What we need are more fish and the tackle we have right now will catch...On my last post about halibut I talked about my techniques on trolling for halibut..This brought on a very intersesting conversation about dodger vs flasher...It has been my observation that each boat seems to fish differently, I don't know why but I fish with alot of very talented fishermen on some very nice boats and when I try the different techniques they use on my boat they don't seem to work as well...My point is I think you have to figure out what works for you using every technique that has been posted because they work and you need to have that knowldge filed away to try when the fish are being caught all around you and you can't seem to get bit.....Good luck to all John |

A Kajiki squid is very similar to a hoochie but the eyeballs are farther back; looks just like a small squid. I bought some to try on WSB, which hasnt happened yet. Cloud out |

Michelle; I just ordered 6 packs of them from Todd at Bayside. Should have them next week. I haven't seen one but I think they are simlilar to a hootchy but more expensive at $2 a copy. They come in purple haze, glow chartuse, glow green and a couple other colors. They are pretty popular at Monterey so we will see how they do here. |

We fished out of PSL today and got lucky with an early morning bite. We had a 10 lb. and 15 lb. Salmon by 8:15. They were in 180 feet of water down 85 feet on the wire. We will be back in the morning to see if this will hold for tomorrow. Good Luck. Playing Hooky |

Greetings, Fished Moss again today. Amazing how fast fishing can change from one day to the next. We managed to put two fish in the box, including a fat 20 pounder...but it was scratch fishing compared to yesterday. Only heard of a few limits, where yesterday there were many. Had about 8 knockdowns, hooked 3 and landed two. All three fish we hooked were on purple haze, red hot spot at 100'. Had a few hits on bait, but they didn't stick. Do folks have trouble hooking fish when they fish bait? I probably hook less than half the knockdowns on bait. I'm thinking about just not fishing bait so I will have a better hook up ratio. Hope the salmon fishing picks up here...otherwise I will be making another trip back to Moss. It is about a 3 hour drive from the Moss launch ramp to A.G. best fishes, steve |

Hello Will, Please e-mail the volunteer schedul to me. djaflc@yahoo.com Talked with two fisherman out of Morro Bay, today they said the bite was off. Had no reports of fish being caught. The cause might be the low pressure coming again. Good luck this weekend. Best regards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ. |

Martine, I was expecting 20-30 knts with fairly crappy seas by this afternoon. Instead it was 0-5 knts. 5-7 ft. with a comfortably long period. I look at Diablo forecast and Northern California NOAA/CDIP Buoy Data. This way I get 2 forecasts to average- keeping in mind that Diablo is usually more accurate and NOAA is usually for 0-60 nautical miles ( big spread)- and real time buoy reports. Combine all this and you get a pretty good idea of what the weather will do-90% of the time. There was that day last year that I ended up 40 miles from Morro with the Hilliards on Ms Mackey, we thought it would be variable and it blew 40 knts off shore. Long ride home. Dicky kept the lines in the water though. P.S. We tried on the bait and off the bait today and neither worked. |

Looking at the Lindsey forecast for Sunday...I am seeing 4 to 6 at 9 to 11 with Light and variable...I went out last Sunday with the same kind of report and got my fanny scared off the water in my small boat....Did I miss something in last weeks report? What does Sunday look like to you all....What do you see Michelle? I dont blame the Lindsey report. I rely on him....Ksby gives us nothing.... I would think that a local TV news station within a local fishing community would have better reports.Explicit to our safety and needs.. But then, KSBY doesnt seem to support local fisherman anyway..... Hey I want to thank everyone for all the info. on Flashers and Dodgers and bottom bouncing for Halibut.... You have created a very clear picture in my mind that should make a big difference betwen just fishing and catching...Thanks everyone. Marty |

Tim TreeDoc) You got that right ! Also look at her first paraghaph "....to restrict the salmon fishing on the Klamath River" The big worry was not the fishing on the Klamath river but the whole west coast, so you can see she really studied the issue closely. A reminder; When a lot of small fish are being caught (Joe's report) be sure and check to see if they are Silvers before keeping them. I have caught several the last 2-3 years. The best way to tell is the lower gums right at the base of the teeth. They will not be black on silvers but they may have black elsewhere it their mouth. |

I guess it's a good thing that the Bush Administration screwed up as it's pretty much the only way you could expect Boxer or Feinstein to get off their asses and do something for such a cause. I'll believe in their effort when I see it with my own eyes. |

Folks, I would like to share this response from Barbara Boxer. Keep sending those letters! Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about a recent proposal by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) to restrict the upcoming salmon fishing season on the Klamath River . I appreciate hearing from you, and I share your concerns. I was distressed to learn about the PFMC's proposal, which would limit the length of the fishing season and restrict the number of fish that can be caught. This proposal is based on an unreasonable worst-case scenario; it should be recalculated to reflect the better health of some of our salmon runs on other rivers. Fishing communities are not to be blamed for our declining salmon population, so they should not be bearing the brunt of this decision. The problem today is the Bush Administration's water and energy policies, which do not respect the needs of our fishing communities. If a proposal to restrict the upcoming fishing season moves forward, it should include financial assistance to keep our fishing communities whole, so that they do not face terrible losses. We must also work to change current policies in order to restore our wild salmon population and improve the health of the Klamath River . Again, thank you for contacting me about this crucial issue. Rest assured, I will keep your views in mind as I work with my colleagues in Congress on legislation to address this matter. We fished out of Monterey today. The best bite for us was in front of Mulligans. The fish were biting on krocs blue and green 5 feet behind a dodger 150 ft on the wire. The fish were big today from mid teens to 25lb. Limits for three were caught. |

Fished Moss Landing today in the Avocation. Started the day off with at double 15 minutes into trolling (8 & 14 pounders). We then went through a 0/10 stretch where we got lots of knockdowns, but couldn't put a hook in a fish. We finally filled out our limit at 1:30 with a small fish. The other fish was another 14 pounder and we lost a 15+ pounder at the net. Very good fishing. We fished NW of Moss in 160-210' of water. Fish were 80-150' down. Caught fish on RSK and purple haze and green/white hootchies...all with red hotspots. A ton of boats out and most folks caught some fish...several had limits. I would hate to see what this place looks like on the weekend. Folks were courteous and shared info. We'll be out there again tomorrow and then heading home tomorrow night. This was our first time to Moss. Definitely worth the trip. Email me if you'd like more info. best fishes, steve |

I trolled for salmon today in front of the Rock along with five other boats that I saw (I got out after 12:00) and no fish were caught. The bait was mostly on the bottom so we trolled deep and caught one lingcod. The water was clear and 55 degrees. Bob Hather |

The way I understand it, and I always appreciate being set straight, is when using a flasher or dodger, the lure with no action of itself needs to be 18" behind to get the action from the flasher or dodger. But, if the lure has it's own action, the leader is a lot longer, like 4 feet or more. Example Dodgers with hoochies have 18" leaders vs. flashers with RSK(or spoons, Apex...) can have leaders as long as 5 feet. Hell, my all time favorite is the weight release with a 12 foot leader to a white spoon. Sean |

Will, the bite at santa cruz went on good yesterday, rotary killers are generally used with a flasher, i use 4ft. leader, better yet for bait get some fbr. FRANKLIN BULLETT ROTATORS. As for speed, put your gear in the water along side the boat and see what it does, if the rotators roll and give good action you should be ok,if not you may have to pick up the pace or slow down. As a rule salmon are lazy feeders so a slow roll gets hit. hope this helps den tincancaptin |

That would be awesome if everyone knew the navigation rules. The book can be ordered at Gianinni's. I believe it is $14.00. Although it would be difficult to follow them while fishing so close together... yeah, on second thought it wouldn't work. |

quote: "Sometimes I really wish we had better software driving this board so we could block anon posts and chose to IGNORE users we feel are idiots!" Amen to that idea!!! Now, my turn to beat the dead horse.... Why wouldn't the rules of right away and methods of overtaking a vessel not apply? Does the act of fishing while underway throw that all out the window and allow for a free for all? I'd think not. |

Michael, We both grew up in fishing families and you are 2 years older than me. I am surprised we haven't met before. My dad knows your dad from dragging. As far as opening day, I don't try to push anyone anywhere. I am also trying to avoid everone when we are close together. I am sorry you misunderstood this for an attack on you. Thank goodness we weren't fishing up in Moss opening day! |

OK, so that is definitely enough about boat handling courtesy. Let's get back to fishing and fish reports. There was a question about RSKs. What is the best way to rig them? How long a leader? Flasher or dodger? What speed works well? I very rarely use bait, but I certainly will if it will get me a fish. Last year I caught salmon incidently when I was using live bait for halibut. In fact, my biggest fish of the year was caught that way. That was in late July! Will |

Masterbaiterboy..I have more combined fishing experience than most of you..my family has commercial fished for at least 60 years on this coast and who knows how long back at the Azore Islands were my grandfather was from. I personally commercial fished on a 53ft swordfish gillnetter and a 45 ft harpoon boat for ten years and I guarantee I have more experience than the captain of the Fiesta. She is the one who was cutting into me, try to push me out of "HER BAITBALL" I was working a straight tack and she kept cutting into me on my starboard side because she knew I was'nt going to F" with her when she has the right of way. End of story ..I adjusted my speed and slid in behind her..she didn't have to do anything. So if you want to take her side who the hell cares..her tactics were "bush league" IMHO The funny thing was we both cruised around those bait balls for hours and neither of caught a fish..so much for the baitball theory that day. My family still runs two commercial boats in SB..they are "PORTUGEE GREEN " in color so please save your boating lectures for someone who cares. |

gorgito, if you are going to fish with the fleet, toughen up a little. M.B. party boat captains are the first ones to let you know where the bait/ fish is, salmon and albies. who found the albies 2 yrs. ago? Michele did. It's a big ocean out there, you don't have to fish by other boats if you don't know how. |

So much of it is common sense...a trait not always exhibited on crowded days. In places like Moss, Morro, and even Santa Barbara when the salmon are around....as you head towards the fleet (if you are going to fish with the fleet) just keep your eyes open and figure out the directions that most folks are trolling. Like John said...it's often upswell or downswell or a variation thereof. Slide in and give yourself some elbow room. Be aware of other boats' headings and you're cool...pretend you are an aircraft controller. Going against the grain will just give you fits. |

in defence of mike gorjita i talked to a commercial friend of mine who fishes out of eureka now and fished for many many years out of monterey bay up and down the coast ,my friend skip says it doesnt make any difference if you troll through the bait ball or along the edge ,as far as right of way between skifs and party boats ,every body should use a little courtesy and give a little ,commercial boats are a little different because there usually on auto pilot and back working there gear ,how do you figure who found the bait ball first ,were not dogs and cant pee on the spot to mark it ,if everybody works together and tacks the same way things go pretty smooth ,like north and south ,but then you always have the bozo who tacks east /west zig zagging behind and ahead of everybody that really causes the problems ,and as you can tell with my spelling and such ,im no school teacher |

The weather and fishing reports have taken a turn for the better in Monterey. Heading up tonight, fishing Moss Landing Thurs/Fri. Does anyone know what channel they are on? Email me if you are heading up. I'll post a report friday night. best fishes, steve P.S. What's up with the forecast for Monterey Bay. They are forecasting 4-9 foot swells. I've never seen such a large range of swell size for a forecast. Anyone know why? |

Jos, He's at cachuma showing Amanda all the in's and out's of trout fishing. There's not enough passengers up there for a 2nd boat. He has a trip Fri. but he is trying to find someone else to run the boat (forever) so he can stay here. It doesn't sound like they are doing very well up there either. Everything else in nature was late this year, so maybe the salmon are too. I have a bird watch today, so maybe I can look around a little. All: Thanks for the support. |

Mr. Gorgita, You may want to revise your statement regarding big boats and giving them the bird if you fish albacore. One of those tankers we often see would crush you like the amoeba on the leg of an ant while cruising at twenty five knots. Big boats can't turn sharp as previoulsy posted and they have a lot of gear that you know will get snarled if they turn too sharp. Give them a break. What's your problem? |

Well Michael G., I got to agree with the masses here. The local party boats work very closely with the local anglers. I have fished this area for many years and even commercialed for a few. Does it make me an expert? No. But I have also crewed out of CI and spent more than my fair share of time fishing southern Ca. These guys may have older boats and not the most modern equipment, but they work hard to earn a pretty tough living in times when they can barely make it out of the harbor due to excessive regulations and limited seasons. Michele and her crew work plenty hard dealing with people that think party boats mean: first-a party and second-tons of fish. The first part makes them poor fishmen, the second part makes them no fishermen at all. We all know the bite goes on and off. All you do when running a boat is give it your best effort. Anyone running a boat for fun or hire wants to see the passengers catch fish. I seriously doubt that you were intentionally cut off or bullied. Big boats don't turn on a dime. Maybe calmer heads would prevail if we all took on DFG rather than each other. |

Wes, that's a dang funny question! And Sissy...no worries at all...I was laughing when I read your remark about arrogant schoolteachers...truly I was! Didn't offend me in the least...been teaching junior high twenty years, the only thing left that offends me is my ex wife! Thin skin doesn't last long in today's classrooms or on internet fishing forums. Now...let's go catch some fish, tip a few beers, and have some fun. Michael, Stu and I will see you at Brophy's.... Sleep tight, all.... |

Hello Guys, The flasher, dodger, questions. There has been some great advice provided here. I will add, when trolling a flasher, red works well in muddy merky water. Green works well in cleaner or clear water. Trolling a 11" flasher, our leader is no longer than 22 inches. When trolling a dodger our leader is no longer than 12 inches. As Will Bateman, posted the shorter the leader the more action the lure. When trolling spoons from a flasher or dodger at least 30 inch leader if not more. The spoons have their own action and need the space to work. Using Florucarbon leaders is a great way to go. Best regards, Joseph & Tami Anderton BBQ. |

Hello Michael Gordito, Well thinking inside the box. It apperares you are the one throwing the most insults around and being very out spoken in a disrespectful manner. Try using a non aggresive approch when bashing people. Using other peoples names blammming them for being corrected, is a cop out. If Costello, told you to jump off a bridge would you? The most funny thing here is the last four seasons Michell, has helped more people catch fish on the central coast, including her giving everyone around last season the location of the best bait around, which produced the largest Salmon, catch in years, on opening day. If following in the tradition of here Grand Mother, Mother, and Father, is a bad thing I'm jealous, please Michell, don't stop. I look forward to learnig from you and your family. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and your parents the last 4 years. Thank you, for all your support, generosity, and help. I will say catching 3 fish opening day was good. Michael, just to let you know there were other boats out with more fish than you, they have not felt the need to let everyone know about it. F.Y.I. our first fish came in 85 feet water at 60 feet our second fish came while lowering the gear at 15 feet. Last season our biggest fish 32 pounds came at 40 feet down in 250 feet of water. I'm not sure of what fishing in a box is like, we just keep adjusting till we find what works. Best regards, Joseph Anderton BBQ. PS. When fishing around bigger boats, giving them the space they need is a good thing and will save you some frustration. When we are approching other boats going the other direction we try to adjust our course not to run into them or cause a conflict. |
