Sissy,

I go to northern British Columbia every summer to Wall's Fish Camp. It is just below the Queen Charlotte Islands at Ocean Falls, BC. It it very remote and the people who run it are great! The fishing is beyond belief if you go in late July of August. Salmon in the 40# range are common. Accomodations are in a cottage at the end of a fjord with food to die for (prawns, salmon, halibut, crab, etc.) I will post website tomorrow for you.

Well, fished Surf Beach for 1 1/2 hours before and after high tide for nada this morning. Conditions seemed ideal, just no perch. Just a few other long-polers on this beautiful long stretch of beach and they were skunked also.

Tried light purple (past luck) and motor oil grubs on a 3 foot flourocarbon sliding sinker set-up. No hits-no runs-no errors. Cigars stay lit but burn too fast in that wind! I'll get 'em next time and will let you know.

A young fellow from Oklahoma moves to California and goes to a big
>"everything under one roof" department store looking for a job. The
manager says, "Do you have any sales experience ?"
>
>The kid says, "Yeah, I was a salesman back home in Oklahoma."
>
>
>Well, the boss liked the kid so he gave him the job. "You start tomorrow.
I'll come down after we close and see how you did "
>
>His first day on the job was rough but he got through it. After the store
was locked up, the boss came down. "How many sales did you make today?"
>
>
>The kid says, "One."
>
>
>The boss says, "Just
one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day.
You're going to have to improve considerably or look for another job! How
much was the sale for?"
>
>
>The kid says, "$112,237.64."
>
>The boss says, "$112,237.64 ! What the hell did you sell ?"
>
>
>Kid says, "First I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium
fish hook. Then I sold him a larger fish hook. Then I sold him a new
fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down
at the lake, so I told him he was gonna need a boat, so we went down to
the boat department and I sold him a new bass boat. Then he said he
didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the
automotive department and sold him that new Ford pick-up. I asked him
how long he was going to be out at the lake and after he said 5 or 6
days I took him down to the RV department and sold him a
slide-in camper
for the truck."
>
>
>The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a
boat, a truck and a camper?"

said, 'Well, your weekend's shot, you might as well go fishing.'"

Another thing....I want to take my wife to Alaska fishing. Salmon and halibut. We want to stay in a nice place. There is a bunch of places. Which one is a 1st rate operation?

And Josh, I wouldn't sell just the bases.
Thanks though. I see them on ebay.

Thanks Bob May for the tip on the water pump causing the leak on my 2000 Yamaha 15 hp.
I'll check that out. The bottom end looks so perfect that this idea pans out. Anyone want to buy it? I bought a new Yamaha 8hp hi thrust with power tilt and start. The 15hp is great, but is manual everything. (20")

Hey, it's a big beach, never crowded. Today I fished right at the end of the walkway comming down from the new parking lot ( the only road comming off Pecho in the park, go to the end, there is a parking lot there and a trail head to the beach) I used a 3/4 oz egg slider above a swivel then a three foot leader tied to a #7 octopus hook (almost neon pink)
and a med motor oil grub. the fish were in about three feet of water, so long casting was not nec. just keep the lure slowly comming back in. AND KEEP ONE EYE ON THOSE WAVES. They are big right now. Good Luck,
I usualy turn them into Ceviche, but the fillets are big enough that I,m going to try something else, they were too big for whole frying.
What a plesant delimma

i make cuts only about 1/2 way to the bone, all the way and sometimes they tend to fall apart in the pan. I carry a soft cooler to throw over my shoulder with a little ice, just enough for the short ride home.

spray brines work well. another way is to use ice, add salt water, and then more salt, it drops the temp. below frezing and still remains in a liquid state. it will freze them fish solid.
a tote, icechest or fishbox will work fine, i suppose a 55 gallon plastic barrel would work also

Ayup water occasionally over a gunny all day in the sun just doesnt cut it. I am spoiled/lucky having been a private boater for so many years.

Bout 4 years ago went on charter out of SD. It was lotsa fun, and at least they had a "reefer" hold. But is was a deal where they added salt to iced, recycled spray water which was then constantly/automatically sprayed over the fish--blood/slime and everything. I didnt get sick but you shoulda seen the look on face of crewman that had to crawl down in there and add the salt. The smell *reeked*--it was like red blood fog down in there. Like in War of the Worlds. I'll never forget it (or the trip's great food but thats another story).

Maybe I'll take a creel--or small soft side cooler (hey that might be the ticket) with blue ice next time out to surf. Whadya you use? Cloud out

I cut them right down to the bone, and you are right about them albies , they start growing some bad stuff when they die , and can make you real SICK, you see some of them boats in S.D. with all them yellowtail and albies sticking out of a GUNNY sack, boy I bet they taste good.
Ok stay dry maybe some GUTTER fishing later on today.

Well throwenumback makes the next adventure a lil more worthwhile. Remember tho that bigun is MY fish and must be thrown back from now on :-)

How deep do ya make the cuts? just enough o break skin or 1/2 way to bone or...? Whatabout breading? The tabasco-soy sounds just like my ticket. I will give it a try next time around.

I'm way fanatical about keeping caught fish ice cold and I just wasnt prepared so back in the briney they went. Sheesh with albies we take near enough ice to sink the boat, set up a brine slush chiller with 150 qt cooler, 'bout 30-40 mins B4 goin' in the long-term hold. Worth it tho when ya cuts um and that nice firm meat has that rainbow sheen. Argh gotta stop this will make me (more) nuts considering the three year dry spell. Cloud out

Cloud and Blackie,

I appreciate all the info you have given me regarding perch fishing. I plan on camping at Morro Bay this weekend regardless of the rain. I'm bring the nephews so I hoping I get a chance on Sunday or Monday to get out there but it't not looking good, may just have to stick staying in the harbor and doing a couple of booze crusies. If either one of you plans on going for perch, shoot me an e-mail today.

My question is what happens after September in the Southern area? Is it open until December or closed? Say it aint so for Miguel.

The changes to the recreational groundfish depth restrictions by area
are as follows:
* Morro Bay South-Central Management Area (near Lopez Point to Point
Conception): Open from May through September from, 0 to 40 fathoms (0 to
240 feet).
* Southern Management Area (Point Conception to U.S.-Mexico border):
Open from March through August from 0 to 60 fathoms (0 to 360 feet), and
September from 0 to 30 fathoms (0 to 180 feet).

FYI

Expanded Recreational Depth Fishing Opportunities Will Continue for
2006

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) announced today
expanded ocean
sport fishing opportunities will continue for California saltwater
anglers in 2006.

In April 2005, DFG Director Ryan Broddrick initiated more liberal depth
limit changes for the remainder of the calendar year. Those changes
were subsequently adopted by the National Marine Fisheries Service for
2005 and 2006.

Under the authority granted by the Fish and Game Commission, Director
Broddrick
approved extending the April 2005 recreational groundfish depth limits
into 2006 within
management areas south of 36 degrees latitude, near Lopez Point in
Monterey County. The action taken by DFG will create state depth limit
regulations that are once again consistent with the federal depth limit
regulations.

Additional changes to groundfish seasons have been proposed by the DFG,
and may occur later in 2006. To stay informed of in-season regulation
changes, call the groundfish hotline (831) 649-2801, visit the Marine
Region Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd or call a local DFG office.

Cloud;
I got over there late and tried the launch ramp, nothing doing tide was smoking out of there, went over to the jetty and fished the inside for a few of them long skinny jack smelt. There were a couple of guys fishing the other side of target rock that had caught a 4 1/2 ft leopard that morning but that was it
sounds like you did real good , and yes them big dudes fight good, not as good as SALMON Will, but like i said before beats the hell out of raking leaves, next trip looks like Cambria , gonna fish before the fishing club meeting, high tide 11 something.
Once you use them bloody worms you will never go back to them grubs.

Hi everybody. It's about time for another photo to get us all stoked about salmon. This is a personal best at 38 lbs. Sure beats the heck out of surf perch, but you gotta do what you can! Even though it's not till April 1, I still have all the equipment ready to go. Now what?

Looks like we'll be able to fish deep again this year. Just wish they would give us more time!

California Department of Fish and Game
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 06:006 Jan. 11, 06

Contact: Carrie Wilson, Office of Communications (831) 649-7191;
Ed Roberts, Marine Region (562) 342-7199

Expanded Recreational Depth Fishing Opportunities Will Continue for 2006

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) announced today expanded ocean sport fishing opportunities will continue for California saltwater anglers in 2006.

In April 2005, DFG Director Ryan Broddrick initiated more liberal depth limit changes for the remainder of the calendar year. Those changes were subsequently adopted by the National Marine Fisheries Service for 2005 and 2006.

Under the authority granted by the Fish and Game Commission, Director Broddrick approved extending the April 2005 recreational groundfish depth limits into 2006 within management areas south of 36 degrees latitude, near Lopez Point in Monterey County. The action taken by DFG will create state depth limit regulations that are once again consistent with the federal depth limit regulations.

The changes to the recreational groundfish depth restrictions by area are as follows:
* Morro Bay South-Central Management Area (near Lopez Point to Point Conception): Open from May through September from, 0 to 40 fathoms (0 to 240 feet).
* Southern Management Area (Point Conception to U.S.-Mexico border): Open from March through August from 0 to 60 fathoms (0 to 360 feet), and September from 0 to 30 fathoms (0 to 180 feet).

Additional changes to groundfish seasons have been proposed by the DFG, and may occur later in 2006. To stay informed of in-season regulation changes, call the groundfish hotline (831) 649-2801, visit the Marine Region Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd or call a local DFG office.

Josh--I usually go with PSL. Had boat "20-hour" service today. Things are sad there.

In the meantime went to MB and looked for Mike (Hey Blackie). Ended up fishing the North side of the rock maybe 1 hr. total, picked up a SLAB Barrie. This fish was about 17" long and about 4 lbs FAT w/shoulders no kiddin'. Took about ten mins to land on my 10-lb rig, what a kick. Drag screamer and everything. And after a good but quick look at it, watched it swim away healthy. Tricky part nav'ing the slippery rocks, got soaked for my efforts. Picked up two more about ten inch range--fun, also released. Had no way to keep um cold even if I did want um. Some other bites didnt stick. Was using large pieces for bait.

Those Beserkley Bloodworms Kick A. Didnt even take the grubs outa my pocket. So there's todays fish report. Mike, sorry I missed ya. Maybe next time. Cloud out

FYI All,

I pulled this off the Coastside board under the poltical forum. The attachment is on the coastside board same forum.

Attached is a memo from Phil Isenberg, chairman of the MLPA's Blue Ribbon Task Force, outlining upcoming action on the central coast project. In summary, the BRTF will review the 5 Central Coast proposals (i.e. anglers, environmental, and hybrid proposal all came from the Central Coast Regional Stakeholders Group; NRDC and HOPE are the other two with the HOPE proposal still being debated as to meeting the scientific guidelines of a "network").

Obviously the environmental, NRDC, and HOPE proposals are the most restrictive. The hybrid proposal is a "combination" of the anglers and environmental proposals. While the hybrid proposal is not extremely bad in the north it is really unworkable for our southern friends out of Morro Bay. Without a doubt the option we are supporting is the anglers network. Many thanks to Howard Egan for all he has done helping to put this together. While this plan still calls for many new closures of some variety, it has many strong conservation benefits while still preserving many of our heritage fishing locations (e.g. Ano Nuevo, Soquel Canyon etc...).

The next BRTF meeting will be at the end of this month in Morro Bay. The meeting in mid-March is when the BRTF is scheduled to make its final recommendations of MPA networks to the Department of Fish and Game (who will make a recommendation to the California Fish and Game Commission soon after).

Good reading. It's crunch time

The tides are all wrong this week unless you fish real early , looks like next week will be good.
I will be in Cambria for our twice monthly fishing club meeting on the 17th , so I think I will go early and fish Santa Rosa Creek, also been kicking around going over to get some fresh mussels and bait fish in the bay tomorrow , I will let you know if I decide to do that.

There was a raw sewage spill of 80,000 gallons off of Pismo. They are not recommending the consumption of surf perch from below Pismo to above Cayucos beach.

Carl--Blackie is more the guru than I, it was prolly 5+ years since I had been fishing the surf.

I use an 8 ugly stick w/10lb line, new Penn Captiva reel w/long cast spool. Found an old 2-hook surf rig, but tied new 20 lb fluorcarbon leaders (10"?)for #6 red lazersharp hooks red color. The red hooks hide well in the berkely red blood or sandworms; I think surfperch have excellent sense of smell and vision. A 2-oz flat sinker got me plenty of distance.

I sometimes use a single hook rig (leader below swivel hook last) with a sliding sinker above swivel. Whatever used, I think it important to be able to feel the bite. A hard-tied sinker above the hook(s) kills any feel. I always use top-notch SS ball bearing swivels theres a knot tyin' bass-turd lives in the waves :-).

Good luck and remember you don't hafta cast 70-11 miles. Many bits in foot or less depth. Cloud out

Mike and other perch guru's

I'm heading down to Morro next week to camp and a bunch of folks are coming with me. Sounds like the only action for fishing is the perch. I'd appreciate any info download. Are you fishing on the incoming tide? What weight? Are you fishing rock croppings?

This trip is dedicated to my Mother who recently passed away at the age of 80. She helped me get into fishing since I was 5 and never had a single bad thing to say about my passion.

QUALIFIER 105: EPIC Winter Ridge COW Trip! 27 lucky anglers landed 27 cows over 200# along with dozens of 150-plus models from a trip that returned Jan 5th. Make no mistake, Capt. Brian Sims and crew are at the top of their game. And the Accurate staff supported by their fearless leader, Jack N., came through.

Our first three days of hunting were hampered by less-than-ideal weather that produced catches of 25 to 45-lb school-size yft. Yes, everyone on this trip, including myself was thinking that perhaps this epic cow tuna bite might be over. But we were not to be denied. The weather finally layed down late in the trip and everything changed for the better, including our first cow at dark weighing 293#. A quick trip to Mag Bay for mackies and back to the grounds. Then, the crew and myself glassed a group of blackies off in the distance and slid in. "Make it Rain HARD!" yelled Capt Sims over the PA. This was the start of an epic 8-hr stop! But the fish would not bite like we had hoped but did hang with the boat. The "past" rig of choice in wide-open pre-dusk" bites was 100-lb main line with a 200-lb leader. But the big gear did not work for this angler or some others. So, I fell back to what worked for me during my 18 previous long-range trips to the Revilla Gigedo Islands. Since it was mostly scratch fishing using small to medium size sardines, I called upon my Accurate 30 Twin Drag spooled with 400-yards of 80-lb Izor Spectra and 40-foot top-shot of 130# Momoi Fluorocarbon leader material with Stas crimps and a Pandeles tool. It made all the difference I was able to make long casts with medium sardines in the off-corner for 5 solid bites on heavies. At the end ofd this very special day, I landed 5 fish at 183, 196, 215, 225, and 230 before the sun finally sank into the sea. Three over 200# in a day is a personal best. Yes, I'm stoked! Hope this helps some guys heading south as it's still biting really good

Drove out to Oceano yesterday just in time for hi tide. Got out, baited up with 2 x Gulp 4" bloody sandworms, cast out and got a 10" barred (released) 1st cast. Not bad. Two more good hits over next 45 mins but they got off (which was ok, surf fishing is strictly catch n release for me). Sure like those berkley baits, not messy and easy to carry in pocket.

Was great to get out, walk beach, catch a fish. The swells had come down enough to make it quite fishable. May need to try Cambria--San Simeon area next time. Cloud out.

Good Morning Michelle;
I'll help with the program. I can help promote it too at my Bar in Paso Robles (The Sportsmen Pub) where several fisher-people are regulars. As far as raffle items are concerned, I'll be willing to donate a Baja Fishing Trip. Click on my web site below for description and schedule. The recipient would be able to redeem it on any trip where I have at least 15 paid passengers. The trips regularly sell for $725/person.
Just let me know how you want to get it together.

Got tired of sitting yesterday and ventured out to do that surf fishing, some big waves but not as big as last week , we started at little pico creek but it was downright dangerous, huge waves and a nasty rip that wanted to take you with it , we ended up at San Simeon , the pier was closed down, I fished right in front of the lower parking lot , wave were big but nothing like other areas, I did manage to catch five fish and bring home three so it was a good day, using the same old setup, GULP Blood worms.
As soon as the ocean lays down the fishing should be hot.
There not Salmon, rockfish or LFT but it beats the hell out of YARD WORK.

"Salmon seminar" is set for March 18th 6pm to 10pm at Morro Bay Veteran's Hall. This won't really be a seminar though. There will be a couple of SHORT speakers (and I don't mean Sam). We will have downriggers and all kinds of tackle set up. Hopefully those of you that know how to fish will show up and give the rest of us some info. Chef Joe Anderton will be B-B-Qing (get it?). Hopefully I can talk Tom into doing sign-ups for a salmon derby. Food, soda, coffee will be supplied. Bring you own beer. There will be a raffle to pay for everything, and the extra money will go to Central Coast Salmon Enhancement. I already have some killer raffle prizes (stuff you will really use) in the box. It's not set up to be a formal thing, more of a get-together, and to share info., like Will suggested. If anyone wants to help out e-mail me. None of this costs anything, except raffle tickets. sobercaptn@aol.com

Yup, Wes, Stuart and I got up there last year the Friday morning before the opener, got slip assignments (if you could call them that) from the ML Harbormaster, and the boats stayed in the water.
They weren't true "slips" either...we were tied off, one boat behind the other, between two really crusty and unused longliners. These things had dandelions growing out of the caulking, and were inhabited only by a crew of phlegm-spewing elephant seals and their girlfriends. It was not pleasant by any means. I could have slept in the RV park but slept aboard for security. If I'm not sleeping on the boat everything comes ashore or is locked down tight.
Try to get a slip closest to the parking lot and harbormaster's office.
