WHAT THE HELL? I know marine reserves are going to happen, to what extent will be determined. They've drop our limit from 15 to 10 fish, we can only fish 6 or 7 months out of the year, we are restricted in the depths we can fish, last year I may have gotten out for rock cod once due to weather or other circumstances, aren't these all restrictions? I pulled this off the Telegram Tribune. This viewpoint makes it sound like we are going to give them the whole kit. Am I missing something here? Jim you call your self a life long fisherman like all fisherman would agree with your view point, your not talking for me. Posted on Mon, Jan. 30, 2006 VIewpoint/Our ocean of treasures is a legacy that we must protectBy Jim WebbThe ocean off California's coast is a national treasure, and we need to ensure that it remains healthy and protected. For more than 20 years now, I've been enjoying a seaside ritual that dates to when the first brave souls shoved off a shore and floated on the ocean for fish and a fresh look at the world. My vessel is a modern-day, 15-foot skiff slipped out at Leffingwell Landing; the experience -- breathing the salty air and seeing dolphins, whales, seals and forests of kelp teeming with fish -- is timeless. But in recent years I've come to worry about our ability to pass on this rich marine panorama to future generations of Californians. As two recent national commissions concluded, our oceans are in trouble, and the California waters are no exception. Just as we've set aside parks on land to protect our rich cultural and natural legacy, it's time we protect parts of our ocean for our children and grandchildren. The California ocean is a national treasure. It is the sky-blue backdrop for our seaside communities, Big Sur, Monterey, Morro Bay and the fantastic ribbon of Highway 1. For the scientists and fishermen who watch it up close, it is an unparalleled natural phenomenon full of life. Large underwater canyons funnel a feast of nutrients toward the surface, supporting thousands of species of invertebrate, hundreds of different kinds of birds and fish and dozens of types of mammals. It's a vast web of life that we only get a small sample of as we walk, drive and fish along the coast. Unfortunately, our vast treasure is not what it used to be. Fishermen catch less than half of what they did 25 years ago and the fish tend to be smaller. Some fish populations are only one-tenth of what they used to be. When I first started fishing, you didn't have to range anywhere near as much as you do now to find big fish. And fish are just one indication of larger problems affecting the great communities of sea life that have flourished here for so long. In some ways, our ocean is facing some of the same declines faced by oceans around the world. But we've learned a lot of lessons from the past mistakes of others, and we can put those lessons to use here to make our ocean better for future generations. One of the most important lessons we've learned is that fish and other ocean creatures need a safe haven in places where they feed and breed. They need marine protected areas -- special places where the ocean can have a break to rebuild. California is a pioneer when it comes to setting aside special places. Yosemite National Park dates to the Lincoln administration. On the coast, we've created parks that are irreplaceable, such as Point Piedras Blancas, Point Buchon and the headlands of Big Sur. The state has also been a leader in developing policies to protect our oceans, policies such as the Marine Life Protection Act. But we have precious few marine protected areas, which we need to bring back health to our ocean. We now have a special chance to preserve the waters that are the lifeblood of our ocean. A select blue ribbon task force is weighing proposals that include protection of sites where unique marine habitats are found, such as the waters off Point Piedras Blancas, Point Buchon and the Big Sur headlands. The task force will be in San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday and Wednesday to gather public input on this important undertaking. As it crafts its "preferred" alternatives, it will need to hear from residents about how important these sites are to all of us. The task force will make recommendations to the California Fish and Game Commission, which will hold hearings this summer and decide how to proceed by year's end. This may well be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity -- a chance to establish a system of marine parks here on the Central Coast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- A lifelong fisherman, Jim Webb is president of the Cambria Fishing Club. He serves as an alternative member of the Central Coast Regional Stakeholder Group set up to consider possible marine protected areas |

Harold, Darby, Bob, or Mel. I understand the Governor's Blue Ribbon MLPA Initiative Task Force will meet in the San Luis Obispo area on January 31 and February 1st and in Monterey on March 14-15. They will take public comment on the alternative MPA packages now under review. I have no other info on this, where in San Luis will they meet? what action if any is needed? It sounds like it is getting down to the wire. Carl Carl |

Thanks for all the info on Al, Cayucos and bugs. I would love to hear more. The streets here are backfilled with abalone shells 15" in diameter and 6' deep. Abalone was also a trash food for livestock. I found a book that said that more abalone came from this area, than anywhere else on earth. Millions of pounds. The Japanese worked this landing until the war broke out. They shipped the abalone back to Japan. A processing plant set here that was self sufficient. Part of the tidal electrical generator is still here, as well as the fresh water systern. But I can't find one abalone. |

General info about lobster, The old story reads when Columbus/settelers reached the U.S they would feed the poor lobster. There were counts of them washing up on the beach in 6 feet of length and 2 feet around. They were considered trash food from the ocean. Now we dive and trap only to get lucky with a 8inch tail |

Al's dive partner was Dan Beck and I think that he is still in the County. He taught me to dive in about 1970. My brother went with he and Al on many dives and they always talked about an area just north of Cayucos where there were some big bugs. They kind of kept an eye on the area as did a former DFG Captain that grew up in Cambria. |

All, I just realized the link I listed below is ran by an enviro group called "COOL" which is invloved with the marine reserves. They have the best maps I've seen on the web. I'm by no means affliated or endorsing them, so please don't flame me for the link. You can also see the proposed reserve maps on the DFG web site. |

All, I lifted this off the coastside site with thier permission. I thought everyone should be informed. In summary, the Blue Ribbon Task Force will review the 5 Central Coast proposals (i.e. anglers, environmental, and hybrid proposal, NRDC and HOPE are the other two with the HOPE proposal still being debated as to meeting the scientific guidelines of a "network"). Here is a link to the the proposed marine reserves. Highly recommend you take a look at this link! You can overlay each of the proposal, I do not know what propsal is propsed by whom. http://www.californiamarinereserves.org/pages/mapsall.html |

Tim, I would love to hear more about what you know about Al's dive shop, and the ship wreck. Who did you hear the ship wreck story from? Al? And Harrell, that was a big bug. A friend (Dennis Gumerman) in Orcut, has one mounted that I think is 20lbs. taken in Mexico freediving. |

The man that owned this house in Cayucos was a diving instructor. He and Al, that owned Al's dive shop at the pier in Cayucos were diving buddies until Al's death in '80(I'm guessing). Many of their trips originated from the landing here. I have seen the pictures of the ablone 4 and 5 layers thick, right here at this location. For you guys that don't think lobster get huge, then you just don't know. Go to the Promar hoopnet site and see what they are still harvesting down south. Or go to Mag Bay in Baja and look at the carcus piles. Some look to be about 7' long if you add the tail back. I wonder what happened to all the photos that Al had in the dive shop? Abalone, fish, lobsters, crabs, all huge. I'll ask Pete, my cement finisher, his dad bought the dive shop after Al's death. Thanks for all the info on hoop netting. |

Bugs! There are lobster above Point Conception but the further north you go the less there are. My biggest bug ever was 11 1/2 lbs that I took at shell beach. Vandenberg has some good areas and Jalama even better. Hoop netting is allowed from Point Arguello to the Mex border which is good because there are some really good areas between Arguello and Conception. Weather Permittimg ! |

Well, I'm not sure about lobster lore, but I did see with my own eyes a picture of a fellow in Shell Beach, His name was Frank, He lived behind our bookstore, the Paperback Shack, on the top of Vista Del Mar. It was a pic of him holding a lobster that he had caught on a pole and line. Frank was about 6 1/2 feet tall I'm 6 and he was holding that bug just above the carapace at shoulder level and the tail was on the ground! |

There are some huge lobster in the Cayucos area left over from a shipwreck long ago. There was a dive shop near the pier that I saw photos and got the first hand story.A ship transporting live lobster crashed into the rocks there. The water is too cold for them to reproduce, hence there are only a few huge lobster left. |

Thanks Dustin, I figured that it was too cold up here. But, I have caught barricuda and big sheephead up at Leffingwell. I did some diving off Diablo back when, and don't remember seeing any lobster. But, I wasn't looking for them, I was gathering abalone. Which were thick around Diablo. |

Sissy ... No lobsters north of Conception ... just too damn cold up here. I have had friends take Yellowtail and reported seeing bugs diving off Diablo back before 9/11 when you could get in tight to the beach. Head south for the bugs ... good luck. |

Has anyone caught any lobsters in the Cayucos area? The guy that I bought this house from was an avid diver and he said he has seen lobsters in this area. (But, he also told me the roof didn't leak) Does anyone hoopnet this area? |

I just happened to stop by the Tackle Warehouse while in SLO yesterday and they have the red colored Berkeley Gulp Worms. They only have about 30 packs left, so if you want any you had better hurry! Cost is about 5 bucks for a pack of 10. Pura Vida, Paul Boe |

Just wanted to thank Mel, Harold, Darby and the rest of Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition (CCFCC)for support in the Coastside law suit. For those not in the know, so called enviromental groups are trying the backdoor and are trying to fund the MLPA process, talk about hijacking a system. Coastside has filed a law suit to stop them. |

Anyone need a merc 260 top half? Recently rebuilt. Bottom end may be salvageable. I could use about $125.00 for beer and bait. Efren from "THE BOAT" 925-3544 |

Met Paul at one of my favorite fishing holes yesterday, fishing was great as was the catching, the surf was a little nasty but managable, we did not know it but right behind us in the sand lay an elephant seal, ranger came dow and chastised us for being there , only one sign way up the beach , we did not bother him and he never moved, I guess i got just as must right to the beach as he does ,UNLESS he gets pushy , then he can have it. Anyway them barries are biting and they are good size, I also heard thru the vine that tackle warehouse does not have them bloody sand worms anymore , you can buy them from CABELAS,saltwater catalog page 85. The surf is going to be high the rest of the week , but next week looks good. Blackie/Sr |

Bob Hather thanks for the public recogntion; which is nice but not the goal. I would have added another "zero" and moved the decimal point right if I could. It's bad timing tho with taxes Jan 17th and 4/15 looming. My message is this.... WAKE UP FISHERFOLK: There are two simple factors in the democratic process: INVOLVEMENT and MONEY (and not necessarily in that order). The interest group expending the most near always wins. Go to your checkbook *right now* and support the cause-or suffer the consequences. Cloud out. |

Thanks for the input on Alaska fishing. And the 2000 Yamaha 15hp should be worth $1500 don't you think? It's always been stored indoors, as is the Sissy. It probably has about 60 hours. Maybe a little more. The Cannon Uni-trols should be worth $150 each with the bases. Too high? John |

Greetings, Just returned from 4 weeks in Baja. Camped between San Lucas Cove and Conception Bay the whole time. Had about 12 days of wind, but spent those days in Conception Bay where we could still fish. Fishing was actually good in Conception Bay for nonstop action on nice sierra, some quality triggers, a few snappers, and a handful of small roosterfish! Spent the nice days either out at Punta Chivato or Dos Amigos (San Lucas Cove). Hooked @ 30 YT in about 10 days of fishing and landed about 1/2 of those. All fish were between 25-35 pounds. Did some great whale watching in Scammon's Lagoon and lots of bird watching with some friends from Oregon. Fantastic trip. I'll post pics when I get them downloaded and reduced. Email me if you are interested in more info. Best fishes, steve |
