Good news came from Western River on Kangaroo Island, where charter operator Gavin Solly made the most of better sea conditions on Monday.

His customers boated 30 nannygai, 15 snapper, eight trevally to more than 2kg and five large whiting.

Whiting numbers right along the island's north coast are expected to improve during June.

The mouth of the Western River has recently burst open and bream are expected to move in shortly.

There are still whiting at Emu and Smith bays but crews are now working harder for smaller catches of up to two dozen an outing. Others were caught along the spit in Shoal Bay, while Kingscote jetty provided a few squid and whiting.

North coast beaches turned on plenty of mullet and occasional school mulloway have been caught on pilchards from Emu Bay jetty. Mullet are also active along south coast beaches where salmon schools are on the move and not always easily located.

Beach anglers are faring well along the south coast. Dave Whitney fished at D'Estrees Bay for whiting, flathead and trevally, there were also large schools of mullet in the area. Mullet are in good numbers along the north coast beaches.

Whiting can be found on the north coast, particularly Stokes Bay and Middle River.

Salmon are at Pennington and Hanson bays, also from the beach and occasionally from the jetty at Vivonne

Professionals have reported big schools of bluefin tuna between Vivonne Bay and Cape Du Couedic but with no suitable launching facilities in the area, they remain beyond the reach of recreational anglers.

Recent bad weather has allowed little boat fishing along the north coast but those who could get out on the water reported bag limit whiting catches in Smith and Emu bays.

The island's many rivers should now be yielding good catches of bream, following rain.

While the north coast has been good for whiting from Emu Bay to Stokes Bay, snapper have gone very quiet along the same stretch.

Kingscote has whiting at the spit and Red Banks while the jetty produced mainly tommies, squid and whiting.

Penneshaw jetty turned on salmon action while the adjacent breakwater offered salmon and whiting.

Pennington and Vivonne Bay were quiet for salmon but visitors had little trouble catching a good feed of mullet, tommies and salmon trout.

More than 200 top club anglers from across Australia have been competing in the National Anglers Association's National Championships on Kangaroo
Island.

Erratic weather forced some events to be rescheduled but our SA team was well placed to take out the event overall.

Catches have included mullet, tommies, big garfish and a few salmon from D'Estrees Bay and Hanson Bay.

The north coast has provided good boat catches of mackerel and large whiting, including a 1.3kg whopper landed by Scott Doyle.

Salmon were boated between Stokes Bay and Snellings Beach, while big snook were active in Smith Bay.

Monday's estuary event at American River resulted in mixed bags of large tommies, garfish and whiting, with young Victorian angler Kyle Pettie also catching six flathead to 1.3kg.

Wind permitting, Shoal Bay has whiting behind the spit and Red Banks where garfish and snook can also be found.

Locals caught some good snapper at Cape Cassini.
