Will, I was thinking of doing a salmon seminar at the Vet's Hall on Sat. the 25th. I don't know how many people are interested, but we could turn it in to a potluck barbeque. We could do a raffle to pay for the hall, and give the rest to cetral coast salmon enhancement. I can get all the donations for the raffle. It could be more like a salmon "get-together" for the people who allready know how to fish. |

Hey Dave ... I own that bar stool. If I can get a boat ride you know I will be up there to hang with you, Stu and clan. Hopefully the boat will be sold by then ... and doubt I will have the new one ... so will be forced to be a boat ho for awhile. We should hit the islands for the flat ones soon! |

Cloud thanks, I'll keep those numbers in mind. I won't know anything till I get the boat wet again. Looks like it might not be till the Salmon opener April 1st. I would check things in fresh water but electric current in salt is quite different (much better conductor than in fresh). In a way I'd like to leave things as they are to check it but on the other hand, I don't want to sacrifice opening day finding a problem then. To be on the safe side, I think I'll start with removing all termination points at the grounding buss bar and cleaning all the terminals. I put all the wiring in conduit where it runs under the gunwhales from the transom to the helm so I don't suspect any problem there. I'll pull all the zincs and clean them up again too. Gary |

Pismo G/Gary-- If you get a negative reading, or higher than +1.0 on the voltmeter might as well pack up the gear till problem found/fixed--IMHO. You can give me a call on the water boat name Joy Lyn/Robalo 22 WAC, Ch 68 Would like to hear any (valid and recent) WSB news. Weather here is absolutely great and would go at the drop of a hat. Steve ... I am opening a new catering business is Paso soon. IF my pit and trailer are done before then I will drag them over. If not I will drag the boat and you can jump on with me. Would be nice if this was planned a week or two after opening day .... some of us plan on joining the ranging party up in Moss this year. Keep this an open conversation ... And Steve, bring this us if you see me sitting on a bar stool in Pine St. |

You guys are right on. I think the BBQ is a great idea and would like to participate. I have a BBQ trailer (I guess you call it "Santa Maria" style). Only problem is, if I tow it to the BBQ Location, then I can't bring my boat, so I'd have to mooch a boat ride on with someone else! Moss Landing or Avila, doesn't matter. I live in Paso Robles which is closer to Avila. Just let me know. Steve www.BajaFishing.Org |

Here's an idea. If someone had one of those BBQ trailers, we could set up in the parking lot in front of Portside Marine. Should be plenty of parking for all without a bunch of empty boat trailers in the way and the weather is generally better there. Just a thought. Gary |

That's a great idea...the NorCal boys do this every year up at Moss and Half Moon....it's legendary. I'll be up at Moss for the opener...it will be my second time....I'm tired of opening day skunks in Santa Barbara...towing my boat up there, Stuart on Graylight is towing his boat up there, we put the campers on the trucks and we already have our spots reserved at the Moss Landing RV Park, right next to the harbor. Pretty fun, and I limited both days of the weekend last year. Great food and drink, very good times... Dave My Three Sons |

I only know a few of you at this point, but would love to get together to talk "fish" with everyone. Any ideas? I could help organize, cook, etc. Will |

Just read the fishing regs on rockfish, another long 4 months. I hope I'm not reading the salmon regs correctly stating they will "meet" in April to discuss?? Was I reading it wrong?? By the time they post an opening date they will be up by San Fran. Thought the opener was first of April?? Does anyone know for sure?? |

Just received the following from Ed Roberts CA DFG: The recreational fishery for rockfish (Sebastes sp.) is closed to boat-based anglers from January 1 through April 30, 2006, reopening on May 1, 2006 from Lopez Point to Point Conception. The recreational fishery for rockfish (Sebastes sp.) is open year round to divers** and shore-based anglers. The daily bag and possession limit is 10 fish within the RCG Complex (includes all species of Rockfish, Cabezon and Greenlings) in combination of all species per person, with a sub-limit on bocaccio (1 per person, minimum size limit of 10 inches total length, also included in the 10 fish RCG Complex aggregate limit). Yelloweye rockfish, canary rockfish and cowcod may not be retained (bag limit: zero). The Department of Fish and Game is proposing regulation changes that may alter the seasonal structure and depth limits for all federally managed groundfish and associated state managed species. Check this site, call the Recreational Groundfish Fishing Regulations Hotline at (831) 649-2801, send an email to AskMarine@dfg.ca.gov, or call the nearest DFG office for the latest information. Caught a 23 lb. salmon, and several others not as large, last year on the adjustable type pink lady. With several guys fishing with me it was sure easier than the heavy weight release or manual down riggers. Many, many years ago we used them a lot up in Oregon. Trolled off of a CG cutter out of Coos Bay back in the early seventies before they had the adjustable type. It certainly is cheaper than downriggers but you make a guess as to the depth. |

The Pink Lady also has(had?)an adjustable trip so checking bait/clearing kelp was easier (once tripped the device comes to surface). It takes a stiff boat pole to get them to trip as I remember. Havent seen one in a long time. Have used but I never had much luck with them, but didnt really give them a fair shot. Went to downriggers. Cloud out |

Has anyone had any luck with the small plaining type devices for getting down to the salmon? I know Pink lady used to be a brand name. They would be a lot cheaper than dropping two pounds every time you get a hit, if they work. |

Re: salmon trolling Going through every electrical connection in my boat and sealing them up *tight*, changing engine zinc (trim tab)more often and wire-brush boat zinc started making all the diff a few years back. Even starting winning a few opener JP's here n there. You can check your boat voltage with a downrigger, not sure with mono. Use a multi-meter on DC, connect the ground lead to the battery ground and positive lead to the rigger wire. .7 volts was the magic number for me, set lures right at end of bubble trail. With new electric riggers, running .5 volts. I set lures about 5' back of ball and has worked great. Never a problem to get fish if they are there. Cannon (computroll) website has a wealth of info on this subject "positive ion control". They also have a neat java program whereby you can feed animated surface fish. Ayup cabin fever bad. Your results may vary. Ray Cloud |

pismo, the current could be surrounding your boat..it could come from many areas..prop, drive, shaft, thru-hull...it doesn't necessarlly have to come directly from your fishing line....it's a stretch, i know...but just one more thing to cross off the list....ever think you're just 'unlucky'?...just messin with ya... i'm sure you'll get'em this year... good luck, john |

Conman, You guys may be onto something but I think my problem was, that I just wasn't getting down to the fish. I had no idea how deep the gear was running. I would peel about 40 to 50 pulls off the reel and drag the 2lb cannon ball but still didn't know how deep it was running. I tried different drop backs but I don't think I ever got down to the fish. It's quite a handfull cranking the gear back in with that old Penn Jigmaster. I could have tried more weight but 2lbs+ tackle was kick'n my butt after about the sixth time I brought it in to clear the kelp or change the bait/lure. Gots to get me one them downrigger thangs! If (e) current is the problem with the mono, wouldn't you think it would go away using braided line? G |

I would be willing to wager that Taurus is right on!! Several years ago, I could not get bit to save our butt, even fishing right next to people using the same gear/speed/tack in good bites. I did not have riggers, but the engine our electronics were putting out a current. Adding addtional zinc to the boat made all the difference in the world. |

Taurus, I don't think current is an issue since I don't have downriggers. I've just run 20# mono with 30# fluoro leaders. I've since spooled up the reel with Stren Super Braid. I couldn't feel the strike on the mono when I was targeting rockfish in 200 ft of water. Way to much line stretch when down that deep. I don't have a big arsenal when it comes to rod and reel combo's. I fish and old Penn 500 Jigmaster on a 7' 20/50 Seeker when out deep for rockfish. I use the same combo for Salmon. Santa didn't bring me that 2 speed lever drag I wanted. I wonder if the WSB will be around on April 1st. I did pick up a couple of those Tomics. I man can't have too many lures you know. Gary |

Gary, I run the dodger about 20' behind the downrigger weight. With your rig, I would run the dodger 5' behind your weight. I have found that I get more strikes at about 3.5 miles per hour with the Apex. You are going to need a bit larger weight (3lb) to get it down. I usually fish between 65' and 150' down, depending on what I see on the sonar. Hey I have two used Cannon manual downriggers in the shop that I might sell. It will make all of the difference in depth and convenience. I went to electric Scottys two years ago and I love them. Will |

Will, I don't have downriggers so I'll be dragging a 2lb cannon ball off of a sinker release. How much leader would you put between the ball and the dodger. I had no luck running it about 48" at 2.5 to 3mph. I tried a watermelon apex, hootchies and everything else in the tackle box as well as the RSK's and the FBR's with whole frozen herring but still no hook ups. What the heck was I doing wrong. Please help! Gary |

All I usually use for salmon is a large chrome with green edge Apex 36" behind a 8" chrome/prism dodger. This set up never fails me if the fish are around. Be sure to re rig the Apex with 25 lb. good line. I always use Maxima green. Can't wait for season to open. Will |

Anybody have any experiance using Tomic Lures for Salmon? Also, has anyone tried the Salmon Koke-a-Nut lures behind a Sling Blade Dodger? All I ever here is FBR's RSK's Green Croc's and Purple Haze Hootchies. I wanted to try a few different things this April and wondered if anyone has had success with these set ups. http://www.tomiclures.com/classics.htm Gary |

Man 98 was a good year. I remember one day in late may or early june when I was out with sam and we got limits of rockfish and we stopped to try for halibut. He caught a nice 20lb flattie. He gave us all a steak from it. As we got in we got word of a crew trip for salmon right out front so I jumped on and we got full limits of big slabs. Then jumped on the albacore boat that night and caught my first tuna along with 9 more. It was an amazing 48hr period and my family and neighbors loved me for a couple of weeks with all the fish I brought home that week. I wanted to say thank you to John and Darby for letting me work there that summer. I was probably a pain in the but to be around and work with, but man that was an amazing summer. Thank you guys. Oh yah and not to mention the tournaments that went on that summer. Oh man good times. Quite possibly the best 4 month period of my life. |

Yep, those were the days...Now if the 7 year cycle theory holds, maybe we'll be back in business, if the outer waters aren't closed to fishing... |

Since nothing else is happening, how about a history lesson: Thurs Jan 8, 1998; Jim Neilsen and I caught three albacore, 45#,60# and 65#'s in Estero bay at 35:05 and 120:55 in a 14' tin boat. Fri Jan 9th, 1998 The Princess caught 31 albacore. June 3rd 1998; Albacore were caught at 20 miles and the rest is history! Ahh for the good old days !! |

Dave, yes, it's true-maybe. Trip is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. on the 30th. Returns around 5:00 p.m. on the 31st. Of course, this depends on the weather, and enough passengers. There are not enough passengers yet, so yes-it would be good to make a reservation so that the trip doesn't get canceled early. Sometimes they cancel early so that people don't have to make the drive. Cost is 130.00. # of days (& limit) is 1. Fishing for rockcod (no lings). I don't think I really need to tell you what to bring, but if I'm wrong, feel free to e-mail me. I'll be there so I'll have extra gear, tackle. Bring light rods, swim baits. |

Michele, Heard there's a boat going north on the 30th. Is this true ? Reservations required ? Cost ? # of days ? Returning when ? Fishing for ? What would you recommend to bring along ? Dave |

Catfishing in your local neighborhood might produce better results than possum-fishing. I've never caught a possum on hook n line but can appreciate they wouldnt fight well. Take a light or ultralight spinning rig and tie up a hookless (important) hootchie. Purple haze color seems to work well. You can take this on your evening walk and usually get a few takers. Sight casting to lunkers in driveways is one technique. Bushes, shrubs and hedges sometimes produce. Dusk to dawn is best time. This is strictly catch-and-release fishery with NO HOOKS. Be sure to keep the drag setting light. You should get at least one good run out of each hookup. This WILL be our future if we do not get involved in the regulations setting process, and support those willing to go to bat for us all. CLOUD out. |

Most baits nowadays are 'Jerk baits' They may not catch fish or electric-fry chicken but they sure as heck 'Jerk' the money out of our pockets. There's not a lure made that's caught more fish than fishermen. Merry Christmas guys & gals (Fisherpeople) |

OK the Electric Chicken ad for lure by DOA is at boaters world link on this page. Be sure to click directly inside the advert where it says "go"--not "shop for fishing equipment". Go to "Tackle" then "Worms and Spinnerbaits" its at the bottom of second page (per my brower settings--you results may differ). As stated there isnt a picture yet but here's another interesting detail--its also a "jerk bait". Electric Chicken indeed. Cabin fever worsening by the minute. CLOUD out. |

Although it wasn't called an "electric chicken", I used a lure like this (chrome body and white body) along the Florida panhandle in the early 1980s for sierra mackerel, bluefish, and king mackerel. I tried it for shallow water rockfish a couple of years ago and it worked but I couldn't get it down to the bottom through all the blue rockfish. |

Gary I was looking through the boaters world link on this page, on the top to the right side, went to "Fishing" then the "tackle" link. Hafta run right now if you cant find lemme know I'll look later. They are working on putting up an image, in fact many of the baits dont have pics yet but the website says they are working on it. Cloud, What's this "electric chicken" lure? I can't find anything on DOA's site about it but I found a "Got cha Lure" with that name. It's a hard plastic body w/ two treble hooks 1oz. 3 inches long. What species was the DOA lure targeting? Here's the link http://www.seastriker.com/gotcha/ Gary |
