John, Teacher's Pet, I was wondering if you had been out lately. Have any of you buddies had any luck as of late? We're going to fish this holiday weekend weather permitting. Hope to see you back out there. Ed & Sheryl

Tree Doc.
Heres a good one from Idaho about fish and game.
As you know I spent the last 2 months there, I fished the derby in lake Pend Oreille, I have a flyer in my hands says go fishing win cash, what it means is , that for every RAINBOW AND LAKE TROUT you catch they give you a $1.00 lottery scratch tickets, and then they scan the heads you may have a $100.00 or a $1000.00 winner ,this program will go on for 8 months, In addition starting next month on June 15 they start a one month program called the PREDATOR derby every fish you catch over 18 inches is worth $10.00 a piece, so ponder that BS , you think CA FUN AND GAMEs dept IS SCREWED up.
This lake holds the largest rainbows and they want to KILL all of them to save the kokanee a little non native fish, make you wonder, guess they all went to the same school to be STUPID, it will kill the fishery for the big bows that the tourists come to catch, but what do us fisherman know?
Just thought i would pass this stuff along, by the way I have over 20 lottery tickets coming.

Fished out of Morro Tues. It was an excellent Rock cod day. We limited out on Lings. The blues were thick and pushing bait out of the water. We were up by cambria and i caught an octopus on my Jig. we hooked it up with a live bait hook and slip sinker and caught two of the biggest lings I have ever seen.

Tree Doc, we just had some white bass for dinner. Very good table fish. Actually the spotted bass are becomming predominate. The whites are much larger this year. The spawn with all the fish has been strange because of the weather. I caught a spot the other night that still was full of eggs.

harrel,
i don't think that water is holding any fish yet. like you said, it's just solar warming. i fished down that way last week and the water was dirty and cold(53) ... it would warm a few degrees durring the day then back down at night..
it looks like any warm water that might have been moving in is going to get pushed away by the NW gale winds expected for the next few days

Dave,
What do you do with the White Bass after you catch 'em. We used to kill 'em and throw 'em back but I guess that fishery is probably so inundated by now it would be a useless attempt.

Do you eat them?

Right you are Will. The 1908 and the donut are 60 degrees and the rodriguez/arguello canyon area is more. But, it could be solar heating since we have not had any wind for a few days. Starting tomorrow through the weekend there are strong winds forecast. It will be interesting to see what the temps are after the winds stop next week. If it holds over sixty degrees the LFT may not be far behind.

My buddy BJ hooked up four salmon out of Morro Bay on Saturday and landed two in the 15 to 20 lb range. He was a little north of the Rock in 230 feet of water. He said there were very compact bait balls and he was hit right after going through them. White/green spoon behind a dodger and green Krocs trolled at 80 ft and 120 ft. I'll be out there soon as weather and work permit.

I forgot to post this when I received this from DFG the other day. I know there are a few other Perch Jerkers out there so this will definitely be of interest to you.....

The California Fish and Game Commission took action at its February 3, 2006 meeting to increase the recreational surfperch bag and possession limit from five to 20 surfperch in the aggregate, with not more than 10 surfperch of any one species. This limit is separate from the 20-fish daily limit of shiner surfperch. This increase to the bag limit, however, does not apply to waters of the San Francisco and San Pablo bays, where the limit will remain five fish in the aggregate, not including shiner surfperch.

This regulation change becomes effective Sunday, May 21, 2006.

Section 28.59 of Title 14, California Code of Regulations, has been amended to read as follows:

§28.59. Surfperch.
(a) For purposes of this Section, the term “surfperch” refers to all species of the family Embiotocidae, in any combination.
(b) Open season: Open all year, except surfperch may not be taken or possessed by a person in San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay between April 1 and July 31, inclusive. Shiner surfperch (Cymatogaster aggregata) are exempt from this seasonal closure and may be taken and possessed up to their daily bag limit in these areas during the closure period.
(c) Daily bag limits.
(1) In San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, the aggregate limit is five surfperch, not including shiner surfperch. For all other areas, the aggregate limit is 20 surfperch, not including shiner surfperch. Not more than 10 surfperch may be of any one species.
(2) The special limit for shiner surfperch is 20, which may be taken or possessed in addition to the overall daily bag limit of 20 finfish defined in subsection 27.60(a) and the special limits defined in subsection 27.60(b).
(d) Minimum size: redtail surfperch, ten and one-half inches total length. All other surfperch, none.

ALBACORE!

As stated, things are starting to go out of San Diego. I've been closely watching the counts on the Sporties and some Private Boats. Have a couple trips set up for late June and late July but sure hope we see them here this year!

The seiners are on the Blue Fin and working their way up. Hopefully that doesn't screw things up.

Fingers crossed for a Central Coast bite!

Silver Salmon ID;

If you look close when they are still in the water you will see that they look bluish green and will not flash purple like a King. Also it will be hard to see spots on their back where kings have larger and more prominet spots. Like Ray says leave them in the water and roll the hook out. Out of the water the gums are the best ID. Silvers will have white gums at the base of their teeth but can still have a lot of black(dark grey) it their mouth. Other features; no spots on lower half of their tail and the tail is ribbed (not smooth like a king).

Albacore;
Carl, I have been watching the SST/Chlorophyll shots and the temp is not quite there yet although the water is pretty clean. My guess is the middle/end of june. They are getting a few out of SD at about 100 miles or so.

Steve, no jumps on the silver but man it had an attitude. Fought like a fish much larger than it was. Disappointed it won't be on the grill.

Am hoping salmon fishers are aware of the differences and it is bad to net the fish; best to make the call prior. Netting removes the slime coat and other damage further reducing possibility of survival. Anyone know if there are clear goals, that when met, would allow a re-opening of the coho (silver salmon) fishery? I'm thinking not, given the trouble this state has with goldfish bowls.

Note: Got an e-mail notice there will be MLPA meeting Thursday 25 May. Get ready to be locked out of your favorite rockfish spots until some clue-less politico (or so-called "Blue Ribbon Task Force")decides if/when you should be allowed to fish there--if ever. Kalifornia indeed. Cloud out

PS Blackie--fishing for surfperch with BLOODY SAND WORMS likely next on their agenda. Emergency action to ban them immediately from all Central Coast beaches

There are now 70,000 salmon in the bay at PSL. In a couple of years you will be catching them. Thank you Central Coast Salmon Enhancement.
I have a good feeling that we will be seeing more salmon being caught later this season also. I'll be giving them a try all the way through July.
Tight lines to all.

Ray, that is way cool...did it jump? Silvers in Oregon usually jump a few times when I caught them. I remember we used to get into them pretty good around here when I was a kid. Bummer, they are fun to fish for!
Harrel, Thanks for the tip. That is one of the bad things about pinners for bait...I mean catching smelt, thier mouth is the size of your pinkie!!!
Fished PSL in the skiff yesterday. Slow-trolled bait around the Pea-patch for 1 keeper halibut and a few short lings. Moved inside @ noon for 4 shakers in all the usual places. Lots of shorts around right now, please don't net these fish as it often splits thier tails...which is bad!
I'll be gone for a month...hope to read some good fishing reports while I'm gone.
See you back out on the water in late June.
Best fishes,
steve

Joy Lyn Rock Fish and Silver Salmon Report for Saturday:
Easy limits on rockfish/off Pecho/70-90'. Mostly nuclear blues but two YT RF and one big red. Fun on 6 & 10 lb gear. Gulp Swim Grubs on 1oz leadheads.

Went trollin for salmon straight off same area being careful to stay inside 240', but was right on edge when bit. #5 Chrome Croc 85' OTW, ended up being a *very* nice silver--about 8-9 lbs, fought like a mad dog, released. Anglers be sure to check your salmon before landing or the Warden or CG could give you a very unpleasant surprise. Remember silvers (coho) have white gums instead of black (chinook); other subtle differences.

Great time fishing with wife and daughter. Cloud out

For all you tomcod eaters, there's something you should know. Although they are edible, the fish have exess iodine in their systems. There is one sack in the stomach and one right behind the head. If you are going to eat them, filet them quickley and leave an extra inch of meat behind the head to avoid cutting into the iodine area. Fished south of morro saturday for limits of reds up to 8 lbs. On the way back, saw massive balls of bait off the shell mound in 100-122 feet of water. The water was dirty and 53-55 degrees. Dropped in the gear for an hour with no success. Probably a time of day thing but the area did look salmonish.

Went out of Avila today at 1:30 PM. Fished strait off the green light in 130 feet of water. It was like a lake and we had 2 limits of mostly reds in about 90 minutes. Back in at 3:30 PM. Dissapointed to know the launch closes at 4:00. I tried a new bait that was killing them. It was a purple "yum flash tube" with salt crystal attractant. It's made for bass. I think I got it at K-mart or Big Five. I fished it up the line from a ledhead that I tried various colored scampi on. caught nine out of ten of the fish on the tube. My partner was fishing a sardine jig on the bottom with the tube on top and caught 8 of the ten fish on the tube. For those of you who remember the Toro tube it looks like that. Pretty consistant results. We have a winner!

Good point, however, if you have a "shall we say" high tolerance for heat, pepper oil brings out the fishes individual flavor, ever try the "Thai Riffic Pompano at Tai Riffic? Wow HOT BUT GOOD ( and maybe I'm just nuts, but who cares?")

When I was a kid we used to catch "tomcod" off the ventura pier, it was thought to be a "junk" fish then, Times change, I've had whole fried in pepper oil "tomcod" that was fantastic!

"Of all the things that I have lost I miss my mind the most" !
Please ignore my three previous posts.

What we generally catch that we call "tomcod" are white croakers (just like Steve said) and they are cousins of the So.Cal. croakers.. They are a nuisance fish but do make good bait. Never ate one so don't know what they taste like.

Oops! didn't know I double posted . They are caught from point Sal north and not caught in So. Cal. The White Croaker is caught in So. Cal. and I think we catch them here also.

Mike M;
That would be no. These tomcod are pretty much trash fish. All though I think the small ones are good bait. Don't know what they taste like because never tried one. They are a true cod and according to the book often confused with a white croaker.

Thanks Chip.

Steve;
I have heard that if you are catching tomcod, when fishing for halibut, better move because tomcod disappear when halibut are in the area. I know I have never caught tomcod and halibut in the same area.

Harrell, my phone is the I58 model. Don't know the output. Nextel is good for the two way but like most services, if you go over you minutes they gouge you. I'm sure all the companies conspire to do this instead of charging a nominal rate per minute for overage. Nonetheless, I have unlimited incoming, 800 outgoing including nationwide long distance, free nights, weekends (like most), unlimited radio (which is great for my business and crews) for about $80/month. I don't really recommend any cellular service as I think they are a bunch of crooks with the overage charges.

Greetings,
Fished PSL early this morning in the skiff. Dragged pinner chovies off of Port Beach and Avila for about 3 hours (6-9 a.m.) for several huge smelt and wide open white croakers (tomcod). Don't think I had a halibut on.
Worked the field trip on the Pac Horizon from 9-3 p.m. Had about 60 5-6th graders from SM out on the boat. Did two trawl sets from the creek mouth out to the end of the Poly pier. No 'buts the first set, but we got two the second...including a 25" fish!
Fished the breakwall from 3-6 pm and caught two shorts and 2 lings. Super windy this afternoon, couldn't fish very well.
We'll be out again tomorrow to catch a keeper flattie.
best fishes,
steve

Chip;
Do you know what the power out of both units are. Generally transmit is more difficult than receive on the hand sets because of the low output power usually around 600 mw.
Is nextel competively priced with the rest of providers?

I had a Motorola bag phone too until it crapped out and it worked great. It was 3 watt so it should have worked better. I just recently picked up a power amp which is 5 watt output and 18db gain on the receive but have not been out very far with it yet. Just waiting for the LFT !

Harrel, my nextel two way has worked back to MB harbor at 50 miles even. The cell is 40-45 at best. The overcast days seem to transmit better than sunny ones. The cell is only good to 38 on sunny days. Don't know why the discrepency exists for cell or two way since they both use the same towers I think.

Thanks Dustin. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I have a booster that solves my house problem so I will stick with cell one .
I see that they are getting some albacore out of SD. I think by the middle of June we should be looking pretty good. The water is a lot cleaner than last year and as we know a lot more bait. Too bad they aren't here yet the ocean was calm all up and down the coast today.

Michele,
Very stand up offer on the free cleaning and galley tab. I own a business over in Paso Robles, and that type of customer service speaks volumes to Virg's and Darby should be proud. Cant wait to share info out on the tuna grounds again this season. Will be in touch

Friends: Just a little tip for you folks who live in SLO county, but not in Morro Bay. If you like rock fishing, but are unsure of the water conditions out of Morro Bay ... you might want to see what the water looks like before hauling your boat over to MB and launching. Maybe you want to see if there are whitecaps on the water ... or whether it is glassy calm.

Here is the tip: Get on the Internet and go to surfline.com

Then you need to look for the icon at the top that says "cam & reports". Click on this icon and go to Northern California, and then to Morro Bay. You can get streaming video either close-up or at a distance showing the mouth of the harbor entrance and surf around the rock .... might be helpful on a day of questionable weather .... Just a thought for you computer folks.

Central Coast Salmon Enhancement has fish arriving tomorrow at PSL. We will be hosting a BBQ at the base of the pier at PSL starting at 11:00AM. It was going to be a salmon BBQ but guess what? There are no local commercial salmon available. Guess that is why we all need to support CCSE. We will have chicken instead and Firestone beer. Hope many of you can make it over to see us and to see the fish delivered to the pens. Thanks for all your help.

CELL PHONE COVERAGE OFFSHORE

I have Cell One and it works great out as far as 40-50 miles, even without an aux antenna or booster. But, it sucks at my house on the Nipomo mesa.
Does anyone have experience with the other providers offshore such as Verizon, AT&T and etc. If I could get good coverage offshore I would change companies.
