Butler,
If you're in the Morro Bay South-Central Management Area which includes Morro Bay and Port San Luis down to Point Conception, you're good to go from 0 to 40 fathoms (0-240').

Good Luck!

Does anyone know if Deke is going to have bait tomorrow? If they've got bait, I'll be chasing halibut/big lings out of PSL tomorrow in the mini-Avocation. I'll be on 68.
later,

Fished out of Morro Bay today on a beauitful ocean. Found lots of bait and wildlife. Picked up one salmon which weighed in at 20.6 # gilled and gutted. Picked it up in 180 feet of water between radar buoy and the rock, 110 ft down using a flasher and green/white hoochie. Not many caught in Morro and heard of about a half dozen off the lighthouse in Pt San Luis.

Hey everybody. Since SloTroller put my picture on his post I guess I've gained the unwanted notoriety of being on fishreports.com now & must post my own message!! Couldn't have asked for a better day at the islands for a first-time trip to Rosa/Cruz searching for the elusive WSB. Big thanks to Capt. Dave & Tiffany (Wavewalker) who made it look too easy for us. The light boat selling live squid at Becher's didn't hurt either. A scoop of that & half hour later limits for 6 guys. No swell, glassy all day. Where do I sign up for that again! You guys down there got it good having that beautiful backdrop to fish around & when they are on the chew it's truly incredible.
Definitely a good break from a sluggish start to the salmon season. Great message board, great people sharing info. Still feelin' that next day fish buzz too! Talk at you all later, Scott

Wes, the boats name will eventually be called "SloTroller" so end the drama now! Thanks

Wes, glad you got the fish!
I got your email too late to do anything about it...would have been fun to head down to Brophy's to see you guys but my evening was full...and this weekend is a wash...no fishing for me...yardwork etc.

I just took a look at this site and there are some good posts. A lot of talk about predicting the weather and which report or bouy to use. Might check out Wetsand.com. Go to surf reports, pick north america and then central coast. It is a real good graphic of swell, waves, wind and tide. Not perfect, but have been using it for years to predict surf and have had pretty good luck. Compares well to Diablo report. My $.02.

Fished Santa Rosa today with Captain Dave and Tiffany on the WaveWalker.

Epic.

WSB Limits by 11:30 and didn't wet a line until 10:30. Halibut and rockies to top off the cooler. Captain spent time exploring, looking for the right spot, not letting us fish and making us nervous only to put us right on top of the fish like a true pro! WSB, patients...a must

We wanted to learn the ropes down South and we got one hell of an education. Top notch program, excellent service, we absolutely recommend Captain Dave!

We were at Brophies before the 5 o'clock crowd and home by dark.

Fished Montana de Oro this afternoon from 4 till 6 pm. caught one small barred perch on bloody sand worm. Water was a little rough, surf not good for the surfers. although there were a few out. there was a whale in the surfline for a little while, mottled grey, but seemed small for a grey whale. anyway it was sure getting those surfers attention.

Congrats to the BBQ. If anyone can find them, Joe can. I made a pilot run to Monterey (driving) and then to Moss since I have been skunked lately at MB. I talked to some guys coming in at both locations. They said that today was the worst day that they have had since the opener. One had a 22 pounder and another two guys had two in the teens. I want a bad day like that. They have to fish within 3 miles until Monday when the limit is lifted. The commercials can fish Monday and, of course, the RF season will open. The fish were caught mostly at about 160 feet. I don't know what areas they were referring to so I will be lost if I go up there.
The patrol said best to avoid this coming Monday, that it will be kaos at the ramp. I checked out the new RV park at Moss and decided that I didn't want to pay $59/night to park there. To rent a slip at Monterey it's 50 cents a foot/night. They do get $6 /day for parking permits. So for $19 (26 foot boat) you get a slip, power and water use, and use of the showers and bathrooms. Ramp use is free. Restaurants are close. Moss is about the same, but not as nice. It's about a 2.5 hour run up to Monterey from MB.

Fished out of M.B. this morning on the BBQ. Had 1 NICE! fish on deep and dumped him. I guess I shouldn't get so upset at passengers. No more bites for a while. At about 10:30 we ran for PSL. 15 min. after putting the lines in we had 3 keepers! We ended up catching 6 keepers for 3 people and lost another 2. We were treated to a glassy run home. Fished with 3-4 other boats and the Patriot. I guess kind of in between the lighthouse and green can? Joe prob. knows where we were. I had fun not really caring. The fish came on straight bait, flasher bait, watermelon kroc, and green flasher purple haze, and maybe a green flasher green hoochie. In 190 ft. of water, 50 to 120 ft. and maybe 1 at 180. Awesome day, and it's nice to have salmon in the frig (thanks Joe).

For what it's worth, here is my salmon update. Fished out of MB yesterday evening till sunset. Lots of life, small dolphins, whales and birds. Trolled from 170-210' for 2 hours with no bait to be metered. Found bait in 120-140', however, once again no salmon nor any hit what so ever. Water color looked real good, kinda coffee looking..swell was 6-8 but not much wind waves..all in all conditions seemed promising..Heading out again this morning for mid-afternoon try at it...jeez, I am getting to be quite a pathetic optimist..or maybe just a severly inflicted addict..hell its all the same, just got to get my line wet-

Jason,
I think the launch at Avila is dumb. You have to wait in line, pay money, launch late, and deal with the low tide. I launched on Monday and was reminded why I always fish out of MB. If you have a four stroke it is almost worth it drop the boat in MB and run down extra early, and start fishing before they operator shows up late at Portside.

Just checked the tides for Sat/Sun. They are minus tides and occur pretty close to the morning launch period.

Regardless of boat size, I'd call Portside to hear what their thoughts are. It might save you a trip or a long wait.

They have been dredging the launch for a month. You should be good unless you go at the bottom of a minus tide. Last weekend the operator was a little late to show up.

Jason,
I was out there on Sunday during low tide and there is a "squeek" of a channel that is dredged but that whole area is really silted up. The area between the seawall and dock was bone dry and that beach now extends all the way around to Fisherman's Beach. Boats are still getting in and out though, it's just real tight and one at a time as from what I saw, you couldn't put two boats side by side in the channel.

If it's anywhere near a minus tide, you might be hosed. I'd call down there to Portside Marine and get the skinny straight from the horse's mouth.

Its 15.00 at the gate...10.00 for your dog..and 6.00 to put a boat in the water!!!!!!! So what do you do? Leave your dog at home? I bought my dog a fishing license with a 2 rod stamp so that we can fish 2 lines on the downriggers and to flat lines.... I called Brandon at the harbor Hut and you have a 50.00 tab........ Thanks for unhookin' me...Sorry it took so long. Marty

I fished Morro Bay on Tues. Trolled for four hours without a bite. Saw some nice Bait Balls and birds diving. Some friends of mine went to Moss and came home with six nice fish. My friend let me beg a couple of nice slabs of salmon that I will put on the BBQ tonight. They said their fish all came on various spoons out near Soquel hole.

Salmon reports looked sketchy so went to Naciemiento on last Sunday...came prepared with Berkley Gulp swim minnows on jigs to try for Spotted bass and maybe White Bass....Was going to cast for them. As I entered the 5 mph zone I threw back a 3" Chartreuse Gulp minnow and was hooked up to a 1.5 lb. white bass....I never made it further into the (narrows). I trolled at 1 mph with (2 " ) Berkley gulp minnows to catch 8 fish..I never went further than 500 yrds.....I fished ultra lite trout rods and they pulled really good. I had a ball! I hear of 50 fish days, so I think that we are on the brink of a really good bite....See you guys out there this week for the Rock Cod.......Love to get em shallow on the Fly-Rod!!! mj

Bubba,
Check the Diablo Weather Report above. It is the best for our local conditions. The weather could be a little snotty tomorrow.
As far as fishing goes, I'd go out of PSL. There are definitely some salmon out there...you just need to be there when they bite!
Post a report if you go.
best fishes,

Fished salmon yesterday (24APR06) aboard the Patriot out of Avila. Used 4 downriggers with three lines per rigger. We trolled about 1-2 miles south of the red bouy. We landed about 10 fish, all in the 20" to 12 # class. Nearly all of the bites were on the deepest lines with 110 ft of wire and a 10# ball(from the angle on the wire line, I would guess we were fishing the deepest line at 80 feet). No single lure or bait was dominant. We fished with white hoochies, white crocodile spoons, watermelon apex and anchovies, all behind either a dodger or rotary flasher. The bite started at about 9:30 AM and ended when the winds rose to over 20 knots and we headed back to port at about 1:30 PM.

Fished Moss-SC on Monday. Conditions were perfect but fishing was scratchy at best. Started at Moss at 7am. Bait everywhere. Picked up one on fbr/herring but farmed it near the boat. Stayed there for a couple hrs for nothing more. Trolled down to pajaro. Again lots of bait, birds. No love. Heard a scratch bite at Soquel so ran out. Picked up one quick on FBR/herring 175" OTW. Farmed another on a watermelon apex. #2 in the box about an hr later under the birds on a green RSK/herring. Went dead so we ran back to try Moss again. Ended the day at 4:30 with the 2 in the box for 2. Both mid teens.

What white spoon seems to working and what size? The last time out I caught two on a straight 1oz
white Krock. There are days the larger Krocks are better. There are also days that Scalite Wobblers size 4 or 5 work..Those of you old timers remember Big Larry Royal. He loved a white no.5 scalite..They didn't seem to work on the Teachers' Pet but they might be the ticket on the Teachers'PetII..Thanks for your reports. Micheal G. You are a talented fihermen and have a vast amount of knowledge about these finiky fish. The past is the past lets move on. We are lucky enough to be healthy and rich enough to be able to pay for this sport. The better and more accurate the report the better our odds to catch..Thanks again John

Well I just got my new 10 year old 96 trophy 18 ft. down here from Washington and ready to try out on lake cachuma tommorrow and then mount the downriggers and try salmon this weekend if all goes good. Time to pick a name and also sell or sink the old boat. Good Luck fishing everyone and hope to be out there soon

I fished Morro Bay from 10:00 to 12:30 for zero salmon. None of the other four boats caught any either. Conditions looked very good however.
