Hurricane “Stan” caused some heavy flooding to some parts of Puerto San Jose. A few of the private houses in the Villas del Pacifico Compound were flooded with two to three feet of water but most are OK. At the resort, a few large trees were fallen and some flooding to the employee quarters and parking lot but the resort is OK and open for business.

Currently the roads to both the Villas and Marina Sol are closed but should open soon. Because of the poor weather no boats fished this week.

The weather has been very nice with sunny skies and low to mild winds. For those that ventured out last weekend they released between 1 to 3 sails but had good dorado action averaging around 12 dorado's per boat. The blue water was found between 16 to 20 miles which made for a very nice short ride to the fish.

With nice weather and blue water less than an hour away, a few boats headed out last weekend. While there were a few sails to be found the dorado fishing was very good. It is not often that the sailfish take a backseat to the dorado.

Most of the annual boat maintenance is complete and the countdown has begun for the season to get underway. By mid-October, the much-awaited season will have begun. If you haven’t made your reservations for the upcoming season yet, you better do so soon before all the best dates and boats are taken.

Still a month to go before the sailfish action begins to heat up. While the sailfish seem to be here year round, the clients don’t begin to arrive in numbers until mid October at the earliest. Most of the crews are just finishing up their maintenance and clean up and hopping from one foot to the other waiting for the season to get underway.

The fishing this week (week ending 09-10) was picking up against the last two weeks. There were no sportfishing boats that ventured out Monday to Thursday;however there was a local turnament on Friday and Saturday. The boats that did venture out in the turnament had to go out between 40 to 50 miles and were rewarded with releasing between 8 to 10 sails on both days. The Friday and Saturday saw sunny days with no wind and calm seas. For more information contact us at greatsailfishing@yahoo.com or visit our web-site at www.greatsailfishing.com

September is “make ready” month for what everyone hopes will be another extraordinary year. Don’t miss the September\October issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters magazine. Read Scott Leon’s “Swimming with the Fishes” story about Guatemala sailfishing. Our good friend Bill Boyce shot the photos for the article and they are outstanding.

This week few Sportfishing boats ventured out. For those that did releasing sails were in the low digits with some Dorado in the 10 to 25lb.class. The local captains are saying that the water is unseasonably warm which accounts for the low sailfish numbers. The last two days of the week saw strong winds and rough seas.

According to the locals, the unseasonable hot water contributed to the slow down in the action this week. Factor in strong winds for the past few days and most of the fleet decided to stay in the Marina. Only a few sailfish and dorado were accounted for by the few boats that did decide to venture out.

Seas continued to be less than hospitable for the boats that headed out early in the week. Most thought that it was worth the effort with high single digit catches to mid double digits catches reported.

The 78˘Ş blue water was found 45 to 50 miles out and today the seas settled down for the few boats headed out. Not only was the sailfish action decent there were plenty of dorado and tuna as well.

Typical weather prevailed throughout the week with mixed thunderstorms and seas to 3 feet. The fleet is now in the off-season routine with few boats fishing mid-week. The boats venturing out over the weekend found good fishing at the 30 mile mark with a few boats reaching double digit scores for sailfish. In addition to the sailfish, there were enough dorado and tuna to fill in the gaps. Two boats, La Piragua and the Full Circle (31-foot Bertrams) reported releasing a blue marlin each, in the 300-pound range.

This past week ending 06-11-2005 saw seas in the one meter plus range with overcast to sunny skies and some rain during the nights. This past week saw calm seas with overcast skies and rain during the night. Boats at the start of the week were going out 40 to 50 miles and releasing 1 to 3 sails per day plus dorado and tuna. At the end of the week the fishing came in to 20 to 30 miles with boats releasing 6 to 9 sails. Also, there were small to large schools of dorado 8 to 15 miles out. The weather this past week has been nice during the day with occasional showers in the evenings. The winds have remained light and variable and pick up temporarily during the showers. Since we led this condition report with the weather you have probably figured out no one fished this week.

This week brought some rain to the Pacific Coast but the days were usually cool. For those that ventured out Dorado's were still in great supply with the Bora-Bora landing 42 dorados and 3 sails in half a day and Fernado Agulliar(who must love dorado)who landed 235 dorado over two days. There were also reports of several marlin bites, but no release reports. This coming month of June is Guatemala's rainest month but is the month that usually brings the anlger lots of Dorado and marlin along with those sails. For a up to date report please contact us directly in Guatemala at 011-502-7832-1991 or e-mail us at

Weather was unsettled after the hurricane that passed well below our area. The lack of clients this week left the fleet tied to the dock while the local pangeros whacked the dorado. Sailfish? Who knows! We bet they are out there waiting for someone to come play.

This week brought a lot of rain to the Pacific Coast but no real strong winds or seas because topical storm Adrian was to far south. The weather has been great over the last week with light winds and pleasant conditions. The potential bad weather associated with Tropical Depression Adrian never really made much of an impact on the San Jose area of Guatemala. The anglers are few and far between, but those that did come this way experienced some great action. There were three boats out for a couple of days, and all three had double digit days, with twice as many shots as releases. The run to fish was 22-32 miles.

The action has picked up, and the weather was great for the first part of the week. We had the pleasure of hosting return client Burt Turner and first-timer Matt Johnson for three days of fly-fishing. Burt is an experienced fly angler who has made at least one trip to Guatemala each year for the past several years, and Matt was there to experience the action for the first time after hearing Burt recount the great action over the years. Over the three days, the fishing action increased each day along with the duo's skills and they quickly built up to double digit releases and even enjoyed some dorado and tuna action. On the final day, Mother Nature kicked the seas up, but at the same time exponentially increased the sailfish action. They enjoyed a morning of non-stop action on the fly that surpassed the prior two days. As they headed out to Antigua, Matt indicated that his time in Guatemala was the best trip he had taken in 15 years, and would definitely be back.

Sat. night (4/9) brought a tropical thunderstorm leaving a soggy San Jose that greeted Lori-Ann Murphy, Reel-Women Angling and her group of five women flyfishers who had come in search sailfish action on the fly. While long boat rides were the norm, the women weren’t disappointed; flat seas and sunny skies made the traveling easy as they searched for their first opportunity to face a sailfish with only a fly-fishing outfit between them and the fish.

The entire group with the exception of one met their goal during the four exciting days of Guatemala bluewater fishing.

Those who achieved their goal of a sail-on-the-fly for the trip were Lori-Ann Murphy, Victor, Idaho; Bobbie Armor, Fremont, Calif.; Diana Rudolph, Islamorada, Fla.; Nancy Keilty, Cedar Mich.; and Jodie Reece, Florida, releasing their first sailfish on the fly and in some cases more than one. In addition to the sailfish, JoAnn “Bo” Ribaudo, Destin, Fla., found enough tuna and dorado for dinner several days to earn the title “Provider” from the group. As they toasted each other’s accomplishments with 23 year old Guatemalan rum at their awards ceremony on the final night at Villas Pacifico Hotel, they all agreed that it had been as fantastic an adventure as they had hoped for and would continue next year.

Forty mile runs were the norm for the week. Once the fish were located, the action heated up allowing most of the fleet to maintain a decent 70% hook-to-release rate. To add to the excitement, a few marlin showed up in the pattern along with an occasional dorado. Internationally known fly-fishing guide Lori Ann Murphy and her Reel Women group will be arriving tomorrow (4/10) looking to get into the billfish-on-a-fly action. Hopefully, we will be able to deliver the same kind of trip Lori Ann’s friend Paul Bruun and Terry Shade had a few weeks ago. Sailfish, marlin, dorado and maybe a roosterfish or two inshore should be enough to keep them smiling. We know the women will be ready, so it should be a fun party if the fish cooperate!

And finally, inshore there were several roosterfish released in one afternoon of fishing.

Cloudy skies persisted most of the week and took its toll, producing lower averages than normal for this time of year. 30-40 miles were not uncommon as the fleet spread out in search of the hot bite. Plenty of sailfish showed up in the pattern, but less aggressive. The trick was to entice them to take the fly.

Think pink, the usual mantra, wasn’t working so it was a good week to try some other colors. Dorado-colored Billfish Babies along with blue and white produced the best results. Everyone had plenty of shots and hookups and managed to release at least one sail a day on the fly. Dorado were thick and almost a nuisance, but real crowd-pleasers at the dinner table.

The overall conditions have been great, the run to the fish has been variable. This past week, due to Easter, there were a lot more boats spending more time focusing on dorado; with many brought to the docks by the local anglers. For sailfish on the conventional side, there was a 65% success rate with an average in the high single digits caught per day. The fly side had a 38% catch rate with a mid-range single digit success rate per boat day.

Terry Shade, Pescadero, Calif., and Paul Bruun, Jackson Hole, Wyo., finished up a successful trip last week. Terry, a long time Baja on the Fly client, couldn’t stop talking about the almost non-stop action, “This is more sailfish than I have seen in my entire life.” Surprisingly, Paul, who has fly-fished all over the world, had never had the opportunity to go mano a mano with the mighty pez vela. “If a person doesn’t get excited doing this, maybe golf would be a better sport for them,” said Bruun.

Terry and I had the opportunity to visit Antigua and Lake Atitlan on travel days and it was a wonderful opportunity to see the tropical country side. Sights included volcanoes and a 16-mile long lake nestled in the mountains at an elevation of 6,000 feet. Colorful costumes, old churches, festivals, shops crammed full of unusual art, jewelry, carvings, etc., convinced both of us that Guatemala was a special treat.

The conditions have been nice and consistent, but the run to the fish has varied this week with some fishing in as close as 25 miles and out as far as 40 miles. On the conventional side, there were 967 released sailfish out of 1347 hooked for an average of 21 per boat day. On the fly side there were 45 released sailfish out of 108 hooked for an average of 6 per boat day. Marlin made a strong showing this week with 5 released. Inshore, there was no one out.

Kim Kutsch, Jefferson, Ore., spent several days touring the countryside along with a group of his friends from all across the U.S. before going toe-to-toe with the notorious Guatemala sailfish.
This is what he had to say about the trip: “The fishing was spectacular and everything you made it out to be. I'll be looking at these pictures for a very long time. I think that was the most fun I've ever had with a flyrod. Thank you very much. After seeing the pictures and hearing the stories, Ryan is pretty certain I am bringing him to Guatemala next year in March during his spring break. The rest of the boys will feel the same way I am sure. I will get those dates from him and we will plan a trip.”

The weather has been very pleasant with overall calm seas and bright skies. During the past week on the conventional side there were 847 sails released out of 1268 hooked for an overall average of 16 per boat-day with the high boat going 34 of 44. On the fly side, there were 127 released sails out of 306 hooked for an overall average of four per boat-day with the high boat going 12 for 14. There were also several marlin that showed up and a couple were released on light conventional tackle. Dorado were encountered by every boat, and made a nice addition to many dinner tables. Inshore, there were a couple of roosterfish also released.

Jack Balch, from Fremont, Calif., finished up his trip last Sun. and here is his take on the trip:

“Thank you for a fantastic trip. I don't believe you can find a greater concentration of sailfish then I saw in Guatemala. One day we raised fish 22 different times. Often multiple fish were raised at the same time. I actually had two fish fighting to try and get my fly at the same time. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to catch a sailfish on the fly.”

This is an e-mail that we received this week. “What a great trip you all whipped together for me on such short notice. I just don't know how billfishing could get any better than it was! In four days we raised 53, I hooked 39 and landed 14. I can't get back there fast enough.” -- Joseph A. Turano

For the past week I can only report on 4 days of fishing. In those 4 days, there were 454 released sailfish out of 664 hooked with an average of 14 releases per boat with conventional tackle. On the fly side, there were 118 released sails out of 218 hooked for a average of 8 releases per boat. In addition to the sails, there were a couple of marlin hooked up, but released, and quite a few reports of dorado.
Yesterday (3/4) was the first of a three day trip with Joe Balch, Fremont, Calif. Having never caught a sailfish on the fly, he was up at sun-up ready to rock and roll. By the time the boat backed into the slip in the afternoon, he was no longer a wannabe. He had three sailfish on the fly under his belt. Yes, he was grinning from ear-to-ear. He was a great pupil and I can’t wait to see what he does today.

The conditions this past week were really nice with calm seas and fishing action from 5- to 15-miles out. There have been some days with tougher conditions, and others where the sails were just jumping in the boats. There are a lot of anglers down, and most of the boats are venturing out. During the week on the conventional side there were 2,314 hooked sails and 1,542 released sails for an average of 24 releases per boat day. On the fly side there were 691 hooked sails and 340 released sails for an average of 10 releases per boat day. The high boat on the conventional side for the week had 72 releases in a day and on the fly side had 27 releases. Truly spectacular results for a week! In the mix of all the sails were also some monsters with quite a few sails being reported in the 100-140 pound class. One of our clients on our feedback form said, "The thrill of these huge sails is going to be hard to describe.” There were dorado in the mix as well, and inshore there were several roosterfish released in one afternoon of fishing.

We also ventured over to Huatulco, Mexico last week, and will begin offering trips in March. This location looks really fabulous from a fishing standpoint with excellent billfish action from March through August. It also offers great activities for non-anglers in the group including stunning beaches and scenery. During our stay there was great action reported on yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and marlin. Look for our upcoming reports in the next couple of weeks.

San Jose, Guatemala

The conditions this past week have been very nice, with the run to the fishing getting longer during the week. Early in the week, the run was 2-5 miles and it grew to 20 miles later in the week. The early part of the week started off with some lower production and tough times for the anglers, but the later parts of the week came on strong, and for the sails the boats hooked 243 sails and released 149 of them on the conventional side, and hooked 46 and released 21 on the fly side. Dorado again made a consistent showing, and a few boats even got in to some grouper action during slow sailfishing times. Roosters were also present with most of the action occurring on live bait on outgoing tides.

Conditions in Guatemala have been unusual with the fleet putting the teasers out just a few miles from the marina. I only have stats from Thurs. (2/10), where boats on the conventional side released 156 of 217 hooked sails. On the fly-side, 13 of 31 hooked sails were released. There were also some stellar performances with one boat that had a 90% hookup ratio on 40 raised sails. No marlin to report this week, but the dorado made a strong showing. Inshore, there were several roosters released in one afternoon of fishing.

The overall conditions have been very nice in the San Jose area this past week. There were more boats out for a women’s light tackle tournament that is going on. For sailfish there were 447 releases on 668 bites. On the fly-fishing side, there were 34 releases for 60 bites. The action has been at 10 miles on quite a few of the days, with still a few boats ranging out as far as 20 miles. There are good reports of dorado being caught by the boats, but no action on tuna. Inshore, once again there were no clients out, but there were several roosters caught by a couple of the captains who were testing the waters.

The last two weeks began with some hasty weather but by last Wednesday the fishing turned very good. Last week our boats the Bora-Bora had 13 and 17 releases with a couple of nice dorado. Our boat the Stragos had 13 and 14 releases also with a couple of nice dorado's. This week our boat the Stragos had 30 and 22 releases, while our boat the Enter-prise had 17 releases with two very nice dorado's. The weather has again been excellent, the fishing has been in as close as 10 miles, and as far as 25 on some boats that ranged out a bit. I only received stats for one day this week, but in that one day, 8 boats were out using conventional gear, and had 197 hooked sailfish and managed to release 148 of those for an average of 19 releases per boat on conventional gear. Two of the 10 boats out were on the fly and got hooks in 22 sails and managed to release 14 of them at the boat. Marlin also made a strong showing with three blues released. It’s not a bad day when 37% of the fleet releases 300-450 pound-class marlin on 30-50 pound gear. Dorado were also around and being brought in with the largest going 40 pounds.

Inshore, there continues to be consistent action on roosters when we have had our crews out practicing their teasing skills on roosters and jacks, their just have not been any clients taking advantage. Water clarity is great, and most of the action is taking place in the blue water.

The weather this past week was downright ugly, with very windy conditions. A few boats ventured out, but the fishing was difficult to put it best. As the week went on, the conditions have improved, and the numbers on sailfish improved. There was a blue marlin also released. Inshore, where the wind slowly sandblasted you, there was some good action on roosterfish, and strangely enough, several dorado and a sail were caught. The water color varied between blue and bluish green in the productive areas.

The weather continues to be terrific with calm to moderate seas and the fishing action has been steady all week long. There were no local boats out, but some visiting anglers experienced some excellent action on sails and dorado. One boat averaged 17 releases per day on fly-fishing gear over three days, and one averaged 20 per day on conventional tackle. The boats have mainly been fishing 20-27 miles offshore, but are seeing fish in as close as 10 miles.

We had some windy weather again during the early part of the week that made fishing tough, but the conditions are great now. The better boats are still averaging double digit numbers on sails, but a few boats are having a really tough time of it. The dorado are also making a good showing to fill in the gaps in the day. We had no inshore report this week, and no marlin were released. We do have some remaining availability for the high portion of this season, but it is going fast! If you are thinking about going, you should contact us now.

IN GENERAL: The anglers who were down Guatemala-way this week experienced some tough conditions, but all went away happy. The overall release numbers were down to what other areas experience, at about 3-7 per day, but dorado action in-close made up for the tough sailfishing. All of the boats were able to experience great action with dorado. Once again we had no one fishing inshore.

IN GENERAL: We didn’t receive a report this week and have to assume that they are all out whacking ’em.

LAST WEEK: This past week the fishing has blown wide open in Guatemala and is as hot as it gets! Many boats are experiencing more than 50 releases per day, and several are having personal best days. One boat also had 27 releases on the fly. A few marlin have made showings, but have been difficult, and dorado are around. The weather has been great overall, and those guys that have come down fishing are all smiles after they recover from the non-stop action. If the action holds, this should be one incredible season that you won’t want to miss!

IN GENERAL: The action has moved in close to shore this past week with the sails holding at 8- to 14-miles. The weather has been picture perfect with calm seas. The sails have also showed up in force with the high boat for week releasing 40 and the few other boats out able to average high teen to low twenty releases. There are, however, only a few boats out and even fewer anglers around. Dorado are making a showing, but are scarce. No one has made the much longer run out to the tuna, so there are no tuna reports. Inshore, there was one party that fished in the estero and had a lot of fun with small robalo (snook), grouper, snapper and jacks. If you are planning a trip this season to Guatemala, be sure to pick up the Dec. issue of Pacific Coast Sportfishing for an in-depth feature, “Vela! Vela! Vela!” by Ray Rychnovsky on Guatemala fishing that talks about the double digit days in the world’s best sailfish hole. If you want to get up to speed on teasing techniques, check Gary’s column, “How to be a Tease,” in the same issue.

SAN JOSE, GUATEMALA

IN GENERAL: Just when we started to believe that our winter sailfish explosion was right around the corner, Mother Nature stuck her face into it. The weather has been rough this week after a cold front pushed through, making the seas choppy compared to the normal glass-like conditions. The action has also moved further offshore, but double digit numbers on sails are still being produced. There was a report of a blue marlin released this week, and that’s a very good sign of things to come. Dorado have been spotty, but tuna are around. Bottom line: our guys are still getting 10-15 hookups on sails a day, but it’s a long, bumpy ride to where we’re finding them.

The weather has been great, but the anglers have all but disappeared! Maybe now that the U.S. election is behind us, our fishing friends will “come on down.” There was very little activity this past week with only two boats going out. They reported slower action than the previous week, but were still able to get double digit action. The dorado and roosters are still around, and in 3 hours of inshore fishing one little girl managed a rooster that was about her size (40-pounds). All of the conditions continue to improve each week and reservations are still available for the 2004/05 campaign.

Weather has been great, very calm and still hot! We're back to double digit releases which are usually the norm. A couple of boats went out this week averaging 18-20 sailfish releases, with at least twice as many raised. These great numbers were during the full moon. Blue water is about 30-32 miles offshore. We had one boat go inshore for a day, our one and only "Chispudo," they caught one big rooster and some other inshore varieties. Fishing is rapidly approaching the peak months of Dec., Jan. and Feb., but if it keeps up this way we’ll have to add Nov. to that hot time-frame. We still have some availability between now and mid-Dec. if anyone wants to take a last minute trip.

This past week only two boats ventured out. They had slow action on sails, managing to only average 5 releases. The slowing of the action was due to the blue water moving out. The daily conditions have been good overall, and there is great action on tuna and dorado. Our boat “Chispudo” managed to pick up 15 tuna and a couple of dorado in a half day trip. The possibilities for inshore action look great and we have a party coming in from New Jersey that will be sampling both the inshore and offshore action for the next couple of days, so we will have an inshore report next week. The overall conditions continue to improve as we move into the normal high season. We still have some availability between now and mid-December if anyone wants to take a last minute trip.

As the 2004-’05 season begin, a few clients are beginning to trickle in and the sailfish are waiting along with a few marlin here and there. A report of a few roosters with Bozo shoulders cruising the back side of the beach break brings up another intriguing possibility.

Finally! It’s October, so let the games begin. Sailfish have been gathering for the past two weeks chewing on schools of baitfish outside of 30 miles. All we need now are the big game saltwater fly-fishers who want to play tug-o-war with a 100- to 150-pound screaming billfish to complete the mix.

Another couple of weeks and all the scraping, painting, repairing politely referred to as “annual maintenance” should be wrapped up. Then it will be time to do the hokey pokey with all the sailfish that continue to filter into the area. The locals have had it to themselves long enough! Put out the teasers and let’s rock.

While decent action can be found offshore for sails along with a few tuna and dorado, the locals are about the only ones here to take advantage. Back closer to shore, the roosters can be seen cruising the backside of the waves looking for bait.

Unsettled weather conditions kept the locals closer to home this week. There are definitely more sails than clients this time of year. Inshore, the roosters are laying in wait until someone shows up to play.
