Had a good opener out of Morro. Caught a double at 6:15 a.m. and the bite slowed down. Came back towards the entrance bouy in 75 feet of water where bait was thick and caught two more at 12:30 up to 16 lbs. for three of us. Best bait in Morro in a while. Had about six greenbacks in the shallows that were chasing the chovies. Got boarded by tagnosnazi and crew but they were very professional today which was nice. Fish came on green hotchie, watermelon apex and two on the white croc. May be a good season from the looks of it! |

Kelly and I had a great day aboard "Hook Up" with Captian Larry and First Mate Connie. Started the day with a double and ended with a triple. The big challenge was landing them in the boat, who thought of barbless hooks? Any hooo had a great opening day with three in the box, try it again tomorrow. |

Morro Bay had a good bite early as there was one boat with his four fish headed home when we got on the water. The bait balls were as thick as I'v seen and there weren't any sealions. The main bite was right in front of the rock in 120-170 feet of water. We got six fish 10-12 lbs dressed. Some boats did get skunked however but most had a good day. Bob Hather |

Good job Will, I'm glad you got 'em. Now we know there are fish around. We got 1 at the last second right at the entrance buoy. Headed back out for sundowner. 12 lbs. Caster can tell you what it was caught on. |

Boy was that fun! We limited out of Morro Bay before 9:00 AM. First fish came on the first drop as 6:45 AM. I just set the drag on th first rod and it went off. That's the way to start the day! We had three nice fish to 16lbs. before 7:00 AM and then had to wait a while for number four. First three came on a pearl/green Apex at 65 feet deep and the last one hit a very small green hootchie at 80 feet. What a blast. Perfect day! Will |

Here is some good news ! Appears as though Jim Kellogg has been reappointed to the Fish and Game Commission! This is very good news. Jim Kellogg was appointed to the Commission on January 31, 2002, to complete the term of the position vacated by former Commissioner Richard Thieriot. He was reappointed on March 28, 2006 to a six year term. Growing up in the Bay Area James W. Kellogg is a native Californian who has spent thirty eight years with the (UA) United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada. He has been recognized many times over for his leadership abilities and has gained the respect and admiration of everyone who has had the opportunity to interface with him. In 1992, Jim went to work for the International and currently is the International Representative in charge of California and Hawaiian Islands for the UA. He is a strong supporter of education and heavily promotes union apprenticeship and journeyman training programs and has been rewarded for those efforts by having two schools in Northern California named after him. He is the founder of the California Native American Apprenticeship Initiative. After years of community service and serving on many statewide labor boards and committees, Jim in January 1999 was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to the powerful California Transportation Commission and served as Chairman in 2000. He has also been appointed by Governor Davis to the California Fish and Game Commission, the Commission on Building for the 21st Century, and the California State Work Force Investment Board. He serves on the Board of Directors for the California Residence Foundation, Board of Directors Contra Costa College Foundation, Board of Directors for the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America, Board of Directors for the America on the Move Foundation, and is the labor representative on the oversight committee for Contra Costa County's "Shaping Our Future" project. Eric, Great heads-up on the ASA's web site. Finally someone has developed a great network to get the word out in the easiest possible way. I've seen similar ideas but not that simple! I've been sending letters throughout this whole ordeal but ASA really made it easy. I'm going to spread this link around. |

Got Bait ?? I just got back from putting my boat on a mooring at Avila. We spent about an hour looking for bait and the good news is : Saw more bait in thirty minutes than we saw all of last year ! The bait was in 90-150 ft of water from the lighthouse to the redlite The ocean was dead calm with a little swell. You couldn't ask for better conditions. I think tomorrow and sunday will be the same. Let's hope the bait means the salmon are there also. We'll know tomorrow. |

Here's a very quick and easy way to send letters to those that matter and help save the salmon season. http://capwiz.com/asafish/issues/alert/?alertid=8638771&type=ML All you need to do is enter your zip code and it will send an email to all your local reps. |

NW 10 kts. wind wave 2 ft. or less. NW swell 7-9 ft. at 13 seconds. This means we will probably have 5.5 ft. swell at 10-12 seconds and either less than 10 kts. of wind, or more than 30kt. of wind. Will is right Diablo weather is most reliable Water temp. locally is 53.6 degrees. |

Water should be good. Check the Diablo Weather Report above for swell size. It is not the swell size that is a problem (usually) but the swell period and the wind speed. Make sure you have a boat that is made for the ocean. Morro Bay seems to eat up lake boats. Will |

For those of you who are still confused about salmon closures (you know who you are). CA. DFG news states: In southern California the recreational salmon fishery below Pt. Sur will open on April 1 in federal and state waters. If you're still not sure, maybe you shouldn't go fishing, just to be on the safe side. Dave, mooching is like halibut fishing in mid-water. Check hook regulations. E-mail me if you want to come out sometime. Tomorrow, might go out for an hour, you're welcome go. |

All of the bait I saw today was north of the rock. I went over some areas that looked better than most of last year, as far as the way the bait metered. No hooks in the water, so I can't tell you if we got bit or not. I'm a little more hopeful after today. |

Friends: It is important that we have an accurate idea about how many people will be at our big fundraiser dinner on April 8th (so we can plan the food). So, please go to Virg's or Four Seasons and buy tickets. Or, call me on the phone at 544-2424 and let me know how many tickets you will need. Sure, we will sell tickets at the door, but if we sell out ... we would hate to turn people away at the door. April 8th at 6 p.m. at the Morro Bay Community Center, $35 per ticket (includes CCFCC membership), great auction, raffle, door prize. Fish-Fry with free drinks. Sharon Rowley will again have an array of great desserts. If you call my office and get an answering maching (I might be out salmon fishing), leave a detailed message. Mel de la Motte |

Weather; The UCAR computer models also show that sat-sun look pretty good now. The crappy weather has moved to monday and most of next week. The wind will probably be from the east sat/sun and not very strong. We'll see what John Lindsey (PG&E) says this evening. Josh; If the weather forecast holds it is my plan to put my boat on a mooring at Avila friday and scout a little bit for bait first. I have heard a couple reports that there is bait at both Avila & Morro. Don't know how much. I wlll probably check the area from the white light to a little below the red light. Might even put some hookless gear in the water. |

Weather is a fickle thing these days, but Accuweather is showing a break from rain on Saturday with winds not all that bad. Sure hope that is right. Probably be out at Morro Bay regardless. All this runoff should be good for the bait and water conditions. See you all there. Will |

A couple more items: Drew; you are right most of Monterey bay is in state waters but the fish can be and often are in federal waters. I ask warden Dennis McKiver (he has a web page on Coastside) if it is ok to bring back into Monterey salmon that are caught below Pt. Sur if the area above Pt. Sur is closed. His answer was yes as long as no lines are in the water in the closed area. |

Weather; I was hoping for better forecasts today but instead they got worse. Saturday looks like rain, wind & swell both here and Monterey. |

I thought that Monterey Bay was considered state waters? Could be wrong though. |

Salmon opener, if you are planning to tow down to moss or monterey this weekend for the opener there will be a minus tide at app. 6.30 a.m. which makes monterey real hard to launch. Be prepaired to be boarded and inspected for all the safty gear and licenses, which every boater should have anyway. But they will ask to see your flares, make sure they arent out dated. Good luck all and be safe, Den |

A note of caution for anybody fishing Moss for salmon. Be sure that you know where the 3 mile line is drawn. You really don't want a ticket from the feds ! The coast guard, NOAA and CF&G can all write tickets. I hear that the feds can fine you as much as $10,000 for fishing in a closed area. Todd at Bayside has maps with the 3 mile line on it. |

FYI-the Fish and Game is required to give us a 10 day notice if they shut an area down. So the earliest would be 10 days from the close of the meeting on April 7th. |

Please notice the link at the top of the page--Heal the Klamath Save our Salmon Season. Lynda Abbott has made it very easy for anyone to be heard & oppose closure of the salmon season. Let's not forget the feds could shut us down in a heartbeat. Cloud out |

Weekend weather for the opener; The forecasts and the computer models are not looking all that great. It is forecast to rain friday night but saturday should be ok untill the afternoon when the wind comes up. It will probably be windy sunday-tuesday but most of the time our mornings are calm . I usually put my boat on a mooring at Avila on friday but won't this time if it is going to rain on it all night. Will see if the forecasts change for the better later in the week. |

For salmon I use an 8'-6" graphite steelhead rod rated at 12 to 20 lb test line. (Cabelas has them: Fish Eagle Graphite) The reel is a Shimano Triton 100 levelwind with 25 lb Maxima Ultragreen line. I prefer a chrome 8" dodger for trolling with a green/chrome Apex about 30" behind the dodger. I troll about 3.5 mph. If they are there, this is usually the hot setup. These rods would work well for mooching also, but I don't try that often. Go get'um. Will |

Fishmaster110, Thanks for the photos. What is the best anti-sieze compound out there for stainless to stainless, and aluminum to stainless bolt ups? Some compounds are not good for aluminum. |

Correction: You CAN gill and gut a legal salmon at sea, as well you should do (see posts about bleeding, etc.) You cannot decapitate it or fillet it at sea or on the boat. Am I right? The small fin that is clipped at the hatchery is called the adapose fin. See you all on the water next saturday. Will |
