fished up in santa cruz this morning for two fish. mixed up seas with 12 knot winds in the morning but it started to lay down when we left around 10am. lots of bait. most boats had one or two, had to fish the downriggers deep at 260' or right at the bottom to get the fish.... try moving for someone with all that wire out in the wind, that'll get you to think about a mile ahead!! |

Fished PSL in the skiff today (Avocation is down again). Trolled for 5 hours @ the red light with tons of bait. Only 1 knockdown all day. I did not hear of a keeper landed! Heard of a few up in Morro, but it sounded very slow there too! Be back out next weekend. The bait is there, now we just need the fish to bite. Gorgeous day on the water. Saw several Minke whales again. best fishes, steve |

Friends: If you haven't purchased your tickets yet to our big fundraiser tonight at the Morro Bay Community Center (fish fry at 6 pm), please get there early if you want to purchase "at the door". 2 years ago we were overflowing and it was lucky the fire marshall didn't show up. See you all there. Mel |

Joe: That comment about north and south has right away against east and west was a comment I made to the Windfall (Hather is a friend of mine). It was a joke since we were on a collision course. I certainly hope no one took that comment seriously. I find that boaters here are much more considerate than in Monterey Bay ... just my observation. Sorry if I made a comment that confused anyone. BBQ, that was me. I am sorry if I bummed you out, In the interest of clarity, I was noting the spelling of ADIPOSE. No offense. I am a friend of all fishermen and I will support you all to the end. I am a product of higher education,so sometimes I feel like an editor. Don't worry about it, it is not personal, and I will try to curtail it in the future. Will |

Hello Michell, I totally agree, you are right, the last three times fishing I can tell you there have been at least 5 times that we have been totally cut off, including today. We have had other boats telling us they have the right away, north and south takes the rule over east and west, if the other boater would have changed their course 3 degrees a mile or so away their would not have been a problem at all. The birds are working the center of the bait ball. If you drive right throught the birds, you are dragging all you gear through the bait below and splitting the bait ball up. which in turn drives the fish down or away. If you keep your distance far enough away not to scare the birds, you are on the outside of the ball. This is where the fish are. Take a look at a underwater video showing any kind of fish working on bait balls, they are looking for the wounded buffalo on the outside. Easy pickings. Reference, Bob Franko. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. PS. If there is anyone out there who would like to bang or thrash me on my spelling. Go ahead have at it. A couple of weeks ago someone had a great time bashing my spelling, Adapost or Atipost fin. They spent their time bashing the spelling and did not get the message. If anyone turns in a fish with a cliped Aditpost or Adapost Fin, take your pick, south of Big Sur, this year from the Klamonth River, what do you think the DFG. will do to our fishing rights for next year. The same they are doing north of Big Sur, use the information against us, to close us down next year. Thight Lines, hope we all get alote of Salmon this year. PSS. I wish this board had spell check. I appologize again for not having good spelling. |

If I were to troll through the center of a bait ball, I would scatter the bait and push the fish down. I try not to do this. If someone was working a bait ball by trolling around it in circles, trying to catch the fish around it, I would look pretty stupid driving right through the middle of it and scattering it, rather than falling in behind them or finding a different ball since there are so many of them around. Everyone makes mistakes, but I would never even think of this as a way to catch fish. |

It was very slow salmon fishing in front of Morro Rock today even though the bait was massive. Very different from yesterday in that there were hundreds of birds diving on the surface bait and the bait was top to bottom for miles. We caught one shaker and most of the 40 boats went home empty. Otherwise conditions looked perfact. I'll be at the door tomorrow night 6:00 at the Morro Bay Community Center for the CCFCC dinner. Bob Hather |

Mark, You are hearing C.G. San Francisco. The Federal waters are only closed above Pt. Sur as there is no Klamath impact in our area. The waters below Sur are open in State (out to 3 miles) as well as Federal waters (out to 200 miles). I did hear from a private boater who called my office on Monday stating that they were harrassed by C.G. Morro Bay for being out more than 3 miles. The C. G. was wrong on this and I called Eric at the MB Harbor office who said he would talk to C.G.M.B. Steve Patriot Sportfishing |

Thanks Michele. Also, Central Coast Salmon Enhancement will be receiving this year's fish at Port San Luis on May 10th. We will be having a salmon BBQ at the base of the pier to celebrate and to raise a litle more money for fish food and equipment. Hope all you fishermen and women can make it to Avila to see the new fish and to have some food and beer. Thanks for supporting us. More info later. Will |

Friends: Harold Davis is just back from Sacramento and said that the hard work of Coastside Fishing Club was pivotal in getting a decent salmon fishing season. Be sure to read the article by Ben Sleeter below. These guys were fabulous and put in a great deal of work. They all deserve a pat on the back. They are also the group that is waging a lawsuit against CDFG to stop the MLPA process because of the influence of outside interest groups who have an agenda to stop fishing. We have contributed $5,000 to their cause and will contribute more as the case progresses. We need your support ... see the comments to follow. Mel |

I got this off the Coastside board . I could not be more proud to be a member of this club than I am right now. Not because we have won anything - because we have not - but because what I saw today is perhaps the most inspirational grass-roots political campaign most of us will ever be a part of. I can say without any reservation that today is the Coastside Fishing Club's finest hour. Everything that unfolded today was a result of our great membership. You guys stepped up to the plate in the biggest way and not only did you show up, but you conducted yourselves with the utmost class. I can not stress how important that is in these processes and today you guys helped us bank a serious amount of political capitol through your actions. Decision makers do not respond well to being called names and heckling. What they respond to is logic and passion and that’s what you all brought to the table today. Fantastic job! The public testimony was incredible! Mike Giraudo gave perhaps the best speech I have ever heard and the entire time he had the most determined and focused look on his face and never lost eye contact with the members of the Council. They had no choice but to pay attention to his impassioned plea and it worked. Mike always minimizes the work he does for the club but I would like to say that without him we would be nothing close to what we are. Mike, you really delivered a good one today brother. And then there was big Mike Velasquez who nailed it only like Mike is capable of doing. One minute he has me laughing my ass off and the second I was fearing for the lives of anybody that refuses to "get it." Great job Mikey!! I don’t want to leave anybody out but I know I will. Jonah, Grumpy, Joe Carter, Harold Davis, and especially Ken Elie were just awesome. We had the absolute perfect balance of science and analysis, economics, and the human impact and I assure you it was THE difference in this process. Lots of stuff happens behind the scenes but at some point the rubber still has to meet the road and you guys left skid marks that would rival even the best effort by a certain rib and chicken eating leader of ours. So where are we now… As most of you know the Council voted on Darrell’s proposal to review and adopt the recreational component of Option 1 with one small modification (the area around the Klamath would be closed during August). The vote was unanimous with the exception of the NMFS member and his vote was expected and is protocol. Maria, the California representative, did vote in favor of Darrell’s option. Throughout the day it did not look like this would happen until DFG Director Broddrick showed up. I can only assume that some direction was handed down and if that was indeed the situation we can thank Ryan Broddrick for his guidance. Thank you sir for coming to the side of recreational anglers. So now the slightly modified Option 1 will go to the Salmon Technical Team (STT) for review. If the numbers check out as expected I do not see any reason why this would not be the recreational component put in front of the Council for a final vote either Thursday or Friday. What all this means is that we do not have anything yet but things look good. We still have some big hurdles to get past at the end of the week but based on the questions I heard from the Council members today it appears as though they are in favor of allowing some limited fishing opportunity in line with the NMFS guidance. One of the most requested things today was some hard numbers from NMFS. The Council was asking for NMFS to basically tell them how many fish would be acceptable. The closest answer we got was “not in the tens, and not in the thousands.” This sends a clear message that a recreational season in line with Option 1 would be acceptable since our impact on these fish is on the order of 200-300 or so natural spawners. This of course is all speculation at this point but I wanted to try to give you all a read into the current situation, at least from my perspective. I should also say that I had several very encouraging discussions with a certain NMFS representative where we got to discuss some details of the recreational fishery. Again, I walked away from those discussions pleased with the message I was given. A few other highlights from the last couple of days: I was able to arrange to have a documentary film maker join us Monday night and for the rally today. Some of you may have met Ryan who was doing some filming for a group called Shifting Baselines. I have been in communication with this group for some time now and I was very happy to see them take a very active interest in this particular issue. The Klamath River is perhaps the quintessential shifting baselines story and I think our involvement here will be positive. I don’t expect anything anytime soon but once they have something put together I will be sure to make it available. I don’t want to speak out of turn here but I hear a MAJOR environmental organization will be submitting some literature tomorrow supporting the recreational component of Option 1. More on this later as I don’t want to jinx anything. I will leave it at that only to add that this is something I have been working on for a while now and I am hopeful this relationship will continue to grow. The last thing I want to say is that this is not over by a long shot. Being a Raider fan I always try to tell myself something bad will happen until the final whistle blows and that is the attitude I am taking here. I refuse to let myself get complacent with today’s events and I hope that is the attitude you all take in regards to this issue. It’s kind of like having that 40# salmon worn out and ready for the net - now is not the time to loose our focus and whack him in the head. We have to continue to hit the ASA website hard and what I mean here is get it to as many people as you can. Don’t go overboard but be diligent in your effort. Nothing as of yet is guaranteed and the White House and NOAA can decide to not allow anything. I do believe that is a remote possibility but because it is still a possibility we have to keep our eyes focused on the prize. Don’t let your guard down. My very last thing is again a big thank you to all that have stepped up on this issue. There are so many of you that have made this campaign possible and I hope to shake each and every one of your hands some time soon. Today is a day we can all be proud of and is the first huge step in preserving recreational fishing in California. I am so proud to be a member of this organization. Today was the Coastside Fishing Club’s finest hour. -------------------- Ben Sleeter 22 Davis Cortez Coastside Political Team |

Good article. Stacy sent it to me. Right now the weather looks good fri, sat & sunday. Thursday may be ok but is a little iffy right now wind wise. The early reports out of Sacramento are not good. It seems the feds are pretty biased towards a total closure above Pt. Sur. Their position is "we can't lose even one Klamath salmon" |

Went out Sat. morning by myself since all friends were either sick, working or just didn't want to be with me on the water. Got out a little late, around 6:30 and heard one boat talking about catching a limit and was on the way in. I put down with an rsk and caught my one and only fish in about 15 min. and that was it. It weighed 18 pounds and is the biggest salmon I've ever caught. Wife fixed some last night and few things taste better than fresh salmon caught by yourself. Hope everyone does well. Used several techniques from the salmon dinner last week and that is what I caught the fish on. Thanks again. |

Last year when I came back to the ramp one afternoon on a light cold front southerly wind day, after I told a commercial friend that we had been skunked, his response was "I never fish salmon on a southerly. They don't bite." So go figure, kinda lends credence to the theory. As for Sunday counts, while I don't know the official count, Sunday was VERY slow compared to what I heard for Saturday. Sunday was just a handfull of fish if you can believe the radio chatter. We got one. One 11-incher that is. Cute little bugger, don't think that he even qualified as a "shaker" though because we didn't even know that he was there until we pulled up our gear for a random status check. At least he swam away. But that 11-incher was a big step forward from our 8-inch mackerel from the day before!!! Yahoo anybody wanna go fishing with me!!! Highliner for sure!!!!!!!!!! Eric Endersby |

Friends: I am going to try to post a reminder every day on this site about our upcoming fundraiser fish-fry dinner at the Morro Bay Community Center this coming Saturday at 6 p.m. Cost of a ticket is $35 and they can be purchased at Virg's, Four Season's Outfitters, at the door, or by calling our CCFCC office at 544-2424 (leave detailed message). We really need your support. We would like you to try to buy tickets in advance so that we know how much food to order for the dinner ... This is our big fundraiser event of the year. Mel |

Gopher: I am on the MIG panel. In fact, at our next meeting which is on April 25, I will be heading up a discussion about the problems is using our valuable on-board survey catch data to change the current "data poor" condition of the Dept. of Fish & Game. We are getting real resistence to using this data to get better regulations for the Central Coast (i.e. a longer fishing season). The CCFCC had two members on the MLPA working group of stakeholders (Bob Hather and Darby Neil). Our members worked for almost an entire year trying to keep the anti-fishing groups from dominating the process. The majority proposal (Proposal #1) was the proposal backed by the fishing coalition. The CCFCC is also a member of the CFC and supported the work of Howard Egan and others working for fishermen in front of the Blue Ribbon Panel. Feel free to e-mail me or call me if you have any questions about our positions or recent activities. Mel de la Motte President of CCFCC |

Stayed on the Sissy Friday night in MB and got rock and rolled with the storms. Spent allot of Saturday morning far out tuning the new kicker autopilot. It worked awesome. Caught one quality fish on a watermellon apex at 100' in about 180'. Anyone hear the MB count for Sunday? |

Mel, Does CCFCC have a representative at MIG? If so, who? Also who was representing CCFCC for the public imput at the blue ribbon task force meeting at the Inn at Morro Bay? I'm not insinuating anything, I'm just wondering who to look for at these meetings. Thanks. |

“Heard that the descending barometric pressure puts them off” Will, not sure about salmon but I use this same way of thinking for albies. I have been told by many that it does effect the bite. Now is it true? I have no idea. I have seen a few times when albies will be wide one day and the next they go deep while the pressure is descending. Tides also have a big effect and they aren’t the best right now. Congrats to all you guys/gals catching salmon. It's very nice to see. |

I could not help myself and fished Morro Bay again today. Things were different than yesterday. I metered lots of bait and salmon, but they were not hungry. Tried everything except bait, which I did not have. Some fish were caught on RSKs with anchovies, but it was slow. Heard that the decending barometric pressure puts them off, can anybody out there confirm that? I still had fun trolling and yacking on the radio. It is great to be back out on the water. Will |

Ron; Those fish were caught in Monterey. I also heard of salmon over 30 lbs caught up there. The boats with the most success fished for them as deep as 200 ft on the downrigger. |

Thanks Michelle for the info on cross channel crossing. I didn't know that rule so in the future when it happens (it happens a lot) I will still do what is necessary to avoid them but they just might get to hear my air horn ! Wes; you should have stayed and fished today. I heard the bite was great and Harley got 6, all over 20 lbs !! I fished Avila both days for one small fish but it was enough to cure my depression. I sure hope the bait sticks around. I have never seen as much bait as I saw yesterday. I never had a clean screen for more than five minutes all day. |

Back From Moss at about 10:00pm last night with 1 quality fish and dreams about the giant that got away. The party in the lot the night before was worth the trip. BBQ and Beers in the rain, clearing in the evening for cigars and fish tales. Some boats did better, limits were very rare but the weather was nice. 2 main fleets, 1 off Mulligans the other in the So. Hole. Glad the opener was a success locally. We'll see you on the water fisrt break in the weather! Wes |

This year's opener went way smoother than last year's, as far as boat handling. A couple people missed the safety course though. Two important things: 1. Landing a fish is not the most important thing. The fish don't count if you are in a collision, your boat sinks, and the fish go down with the vessel. 2. Vessels under 20 meters can't cross the channel in front of another vessel, no matter if you have a sail or not. Inland rules start at the entrance BUT, most sailors don't know this, so just try to make it through them safely. Good job everyone! Morro Bay had about 50 fish- San Luis had about 18 fish- reports are pretty bleak from up north. Be safe first, then catch fish. |

Fished PSL with my pop yesterday in the Avocation. Got off to a sketchy start when our boat got stuck on the sandbar at 5 a.m. Fortunately the water taxi guy pulled us off. Thanks a ton!!! Fished with the fleet from 5:30 to 1 pm. Had 5 knockdowns for the day, all on chovies, rsk, small red flasher. The other rod did not get touched. Unfortunately 3 came unbottoned and the two we landed were 19". A good day of salmon fishing, but no keeper in the box. The amount of bait was amazing. Top to bottom in 150' of water. Amazing! I think this will be a good salmon season. Had a possible Minke whale sighting. Has anyone seen these around here? It would be my first. best fishes, steve |

My brother and his father in law and I fished with Michele on the Fiesta today, Albert, thats my brothers father in law, thought he was snarled up so he started reeling in, he was using anchovie and a medium flasher, he was working his way down the rail so when he got to me he handed the pole over and I reeled in, felt like a lot of seaweed, well anyway I was headed over towards my brother, Jon, and I handed the pole to him over most of the lines, thats when we realised that it weren't no seaweed! 12lb! team caught! A huge thanks to Michele and her Mom and crew, for taking us newbies out and showing us how to do it! Got ourseves a full limit of knowledge today! And a nice fish for brunch tomorrow. |

You boat operators need to be a little more heads up when you're underway. Even @ 1.5 to 3 mph... Nobody wants a misshap @ sea. Try and be more considerate of other boats around you. Today could've been disasterous had both boat operators been looking the other way. Crossing the channel in front of other boats was NOT cool... Please be careful when you're out there... Nuff said |
