Nice. I was in Peru in Sept, but I spent time visiting Machu Pichu and in Lima and didn't get a chance to fish. I will on my next trip there in 09. I hope to fish in the Amazon.

got a call today, the tuna showed up a couple days ago en mass! Just my luck now that I'm back in the States. Sounds like all the fishermen in Mancora are going to have a very drunken weekend....must of been a phase of the moon, well I'm glad they showed up, wish I would have been there.

Spent 10 days in Mancora, there wasn't much going on. The commercial fleet (net boats) was having a very difficult time catching. The jig boats from Cabo Blanco and el ñuro were doing well on jigs. Seems the tuna were there feeding on surface during the day, and would sound to the deep at night, so gillnetters couldn't catch them. I fished one day and picked up 5 YFT 7 to 9 kgs. I saw one come in at Cabo Blanco tip the scale at 135kgs, I'll try to post the picture I got when I can figure out how to reduce the size.

Jocelyn, thanks for all the info.

Do you know any about the fishing at Lake Titicaca?

I'll definitely be doing some kind of fishing in Peru in Sept., just not sure where yet. I'll keep doing some research online.

Just saw an ad in www.vivamancora.com from a company called Pacifico Adventures in Los Organos. They have 2 boats a 28' Wellcraft and a 22' panga. They might be a OK for fishing offshore, the pics look good anyway, but I don't know anything else about them. Their web page is www.pacificoadventures.com. I'll look em up when I return to Peru.

Mitch

I don't think there are any peacock bass near Machu Picchu. You might find some trout in the local rivers. Peacock bass will be in places like Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos...jungle. Maldonado is only an hour from Cusco by plane.

There is good fishing for small halibut and sea bass on the beaches south of Lima all the way to the border with Chile. That's what I'm told.

The best fishing for me is North of Paita to Ecuador border. The water is warm and the variety of species amazing. The cold water from the South mixes with the warm Equatorial water. The Mancora bank is one of the most prodctive spots in the world.

It's dificult to make a sportfishing trip in Peru. Someone has to be there year round to keep catches coming in and reporting regularly. There just aren't any real sport boats (not yet anyway)and no understanding of sportfishing. That said if you are adventurous you will find ways to do it.

The Lady Victoria (from Punta Sal) has been sold to a couple of young guys that intend to put it to work out of Zorritos. Hope they do it right, there are some great bottom fishing spots just off of Zorritos, lots of grouper and cabrilla.

I don't have any pics of the large Big Eye tuna. Trino has several but the quality is not very good. The position of the fish in some pics make it look more like a porpoise. But it was certainly a Big Eye. I'll have to bring my digital camera next time and show them how to position the fish for the pic.

Good luck catching peacok bass.

Wow, that's a big one! Do you have any pictures?

I'll be back to Peru in Sept. (but not Mancora). I'll be going to Machu Picchu. I want to get in some peacock bass fishing.

Jocelyn, where do you think are some of the best fishing opportunities in Peru?

I was in Mancora last week on business, didn't have time to fish. I did talk with some friends that told me there were tuna schools at 40+ miles, all school fish 15-30 lbs. But 2 weeks ago my friend Trino Llenque picked up one solitary Big Eye Tuna. He had set his gear 9 miles off Mancora. The fish was the biggest he ever caught....weighed in at 200kgs....that's 440lbs. WOW!!! Would have beat the world record 435lbs (from 1957 Cabo Blanco)but it was picked up on commercial gear.
It's good to know they still prowl those waters. Just need a decent boat to go out and look for them.

Found out there is a sportboat located in Punta Sal, about 20 mins by road North of Mancora, it's a 30' fiberglass boat with a small diesel, all safety gear and licensed by Peruvian coast guard for 8 people, has all tackle for inshore and offshore. Owner's name is Pete Kemble, he's from UK. It's a good option for fishing in Northern Peru.

Fished today 20 miles in front of Punta Sal. Picked up 38 YFT from 20-30 lbs each. All deep on live bait. The current changed as the day progressed and the water got colder, pushing North. Then the bite shut off. As we came in to Mancora there were bonito crashing everywhere, and bait getting picked up by the frigates.

Don't know if I'll go back out, I have to go back to work.

Fished yesterday (Monday) out in front and towards Punta Sal. We were about 12-16 miles out all day. A little bumpy in the afternoon but not bad. It's a lot worst near Cabo Blanco. Anyway, the fish didn't go. We picked up 3 YFT, footballs. Enough for lunch and dinner. But nothing else. Today I saw lot's of bait working 1/2 mile off Mancora, probably macs, water is cold nearshore. I'll be here a few more days. The fish will show sooner or later.

Was in Cabo Blanco today.
The wind was blowing early and the fleet was on it's way back in by noon. It was blowing a good 20 knots on the beach, so offshore I didn't want to be. The guys that came in had an assortment of school fish yellowfin and skipjacks. I spoke with a couple of fishermen that had some 100 plus pounders but weren't able to land them. So there are some nice fish around, just have to deal with the wind and look for the toads.

Went fishing today. Yesterday I was at the wharf and saw a boat bring in 2 blues (130 lbs and 425 lbs) and a striped marlin about 100 lbs. They had all the skippies you wanted, and about 30 yellowfin most in the mid teens. Two YFT were 105 and 115lbs. So I had to go out today. Trolled out by acapulco til 1 pm. Had an assortment of skipjacks and YFT, nothing bigger than 18 lbs. Saw one striped marlin but no go. Tomorow I'm going to Cabo blanco to look at a boat.

Good to hear from you Alex

Been in Mancora a few days now, seems there haven't been any fish for 2 weeks. The air temp is cool, low 60's at night and mid 70's during the day, water is around 60 degrees, no wind to speak of. Last Sunday some boats took off for Acapulco, 18 miles off the beach, there were yellowfin in the 40 to 60 pound range. That's a good sign. But I guess the bite was only a couple days. I'll report if the water warms up and I fish again.

Got an e-mail from the new owners of the boat Cristina. Seems Alex sold the boat a few months ago. Well the new owners name is Rene de Picker, owner of the Hanga Roa Bungalows in Los Organos where the Cristina is moored.

A friend from Panama fished with them a couple weeks ago and told me Alex no longer ran the boat. He told me that the fishing was dificult at best, the water was a cold 65 degrees. That's a great temp for Albacore, almost too hot, but not for Marlin, although I've seen Striped Marlin in colder water.

Well as often happens in Northern Peru the currents changed and the Ecuatorial Current started pushing South this last week. Rene tells me he was into several tuna and a Wahoo, and did spot a Marlin that followed the boat but didn't take the bait. And that yesterday they sent out a charter that came back with an 87kg (that's 191 lbs) Yellowfin tuna. Not a world record by any means, but it can certainly put the hurt on you.

Tha't the interesting thing off Northern Peru. One day the cold Humbolt Current pushes North and the next day the warm Ecuatorial Current pushes South. Makes for some tough fishing but rewarding when the currents are favorable. You just have to be there when they are on the chew.

It's Friday and I'm back in California, gotta go back to work. I fished last Sunday for one final trip. The weather was great again, hardly any breeze, no swell, we trolled in front of Mancora 10-12 miles and towards Punta Sal. The current was pushing hard to the S/W. Water was green. Never had any great bite, just picked up one here one there all on jigs. Not a bad day at all, we ended up with 27 YFT, 15-35 lbs. Lot's of manta rays around, saw 3 sailfish, no dorados.
But it's over I'm back in California for awhile.

Fished yesterday, jigged up some nice caballito for bait in front of Vichayito, trolled out in front of Mancora and up to Punta Sal, 8-10 miles off the beach. Had 3 YFT on a jig stike, all about 20-25 lbs,. Trolled for half an hour for nothing and had a strike that almost spooled me, 45 minutes later had a 55 lbs YFT, soaked some baits and landed a 35 lb YFT. Great weather this week, a bit of breeze on the outside and to the South, but some of the best weather I've seen here.

I'm back in Mancora for a few days. As luck would have it yellowfin made a showing last Friday off el Ñuro (Cabo Blanco). So I went out yesterday and picked up 8 yellowfin (15-18 lbs) and one wahoo (50 lbs). Went out again this morning early and just got in at 10 am, had some motor problems, but we did manage to pick up 3 yellowfin 12 to 15 lbs. Just schoolies but we'll keep lookin for the bigger ones. Only an hour out from Mancora, that's about 5 miles out on these boats, as close as I ever caught tuna around here.

Well all I can tell you is I have a hard time loading pics on here, but I'm no computer wiz. I do know that you need to reduce them quite a bit to work on here. Maybe when Larry get's the new website up it will be more friendly for low tech guys like me.

Fished the Amazon tributaries 20 years ago but didn't enjoy it, too many mosquitos and other insects.....and I never caught a peacock or any other good fish.

Didn't meet Alex, but met Cristina herself when we arrived in the a.m. at the boat.

I'm sure I'll be back in Mancora one day and we can hook up. On my next trip to Peru, I might like trying for some peacocks in the Amazon. Have you ever done that?

I'll post a few more pics right here, but can you help me out with the proper image code. Man, I'm pretty good with that kind of thing, but can't get it right here.

Sereno's phone # (073)85-84-33 in Mancora, If you don't get him there, just walk down on the pier in Mancora and ask for him, he's usually there mid morning if he's not out. Don't forget getting skunked happens everywhere. Good luck

Mitch,
Bring your own gear (rods, reels, tackle etc..) Feb. is summer down there and you'll be around 3-4 degrees South Lat. So the sun is brutal when offshore, bring long sleeves, long pants, a hat and shades, and of course sun block.

The inshore fishing is pretty slow, and the the guys that will rent you skiffs will want to take you to small local rocks. It's ok if you like boat rides, and you might catch a small grouper, trigger fish, or jacks.

If you have time go offshore, the seas should be calm that time of year. You can find plenty of Dorado (perico), Yellowfin tuna, Skipjack, and you might hook up a marlin.....

Just remember the boats are small and slow. Go to the wharf in Mancora and look for Sereno, he's usually there working, I fish with him or his father-in-law Trino.

Anymore question come up be glad to help. And if you do go fishin post your results here.

Jocelyn,

I'm heading from the US to a beach hotel in Mancora in February. Do you have any leads or tips on catching anything offshore or even inshore?

My wife is originally from Lima, and I did some handline fishing down there on my last trip in Feb. 04. But I'm looking for some bigger fish this time. :-)

Thanks for any advice.

Fished Monday and Tuesday. Trolled some feathers out front of Mancora, about 8 miles. Picked up 2 dorado and a handful of YFT, footballs. It was enough for lunch for a few days. The water was green, wind was light, but I did come back before afternoon on both days. Didn´t spot any marlin or swords. Heading back to California tonight.

Sunday 12 Nov

Just got back from Cabo Blanco. Light breeze this morning mild temps. Should blow this PM 18-20 knots. The good report is saw the commercials bring in 2 striped marlin and 1 Black (est. 500 lbs) at el Ñuro. Talked to Alex ( MV Cristina ), told me the marlin were cruising 3 miles off Organos las week when the Current was pushing South. Spotted lots of humbacks working 2-3 miles offshore fron El Ñuro.

Im going to try to get out in the morning and catch some lunch if the wind stays down.

Robert,
I just arrived in Mancora yesterday morning, I think I slept about 20 hours after 2 days of travel. Mornings are calm, but we´ re getting 20 plus knots in the PM. I´m going to the wharf this afternoon to see whats up.

The charter boat situation is spartan at best. The Cristina is an adecuate boat in fair weather, and Alex the owner is is a great guy. You can contact him on page at vivamancora.com , his boat is in Organos about 10 minutes South of Mancora.

You can charter the Fantasia in Punta Sal. Thats the only other true charter boat on the Peruvian coast. Punta Sal is about 20 minutes to the North of Mancora.

In Mancora you can go to the wharf and contact Sereno, a good friend of mine, and fish on his panga. But you need lots of sun block and not mind rough weather in a small slow boat, and of course you need all your own gear. He´s a good fisherman, but like I said it is very spartan. He´ll put you on fish. I can put you in touch with him if you like. I´m not a broker, just like to fish.

Hey which hotel does your fiend own,
you can reach me at my mail or here.

Jocelyn,
Thanks for the info. I have many questions about the area. I live and fish in Panama and have a friend who owns a hoatel in Mancora. He has offered a room to me for no money, so I want to take advantage and come down to fish for awhile. What is the charter boat situation? I know in the old days, there were many boats available, but after a search, I only found 2, Christina and one more. Please tell me what might be available. I can bring all my own gear, that's not a problem. If you would want to contact me off board, I can call you at your convenience.

Black marlin, as well as blues and striped, still prowl the waters of Cabo Blanco. I've found them on many trips offshore, my best was raising 3 in one day. The commercials bring them in regularly. Best time is Sept to Oct, if the Equatorial current is pushing South. When the Humbolt current pushes North the waters are cooler and the blacks tend to be to the North in Ecuador. During those times you can find swords and striped marlin. Dec thru April the waters are generally warmer and less WINDY, you shouldn't have a problem finding a black during those months. Hope this helps, you can always contact me here if you have any other questions. I'm flying to Peru tomorow, I'll be in Mancora on Friday, will try to post what's going on.

Jocelyn,

Are there any black marlin being caught around cabo blanco any more? Looking to make a trip there in January.
