard (I have driven around Morro bay looking for this mans yard many of times, LOL). I have also talked to a few commercial guys who tell me some slobs can be found at 60miles out. I have sword fished quite a few times; I am no expert and will never claim to be. But if some one wants to give it a try and is looking for a qualified mate who has spent many nights out at sea give me an email Robbie@maukafire.com So please email or post some history on the sword fishing in this area. I have purple fever preety bad and need a good fix! Alohas Robbie (thats me on the left about to go to work with a marlin in ST, Thomas)

Avet SX 5.1 reel for sale. Used for one summer in St.Thomas as a 12lb pitch for blue marlin. Still in great shape with a 1 light scratch on it. It is silver. $120 obo or trade for a good TLD 5, 10 or 15. Avet MX 6 reel for sale. Used for one summer in St. Thomas as a 20lb pitch for blue marlin. This reel caught one marlin/ the marlin did some damage, to it. Walked it off the rod seat. Locked up the drag and destroyed the clicker (clicker kicked in gear when the fish made its initial run). The reel is in great shape considering, but was not designed for the abuse we put it through. It still works and is a great real for rock cod and the like. The drag curve isn’t right for 20lb line, more like 40lb-50lb. I fixed every thing on the real but the clicker. Silver, $120 obo or trade for a good TLD 5, 10 or 15. Mercury 800 80 hp outboard $100 was told it runs, probably needs to be re-oiled. 1967 glasspar and trailer, no tittle. It’s a project boat, floor partially cut up, stringers are good, and no cabin, was going to be a center console run about. $200 with a small dinky fish finder. Or boat trailer and outboard for $250.00 Email me at Robbie@maukafire.com I will exchange phone numbers through email. Thanx Robbie And thanx for the awesome board! |

I should have been a little more clear. Test light will light up when hooked accross an OPEN switch if the rest of the circut is OK, Then will go OUT when the switch is turned on If it stays on the switch is bad, If the light dose not light up initialy there is a problem "downsteam" |

Mike, (moorfish) I make my living working on ignition systems and what not, I never use a voltmeter to check power and grounds to large elctrical loads (like an ignition system) use a cheap test light! or make your own with a bulb socket and two wires. Hook between the "in and out" of the switch in question and turn it on, if the bulb lights up there is a large voltage drop there, correct it, also you can hook it up between the battery ground post and the engine block, if you have a bad ground the light will light up,When you turn it on Not Cranking dont disconnect the battery for this test. Here is my poor fish report for today: Fished Montana De Oro in light rain for two hours, Thought I'd try something that I heard about up in Oregon, Boiled sandcrabs, Yep, took a small can of sterno and a empty cat food can lit the sterno in a smalll hole and boiled a few sandcrabs in seawater It works, the crabs turned bright red, I hooked them on the usual rig and caught two small fish right away, I had tried the motor oil grubs first for nada and I tried the grubs later for nada Mike Green |

Mike: Yes, breaker switches or circuit breakers do go bad without any outward signs that something is wrong internally. Without being hands-on your boat, I couldn't begin to troubleshoot what you are talking about, but it sounds like you have done quite a bit of good Sherlock Holmes work already. The simple way to test the breaker is to bypass it with one lead on a jumper cable or something. You might show 12 volts on the "downstream" side of the breaker with a voltmeter, but that doesn't mean that the breaker is allowing any amps through. It doesn't take very much to pass 12 volts through and "fake" a good connection, if you know what I mean. Another thing I would do is study your wiring diagram for the boat and engine, if you have one. Start at the batteries and volt/ohm test every connnection that you can trace downstream to the problem. Finally, check all your grounds, both battery and engine sides. I don't know how many problems I've fixed on boats and vehicles by fixing a crappy grounding system. Usually it's the main ground wire from the batteries to the block. Some things that have their own grounds elsewhere may still work despite a bad main ground, which might lead you astray. Good luck. Eric Endersby |

Not a report but thought I'd toss a question I have related to my Ignition. Ignition is dead but "everthing else" not related to igition switch or VP gauges is up and running. I did discover that my alternator is gone/ putting out zero volts. Placed all 4 batteries on remote charger and all are holding 12.5 volts at rest and cables look good. I have good power to both the starter and battery switch. Further checks reveal the main wiring harness and plug located inside electrical box atop of engine is Unfrayed with no obvious corrosion points. Breaker switch does not appear tripped and button moves freely in and out. Do those things go bad? I exposed backside of ignition plug and tested all 6 pins with voltmeter = no power so ignition switch appears fine. Also, Tilt-trim fuse on starter is good via Ohm test, and no obvious wire problems elsewhere. Tilt/trim gauge on bridge is also dead as is power to the tilt motor relays. No blown fuses. * Is there another breaker or fuse located under the dash close to ignition switch? I do see a small grey box but it looks unrelated to main Ignition harness. I have one of those older/rebuilt 41A's with a 290DP. Ideas and input greatly appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving moorefish has attached this image: __________________ |

Albacore at 110 miles off of Point Conception, no numbers for you guys but I watched as a ton of 35-45lb albies were unloaded in Santa barbara along with some swords. The boat had some jig lines out and busted a few off on these fat albies...too bad the weather sucks now. |

SaltyDoc, Thanks for the report on the crabbing. I have traps but I cannot find in the DFG regs how many I can set above Pt. Conception. Below, it states 5 per person and 10 per boat, but I can't determine what the limit is up here. Haven't made it over to talk to DFG about it yet. Can anyone help me out here? Also, Dave Pratt, I was just curious about the Rock Harbor... What kind of speed are you making at what rpms, and how much fuel do you burn running like that? Oh, and I guess I should also ask which engine? Appreciate your input. I know it's not salty, but I went up to Santa Margarita on Thursday.... caught 7 bass on the flyrod to 2 1/2 pounds. Not large fish by any means, but very fun on a 4/5 weight rod. I think if i had used a 7 weight and much bigger flies I would have hit bigger fish... they are definitely present. Happy Thanksgiving to ALL, Paul F/V Flyer |

Looks like our Indian Summer is about to end. The wind has already started back up at conception and Saturday's forecast is ugly ! Swell is coming up also.Chris, Sunday forecast is a little better but the residual from saturday would most likely make it miserable. We went to Santa Rosa Island yesterday for limits of bugs and noticed the wind picking up on our way back across the channel. |

You guys hear about the Charger crashing and sinking last weekend at Rosa? Ran into the rocks at beachers, 15 people on board, all in the water, all OK. |

Fished yesterday at 1st street in CAYUCOS , got there to late like you des and did not get a hit, grabed some mussels off the rocks and went to the launch ramp at MORRO caught four nice fish before i ran out of bait, There is a new set up for the perch , I have heard havent tried it yet but will . Buy some red GULP sand worms cut them in 1 1/2 inch lengths put them on a #2 red hook and fish the same rig as the grub, they are said to be a hot setup, I think the only place that has the worms is the TACKLE WHAREHOUSE , I know WALLY WORLD does not have them. The water was clean yesterday no salad at all. Good luck. Blackie/Sr |

Billy, Lover's Point is the first area you can fish outside of the sanctuary. Just launch and head S. I was in a 15' skiff, so I didn't want to go further, but everyone I talked to said to head even further S for better fishing. I fished hard all day for lings and only managed 1 keeper, so I think it is fairly picked over. Wide open blues though! good luck and post a report. best fishes, steve |

Thank you anon. Yep, thats what it was, a kelp greenling, I've done a lot of tropical diving and those fish got nothin on this one. Chief, I surffish a bit at Montana de Oro, The best time is on the incomming tide, when they are biting they will hit almost any color plastic twirlytail jig, I use a 3/4 oz egg shaped sinker above a swivel then a three foot leader a single hook and the jig, Up in Oregon at the mouth of the Rogue, I've had great success with a critter they call mud crabs, they look like mini lobsters, I wonder if we have them here too? |

Bob, I recently set five crab traps out in 200 ft of water almost due west of the rock where I did good last March. I let them soak for 4 days for no crabs. I moved them south in 225 ft of water near pt. Sal. I plan on checking them Wed. I'll let you know how I do. I have seen commercial traps here before. I am kind of new to this on the central coast. I wonder if some of the locals like John Costello could enlighten us. |

Does anyone know if there are crabs in front of Morro Bay and if so how deep should the pots be set? Will I would like to see someone try for albies one more time this year. I did a run in Oct of 70 miles, Steve Moore trolled all the way down from San Francisco and Ray Cloud tried a couple of weeks ago all for nothing. Its someone elses turn to burn fuel. Took troop of boy Scout to Montana De Oro for over nighter Friday night. believe every coyote in the State came camping too. Glad their songs are only 3 minutes long at a shot. The boys had a great time! I'm old retired Navy chief and when stationed at Whidbey island we used Cheap small cans of cat food wired to the crab trap and it worked to perfection just punch a few holes in 1/2" wide and the scent will bring the crabs in from afar. Although i did not bring my fishing rig i was disapointed not to see anybody out surf fishing Saturday morning or during the day. I wanted to get an educatioon on how it is done and show the boys. What locations are fished in the park if anyone doesn't mind giving up the secrets? Chief |

Fished surf perch yesterday from 1st-8th street in Cayucos for Nada. Got to the beach a little late and caught high-tide and the outgoing. Water looked like it rolled with a ton of junk in the water. Great weather and water was greasy calm with not a single boat in site because of the closures. Be back out there again soon. D |

Bunch of us did well on the rockfish and lings today out at Miguel. The usual crew....Stuart on Graylight, the boys on Aquaholic, Jennyo and family, and I was on TJ's Rock Harbor. Started looking for quality reds in 240 and we found 'em...including goldeneye and a cow, which had to be released. Good grade of reds. Finished up the day at Bennet on the west end for more quality reds (limits for four guys on board) and six lings. The Rock Harbor with that diesel is the killer ride....and it was a classic day...flat flat flat. Dave My Three Sons |

Towed the skiff up to Monterey this weekend. Hit the Aquarium with 25 Cuesta College students on Saturday...what a blast. They've got a 400+ pound bluefin in the Outer Bay Tank!!! Looks like a VW swimming around Fished out of Monterey today. Launched near Fisherman's Wharf and headed out of the bay to Lover's Point? Fished 50-100 feet of water for wide open blues, a few yellows and 4 lings, with one keeper. Awesome day on the water...shorts and tshirts by 10 a.m. Amazing rockfish display, they were actually boiling until about 10 a.m.!!! Saw numerous fish flying out of the water chasing anchovies...thought I was in Baja for a while. It was crazy. Had my friends 11 year old son in the boat, first time rockfishing...He had a great time Probably caught 20 blues on an ultralite rod! I think he is hooked. Leaving for Baja in a month for 4 weeks...can't wait. best fishes, steve |

Steve. I usualy fish Montana de Oro, I went yesterday at about 2pm, this was not an optimal time (outgoing tide) but I had two fish, released because I thought I'd do better. Fished out of MB today, well heck! we tried crabbing, even though we don't know our butts from a hole in the ground. No luck at all, we came to the conclusion that we needed to check the nets more often, bait gone, (a dead tomcod)We trolled between nets and caught one fish I'd never seen before, It was about 12' long kinda shaped like a cross between a gopher cod and a ling cod It had BRIGHT orange spots, it was beutiful, let it go. Any body know?Mike |

Ray, the outfall is at the north parking lot at the rock. It's surronded by that chain link fence, right next to the rock. |

I went surfishing today. I was just south of the Pismo pier. I had some luck but it was slow. I was using a sliding sinker with 18" floro leader and a small punkinseed grub. I would get a bite or two, but I geuss they were just to small. It was only my second time surfishing and it was A blast. The kids had fun makinng sand castles( witch really were just mounds and wholes). The water was A little cold but wasn't A big deel. I'd like to go out again tomorrow but hope to have A little more luck. Could you guys give me some tips or areas to fish ? Thanks Steve |

Michelle, Thanks for responding. A friend and I both laughed over the "dumpster diving". Hadn't heard that term in awhile and we both had some stories to share. Of course, we all were hoping for a confermation of tuna that close to shore. Might get to trailer to Moss before their RC season closes. Good fishing everyone. |
