Fishing at the entrada produced fair fishing including a few grouper, yellowtail and lots of barracuda. The shark buoys out to the west are producing a few dorado to 15 pounds. With seven commercial net boats fishing for the sardines in the bay, the bait resource is quickly disappearing and the poor fishing being reported is the result this continuing assault on the resource. Two boats fishing Thurs. (6/23) could only come up with a few corvina, cabrilla and grouper. Makes one wonder when the Mexican government will wake up and smell the coffee and stop the carnage. Diana Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters, reported excellent fishing in the surf on Magdalena Island for corvina and pompano. The esteros continue to produce grouper, corvina, snapper and a few smaller snook. Devil¡¯s Curve and Los Barriles produced the best action. For the land-locked at San Carlos there was fair fishing under the bridge at the entrance to town. If you are into Mako sharks there has been a good show 10 miles north of Boca Soledad just a few miles off of the beach. Out of San Carlos at the entrada, Enrique Soto reported a fair snap for small yellowtail to 8 pounds and a few grouper in the low double digits. Outside, a few smaller dorado have been caught under the shark buoys on a 210-40¢ª headings approximately 20 miles. With the continued winds, few are venturing outside the entrada because of rough seas. http://www.bajafly.com/Newsletter/leopard.gif Water temperature 62-71 Air temperature 69-77 Humidity 90% Wind: West 17 mph Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:37 a.m. MDT Sunset 8:18 p.m. MDT |

Still some wind to contend with this week that kept most of the anglers close to the beach. The corvina bite lit up at Lopez Mateos with double digit catches the norm. A few snook hooked and lost after they scurried back into the mangrove stumps. A few snapper were caught at Devil’s Curve. Offshore, the tuna seemed to be in the 20 mile range and outside of Lopez Mateos the dorado continued put on a show only a few miles from shore. Everybody is just waiting for the water to warm up a few degrees and the exotics should kick in nicely. We will be fishing with clients for the next few days out of Lopez Mateos and will have a first hand report next week. Giant squid and scallops seem to be on everybody's mind this week. However, with a little digging I did find out that there are a few dorado off the beach outside of Lopez Mateos. Corvina and pargo seemed to be the catch of the day in the esteros. Up at Devil’s Curve there were a few snook that got the better of our clients. They were headed back out today to give them another chance. Offshore 25 miles on a 230¢ª heading produced decent tuna up to 25-pounds. Back closer to shore near Punta Hughes, a few giant squid were found, but seemed to be moving up to the north. Up at the Thetis, there were a few grouper reported, but everyone is still waiting for the exotics to arrive. Esteros producing fair catches of corvina, pargo and a few small leopard groupers. Devil¡¯s Curve produced primarily corvina, with the snook still among the missing. Still plenty of wind to deal with. Outside, weather permitting there as some quality sized tuna 210 degrees 15 – 20 miles out and that seems to be the best action for the entire area. Still the be squid around outside the Entrada as well. The reports for the Esteros have been very few fish, even the cabrilla have a severe case of lock jaw. One interesting report was a fifteen lb. snook that was caught near the base of the commercial pier. One more thing, closer to town, under the bridge at the entrance to town produced some decent early morning action for corvina, pargo and even a few leopard grouper. Sounds like the guys are overrunning the fish. Plenty of sun and wind is the story for Mag Bay. The giant squid continue to be the best thing going on the fishing front. Several boats spent a couple days pounding the Devil’s Curve zone with dismal results. I did hear some rumors of tuna 20 miles offshore, but with the wind and high seas, no one has been out to confirm the report. Finally, a few yellows showed under the bird schools at the entrada; there were also a few sierra mixed in. If you ventured outside the entrada, the bird schools showed the way to some decent bonito and skipjack action. Water temperature is beginning to slowly creep up, which should bring in some of the exotics. Los Barriles produced non-stop action for cabrilla with an occasional snook grabbing the fly catching the unsuspecting angler off guard. Also a few corvina and grouper could be found up at Devil’s Curve. Same action for skipjack and bonito could be found outside the boca up at Lopez Mateos. The esteros up there also produced a few decent shook and enough corvina to keep the anglers interested. Water temperature 62-71 Air temperature 68-75 Humidity 64% Wind: Calm Conditions: Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:57 a.m. MDT Sunset 7:53 p.m. MDT |

Not much to report this week as most of the attention was directed toward the unusual run of Humboldt squid outside the entrada. Reports of squid to 30 pounds were the talk of San Carlos. With perfect weather, the action both inside and outside should begin to pick up in the next few weeks. There are still a couple of whales hanging around, delaying their long migration North until the very last minute. |

There was little surface action to talk about at the entrada, however a few grouper that were deeper in the water column were found near Santa Margarita Island. We’ve been hearing rumors of tuna 40 miles south of the entrada. Corvina and a few quality snook were found up near Devil’s Curve. The halibut bite was pretty consistent on most of the sandy beaches with the south side of Belchers being one of the better spots. A slowly retrieved olive Baja Deep Diver was doing the trick for the snook. After several weeks of windy conditions, it finally settled down with welcome sunny skies and no wind. Up at Devil’s Curve, the snook began to bite and I heard of at least one that was in the 25-pound class. Out at the entrada, there were a few small firecracker yellowtail as well as sierra under the bird schools. Outside, there were plenty of skipjack to keep the rods bent. Diana Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters, Lopez Mateos, reported some large snook at Boca de Soledad along with plenty of pompano. Still nothing of note to report offshore. Easter celebrations brought recreational fishing to a standstill this week. Outside, it was Victory at Sea conditions. Even up in the esteros, the wind ripped most of the week keeping the few fisherman there close to home base. While there were a few halibut and corvina caught, it was pretty slim pickings. Conventional fishermen were at the entrada three days ago and got one good-size halibut, a big grouper, yellowtail and lots of barracuda. Shark fishermen have run into lots of squid a couple of miles outside the entrance. There is also loads of squid inside the bay and lots of whales – but definitely not good fishing inside. Weather is absolutely beautiful. Very calm in the mornings with a slight wind after 12 noon. Inside the estero (estuary) they have been catching corbina. Water temperature 69-75 Air temperature 64-71 Humidity 58% Wind: Calm Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:46 a.m. MST Sunset 6:30 p.m. MST |

It’s been very windy afternoons for the past several days. You need to get out early to take advantage of the first few hours before the wind picks up. Several day ago, a few large grouper or maybe a white sea bass were broken off at the entrada, the resident small yellowtail continued to provide fair action on a See Through Deceiver with an olive-colored back. Early as it is we are already receiving some vague reports of yellowfin tuna out to the west near the shark buoys. With only a few anglers fishing the esteros, it is hard to gauge the bite. The corvina have begun to bite and there were several snook landed and – of course – more of them lost. The whale watching season is beginning to wind down with only about 20 whales with their calves still in the harbor to be seen. Water temperature 69-75 Air temperature 64-71 Humidity 58% Wind: Calm Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:46 a.m. MST Sunset 6:30 p.m. MST |

Whale watching is still taking center stage for both Lopez Mateos and Puerto San Carlos. There are still a few small yellows under the bird schools at the entrada as well as a few leopard grouper deeper down in the water column. The esteros produced a few small snook both at Los Barriles and Devil’s Curve. It’s been a little cooler this week, but all-in-all nice weather. The few that ventured out to the entrada (entrance) were not disappointed. A few small yellows and leopard groupers couldn’t resist a slow retrieved Baja Deep Diver. Up at Devil’s Curve, the snook did their snipe impression and were among the missing this week. As usual for this time of year, more time was spent whale watching than fishing. Magdalena Bay, Baja Mexico Nice weather most of the week brought out the whale-watchers in full force. The entrada produced a few small yellows, sierra and a full-on barracuda bite. Up at Devil’s Curve, the snook still continued their elusive ways with only a few small ones caught. Up at Lopez Mateos, the Whale Festival is history and it is back to business as usual. Not much action on the outside where lumpy conditions persisted. Corvina, sierra and a few leopard grouper were all that could be found in the esteros this week. Water temperature 69-75 Air temperature 66-71 Humidity 25% Wind: WNW 13 mph Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:57 a.m. MST Sunset 6:23 p.m. MST |

Wind and rain dominated the area this week. Whale watchers needed slickers to stay dry. No one seemed to mind as there are plenty of whales and even a few with calves already. The trip out to the entrada yielded small yellowtail, barracuda and a few leopard grouper. The trick is getting your fly down deep enough in the water column for the grouper. For the first time this year, Devil’s Curve produced a couple of decent snook – one 16-pounds and the other 12. Weather reports call for improving conditions during the week. Anyone want to get snookered? Up at Lopez Mateos the Whale Festival is in full swing and the town is packed with tourists who couldn’t resist the combination of whales and a party. Whales dominated the scene at both Puerto San Carlos and Lopez Mateos this week. The few pangas that ventured out to the entrada found scratchy fishing yielding only fair results including a few small yellows, grouper and barracuda. Up at Lopez Mateos, the annual celebration of the whales, “Festival Ballena Gris,” will be held Feb. 12. The event will include the crowning of a Queen of the Festival and the celebration of what many locals are calling the best whale-watching season in several years. The esteros continued the same pattern of slow fishing influenced by poor weather reinforced by strong winds. Squirrelly weather including some rain kept most of the fleet close to home. Only fair fishing reported at the entrada on the good days. A few small yellows and grouper were the best anyone could come up with. The esteros above Lopez Mateos produced fair action for small sierra and a few grouper. The locals continue preparations for the upcoming annual celebration of the whales, “Festival Ballena Gris,” Feb. 12. Nice weather greeted the large number of folks arriving to get up close and personal with the whales this week. Best action continued to be out at the entrada. A few yellows, small grouper and the barracuda were thick. I am not aware of anyone who ventured up into the esteros this week, so there is little to report on that front. Up at Lopez Mateos the focus is primarily on the whales and the upcoming annual celebration of the Whales, “Festival Ballena Gris” will be held Feb. 12. Puerto San Carlos . . . The entrada (entrance) produced a few yellows as well as leopard grouper if you can get the fly below all of the barracuda on the surface. Up in the esteros, the corvina shut off leaving only the cabrilla for the few fishing this week. The whale count continued to climb with more than 15 spotted near the entrada. Lopez Mateo . . . Last week local fishermen caught an 80-pound grouper. Outside the channel it was slow due to weather. There were 3 or 4 whales spotted and one mom and her calf in the bay. Lopez Mateo will be having the Whale Festival soon. Baja on the Fly report by Diana Hoyt, Magbay Outfitters. Marginal weather persisted most of the week causing an uncomfortable ride for yachts traveling through the area. By the end of the week it was clear skies and no wind prevailed. I think the crews were spending more time hanging on than fishing. Water temps definitely cooled down this week. The entrada produced fair-to-good fishing for small yellowtail, leopard grouper and barracuda. The whale count continues to grow each week and both Lopez Mateos and San Carlos are beginning to fill up with eager tourists in search of an up-close and personal experience with a unsuspecting whale. Still little action to report in the esteros from both San Carlos and Lopez Mateos. Magdalena Bay, Baja Mexico ** There’s “iffy” weather on the outside including rain. The few yachts traveling through the area reportied a couple of marlin a day off of Punta Tasca and fair wahoo fishing from the ridge up. There also were reports of lots of football-sized tuna at the Thetis Bank. The esteros were lightly fished with mixed results including a few grouper and cabrilla. Rumors of a couple of whales being spotted up at Lopez Mateos has everyone anticipating the arrivals of the herds in the next few weeks. IN GENERAL: Good traveling weather on the outside as several yachts head up the line for Christmas. Still a few billfish, dorado, tuna and wahoo to break up the monotony. Inside, with few clients interested in fishing, there was more attention paid to Christmas preparations. With whale-watching season just around the corner, everyone is hoping Santa will bring some of the friendly giants with him on his visit tonight. YELLOWTAIL – A few smaller firecrackers under the birds at the entrada. CORVINA – A few small ones at the pier and bridge. SNOOK – North end of the bay is the best bet. HALIBUT – Sand beaches and a slowly retrieved Clouser should do the trick. SIERRA – Under the bird schools is the best. |

IN GENERAL: Big news this week was that several yachts traveling though the area found a wad of wahoo on the Thetis. Still a few billfish reported in the southern sector below Punta Tasca from the pinnacle on down 10-15 miles. Not many fishing in the esteros at San Carlos and just a few up at Lopez Mateos. Both areas reported decent action for corvina and sierra with a few grouper, pargo and even an occasional snook for the persistent. IN GENERAL: Offshore has produced consistently good action with the few boats in the area reporting 3-5 billfish a day along with a few dorado, tuna and fewer wahoo. The best action being found is in the southern sector below Punta Tosca. Inshore, the San Carlos area reported spotty fishing including corvina, cabrilla and a few leopard grouper. Mag Bay Outfitters reported fair-to-good fishing in the mangroves for a few snook, grouper, pargo and sierra near Boca Santo Domingo. SNOOK – Northern end of the bay seems to be the most productive. HALIBUT – Sand beaches and a slowly retrieved Clouser should do the trick. SIERRA – Only small ones. |

IN GENERAL: John Lyddon, Corona Del Mar, Calif., fishing with Ruben Duran landed an impressive 30-pound snook near Boca Santo Domingo. Offshore, the best action has moved down on the Potato Bank, below Punta Tasco, with excellent stripey fishing reported. Plenty of doubles and triples for the few boats passing through the area as well as dorado and tuna. Jamie Pierre, Seattle, WA, along with his band of brothers headed over to Lopez Mateos to fish offshore with Mag Bay Outfitters using their 26-foot catamaran, “Mar Gato”, skippered by Ruben Duran and an offshore panga with local pangero, Sergio, they headed out the Boca to see what was shaking. Turned out to be a wide open Yellowfin bite only 12 miles off the beach. Limits all around for both days. Unfortunately, with the Pacific cooling off quickly, the dorado, wahoo and billfish seem to have headed further down the coast ending what many consider a lackluster season. In the Esteros up at Boca Santo Domingo on the last day the group found a few sierra, pargo, grouper and lost one large corvina. On another subject, Don Juan, a 72’ Elliott owned by John Lyddon from Southern California was anchored just off the pier in town. This is the first time in a number of years that a Sportfishing yacht has managed to come in through the Boca. Bob Hoyt of Mag Bay Outfitters had provided a guide to lead them in. I met Don Juan’s Captain, Billy Callinan, while I was there last week and he told me about the wide open pompano bite at Santo Domingo. With the Don Juan backed up to the mangroves they landed three pompanos up to thirty-two pounds. The last time I can remember hearing stories like this was when the legendary Captain Gene Grimes use to make forays up into the mangroves with the 90’ Legend. Water Temperature 69-75 Air Temperature 68-73 Humidity 100% Wind WSW 11 mph Conditions: Clear Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:37 a.m. MST Sunset 5:37 p.m. MST Nov. 26, Full; Dec. 4, Last Quarter; Dec. 11, New, Dec. 18, First Quarter; YELLOWTAIL – Entrada holding mostly smaller fish. CORVINA – Even these guys have been tough to come by this week. SNOOK – Not one snook bite for the entire week. HALIBUT – Very good if you’re interested. SIERRA – Plenty of very small ones.

IN GENERAL: Jamie Pierre, Seattle, Wash., arrived with a group of four to explore Magdalena Bay. The first day at the entrada was perfect weather and good fishing with a variety of species including leopard grouper, pompano, yellowtail, halibut and, of course, a wad of cabrilla. Yesterday (11/12), up in the esteros was tougher with westerly winds and strong currents to contend with. They still had action with corvina and pompano with white deceivers and Baja Deep Divers being the hot ticket. Jamie and group will be moving up to Lopez Mateos today to fish with Mag Bay Outfitters and are hoping to get out to the Thetis Bank for some of the dorado, tuna and wahoo action on Mag Bay Outfitters’ 26-foot catamaran, “Mar Gato.” Water Temperature 72-79 Air Temperature 68-77 Humidity 39% Wind NW 13 mph Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 5 miles Sunrise 6:41 a.m. MST Sunset 5:39 p.m. MST Nov. 18, First Quarter; Nov. 26, Full; Dec. 4, Last Quarter, Dec. 11, New; YELLOWTAIL – A few firecrackers at the entrada. CORVINA – Still around. SNOOK – No luck this week. HALIBUT – Punta Belchers had all you want. SIERRA – Few and far between. |

(11/6-11/12) IN GENERAL: North winds beat us up pretty good this week. Fortunately, all our clients had gone home. Despite the gusty conditions, the guides found a wide open bite at the sticks for ladyfish and hung one Bubba Class rooster that was lost in the surf caused by the wind waves. Guide Josh Dickinson and I headed up to Magdalena Bay on Wed. (See below for report.) AIR & SEA – Water temperature 78-83 Air temperature 69-78 Humidity about 51% Wind: North 18 mph Conditions: Clear Visibility 15 miles Sunrise 6:30 a.m. MST Sunset 5:34 p.m. MST Nov. 18, First Quarter; Nov. 26, Full; Dec. 4, Last Quarter; Dec. 11, New + OFFSHORE: Still some tuna to be found if you get out. You’ll likely find them under the porpoise schools. + INSHORE: Best bet early morning before the wind lights off. + BEACH: Wind waves and off-color water didn’t prevent Josh Dickinson tying into a quality rooster that got away as he tried to beach it in the suds. BILLFISH – Not much to talk about this week. YELLOWFIN TUNA – Under the porpoise, looks for the birds and try to get there early. DORADO – Strung out from inshore to offshore. ROOSTERFISH\JACK CREVALLE – Plenty of small jacks and a few good sized roosters up and down the beach from Rancho Buena Vista to La Ribera. BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK – Breezing schools in front of La Ribera. PARGO AND CABRILLA – Rocky points and pinnacles in front of La Ribera best bet. SIERRA – Bring wire or lots of flies! |

I fished the Thetis on the 4th and 5th for good action on the wahoo. We caught 6 wahoo 30-40 pounders 7 tuna 10-20 lbs 6 dorado 10-18 lbs and two striped marlin. We got cut off on a lot more wahoo so troll with wire. It was easy to make bait at night at Santa Maria. One boat caught a 350 pound blue. the weather was great and the water was blue and 74 degrees. |

IN GENERAL: Bob and Diana Hoyt, Mag Bay Outfitters, reported great action both in the esteros and out at the Thetis Bank. John Sullivan, Encinitas, Calif., finally broke the ice, catching a quality snook weighing in at just under 20 pounds as well a gaggle of leopard groupers earlier this week while waiting for the winds and sea to subside. When the winds quit, they headed out to the Thetis Bank for some wide open action on tuna and dorado. In the wahoo department, the wahoo won, biting them off several times. Only a few marlin were seen and none caught. The bait balls that Magdalena Bay is famous for were among the missing. It sounds like my timing is pretty good as I will be heading down for three days of fishing in the esteros and three days offshore mid-week. Water Temperature 72-79 Air Temperature 60-76 Humidity 100% Wind NW 13 mph Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 6:37 a.m. MST Sunset 5:42 p.m. MST Nov. 12, New; Nov. 18, First Quarter; Nov. 26, Full; Dec. 4, Last Quarter. IN GENERAL: What a difference a week makes! Offshore, the dorado are thick with a enough wahoo to put your teasers in peril. While far from wide open, the complaint this week was that it was difficult to get past the dorado and wahoo to catch the marlin. Strong currents at the entrada slowed things down this week and the esteros continued to bump along with only fair fishing for corvina, cabrilla and an occasional grouper. Water Temperature 72-79 Air Temperature 71-77 Humidity 87% Wind Calm Conditions: Scattered Clouds Visibility 3 miles Sunrise 7:33 a.m. MDT Sunset 6:47 p.m. MDT Nov. 4, Last Quarter; Nov. 12, New, Nov. 18, First Quarter; Nov. 26, Full. YELLOWTAIL – As the current subsides they began to bite again. CORVINA – The high spot in a slow week. SNOOK – A few smaller ones. HALIBUT – You can always find a few in the shallow water near sandy beaches. SIERRA – Watch under the bird schools throughout the bay.

IN GENERAL: Still windy afternoons, the boats out early are finding lots of dorado at the shark buoys 210-240˚ 14-20 miles. The bonus is every boat going comes back with a few wahoo. Not many marlin yet, only singles now volume yet. Esteros were a tough sell this week with only corvina, cabrilla and a few grouper for several days fishing. IN GENERAL: Calm mornings and wind in the afternoons has everyone watching over their shoulder. Offshore 210- 240˚ beginning at 10 miles there are plenty of shark buoys holding herds of dorado and enough wahoo to make you think wire might be a good idea. While few marlin are being spotted, the bait balls that attract them are beginning to be spotted out in the zone. A recent trip to the Thetis Bank yielded only dorado. When the wind comes up, head back to the entrada and chase the yellows under the bird schools. There are also a few grande sierra mixed in, more wire??? Up in the esteros, it is mostly corvina and a few leopard grouper to bend your stick. Water Temperature 72-79 Air Temperature 72-82 Humidity 69% Wind 11 mph Conditions: Clear Visibility 5 miles Sunrise 7:25 a.m. MDT Sunset 6:58 p.m. MDT Oct. 20, First Quarter; Oct. 27, Full; Nov. 4, Last Quarter; Nov. 12, New YELLOWTAIL – Mostly firecrackers with a few 10 pounders to keep you honest. CORVINA – Spread out throughout the bay. Try Devil’s Curve to start. SNOOK – This week you can spell it S-N-I-P-E. HALIBUT – Sandy beach at Belchers on the south side. SIERRA – I heard of one that was 10 pounds. |

IN GENERAL: Rough seas all week prevented many from venturing out. There were a few dorado, wahoo and marlin with lockjaw reported at 14 to18 miles on a 230-250 heading for the few who braved the conditions. Back at the entrada, for those with more nerve than discretion, the yellowtail and grouper kept their party going. HALIBUT – Always! Just find a sandy beach and try a slowly retrieved Baja Deep Diver SIERRA – A few mixed in the bird schools at the entrada. |

IN GENERAL: By mid-week the wind had quit and it got hot. Dorado and marlin have begun to arrive in significant numbers close to the entrada. Try a heading of 230 – 240 degrees and you should find the action at about 15 miles. With the flaky weather earlier in the week plus shrimp season, no one was fishing the esteros. YELLOWTAIL – Bird schools near the entrada to a few miles offshore will get in the neighborhood. CORVINA – Try a popper at the bridge or the pier. SNOOK – Still waiting for the larger variety to get going. HALIBUT – Sandy beach, shallow water and olive Clouser should be a winner. SIERRA – A few mixed in the bird schools at the entrada. |

IN GENERAL: With Tropical Storm Javier marching up the west coast of Baja, everyone here in San Carlos is hoping that it either fizzles out or travels on up the coast. IN GENERAL: Tough to get outside with the lump caused as Hurricane Howard passes by out to the west. Water temperatures continue to climb which is a good omen for a good fall season offshore. Esteros were less productive this week because of some large tide swings caused by full moon. IN GENERAL: Few anglers this week to take advantage of the entrada’s continued good fly-fishing with leopard grouper, firecracker yellowtail and other rock-dwelling critters whacking a well presented Baja Deep Diver almost every time it shows up in the neighborhood. Water temperatures are creeping upward and a few reports of dorado and marlin at 20 miles west are beginning to filter in. Look for things to really get going in mid-Sept. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO IN GENERAL: Tropical depression Blas came and went this week leaving unsettled conditions offshore. Some wind and large swells still remained on Thur. Out at the entrada, the yellows shut off but the grouper were still biting at a pretty good clip. Rocky points at Santa Margarita Island produced the best action with several fish in the mid teens. There were several “mystery bites” that never stopped until the line broke. The esteros were lightly fished again this week. Consistent corvina catches with a few grouper in the mix along with mucho cabrilla. IN GENERAL: The entrada (entrance to the ocean) continues to heat up with more yellows caught early morning there. Corvina, grouper and cabrilla are up in the esteros (estuaries.) Diana Hoyt called to report Captain Ruben Duran had scored big time on grouper to 30 pounds outside the Boca Soledad near Lopez Mateos. He also reported a large black sea bass well over 100 pounds. Diana also reported that their new 17-foot Carolina skiff fishing the esteros surrounding Lopez Mateos had found great fishing for corvina, leopard grouper and cabrilla. Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: Light pressure from the recreational anglers this week. Most of the action was centered around the Devil’s Curve area and Los Barriles Estero. Fishing on an outgoing tide with Baja Deep Diver produced mixed results with a few smaller variety snook, a few leopard grouper and, of course, lots of spotted bay bass. Water Temperature 64-70 Air Temperature 68-77 Humidity 28% Wind 4 mph from the NW Conditions Clear Visibility 5 miles Sunrise 6:39 a.m. MST Sunset 8:07 p.m. MST May 27 First Quarter, June 2, Full, June 9 Last Quarter, June 17 New YELLOWTAIL – The entrada (entrance) is the best bet, however no one seemed to be interested in making the 20 mile run to check it out. CORVINA – Poppers and white deceivers kept them coming. SNOOK – Should begin to see some of the larger ones as the water warms up. HALIBUT – You can always find a few in shallow water along the sandy beaches. SIERRA – Only a rumor this week. |

Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: Slow but steady would describe both the mangroves and the entrada, with few exotics biting. Everything seems to be filling up on red crabs, so a red fly might be in order. Lopez Mateos: Capt. Ruben Duran on the “Wendy” took Bob Hoyt and Regio out for inshore fishing. They had one grouper and limits of sand bass with many releases of sand bass. Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: Pretty much a mixed bag this week. Out at the entrada, the yellowtail played more hide than seek. Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: Early in the week the entrada produced an impressive 10 different species ranging from an 8-pound pargo to triggerfish for our group. Shooting heads were a must, as many of the fish were found further down in the water column. If the barracuda and bonito didn’t get the fly, there were plenty of cabrilla as well as one pez fuerte (amberjack) which lived up to its name and gave the angler a respectable tug of war. The esteros continued to produce plenty of pompano and corvina, but few snook were to be found. IN GENERAL: Rain on Wed., with cool temps had the group bundled up like they were fishing the Oregon coast. A few leopard grouper, fair sized corvina, pompano on surface poppers gave everyone a few giggles. The snook continued their illusive ways with only a few bites and no successes. One great note: a pod of five whales posed for a photo op on our way back to the launch ramp. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: Rainy earlier in the week, sunny days now after the fog burns off. A couple of the esteros south of San Carlos produced some good leopard grouper action with several larger snook reported hooked and lost. Puerto San Carlos: IN GENERAL: The whale population continues to grow and everyone, it seems, is out looking for the giants. There are many calves to ooh and aah over. CORVINA - Slowed down a tad this week. SNOOK - Disappeared completely this week. HALIBUT - Punta Belcher produced a few. SIERRA - Look for the bird schools. Puerto Lopez Mateos: IN GENERAL: We've been fishing out of Lopez Mateos for the last 10 days and the fishing has been good. Our four trips to the Boca Santa Domingo produced 25-40 fish per day: corvina from 2.5- to 12.5-pounds as well as pargo up to 12-pounds and up to six species of various grunts and small pargo (up to 3 pounds); also botete and midshipmen all on live bait or pieces of shrimp. We would purchase the shrimp from fishermen as they were coming in from a night of fishing, usually $100 pesos per kilo. Many times all you need are the heads and bodies of the little ones, which leaves lots of big tails for supper. Captain Ruben Duran put us on to some excellent fishing areas and techniques. We used small lead head jigs with scampi tails as well as live bait shrimp rigs. We also spent one day at Devil's Curve south of Lopez Mateos, fishing only jigs and crocs. We caught many small to medium cabrilla and leatherjackets, and we also hooked, but sadly lost, a trophy golden jack (palometta) on a 1.5 oz. chrome croc. My friend would have had this jack replica mounted if he had landed it. One trip outside for giant black sea bass produced nothing, but this was not for lack of trying. Sea conditions were horrible and we are looking forward to next year and trying again. Baja on the Fly’s Lopez Mateos report by Brad Murakami, bajasurbrad@hotmail.com |

IN GENERAL: Tuna, dorado and skipjack dominated the offshore catch with few marlin to be found. Inside the esteros the fishing continued at a blistering pace. Snook continued to bite and the lucky ones released a few in the teens. Corvina and pompano seemed to be laying in wait for any popper that hit the water. MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO http://www.magbayflyfishing.com/ IN GENERAL: Offshore, news of a wide open tuna bite was welcome, since the billfish were few and far between. The esteros (estuaries) were a much better choice. Devil’s Curve went off big time this week and the ones who were bored with the lack of billfish action offshore were chattering like a bunch of frigates on a bait ball about the bite inside. Snook to 25 pounds, leopard grouper in the mid-teens, corvina, and pompano bit with a vengeance for several days on the tide. IN GENERAL: By all reports, the outside action slowed way down this week. Yachts began arriving for a tournament this week and I suspect someone will find the herd. Yellowtail are at both the entrada and entrance to Santa Maria Bay closer to Punta Hughes on the north side. Esteros are still on fire for corvina and pompano. IN GENERAL: Pudge Klienkauf's Women's Flyfishing® group finished up their first estero expedition and she is already back in Alaska telling everyone what a great trip it was. The gals had lots of new species to play with including snook, corvina, cabrilla, pompano, grouper and even a linga. Several members of the group spent most of the trip experimenting with floating lines and surface poppers and the results were encouraging. Weather and conditions were as good as it gets in the mangrove-lined esteros. Meanwhile, on the outside the Pacific was showing her cranky side and it was pretty much victory at sea for the few yachts venturing out. More yachts are heading down the coast so the action should heat back up this week as the winds and high seas subside.
