Gamefishing bonanza at Flinders Isand
Although St. Helens is known as the gamefishing capital of Tasmania the limelight has been stolen by Flinders island 60 nautical miles to the north.
The inaugural Rivieria Fishing Classic has kicked off in scintillating fashion. On an unbelievable first day of action 23 striped marlin were hooked by just eight boats and five were landed and one tagged and released.
One boat, had a quadruple hook up which is undoubtedly a first for Tasmania.
With the eastern Australian current pushing down past St. helens at an amazing 21.8 degrees, combined with huge schools of bait, St.Helens gamefishers are optimistic that the marlin will create an extra special tournament for the St. Helens gamefishing classic. Given that the northern boundary for the classic is the centre of Banks Strait it would seem likely that the gameboats will be heading north on the weekend.
More on St. Helens
In the last week there has been several captures of yellowfin tuna to 14kgs, plus mako sharks approaching 200kgs.
Great Fishing

Subject: St. Helens Gamefishing Hots Up!
Since the 18th of January albacore catches have been very consistantly good with fish ranging is size from 3 to 6 kg with the occassional fish to 10 kg.
Striped tuna have arrived which is usually a sign that the larger yellowfin and striped Marlin are about. On the 26th Jan, a 30kg yellowfin tuna was hooked and landed by a recreational boat on the shelf east of St. Helens. Several striped marlin have been sighted with 2 or 3 reported strikes where the marlin was not hooked up. The last recorded marlin sighting was on the 28th January over the continental shelf east of St. Helens.
The warm currents and bait schools have moved closer to shore which produced very good albacore catches only 5 mile from shore on the weekend of the 20th/21st January. Sea surface temperatures are 19.3 degrees on the shelf and 18.2 degrees inshore, however this does vary day to day. Recent charter trips I have detected bait schools on the surface being worked heavily by seals and dolphins.
The next two weeks should see the arrival and capture of some of the larger pelagic gamefish such as the yellowfin tuna. Several mako sharks have been landed over the past week. A recent few days of cloudy overcast weather has produced very good surface lure trolling conditions and we are looking forward to some more settled weather and great gamefishing. Catches of albacore tuna have been very good off St. Helens we have been on the water on charter nearly everyday utilising our 2 charter vessels Adosinda ll our 24foot sharkcat and Saltshaker our 35foot flybrigdge sportfisher. Since Dec 28th after the last bout of bad weather water temperatures have been steadily climbing where at present current sea surface temperture is 17.6 degrees inshore and 19.5 degrees on the edge of the continental shelf. The past five days has seen some cloudy weather which has bought bait fish to the surface and in turn has produced terrific surface trolling conditions. Albacore sizes have ranged from 3kg to 6kg. These albacore have started to move inshore but the greatest concentration is on and over the continetal shelf.
Larges catches over the past week has resulted in many fish being released. Regards Rocky and Angela |

Helens sportfishing Recent good catches of Blue eye trevalla, Hapuka, Gemfish, this deepsea fishing is just starting to fish very well with large concentrations of feed at depth over the continental shelf.
Striped trumpeter and silver morwong fishing well inshore-all good signs for oncoming gamefishing season with water tempertures rising and just on 15 degrees celscious. mako sharks are already showing up and the albacore tuna willnot be far away. Regards Angela on behalf of Rocky Carosi |

Apart from the odd Mako the game fish season has come to an end and the focus is now on reef fishing. Plenty of Morwong and some good Striped Trumpeter have been taken on the inner reefs and when the seas are flat the shelf has been fishing real well for Trevalla and Hapuka. In Georges Bay there has been plenty of Garfish, Salmon and Trevally so there has been plenty of action for the boating anglers. 460lb Mako Shark
