Gang: Multi-day controversy or not, getting used to anchoring is a very prudent thing to do. That way when you really need your anchor fast in an emergency, or when you are at anchor and it really starts to blow, you know your gear, its characteristics, and limitations. The time to find that out is NOT when it's the first time that you are using your anchor. By depending on a mooring, you are cheating yourself and possibly putting yourself in danger by not knowing your gear. It might sound simple, but there is more to anchoring than just tossing the thing over the side. So set the hook! San Simeon has great holding ground and it will give you a good sense of accomplishment and self-reliance. Eric Endersby |

It has been a dream of mine since I fished San Simeon in my skiff for 30 years, to spend the night in the bay and fish two days in a row. I now have a boat that is capable and was excited about Darbie's offer to help relocate the old mooring anchors for any interested party. I thought that would be great for us to have a place to moor. I quit diving years ago, but I thought I could persuade a young diver to aid in the rejuvenation of the moorings. But then the controversy about 2 day limits and citations arose and I eventually abandoned the idea. I still intend to try it on the hook, so Mel I might need to take you up on your offer to defend me. John |

Hey Blackie & Caster, Bloody Sandworm finally proves successful at Oceano Dunes! Fished the incoming tide last Saturday with a buddy. 3rd cast of the day with a 6" BSw yeilds a 22# 3oz Shovelnose Guitarfish. Nasty thing it was! Caught him on 8# test and a pretty light spinning reel. Took about 15 minutes before I could get him into skinny water where my buddy could grab him by the tail. A good number of big Barred Surf Perch fell victim to none other than the BSw the other day too....finally! All big fish. They were short biting on every cast with the trusty Motor Oil/Red Flake Grub and Sandcraps as well but when I strapped on the BSw, first cast, big fish, second cast, big fish, and so on. Now it's time to get off the beach and out on the water. Michelle, Thanks for hanging on to those worms for me! I finally got up there yesterday. Picked up a real nice jacket for a great deal too! Anyone looking for a nice lined, windproof crew jacket Virg's has the deal. I've been looking for the right one for a while. The landings down in San Diego sell theirs for usually over $100 bucks. $49 at Virg's!

Luck was again with us at PSL today. We had three nice salmon by 11:00 am. The pearl spoon, aka the Pearly Girly, named because of the pastel spots on it, was the lure for us again today . It was down 100 feet on the wire. The ocean started out rough, and the wind was blowing, but it backed off and we were able to fish till 11:30. Now back to work for Ed and Sheryl. |

Friends: (About anchoring in San Simeon as part of 2-day rockfishing trip) I have to say that I disagree with both Darby and Eric Endersby on this one. "Berthing and docking" are not the same as anchoring without going ashore. The reason this was put in the regs was to prevent people from just docking or mooring-up and going ashore with their catch. The regs want to prevent people from going ashore as part of the 2-day trip. It would be idiotic to require fishermen who have fished near shore all day long to drive their boat out five miles to drift during the night. That would be an absurd translation of the law. If anyone gets in trouble anchoring in San Simeon as part of a 2-day trip ... let me know. I'll defend you in court for free. Would love to take on CDFG on that one. No judge would tolerate that type of interpretation. The key is that they don't want you going ashore in the midst of your 2-day trip. That's my opinion ... for what its worth. Mel |

Friends: I was golfing up in Santa Cruz on Saturday and decided to stop by at Moss Landing launch ramp this morning on way back to see how things were going. The young lady there who works for CRFS and counts and measures fish said that yesterday (Saturday) there was not a single salmon caught out of Moss Landing. I was there about 10 a.m. this morning and there were only 5 boat trailers in the parking lot. Pretty sad! Are the salmon coming late this year ... or not at all???? Mel |

I have caught some nice fish, biggest bow was 27 inch about 6#, caught some bigger DOLLYS ,Total rainbows for the week at 28, Dolly are protected and must be returned, kinda like our canarys, had an real experience yesterday reeling in a rainbow and had to fight a golden eagle for it , I won my brother raised enough hell to scare him off , but he was as close as 100 ft from us after the fish , I would have given it to him except that it had my apex in it. OK it raining and blowing today so we will end the derby in the house. be back next weekend to good ole CA to partake in some real fishing. Bloody sand worms forever;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; Blackie /SR |

Bubba, It is not far, maybe 4 miles straight south down the coast, just below the end of the sand spit. You will see a canyon opening up to the sea. Careful, there are some shallow reefs in close. Pretty dramatic rock piles maybe a quarter mile offshore. From there on down south is all good for rock fish. Will |

Regarding overnight anchoring: As it is we cannot legally anchor overnight. As I wil explain I very seriously doubt any of our local wardens would site for it but you never know. As it is you can anchor at Anna Cappa, 12 miles from the mainland safe harbor but not 20 miles north of Morro Bay or any other harbor. Talked about it to Tony Warrington, DFG Assitant Chief, Jorge Gross, DFG Patrol Lieutenant, and Mke Flores, President of F&G Commission. All said it is a rediculous interpretation of the law for our situation and would be easy to change. The problem is that the next commission meeting when they will be discussing changes to regulations will not be until this fall, after our season. I have been denied emergency action. They actually sounded to me to be a little ticked that the local wardens would make an issue of it. I don't think it would look to good for the warden who wrote the ticket to prefer a technicality in the law (unless there were other violations) over safety at sea. We were anchoring up here before the law was written and for many years after without any issues. Making us now drift offshore at night is a huge liability. I will keep you posted when we get our day in front of the commision this fall. If you would like to write a letter of concern please contact me at the landing 772-1222 xt11 and I'll get you the contact names and addresses of those I have been working with. A few letters would really help. |

Fished PSL this morning with two stoked brothers(first grader and third grader) We hooked four salmon on white spoon and a green/chrome Apex. I handed the rod over to the bros after the take downs and instructed them to keep the tip up, reel, reel! Yada Yada. Lost them all as the fish made the best of slack lines, but the boys were stoked. We headed west and had much better luck on the rock fish on Mega Baits. I had a blast and these guys will be the next generation of fishermen. First thing they asked when we got back to the harbor was "When can we go out again?" Will |

The pearl spoon and bubble gum were the winner's today. The water started out rough , but got a little better stayed fishable. All in all a good day. Will be back for more tommorrow. Stacy & all: I have some Multi-day declaration forms. Send me a fax no. & I will fax you a copy. Not sure what the fee is. Last year it was $3.50 Jim G; There is no limit on Sand Dabs so OK for bait. I use them exclusively when I want big lings. When the size limit on lings was 30", we caught 18 over 28 inches and three over 30 inches one day at Pt. Sal. The absolute best bait for lings though is mackeral ! I have never put down a mackeral, when fishing for lings, that didn't catch one. |

Stacey: Check your DFG ocean sportfishing booklet for the multi-day limit regs. It's on page 21 of the 2006 booklet, section 27.15. You have to apply for an application ahead of time with a bunch of info. It's not hard once you've done it a couple of times. One catch (no pun intended) is that "no berthing or docking is permitted within five miles of the mainland shore." To you and me that would mean going into the harbor for the night, but my understanding is that it applies to ANCHORING too, so you couldn't, say, anchor up at San Simeon. I believe that Darby's multi-day trips up to the Big Sur area run into problems because of this. Basically, they can't set the hook, they have to drift in the anchorage all night. It doesn't make sense to me. All the multi-day permits that I have gotten have been for the Channel Islands, so that section doesn't apply there since it's beyond 5 miles of the mainland. Anyway, check with a warden or stop by Virg's and see what they know of it. I might have it wrong, but that was my understanding. Eric Endersby |

(I have heard they are good for Ling cod) Thanks Jim |

took the afternoon off to fish for reds in front of hazards. easy limit of quality reds in only an hour or so. beautiful weather. spent the rest of the afternoon trolling around in front of the shell mounds, finally picked up one salmon inside in front of the rock. smallish 11 lbs, in 90 feet of water on a red flasher white hooch. water seemed very clean today with scattered bait marks. the salmon was plugged with small rockfish? i think. |

Jay, we can keep it if everyone on the boat is fishing with barbless hooks (even if we have rockfish on board). That hasn't happened yet since it is impossible to get everyone to fish barbless on a passenger vessel. If we catch an incidental we just release it. So, even if the person who caught it was barbless he still can't keep it unless everyone else is too. Communist style. |

Josh: To the front side of the Islands is as close as 12 miles (CIH to Anacapa) and as far as 40 miles(SB to San Miguel) Good point Foskie, If you are in closed areas like greater than 240 it is ok to have rockfish on board but no gear in the water. |

I'm back from the desert. As for the barbless hooks, I just squeeze the barb down with a crimper and the DFG has been fine with that the two times I was checked this year. Here's my question: If you catch a big salmon while halibut fishing with bait and a barbed hook, what should you do? This happened to me last year and you have to guess what I did! Will |

The DFG guy at the salmon enhancement seminar/dinner said they check the hook by running it across their skin (thumb or finger--I guess) & if it grabs you know what that means! I don't pinch 'em down anymore but instead use an angle grinder to make sure. Sometimes those hooks are hardened & don't pinch too easy. Good luck. Thanks Michele on the bait update. Did talk to some guys at the rock this a.m. that said he might have to haul out at PSL for some repairs. I think dead stuff & plastics will work for now anyway. Later, Scott |

christine--we rig for salmon with barbless and come home with incidentals--blues, lings, vermilons sp? The closer to the bottom the more variety. we hang flashers with trailers on the top setting on the down rigger with bait, crocks, plugs on the bottom and occasionaly we catch salmon but always rockfish for supper. love this site !. pilots radio "pireps"--pilot reports of flight conditions: visibility, wind, turbulence, etc. but you all give much more. up there no catching depths, lure bit, or catches and size. thanks for posting |

Speaking of barbless hooks Are the RSK's hook legal right out of the box or do you need to file it off? Is there a standard test that DFG would use to determine if it qualifies as a barb |

Went to Pt. Sal today for rockfish.Pretty flat ocean and great fishing. Brought back 6 good sized lingcod, limits of bolina/reds/etc, and a 28 inch cabazon. As to gear on the boat when salmon fishing.. anyting is ok but it better be only barbless in the water! Also, barbless hooks work fine on other fish just keep the line tight. One advantage is that it makes it easy to remove the hook. Josh; Santa Barbara, Ventura and Channel Island Harbor are all great places to launch. Just pick the one closest to the bite. Lately WSB are being caught at Santa Rosa Island so Santa Barbara would be the closest. |
