The Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC)is planning its annual Avila and Morro Bay fund raising dinners. Tentative dates are Feb 25 in Avila and the second Sat in April for Morro Bay. We have a lot of work cut out for us in the battle to retain our right to fish and we can use all the support we can get. We need to get the word out why we have been unjustly restricted from our traditional fishing activities. A scientific ground fish study conducted by Cal Poly using Fish & Game's own protocal indicating that the fishery is as healthy today as it was 30-25-20-10 and 5 years ago is being ignored. Well funded and organized environmental groups are largely responsible for the cutbacks in seasons and marine reserves as well as a lack of data. If there was eveidence of a decline in the local fish stocks I would be in favor of restrictions but there just isn't any. This year two of our CCFCC directors spent two days per month out of town at the MLPA stakeholders meetings plus countless other meetings and emails working on the behalf of our members and sport fishermen to minimize the impacts of the proposed marine reserves mandated this year by the MLPA. We have a lot more work to do and we are fortunate CCFCC's members and directors are willing to take their time to work on our behalf. Help me thank them at the up coming CCFCC fund raising dinners. Well Gary I'll take that kind of correction all day long, that was good news, let's hope they dont mess with the salmon opener. In fairness to this website's sponsored links, apparently Boater's World also has the GULP worms. And...DOA lures is advertising---get this--an "Electric Chicken" lure. Image coming soon says the website. Hmnnn....this I gotta see. Cabin fever is setting in. CLOUD out. |

Oh, by the way, that would mean Ocean Salmon would open Sunday, April 30th and if the regs are the same, that would be two per day at twenty inches total length PismoG |

Cloud, I just got a response from F&G about the '06 regs and they will mirror the '05 regs. Here's the reply: Dear Mr. Connell, I apologize for the delay in responding to your email. Because the Pacific Fishery Management Council is on a two year management cycle, the 2006 ocean sport fishing regulations will look just like the 2005 regulations as they appear in the regulation booklet, at least for the first few months of the year. In the Morro Bay South-Central Management Area, rockfish will be closed to boat-based anglers from January 1 through April 30, opening May 1, 2006. The fishery is open year-round to divers and shore-based anglers. The Department is proposing regulation changes that will provide more fishing opportunities as the year progresses. Check the Department's web site (www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd) and/or the Recreational Groundfish Fishing Regulations Hotline ((831)649-2801) for the latest information. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to call me at the number below. Best Regards, Ed Roberts Edgar W. FYI, I didn't get a chance to try for WSB because of the huge swell this past weekend and it looks like I won't have an opportunity until after the first of the year. I do enjoy reading the posts regarding the perch and how they are obtained though and I might try to get over to Cambria to do that. I hope everyone has a Happy Holiday and a good & safe New Year (yes, even you Anonymous). I asked Santa for some good fishing action this next year. Hope I get what I want............. |

No cloud our fishing club is not closed to women , we used to have a women president at one time . We put on one bang up fish fry in April also thats open to the public , it our yearly fund raiser , all fish are caught by our members locally. Im leaving for Reno for the Holidays, be back for the virgs DEC 30th fishing trip weather permitting Ok got to go . Blackie/SR |

BLACKIE Thanks for the PEACE OUT message Congrats on the good day--I worked. What type gear (lb test rating) do you guys use? I have the traditional 10' pole/large spinner (20lb rating) and a 12 lb rated rig. Both dusty from lack of use. Daughter's new rig is 8-12 rated w/7' pole. I usually surf fish oceano and guad beach, but heard Guad is inaccessible right now. Maybe we can HOOKUP I'll drive up that way. After Christmas sometime will need to teach daughter (24 married) how to use her new rig for surf. OR--is the Cambria surf fish club male exclusive? We arent equipped with wetsuits so will need to adjust. We usually fish from my 22' WAC but no launch lately. Itchin' to put her in the water. If swell werent so large I'd be gettin ready to go get those Seabass. Merry Christmas CLOUD out. |

Thanks for info Gulp Sand Worms, SM Wally-world doesnt have them, only redworms, crawlers and turtle-back, Maybe I can pickup in SLO on way to beach. Dont know when I can make it tho. Sure I'll take some lessons its been a long while since I've walked the beach for perch, and the technique is different from what ive used in the past (grubs). The WSB trip not looking good saw forecast 17+ ft swell (35' offshore near storm) for Wed/Thursday so have put that on back burner unless fcst improves. &^%^%$%^$^%$ I wanted to get out there! John, CharkBait.com has them ... I picked mine up at Longfin last time I was down in Orange County ... Here is what they have to say about squid ganions. "A couple years ago ago we had a guest speaker at the shop. Jeff Marsilio skipper of the Old No.7 and also a commercial squid fisherman when the charters aren't booked gave us the low-down on fishing white seabass and making squid. He introduced us to a new product which he discusses on the video we made of his presentation (see the Fishermen's Journal). It took us a few weeks to get the product here, and it's something you're going to want if you are in water's posses squid, the things we call "candy bait." There's no better bait in the sea, certainly no better bait for white seabass. If you fish from a private boat and target the big croakers, buy a couple of these catcher rigs and a good underwater bait-light. You'll find the combination invaluable." |

There's not much we can do about "anonymous" posts on this forum. This is the only forum I use that does not prompt you to "join" where you must provide an email address and some personal information before you can post threads. Until we have some sort of registration requirements, we will still get the occasional inappropriate posts. I'll say nothing else about this except, the best thing we can do is just to ignore them. This is a great place to visit and share information with some wonderful people. Be safe ><((((º>`·.¸¸´¯`·.¸><((((º>. **Happy Holiday's to all** PismoG |

Not island fish ...but still WSB. Use your meter guys ... If those fish are here like is being reported than the squid is close by. Fresh dead is the ticket if you dont have live ... dropper loop to depth on your meter or iron with fresh dead attatched works well. I know where Carl caught those fish a few years ago .... they may still be in the same areas ... Will eat fin bait, but would run by Giovanni and see if he has any squid first. D |

eric, if i get a chance to get out and look for c-bass, i think trolling a white hooch or spoon through the bait balls would work. i've had some limited success this way. early morning or daytime, for me, best bass catches have come during the day, these aren't island fish..... |

For the Perchmasters--- "Gulp" artificial worms for perch--what kind? They only have redworm (like regular earthworm), nightcrawler, turtle back (huh?) and sinking minnow at SM Wally-World. Want to give this a try with my daughter whom will be getting a nice new 8-12# rated rod/reel courtesy of Dad for Christmas. Any other info for setup appreciated. It's been a long time for me but used to have a blast. Fave rig used to be single m/o grub on #4 baitholder hook, 20# fluoro leader with a 2 oz sliding sinker ahead. TIA, Ray |

Eric was thinking of going out of Morro today, but based somewhat on the forecast, but mostly on the fact that since Eric only knows how to drive a stainless steel shaft through a seabass and not get one to eat a thinly disguised hook, he didn't go. Tomorrow looks pretty ugly gang. Swell was way up this afternoon, with a 10-15 knot SW wind on it and rising. Tomorrow the surf is to continue to rise with the wind. But with luck, this wsb showing is just the beginning. Eric Endersby |

Gary Foster went out Thursday (Port San Luis) and found the bait balls, reported small anchovies in 180-240 ft. of water 2-3 miles sw of the harbor, lots of bird work and good conditions. Got a late start (Del did not open until 8 am?) , so missed the bite (my guess it is a before and right at sunrise bite). So the conditions look good just need a boat on them early am. Eric was thinking about going out of Morro today? |

WSB stuff = If you find squid, flyline it with a 3/0 hook and a 1/4 oz slider. They like full moon and 3-4 days before and after. At Catalina they like the low end of 64-68 degree water, up here...I don't know but obviously it will be cooler. However, stable water temperature is important. Water depth is less important than finding that offcolor break. Good Luck P.S. This info is out of a book, not from experience! |

Squid is by far the best bait for WSB! They like to hang out on hard dirty edges in fairly shallow water. I have Mark Wisch's book at home and will post some of the more important details for you later this evening. Good Luck! |

Will, I don't know but it's worth a try. I'd be happy just to wet my line and take the boat for a run. According to Jayelder, sounds like the trick is to find the bait balls. It's the most exciting news I've heard from our area in a while so I'm going to give it a whirl and see what happens. Wish me luck and I'll let you know how it turns out. |

I don't know if there is any live bait available but it sounds like that's your best bet. Try a sabiki rig around the pier at PSL for bait. I'd start out at the pea patch and around Pecho rock where there's lots of kelp. You may want to try a fast trolled spoon with a whole frozen squid just off the kelp beds in about 40 feet of water. You may get into the blue rock fish there but you should be able to release them unharmed due to the shallow water. From the earlier post it sounds like they're active just before sunrise. Watch your sounder for bait balls. Go Gett'm. Let us know how you do. Saturday looks the best for conditions: Wind 10kts or less in the morning wind waves 2 or less 5 to 7 swell @ 13 secs. Family: Sciaenidae (Croakers) Genus and Species: Atractoscion, nobilis* *previously known as Cynoscion nobilis. Description: The body of the white seabass is elongate, and somewhat compressed. The head is pointed and slightly compressed. The mouth is large, with a row of small teeth in the roof; the lower jaw slightly projects. The color is bluish to gray above, with dark speckling, becoming silver below. The young have several dark vertical bars. The white seabass is closely related to the California corbina, but is the only California member of the croaker family to exceed 20 pounds in weight. They are most easily separated from other croakers by the presence of a ridge running the length of the belly. Range: White seabass occur from Magdalena Bay, Baja California, to Juneau, Alaska. They usually travel in schools over rocky bottoms and in and out of kelp beds. Natural History: The diet of white seabass includes fishes, especially anchovies and sardines, and squid. At times, large fish are found which have eaten only Pacific mackerel. At the minimum legal length of 28 inches, the average white seabass is about 5 years of age, weighs about 7.5 pounds and has been sexually mature for at least one spawning season. Fishing Information: White seabass are fished primarily with live bait in relatively shallow water, but they will also take a fast-trolled spoon, artificial squid or bone jig. Live squid appear to be the best bait for a white seabass, but large anchovies and medium-size sardines are also good. At times, large white seabass will bite only on fairly large, live Pacific mackerel. The young of this species are exceptionally vulnerable to sport anglers for two reasons. The first is that as juveniles they inhabit shallow nearshore areas, bays, and estuaries, and the second is that they are not easily recognized as white seabass by the average angler. Commonly, these young fish are mistakenly called "sea trout" because of their sleek profile and vertical bars or "parr marks". To add to the confusion, these bars fade as the fish grows. There is a 28 inch size limit and current fishing regulations should be checked concerning bag limits. Other Common Names: sea trout (juvenile), weakfish, king croaker. Largest Recorded: 5 feet; 83 pounds. Habitat: Deep Rocky Environment |

Central Coast Anglers, I had some fun up there with you all this year, even though this was not the best of years for the pelagics. I have to say the best scorpinade and toadfishing is found on your waters. The reason that I will keep rollin to SLO county is the group of not only the finest anglers, but the courtesy and sportsmanship of a majority of the anglers in the area. Although I can't tell the difference between 6 foot seas and 16 foot seas, have the happiest of holidays to all who make it happen! The IdiotSoCal. PS I guess if'n ya git a s*#t pot full a them there sand crabs and boil'em wit cayenne pepper ya might just have sumpin' there! |

Jayelder, Thanks for the info! Makes me want to get the boat wet but you're right about the launch (beach). Not much water under the boat right now. |

Very interesting data here, thought I'd share. This came from the Ifish forum up north. One BFT makes 3 trips across pacific in less than 600 days, 25,000 nautical miles, wow! http://www.toppcensus.org/ http://las.pfeg.noaa.gov/TOPP_recent/index.html Gary |

White Sea Bass at Port San Luis. Travis Evans has been getting WSB in his halibut trawl net out in front of the harbor in 180-240 ft. of water. He reports to "look for the sardines and fish that spot", he sees "seabass coming up under the bait fish rolling on the surface". The fish range from 8 - 22 Lbs. The trailer boat launch is not accesable at the low tides now (sanded in) so watch the clock and tides. The WSB bite in the early morning hours, so you might have to launch the day before and try and get Marty on the water taxi to give you aride in the am to a rental mooring (or spend the night?). Fish these WSB a few hours before sunrise and quit a few hours after rise. Use white or silver colored jigs like Salas 6x, squid or try and catch some live bait on the "luck joes" or the Sabiki Bait catchers. post to us know if you get any WSB's. I think it is three fish limit and have to be 28 inches??? Blackie, was your friend using boiled sandcrabs the way I posted? (boiled on the beach in seawater) I'm going to give it another try , If it's not to much trouble, could you try it too, and give me your opinion? Comparing the "Perchkiller Blackie" to anyone else is not fair. |

Mike; No I have been having such fantastic luck with the BLOODY SAND WORMS I think Ill wait till they get picky to try those boiled sand crabs , the other day one of the guys in our club was fishing them at SANTA ROSA CREEK alongside me , and I outfished him with the rubber, The tides are early this week , so I may go get some mussels this afternoon on the minus tide and fish the bay tomorrow , next week will be good tides in the surf, seems like you can fish hard on the incoming and pick up a few , but when the tide is at the peak they really start, beats the hell out of raking leaves. Saw a note about rumors of harpon boats getting albacore 50-75 miles out of Morro on JDs Tackle site today 12/10. Anyone hear of such a thing and are there still harpon boats working there? Maybe he meant gill netters? Bob http://www.jdsbiggame.com/index01.htm |

That is a world class rooster Stac!!! The jacks are fun in the surf though, eh? Sierra are way cool, did you get those off of the beach? Sierra do make the best ceveche. Here's my recipe: - Cut sierra in 1/2" cubes. - Cut up a bunch of limes and squeeze until it completely covers sierra (place in fridge or cooler) - dice 1/4 cup sweet onion - mince 4 garlic cloves - chop up cilantro (1/2 cup?) - 1 Tablespoon of hotsauce (preferably habenero) - 1 4 oz. can of Herdez salsa or 1 diced tomato Stir together with fish once fish has turned a little white (@ 1 hour in fridge). Serve with tortilla chips or sliced fresh corn or flour tortillas. Yummy |

Caught a bunch of toro's and a few sierra's. brought back a few pounds of sierra for ceveche. Doug or anyone else, could you post your recipe thanks, Stacey |
