Feeling a little embarrassed right now with my outburst. Well, I just took up fishing a few months ago. I go out most weekends. I have hit spots on Jumeirah Beach, Umm Al Qawain (near Hamriya Port/Town) and Near Hyatt Regency. So far I have caught all of one fish. I have read all the forums and try to follow the advice. I am currently using a 6lb line with either no.4 or no.8 hooks. I do use a float and for bait have alternated between cut sardine and shrimp. I dont know what I am doing wrong. I mean in a total of 8 mornings of fishing I have caught 1 tiny fish while I see people around me landing bigger stuff all the time. So I just wanted to read up and find out some more about the different techniques/equipment being used. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email is david_carter2020@yahoo.com Thanks guys. David p.s: Martin James, I am sending you a long email. Also read the article about you with interest in the boat owner magazine. Those were some beauties you had caught. |

Hello Mad Hatter and all, If you did not get an immediate response it could be because of the time of the year. Some of us had to open our "pressies" and spend some time out of "Cyber Space". E mail Martin James you will get what you are looking for and with all things fishing the magic word is ......Patience! May every one have a fish full 2006 and remember to protect for the future! |

Dear Mr. Mad Hatter, We ought to consider ourselves very lucky that we have people like Martin, Heber, AJ, and Jeen sharing their info and expertise with us...trust me, whatever I have been catching or have learnt in the past few months is by reading up posts put up by these stalwarts and then experimenting on my own. It is a game of 'trial and error'. Even I used to stumble on many a question like you before I took to serious fishing, and it has been only then that I have got closer to being just a novice. So do not lose hope or get frustrated if you dont get a personal answer to your questions, but the fact remains that all the posts on this board and on www.fishing.invisionplus.net are full of vital info somewhere or the other. So just take a chill pill and cast, but make sure you have 'TIGHT LINES'...!!! Cheers..!! Please visit my website for some fishing pics: www.sandip.patankar.blogspot.com |

Hi Mad Hatter, I'm sure this board along the other one www.fishing.invisionplus.net is serving the purpose of getting the guys to gether. I'm sure all here will agree that we have learnt a lot from the postings here. We were also newbies once upon a time and there was no forum to help us out. Personally, I have met other fisherfriends from these boards and its going great. So, don't get upset....take your gear and get down to sea and you'll learn to fish..... not by just reading forums. Cheers Heber |

Can somebody please help me out. I have just started fishing. I bought a basic setup for some shore fishing. But I need some help. I have been unlucky so far in catching fish. What kind of bait do you use? Should I keep the line moving to attract fish or do I just let it float on one spot. Any other techniques that could help. Appreciate any help |

Hi Guys The Sportfishing/Flyfishingclub looks like it could really take-off in 2006. Please tell all your serious fishing friends about the happenings and watch this space! We all need recongnition some times for our achievments ,but to just brag about the killing of small fish should not be encouraged! If you where a hunter you would not go bragging about shooting a little Buffalo calf or a little lion pupp. The fish in this area needs to be protected firstly by "Fisherman for Fisherman" We must be the keepers of the Sea and also protect more than just the fish but the whole eco system. Don't litter and especially don'tleave pieces of fishing line all over the place. This is a death trap to any bird! We are really trying to get a good thing going with this fishing club ,but we need to show the authorities that not all Fisherman are Fishkillers. We would like the support of the consevation authorities as they will be the ones able to open "New Waters" for us. We need to report those who are threatening our sport! Come on guys lets us all think before we kill, It is just as sick to see the aimless killing of little babby fish on a web site or in the fish markets, as it is to see the canned lion hunting in Africa. "Let the water teem with living creatures and let birds fly above the earth......" ".....rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." Support Catch and Release ! |

Hi everyone It rather sickening to see all the dead fish. Ask yourself am I a sportsfisher or fishmonger. We should only harvest a fish for the table. We should never kill the small fish, they are usually food for the bigger fish, also the fish eating birds, The latter are doing it to survive. We do it for sport. We should never ever kill the big fish. These are the better gene pool and produce more eggs or milt. We must also press the authorities to enforce the size limits. Its most important that when we do have a good day we don't publicise the location The commercial guys who never care about the future will go out and clean up. I wish you all A Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year Martin James |

If the government is serious about clamping down on under size (and oversize breeding fish) then they need only go down to the markets and start collecting the fines. Also you cant simply state undersize (little) fish are not to be kept, you need to have a measurable quality that people can use to judge what is undersize and what’s not. |

Hi guys, Good to see that lots of us are catching fish. Judging by the size of some of the catches it is clear that not many people are operating catch and release. My guideline is quite simple, if it its not good eating, big enough or I'm not going to eat it then it goes back. The challenge is in catching the fish, lets let everyone enjoy that challenge! |

Thought I would let you guys know that the fishing in RAK is very good at the moment. Ive gone out the last 3 mornings and the kingfish have been biting freely each day. Although i fish off a boat I am often in casting distance of shore so those shore anglers can expect to catch a fish or two as well. |

Guys, Just to remind you that "CATCHING CRABS, SQUIDS, CUTTLEFISH, MUSSELS & JUVENILE FISH IS PROHIBITED BY THE FEDERAL LAW NO.23 OF 1999" atleast shore fishing. The environment guys can pull you up if you're found with these. These guys are fishy about these things but don't mind screwing up the environment wholesale like the Palms etc.. Hi guys, Now we are getting something going here! It is so good to see fellow anglers sharing information and assisting each other where they can. Those interested in starting up a fishing club please e mail me your details on my private e mail so I can update you on the mailing list.(ajandj9@emirates.net.ae) I will make a list of numbers and then send them out to other fellow fisherman so we can get together to fish. I think we should also just take care of giving out to much info about fishing spots, as some "other people" also read these sites, just to go and plunder these fish for personal gain. My husband and I live in Riyadh and want to do a couple days fishing trip in Dammam or Bahrain - been to Dubai and had fun catching kingfish but looking for cleaner water and a calmer environment. Anybody have recommendations on contacts for a fishing charter and hotel in Dammam or Bahrain. We want to try Muscat but it's harder to get to from Riyadh (few direct flights and overly expensive airfare) so we don't want to do it this time. Any advice is appreciated. |

Hello Rob, Sorry couldn't reply to your message...my phone is out of credit...hehehehehe...have been fishing too much to go and fill it up...Yeah you're right about the license...one does need it to fish from under the bridge if you are using a rod..the older handline way of wishing doesn't need a license....but we do fish there anyway...and the prospects are really bright when the tide is coming in and the Baracudas are hunting for the small fish that swim upstream....pls give me ur landline number...mine is 04 3979587...pls call me on my cell or house phone, would love to talk to you....take care....Tight Lines...(how true) |

Dear Dave Thank you for letting us know what is going on. I have seen the destruction of the environment over the past fifteen years. Don't the powers to be realise that people need a quiet oasis in their lives where they can relax. Not all of us want jet ski's, power boats etc. Peace and quiet are a very valuable commodities in this modern age. The pristine flats at UMM AL-QUWAIN ( I could be wrong on the location name) was the home of a varied fish and aquatic life, wading birds and much more. Its a magnificent sight seeing the Pink Flamingo's as you quietly wade the flats. This delightful area, once commercialised and destroyed cannot be returned to a quiet oasis. I am as certain as I can be that I spotted a bonefish coming from the mangroves on a falling tide. Over many years of targeting these fish I have often seen the odd straggler leaving at the last minute on an ebbing tide often in ankle deep water. I don't know what can be done to stop the project if anything. All we can do is probably hope some commonsense prevails, so the flats and the area surrounding them are left alone for the birds, waders, animals and aquatic life. If it was happening in the UK we might be able to get some action In the UAE I doubt it. Though I would like to be proved wrong.Sorry I cannot be more positive. AJ, Never seen any bonefish here. I have fished umm al quawain for years and with the mangroves it would be the best spot for them. Martin had mentioned that he thought he saw a bone there. In which case this press report is even more worrying: UMM AL-QUWAIN, United Arab Emirates - The Khor al-Beidah lagoon is a pristine tidal flat teeming with wildlife, including endangered birds, sea turtles and manatee-like dugong that swim among its tangles of mangroves. But a bevy of dredges and construction gangs are about to begin transforming a 1,500-acre parcel into a $3.3 billion luxury conglomeration of homes, shops, marinas and beach resorts aimed at foreign buyers and tourists. The crown jewels of the development are private villas to be built on artificial islands with gated access -- and views over one of the few remaining mangrove archipelago left in the Persian Gulf. Developers say the waterfront complex, called Umm Al-Quwain Marina, will skirt the mangroves and leave most of the 20 square miles of wetland untouched. "Our aim is to create a community of special neighborhoods bordering an open stretch of water with views of the marina against a backdrop of the gulf," says Mohammed Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, the Middle East's largest developer. Environmentalists are aghast. They fear construction and people, cars and boats will drive off Khor al-Beidah's internationally famous wildlife, including birds that migrate from Siberia to Africa and the rare socotra cormorant that nests almost exclusively on the Arabian Peninsula. "We've seen it happen everywhere else. When you start to dredge and build marinas, that's the end of it," says Colin Richardson, a 30-year resident of Dubai and author of the periodic Emirates Bird Report and a guidebook to local species. The leaders of Umm Al-Quwain, however, are eager to bring big projects to their emirate, which is the least-developed of the seven states in the United Arab Emirates. It has little of the energy wealth of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the emirates, and few of the tourists of Dubai, one of the world's fastest-growing cities and tourist destinations. The 35,000 people of Umm Al-Quwain, most of whom live in the small coastal city of the same name, make their livings from fishing, growing dates, building traditional sailing dhows and, lately, working at a container port. Development is coming fast, though. The deal for the lagoon complex was signed July 23, and a few days later developers announced Umm Al-Quwain's desert interior would be the site for a new city that could eventually house as many as 500,000 people. The initial phase was valued at 8.2 billion dirham ($3.3 billion). The once empty Emirates coast is awash in construction that has buried coral reefs, mangrove swamps and other wildlife zones. The tidal lagoon here is one of the last such areas in the country, especially since the partial bulldozing of a mangrove swamp on the east coast. Richardson says a half-million birds stop at the Khor al-Beidah every year. "The birds don't have very much left," he says. "It's a very important site. It has the highest density of winter migrants anywhere in eastern Arabia." The lagoon is a shallow tidal flat where turquoise sea and orange sand form swirling arabesques, bordered by grassy desert dunes. The protected waters are laden with small fish and crabs that lure the birds that nest in adjacent mangroves and on a sandy barrier island. Bird enthusiasts are running out of sites in the Emirates. Richardson says hundreds of people visit Khor al-Beidah every year for the wildlife. He and other activists long urged the government to protect the lagoon, arguing it is more valuable as an ecotourism destination than as home to another luxury housing complex. BirdLife International, an advocacy group, has designated Khor al-Beidah an "important bird area" for hosting of 85 species, including the country's largest wintering flock of crab plovers, one of the world's rarest shorebirds. The wetlands also are stopping place for the Emirates' only flock of Great Knots, birds that migrate from nesting grounds on the Siberian tundra. Developing the lagoon also could threaten endangered sea turtles and dugongs, a manatee-like sea mammal, Richardson says. The marina project is meant to resemble canal-side neighborhoods of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with residents able to walk to their boats and quickly cruise to open sea, says Mark Amirault, Emaar's senior director of development. As is common at similar luxury developments in Dubai, the homes will be targeted for sale to buyers from all over the world, especially Britain and elsewhere in Europe, as well as India, Pakistan and Arab countries. Emaar, established in 1997, is responsible for many of the projects that have turned Dubai into the Middle East's growth hub, including Burj Dubai, planned to be the world's tallest building when it opens in 2008. "What you're seeing in this region is on par with development in North America 100 years ago," says Robert Booth, Emaar's executive director. What a terrible shame. |

Fishing report East coast 11/12! The Met man said no wind!!!! Boy was he wrong we had to abandon all efforts to cast a fly after a couple of hours falling about, trying not to break our rods as a nasty little eastely kicked in. Seeking the shelter of Shark Island we manage a bit of casting practice and landed a couple of pan size Rockhod / Hamour. Hi AJ, Good to hear that Martin is coming over. Iam into fly fishing, in the sense that I have just aquired my kit and am practicing like hell. But yes! been fishin ever since i was knee high to a grass hopper mostly Spin fishing on light tackle and trolling and bait casting to king fish , trevally and the rest of the brood . I am hooked line and sinker for this idea of setting up an Angling club and would do what ever possible to make this work. So keep us posted through this site on developments and initiatives . Tight lines Jeen |

Hi Guys, Been Away for a while. Also forgot the password. Reading all that jazz about fishing on the East coast, some guy hung up about not catching any thing, Experts advising. A classic example of a "storm in a tea cup ". Anglers as far as I know are generally a nice bunch of guys and enjoy nature as well as their angling. If there is no fish there is definitely the great blue azure or the beautiful streams, the mountins and the rivers. And Fishing is the one area where all of us get away from the rat race and the daily grind. So cheer up guys and enjoy life! Tight lines. Jeen |
