Harrel, Yep, these fish will be the big ones in the fall. Most chovies live 2 years, some three. The little guys, the 2-4 inchers we are seeing now, were the ones borne last spring/summer. I'll be fishing early in the morning in the skiff chasing halibut. I don't have the field trip until 9:30. Hope to catch a keeper flattie tomorrow! |

I fished out of Morro today for three keeper Lings and an assortment of Red and Blue Rock Cod. We were up by Cambria in 60-120 feet of water and all our quality fish came on a Root Beer/Chartruese Scampi. My friend Tom needs to learn about the habits of the infamous Morro Bay Seagulls. He turned his back for a minute and they ate his fish!!!!!The weather was marginal but we had a good time!!! |

One more post: The stuffing 16oz sinkers comes from when I was a young boy out on a Virge's half day boat. I had caught a lingcod that obviously was the jackpot winner. Until two old drunken geezers brought up a smaller looking fish. When put on the balance it was heavier. When the deckhand took the fish down, out rolled a couple of large sinkers. I got my jackpot. And I agree that a captain's rules must be followed by all. That's just the way it has to be. |

Either way, if the crew was telling people it wasn't ok and 1 person did it, then that isn't really fair to the people who where following the "rules". As far as hitch hikers go, I allow them in the jackpot. Those are the hardest ones to get to the boat-without a hook in them. |

Sorry, I meant Leffingwell. I guess if winning the jackpot with a fish caught with a blue is bad, then stuffing 16 oz. sinkers down their throat must be out of the question. Cool off, just kidding. |

I'm in Camarillo and have been to the Sports Chalet. They said they cannot get the swim shads anymore, but they had about 20 bags in the store room. I bought 10. No more of the old squids. And, evidently I have been breaking the law for over 30 years fishing with blue fish. I really never thought about whether it was leagal or not. I just knew that it worked for large lingcod. Usually hitchhikers. So what's the difference in a hitchhiker? And they work for sheephead too, which I have caught some big black and red bucktoothed ones right there at Levingwell. Believe it or not. |

Maritime, I just bought some braded line for my downriggers that Scotty is producing. I saw it at the Fred Hall show in Long Beach and found it at Berry's in BC, Canada. Haven't had a chance to put it on yet, but they say that the auto stops you put on the line will stay in place and it's much easier to use. Bill |

Fellow fishmaster, Yep, Deke does have live bait. Last weekend it was 2-3" chovies with maybe an occasional 4" in there. They are getting bigger by the day, so hopefully he'll have some bigger bait this weekend. I'll be out of PSL doing another field trip on the Horizon. I'll post our "trawl" catches and I'll find out what he has for bait. I may bring my skiff down and fish before and after the field trip. best fishes, steve |

Looks like Dave can keep his Jackpot! and I don't have to be looking over my shoulder when, on occasion, I use a blue for bait. Hello, Yes, you can use blue rockfish for bait. Any marine species for which take is allowed may be used for bait (except tilapia), as long as the fish being used for bait meets any minimum size limit set for that specie, and is used during the open season for that specie. Also, the fish used for bait counts towards the daily bag and possession limit for that specie. An example: Prior to the implementation of the minimum size limit and the bag limit reduction to one fish, greenling were a popular live bait for shore-based anglers fishing for lingcod in northern California. Now, if you want to use a greenling to go for lings, that greenling being used for bait must be at least 12 inches in total length, and fills the one fish daily bag limit for greenling - no other greenling may be retained. I hope this answers your question. Best Regards, Ed Roberts Edgar W. I agree about the tuna. I think it was Wes that turned me on to that last year, trolling the candy squid. We were trolling around in kind of crappy weather picking up 1's and the boat next to us was getiing more. They told us about trolling the gulps, so we trolled 4 across w/an additional 1 on each corner fishing 25# and any leadhead with a candy squid. They didn't just bite the gulps, but also every other lure in the water, which wasn't getting bit before. Also, we started getting bait fish to the boat. Since the gulps were on 25#, the troll fish kind of turned into a "bait" fish because it took a while to get in. I believe other fish would follow these ones to the boat. Anyhow, it sure changed our day! |

Is there a difference??? I looked up Berkly Inshore Power Swim Shad on the Bass Pro Web site..The swim bait looks the same as the old swimbait. The newer bait has an eye added...There isn't a Candy Squid but the colors look good...I guess what is being said is these don't work as well as the old powerbait style??? |

Not a true statement Michelle... (@ least what I was told) I was fishin' off of a PSL party boat and had caught a blue. So the 1st thing I did was cut big strips off of it and put'em on my hooks. Well, the crew & capt. of the boat had a fit. Said it's illegal to use another fish caught for bait. And told me I had to wind up and take it off. Anyway, to make a long story short... I moved out-of-sight and fished my blue as bait. And on the way back in to port I was countin' my jackpot cash for the largest fish. (Yep ! A ling caught using the blue) |

Thanks Harrell for the input on a VHF base antenna. I thought I found a used 17.5 footer, but it turned out to be for marine CB, not VHF. Guess I'll have to spring for a new one. And, the biggest lingcod I've caught over the years has always been with about a 14 inch live bluefish hooked under the dorsal. I had a ling spool me 3 times with my light gear Tuesday, and then he stuck his head in the rocks and adios. It's fun isn't it? |

Chris, the Gulps that I'm talking about look just like a Kalin swim bait. If you know what that is. I'm heading down to LA tomorrow and hope to have some time to look around. I found the last ones at the Sport Chalet in Camarillo. Going down to an appointment and also to pick up a couple of used commercial stainless steel double sinks for fishies. |

I bought 10 packs of the purple "candy squid" swimbaits shortly after they were discontinued, and cherish every swimtail until it is chewed to absolute uselessness. For big reds I am sure that it outfishes live bait every time. They have also accounted for some big flatties and lings off Cayucos in 2005,and 2006.Its too bad that Berkeley discontined a lure which REALLY WORKS,when most of the "scent" stuff out there is worthless.I took a pack of Candy Squid and some 2oz leadheads with me to Ixtapa in April and caught a dorado,a roosterfish, and a small yellowfin (all on 1 swimtail)...The pangero literally begged me for the rest of my 5-pack..jeff |

John; When I use big sand dabs and 10" + mackeral the big advantage is they are almost never bothered by small rockfish. I nose hook them with a treble trap in the tail and they stay on the line really well. One downside to big lively bait is that they will run into the rocks to hide. |

A word about Berkley bait. (Gulp). I don't think anything "outfishes" live bait. I just think the Berkley bait stays on the hook. The smaller fish knock the live bait off before the bigger fish can get to it. When the fish are really shy, then live bait (in my opinion) will "outfish" any other type of bait. Except for dynamite, that works real good too. |

Trolled in dense fog today for zero MB salmon. Found little bait. Took time out to catch some reds and lings. The next couple of years should be great for lingcod. I must have caught 25 small ones. I did get one 40 incher. It was a fun battle on my old Penn squider. Water was decent until about 1:30pm, then it got alittle choppy. |

Jim G ..right out in front of San simeon creek is a great place for the kids to play and look for moon stones in the gravel beds..also a good spot for halibut inside the kelpline and along the edges of the big rocks that are everywhere in 5-25ft. Look for sand highways leading to open spots. Take some plastics and you'll catch huge grassbass there!!! There are roaming whiteseabass around at times..a fifty lber was caught there on the outside of the kelpline one year. Also the cove is really cool on low tide as you can walk deep into the caves on the point and see black abalones ( dont touch) and other cool stuff. I love that place!!! Gdoggsb |

sissy, thos older style Berkley power bait swim shads have been taken off the market. they did not have proof that they worked so they stoped making them. your best luck in finding them is calling around to the small shops that carry Berkley stuff. they do have some new stuff out that looks like it is very good if you can get ahold of it. try the new salt water gulp swim shads they are $5.99 for 3 but seem to work very well for there money. as for the old you can only find them on the black market and im not selling mine. But hey we still have trat bait for HALF OFF at virgs is you want to pick up some of that. |

Great info on your trawl net findings, Steve. I've been jonesin' to drag a line around PSL off my 'Yak in search of a legal 'butt. I just hope these Great Whites that Sissy is yearning to see only go after the "non-fishing" yakkers!! LOL! |

Fellow anglers, Central Coast Salmon Enhancement is looking for about 100 lbs. of whole salmon for our BBQ next Saturday at PSL. Our usual sources are not responding at this point. Anyone know of a source? Any commercial guys out there who can help us out? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Will |

Hello all, Could someone help please! I'm looking for a reliable Volvo Penta certified shop. I have a 98' 5.0 with an SX Cobra outdrive. Gimble bearing started making noise last time out. I'm in Pismo till tomorrow. This could not have come at a worse time and I'm sure all the shops are backed up 3 to 4 weeks. Any help will be very appreciated. PismoG |

Took some home-school kids out on the Pacific Horizon today (PSL). We pulled a trawl-net along the bottom right off of Avila in 15-40' water for 20 minutes and caught some cool critters; including a bunch of anchovies and a 14" halibut, plus a starry flounder, small sanddabs, staghorn sculpin, surf perch, spot prawns, and other random bottom creatures. I'm guessing the halibut are in if the chovies are in shallow water (plus the shaker prooves it). I will be out Thursday to see if I can find them. We also saw lots of bait/birds crashing bait all around PSL. Good things are happening. best fishes, steve |

I'll go with the white shark. Look at the cresent shape of the top of the bite and imagine the porpoise twisting to pull free. OUCH! That smarts! Wish the salmon would show back up. Will |

I sincerely hope that the dolphin was killed by a white. I don't like to see a dolphin killed, but we really need a few big whites in this area. Way too many kayakers. Just kidding. Too many seals. I agree about the "Gulp" bait. I can't find the older anchovie style, and I wonder if it was too effective and removed from the market. All you had to do was wave it around over the water and the big reds would jump into the boat. Well, kinda like that. |

Dave F; So you are saying that if I take 6 live mackerel and catch 6 lings with a ten pound average that you can catch 30 with a 12 pound average in the same time. Just kidding, we used to catch big lings on polished copper pipes filled with lead and a treble hook at the bottom. Bodean; I fish them live so doubt that the oil is much of a factor and lingcod are ambush preditors which usually hit the mackerel the instant it gets to the bottom. I have also used live blues which work but nothing like mackerel. Of course when I use blues they have to come out of my ten fish limit. As for the dolphin, it looks like the work of Lizzy Borden but I will go with Steve and the biologist. |

Well, it just looked exactly like a thigh that I saw a few years ago that got the prop treatment, except that there was alot more screaming in that case... Ended the same way, though. |

Could be that a ship with a enormous prop with no pitch, slow turning, just happened to cross the path of a dolphin that had to much to drink and didnt know witch way was up and got wacked, but I doubt it. looks like a shark to me. To bad they aren`t doing a better job on the seals. |

My bet is with the biologists, aircraft dont flap there tails up and down to fly. |

Or it could have realized that it was in too close and tried to veer away at the last second like an aircraft banking into a turn... |

FYI...the dolphin was examined by biologist who concluded it was most likely a great white shark...but it was definitely a shark. Look at the pic again. The bite is circular and you can see where the bite/scrape marks changed as the dolphin tried to escape. |

Still it could have been wacked by a propeller after it was dead. |

The 9,12 & 15 Lb lings we got on Friday from moonstone all spit up 5 to 7" blues. Seems like everyone I take out with me insist on using bait. Macks, anchovies, squid & sards. I'm regularly catching 5 fish to their 1 using 1 oz. leadheads with the 'GULP' anchovie (Sold @ WallMart in 3-pack's for just under $6. Caught limits of rockcod & lings in less than 60 ft. of water using just 1 gulp bait. And NO, folks... I'm not a rep for the Berkely (Gulp) Co. I'm just your average fisherman going out to have a good time and bring home a little fish meat. |

Looks more like a classic propeller strike to me. A GW shark bite would have a semi-circular pattern of triangle-shaped cuts, or a missing semi-circular chunk altogether. No, I think this dolphin was run over by a boat. Very rare also I believe, because dolphins are pretty darn smart and generally don't make such mistakes. Eric Endersby |

Up in Big Sur a adult Grey Whale washed up on the beach. The local California Condors are feasting on the remains. Biologist believe it could supply them with food for months!
Then, last week, a Cuvier's Beaked Whale washed up on the Beach just South of Piedras Blancas Lighthouse. It is a very rare whale. A fellow from the SB Natural History Museum was there to take the head and do an autopsy. He has been doing this for 35 years and has heard of only 3 along the entire coast of Californa! Cut open its belly and it had thousands and thousands of squid beaks! Amazing. The smell was impressive too!!!
