Hello again, Last week I shared a question, how does the DFG. know where the fish come from? My buddy ansewered from Montery. The fish counters at the dock. What will they to our fishing if one of these fish with no Atapost fin are turned in and it is from the Klamoth, river this year? Our solution, look the fish over really good before putting it in the net, if it has no fin let it go, they are not counting them as natural spawners, then when it spawns the next generation will be born with the fin. The rules say we cannot cut the heads off or clean fish on our boats or in the water. They do not say we cannot let them go. Best regards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ. |

Hello Everyone, No punt intended, if anyone of our crew has to ask if a Salmon, is of legal limit? We let it go, a 20 inch Salmon, weight will be about 4 to 5 pounds average. Our net man looks the fish over and decides while still in the water. If you pull the Salmon, up along side the boat they will be thrashing and rolling, slide your hand down the line to the flasher or just in front of the bait or spoon, swim the fish for a few moments and they will calm down, this is when we slide the hook out of there mounth and let them go. The commercial fisherman slide a gaff down the line to the hook and they come off. Talking with the fish and game and the biologist, they say if you take any of the slim off the body you are stripping their wet suit off , not to mention putting them in the net handeling them and stripping of scales. At this point you are turning a fish loose that will die of hypothermia. Best reards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ. PS. If the small the fish are bleeding from the mouth or gills we take them. |

If you tap the salmon on the head u will knock it out, then u can pull the gill, and the fish won't thrash around and bruise the meat. Some commercials actually stun the fish while it's still in the water before gaffing. You'll have better quality and no messy blood everywhere. Tight Lines Jocelyn |

Josh, as soon as you get the fish out of the net and you know it's a legal salmon to keep, reach under the gill plate grab hold of the gills and yank..I have a bleed box...They will flop around and blood can get all over so I just shut the lid on the cooler (kill box)..You can then rinse the fish and clean up the mess....As soon as posible...Gut, including the blood line, and gill..There is a knife with a spoon on it for the bloodline I just use an salmon spoon if I need it...Now, belly ice the fish and put it in the fish box, Different from the kill box..Hope this helps....John |

I trolled around a little today. A couple hours, not too far from the entrance. No biters. I will try again tomorrow, maybe radar bouy area. Saw some bait that was pushed up, water is murky light green. FYI: I don't use hooks until the 1st. |

Ice first or no ice, hot fish or not. The most important thing with any kind of fish you are taking. First thing is bleeeding them, especially if they are still pumping, I mean there heart is still pumping. The quality of meat is at least 90% cleaner and whiter. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ PS. A few years ago started long range fishing, the friend who took me along has been doing this for over 25 years. He and I talked about it, he thought it did not make a difference. At the end of our 5 day I cut the gills on every fish I caught, he did not. The crew was upset at me for making a bloody mess on there decks and sounded me about it. When all was said and done, the fish dividing was between blood tanited tuna or fresh looking rainbow white tuna. Nothing else needed be said between us. From that trip forward he cut the gills while the heart was still pumping. |

Good point swordman. I knew that tuna "ran hot" but did nor realize that salmon did also. The point is that all fish should be iced immediately after being caught for optimum freshness and flavor. Let's pack those ice chests next week with bright kings! Will |

correction, salmon, tuna and swordfish do not "come out of the water" at sea temp. They have such a high metabolic rate that their internal organs are a higher temp, thus susceptable to "belly burn" which can seriously impact the flesh (salmon and swords especially). Please note that comm salmon and swords gill, gut and pack in ice immedialtely.. former swordman |

Always better to put any fish on ice if you want the best quality eating. Salmon come out of the ocean at the current ocean temperature, which is in the low to mid 50s, which is cool, so they will last OK in the hold, but icing them down is the best bet. Albacore, on the other hand must be iced to maintain the best eating. Will |

how do they use the data when four or five anglers on a boat come in with only a couple rock fish? or no salmon. times that by 10 or 12 boats its not a good picture when it comes to fish counts. i see them write info like that down. do they figure this as declining fish stocks? i tend to think the checker could be a double edge sword..... |

Mike: Excellent points! Garbage in - Garbage out. Without good data, the regulators will, by law, fall back on the "precautionary approach," meaning they will be more restrictive than really necessary. Sound fishery management relies on good data. It's all about stock assessment. Not only is your example about canaries spot-on, on the flip side if year after year the fish counters are showing healthy fish populations by their counts, then that helps to prove that things are healthy and not in need of drastic measures. So please guys and gals, give the scientists and statiticians what they need. Otherwise, they will have to make it up from bad data. Eric Endersby |

Fish Checkers: CRFS To all you who think not giving up your salmon heads to the fish checkers at the dock, BAD IDEA!!!! Why? Because if DFG doesn't get up to date data they can ONLY use the data available!!! Which means, they have to use the data that is shutting down Monterey to Astoria, OR! WE NEED TO PROVE THEM WRONG! IF Monterey Bay has so few Klamath fish (as I think) Then we need to give up every adiposed clipped fish head we can to PROVE THEM WRONG!! Same thing for rockcod, if we don't give them good information, then they have to use the information they get. So, if 1 guy out of 10 shows the checker his fish and there is say 5 Canary RF, then gues what...they apply that idiot's Canary catch to ALL THE ANGLERS!!! Making it seem as if we catch the wrong fish all the time!! Just a thought, a buddy of mine was a fish checker, and got lots of grief. Get real, how many of us have jobs where he gets yelled at or bad mouthed by everyone he sees. It's not the fish checker who's doing this, it's the dumb!#!$#! statisticians!!! |

ANNOUNCEMENT: Mark's Marine has agreed to Salmon Petition at his store on W. Betteravia in Santa Maria. North SB County fishers Please take a moment to go by and sign it if haven't already done. The PFMC could close our season at any time and this is your chance to voice that they don't. I will personally ensure it gets to the right place at the right time. Will, been a supporter of CCSE for a long time--since Cleveland was the Biologist. Most fun I ever had was netting (big!) spawners in SLO Creek right there between the golf course bridges. To bad those days are gone. Connie might remember me. Was intrumental in getting a sizeable settlement donated to CCSE couple years back. I'll just put this latest check in the mail today. It's not much now but maybe more after taxes. Cloud out. |

Had a great time at the salmon seminar/dinner and came away with some good things to implement. Sure appreciate all the work that went into setting it up and that the money is going to a good cause. Looking at stuff and talking to a guy there and found out his son-in-law worked on the CG ship I was on in Coos Bay, OR in the late 70's. It truly is a small world. I think the name was Harold Franklin in Paso Robles, and if you read this please e-mail me so we can hook up with fishing and etc. |

I wanted to say thank you to everyone involved in the salmon seminar my son and I had a blast. The food was outstanding. It definetly opened my eyes and showed me that I need to be more involved. My son who is only 11 had a great time and also wants to do what ever possible to help. It was great to put some faces with names. My son wanted me to add he was the kid walking around with the mohawk. It may just be me but I felt a little note a little sorry for the DFG guy at the seminar. Maybe he just got thrown into it but after his presintation people seemed more confused than ever. I noticed when the floor opened for questions the guy started to sweat and studder. Just my observation I could be wrong. Thanx again guys for the seminar my family is going to make it a tradition from now on keep up the outstanding work. Eric: great presintation my son enjoyed your story about the whale he wants to share it with his class on Mon. Andrew |

Sissy, I don't know if location is important to you but I have a guy down here in Arroyo Grande that does that work. He does a pretty good job too, I've had him build 5 or 6 Calstars and he's currently working on a couple new Seekers I bought at Fred Hall. He does a lot of re-wraps for Patriots boat rods and used to do a lot of work for Bob's Tackle Too when they were in business down here in So. County. Drop me a line if you want his number. Re: Salmon Seminar I'm really bummed that we didn't make it. We planned to be there but something came up late in the day that prevented the run to Morro Bay. Glad to hear it was a success. |

Thanks to all those involved in the seminar last night, it was a great event. Nice to put some faces with the names from this board. We especially enjoyed Eric's discussion regarding some safety issues, we will be implementing many of those suggestions. We are proud to support the enhancement program and officially joined last night. Bob, thanks for the update, I just sent another email! Dan, thanks for the effort. Everyone, it has never been easier for you to help when your help is most needed. The letters are written, all you have to do is put stamps on them. Just a note to say how great last night's salmon seminar was. Thank you to all that put it together and made it happen. My wife and I got to meet allot of you guys and had a ball. It takes great effort to support our fisheries and we appreciate it. Thanks to Michele, Will, Joe, Bob, Eric, and all the rest of you that worked so hard. Another note: I think that some people make comments on the here, not really knowing the facts. I know that in the past, I have been one of them. I have to assume that the recent comments about Mel are from such a person. The guy just doesn't know the facts. Fishing: Has anyone used those halibut spreader bars for bounce balling halibut? Tell me about it. John |

A big "THANK YOU" to all the fishermen who showed up at the salmon seminar last night. We were blown away by all the people. Central Coast Salmon Enhancement will benefit from the money raised from all of you who bought BBQ tickets, raffle tickets, and who participated in the auctions. We hope many of you will join our organization and together we can continue to make salmon fishing off the Central Coast a quality experience. If you need more info, email me at willbateman@sbcglobal.net. Thanks again. Will |

I sent another letter to the Governor today urging him to renominate Jim Kellogg. In it I asked what the status of the process was. I was surprised that within a few hours I got an answer from Alice Dowdin that they were anticipating a decision within a week. I got an answer...on a SATURDAY! The answer came via Alice's Blackberry! That tells me three important things. One, they're READING the letters. Two, there aren't so many letters coming in that they can't answer them. And three, it isn't too late to write. Based on that, I would like to ask that more of you write, and the ones who HAVE written, please write again and ask what's going on. Who knows? Maybe a continued show of concern and interest will carry the day. It certainly can't hurt. I think that that is the difference between what WE can produce and what the enviros produce. WE are passionate about the resource and our love for the ocean, and we can turn that passion into action. They are paid advocates who generate a lot of form letters. People, don't forget, Kellogg's presence on the Commission is pivotal. There are some HUGE decisions coming this year that will make or break our future fishing opportunities. If you love fishing, show it by writing a letter. Please don't give up. Write if you haven't. Write again if you have. The email address once again is alice.dowdin@gov.ca.gov Thank you for putting up with my haranguing. Bob Humphrey Central California Council of Dive Clubs |

BBQ; I think the Klamath salmon that are the big issue are the natural fish, not hatchery fish, so they would not have a coded wire. You have a good point though because if there is some way for them to know how many Klamath kings are caught in our area they would certainly use it to shut us down. Anybody know how they estimate the Klamath salmon caught in our area ? |

Mel: I'm not sure that thanks to DFG are in order for the salmon season being open north of Sur. I found out Friday that it was simply because DFG had not done the proper and legal notice period to close it. It was a technicality. Don't hold your breath that it will stay open. Eric Endersby |

I Think it's great that Mel is trying to help. There are many people doing much work on rockcod season, MLPA, salmon season, etc. It certainly doesn't stop with Mel. You are mistaken if you think that the only reason we have a rockfish season is because of him. |

Hey Gopher, The reason we have any rockcod fishing at all at this point is because of the tenatious efforts of Mel,and the "Right to fish group".He is the driving force against the restrictions and regulations we face every day now it seems. The CCFCC and Mel sued the DFG and won, but also was able to recover our Attorney's fees... $10,000 . That's a first in California history! Mr. Gopher you have no idea what your talking about and an apology to Mel is in order...especially for something as trivial as the time of a meeting being incorrect. Bloody Decks Forever!! |

Sissy, I agree, having different fishing clubs for different areas may be Ok, but we should at least have a mothership, like RFA or United Anglers of (America). When each fishing club gets a surplus of money it could go to them. |

Hello Everyone, The last few weeks I have been wondering how the DFG, gets the fish counting information they use to decide where to shut the state down. Yesterday a local Salmon fisherman gave call from Montery. He asked how many fish we turned in to the DFG, missing the Atapost Fin? We have turned in at least 10-25 in the last 3 seasons. The DFG, persons at the dock who know our boats and us by our first name, the ones that have been telling us they are helping us to keep the seasons open. Well think of this, if any of us turn in 1 fish and the tag is from the Klamouth River. What new rules will they impose on us next yeat? Are they really trying to help use this information, we provide to them to keep the season open or will they use it against us like they are trying due this season to the Montery, and Norhtern Cal. guys? Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. |

I talked to Joe Anderton today and meant to ask him if tickets to the seminar tomorrow night are available at the door. We got carried away talking about fishing and I forgot to ask. Are the tickets going to be available at the door? And, I have been thinking about a physical showing of our position for some time now. I think blueboat may have a good idea. They can delete our emails or trash our letters, but it is hard to ignore a march on the capital. We could possibly get some good press from it also. Crazy idea? Count all the affected businesses, commercials, sporties, and others. Organization. I have been approached by different fishing organizations for donations. My wife and I joined a club at an LA boat show just to find out that we had contributed to the wrong cause. Wouldn't it be better if we could get all the fishing rights clubs to unite? You know, divided we fall? Anyone got anything to say about this? |

Or, you can attend our big fundraiser dinner on April 8, 2006 at 6 pm at the Morro Bay Community Center. It will be a fabulous fish fry dinner and Sharon Rowley has promised to again supply us with her spectacular desserts. Drinks are complimentary. Friends: Be aware of upcoming events: 1. This Saturday (March 18) at Vets Bldg in Morro Bay will be salmon clinic ... auction, etc and dinner. I think it is sponsored by Virg's. 2. Brandt Dinner on April 1st. I am going to the dinner ... but can't remember right now where it is being held... 3. Central Coast Fisheries Conservation Coalition fundraiser dinner on April 8 at 6 p.m. I now have tickets and will get them out to our directors, Virg's, Patriot Sportfishing, Four Season's Outfitters. I will make sure someone is selling tickets at the Vets Bldg on Saturday and at the Brandt dinner on April 1. Hey guys ... I think we owe a vote of thanks to the CDFG. They stood up to the Feds and said they were going to open salmon season as planned in California on April 1 for recreational fishing ... even though feds told them not to. Mel |

After seeing this closure unfold I felt like I needed to vent a little myself. This whole scenario reminds me of some of life experiences I have seen in the past. First one that comes to mind was the spotted owl. It seems ironic that after we get our local domestic loggers run out of business the issues seems to have disappeared from the front page. Now we have a handful of giant logging companies or importers running the show and setting prices on all of these new houses that are going up all over the country. By the way every one of the new homes is going to require about 320,000 gallons annually. Then comes water issue I am seeing a lot press and email trying to pit the farmer against the fisherman it’s called divide and conquer. In trying to keep this short and not repeating all the dry stats I can tell you that the fisherman and the metropolitan water districts up and down the state are tapped into the spicket that starts from the very North end of the state. No I am not a farmer but I farm the farmer meaning we do commercial harvesting and work for various ranches from Los banos to the North, the East side of Tulare. They all have first and last names all live on ranch or in their local town not corporate offices. Back in the 90’s we had a left wing politician that decided to take away the majority of the water sold to the farmers with interest, not subsidizes as some try to imply. After years of major water cuts lawsuits and, in my opinion the turning point was the trip to Sacramento with about 50 to 75 buses to the capitol in a peaceful demonstrations with all the news media. The camera can be a politician’s best friend or his worst enemy. Farming is my lively hood but fishing is my life. Like all things in life moderation seems to be the best approach. It is my opinion the bulk of the farmers would have gone by the way of the logger if that caravan of buses had not rolled into Sacramento. After the dust settled the farmers came out beaten but not broke. Lets hope we don’t have to rely on China for our food. Back when we fished the Sacramento River we would put in at Red Bluff and I got to view the fish ladder at the dam {there is that nasty word} and its works very well for the fish going to Battle Creek to spawn, there are solutions. Fishing out of Monterey as well as Moro Bay I can say the fishing for Salmon and Rock fish is the best it has been for our family in the last five years {Go Figure}. Melvin where can we send donations for the Rock fish cause Sincerely Bill Son |

Gentleman, It’s time to launch phase two of our save the salmon fishery campaign. We must now all rise up in one unified voice to be heard all the way to Washington DC. If we don’t turn this thing around we will become an endangered species. The effort will shift to rockfish and the end result could be a total collapse of our fishery. The economics of this nightmare has the potential to destroy an industry. There can be no solders on the bench we must all arm our self with the power of numbers. I ask you to look at the links provided and send a fax, an e-mail, or a phone call or better yet all three. Have your friend and neighbors get involved. The following names are the target - it’s time they hear from their continuants. Below is a sample letter that can be used for guidance. This letter can be faxed and emailed with your signatures to the people below. Do not forget to contact your state and federal representatives – especially your local Congressional Representative. For more information about the Klamath salmon issue see the Coastside Salmon Brochure: http://home.comcast.net/~lyndaabbott/Klamath.pdf We are urging all of you to FAX, EMAIL and PHONE all of these people as often as you can. Writing letters is not as important due to the delay in receiving written mail (security issues cause mail to take upwards of three weeks) so we need everybody to use the above methods first. If possible, do all of the above several times! Let your voice be heard President George W. Respectfully Bob Franko ______________________________________ Here is a copy of the Sample Fax Form _______________________________________ Date: To: Email: Fax: Re: California Ocean Salmon Fishery Crisis In the strongest possible terms, with the utmost urgency, and on behalf of my friends and family, I urge you to immediately become involved in the California Salmon management crisis. California recreational anglers are facing an impendi! ng socio economic disaster and we urgently need your assistance to avert a situation that will in all likelihood mark the end of saltwater fishing in this great state. We urge you to: 1. Avoid an economic disaster in California and demand that the Pacific Fishery Management Counsel (PFMC) and the National Marine Fishery Service (NMFS) adopt ‘Option 1’ for a reasonable harvest of Salmon in the ocean at their April 2006 meeting. 2. Salmon Grow Where Water Flows! In the long-term, we urge you to demand a balanced management plan for the Klamath River that fully recognizes the need for a healthy river with adequate cold, clean water flow timed to support healthy runs of returning and out-migrating salmon. My friends, family and I have enjoyed the pleasures and benefits of our Salmon fishery for many years here in California. Our California Salmon fishery is world class and provides a valuable recreational opportunity for the citizens of California and for visiting tourists from other states. Salmon are a valuable, sustainable and renewable resource, providing in addition to recreation, valuable tourist trade and commercial opportunities. They are one of California’s most valuable resources and must be protected. Saltwater recreational fishing in California contributes $1.7 billion to the local economy, nearly $500 million in jobs, and over $125 million in fuel and sales tax. The recreational opportunity for families to enjoy the California outdoors is priceless and can not be quantified in economic loss. Our Salmon fishery is too important to lose. Regrettably, and due to a failed federal policy, there is a problem with the fresh water habitat for salmon on the Klamath River. Recall the 2002 fish-kill on the Klamath, which resulted in the loss of 60,000-70,000 adult Chinook salmon. We must take care of the fresh water environment that salmon depend on to spawn, and for the initial lives of the young while transiting to the ocean. Currently the Fe! deral ma nagement of water in the Klamath River is having a severe adverse impact on the ocean salmon fishery extending from below Monterey to as far north as the Columbia River in Oregon. Inadequate flows have caused the river to become too warm which has resulted in deadly parasites which kill 80 to 90 percent of newly spawned Salmon. The Klamath in-river conditions are solely responsible for current plight of Klamath River Salmon. All parties involved agree that FISHING IS NOT THE PROBLEM, yet the fishermen, both recreational and commercial, are being told they will shoulder the entire burden of this failed federal policy! We request that you support the PFMC and NOAA in adopting an emergency action to allow some harvest of the abundant Sacramento River Chinook. On average, recreational anglers catch only 4 Klamath River salmon for every 1000 Central Valley Chinook! The PFMC and California Department of Fish and Game estimate that approximately 25,000-30,000 natural spawning Klamath salmon will return to the Klamath River this year. If fishing under 2005 regulations it is estimated that this effort would result in the harvest of only 270 of these natural spawners in the region south of the Klamath Management Zone! Closing the recreational salmon season over 0.5% of the Klamath natural spawner run is not justified in any economic or resource management model. We urge you in the strongest possible terms to act in the best interests of the citizens of California and support OPTION 1 in front the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Please get involved now and help the people of California avert a pending disaster to one of our most cherished resources. Tired of changing gears .... downshift, upshift ... now back in 5th gear and heading to Moss. Looking forward to it Dave ... Anyone else heading to Moss make sure to drop by the "Graylight" or "MyThreeSons" safety meeting area ... fun to be had by all. As for donated Items .... I will attempt to get over to Harrolds and hand him a Gift Certificate to DesJardins Day Spa. Let some of you guys have a chance to win the wife a massage, facial etc. Then again ..... after a few days on the water dragging salmon gear, maybe some of the old bones around here could use that massage. |
