Friends:

Yes, in 2007 and 2008 we are scheduled to get seven months fishing (May-Nov.) out to 40 fathoms. And thanks for the kind words from Steve Moore, Eric Endersby and Jim Martin. Yes, the PFMC meeting was a real roller coaster. It is amazing that such monumental decisions affecting many peoples lives are decided in such a hap-hazard way.

It will be good to get back out on the water this week for a little fishing....

Refer to Mel's post about 18 or 19 down the line. I think it's 7 months @ 40 Fathoms

John, that water at the Davidson has held up both night and day and through the wind for several days now, but..the computer models don't show any let up in the wind for a while. Might be a little let up thurs/fri.

Tim, just stay tuned to this site and you will know exactly where to go when the LFT show. Like John said we share numbers (lat/lon).

Been watching that too, John. Last night's shot looks good though out of MY range. I'll have to watch and wait while you guys with the big gas tanks make those runs!

Question regarding our local "go to" spots. Got the Davidson, "1908", and the "Donut" down but am unfamiliar with locations of some others like the "Weenie", etc. TempBreak is loaded with all the hot spots down south but lacks those in our region. Can anyone help with some location numbers or approximate areas of those recognized locations that are typically called out if and when the LFT's and hopefully BFT's show? I'm working with Chart 18700.

Thanks in advance....

Joe, please keep tabs on the fish for me. Fiesta will be salmon fishing Tues. Don't catch your limits before 6:00 and go in, I may need to follow you around some. Good job, and thanks for your reports (and fish).

Very good red fishing @ Haystacks today, deep and shallow. Weather BAD.

Great morning out of Morro Bay. The water was a little lumpy but settled down for awhile - just long enough to get some salmon. After several false starts and some silvers, I did end up with a limit of kings (a big 2). Bite was quite active in the morning with lots of shakers, knock-downs and fiesty fish. Silvers above 60 feet and kings below that. Fished alongside three other boats and they were catching, too. Big producer was green and white hootchie and green flasher but others worked, too. I heard the bite really dropped off after the tide change. Most the the action was 180-220 feet of water near the old radar buoy. If you fish, make sure you check for silvers.

Melvin! Good to see you at the PFMC meeting last week. You did a great job, both in providing input from Morro Bay and giving your public testimony. A big part of the battle was won when the Council adopted the allowable catches. The Groundfish Advisory Panel (GAP) and members of the public stayed on topic during public comment and worked together to get the results.

Salmon report,

The bite was wide open today,
9 Salmon, 8 - 10 Lbs. in twenty five minutes, 20 to 40 feet down.
Plus 12 beautiful reds.
Talked with one boat an hour later in the harbor, they headed out to the spot, showed back up by the time we finished cleaning our catch, with limits.

Best regards,
Jsoeph & Tami Anderton

As a person that has spent many hours in council meetings fighting for our right to fish on the Central Coast, I can tell you that Mel has had a very gruelling week. Spending a week at a coucil meeting is one of the biggest roller coaster rides that a person can take. It is hard to believe that our seasons are put together in such a inefficient way. This Meeting was especially tough. I know. Mel was calling me several times a day updating me on the roller coaster ride that he was on. In the end I believe that Mel did an incredible job representing us on the Central Coast. If you are a member of CCFCC your money was well spent this week. Remember that Mel was only paid out of pocket expenses through CCFCC and his expertise comes free. Mel I thank You and hope that you have a restful Fathers Day with your family. Thanks, Steve Moore Patriot Sportfishing. Support CCFCC

Fished Moonstone on Friday for limits of reds & lings. (12' Klamath)
Forecast was callin' for 20 to 35 mph winds. We took a chance and launched @ 6:15 am. Seas were sloppy with lg swells but it laid down & was very fishable. We stayed out until after 2:00. Only 1 other boat (kayak) joined us for a great day on the water. Fishin' is great !

Friends: REPORT FROM FOSTER CITY

It is all pretty complicated, but I will try to summarize:

The fishermen worked their butts off to come up with a "consensus" proposal for the whole state. Under this proposal, we would be within allowable limits for every species of fish and each of the five state zones was happy with the season. Our zone (Pt. Conception to Pt. Sur) would get 7 months of fishng in 07 and 08 (from May 1 to November 30). Fish and Game then tried to stab us all in the back by saying that they did not like our proposal and wanted our region and Monterey Bay to only have 6 months (June-November). This would be intolerable for our area ... opening on June 1.

The recreaional fishermen decided to try to get the council to vote AGAINST the CDFG proposal and accept the fishermen's proposal. Everyone said that it was a waste of time to buck CDFG. I said we had nothing to lose and let's go on the attack. During the public comment late yesterday, we all testified that the fishermen's proposal was best for the entire state and that it should be accepted.

A member of the PFMC council (Roger Thomas) made a motion to accept our proposal and reject the proposal of CDFG. That motion passed on a 7-5 vote ... and we WON!

It is not a done-deal, because this still has to be approved the Cal Fish and Game Commission, but I doubt that the Commission will go against the PFMC. We should get 7 months during 2007 and 2008, from May to November. It is a good improvement over the current season.

On a separate note, the Council agreed to give our area another month this year (2006), so we will be able to have groundfish angling in October.

Overall, I am happy with the work of the PFMC and we have seasons coming up that we can live with.

Dustin,
I did the tourney thing around here for a couple-a-few years, mid 90's. Got to be too much like work and no fun so I chucked it! Partner just bought a new Skeeter so we go out a couple times a month to poke at Bass. Santa Margarita has ALWAYS been a brutal lake to me. In my book, you had a banner day on the water for that lake.

I just realized by re-reading your original post that you fished the day after we did but we weren't out till 11 a.m. till early evening. My fish came out of 5-10'. Had we been there earlier I'd have been all over that Top Water bite!

Thanks for the info!

Stuey .... Sorry about the Lake thing ...Some family issues and was on the road to Ventura and Long Beach the last two weeks. Picked up the Rods from Mark this morning out at Harrolds place ....... Looks like our good friends Mark and Dick just stepped up to the exact boat Timmy is fishing. SWEET RIDE! Let me know when your want to go put the "True Pioneer" to the test ... You know I love the Graylight .. I'm there!

Harrold ... We will keep in touch ... the usual suspects will be out burning fuel in the next few weeks ...

Tim .... That lake has been the death of me since i started fishing tournys back in the early 90's. Gave up the entire lake thing about 8 years ago and just now started back at it. Was just one of thost amazing days .... fished top water from 5-10 am ..Unheard of around here during the summer. 7lb fish came at around 10am on a zaraspook baby bass color. All big fish on top water and about 30 1.5lb fish on BrushHogs in skinny water ... hope that helps

Dustin,
What's the bite on at Margarita now? I fished it a week ago last friday and it was very slow. By the looks of of it, you found them alright! I stuck 5 or 6 fish on 3.5" Sweet Beavers, it's all I could get them to go on.

Dustin...Looks like there might be a break in the wind about next friday. The other boards indicate a lot of boats anxious to go check it out all up and down the coast. We should have some answers as soon as this wind lays down. The break at Monterey is only 50 miles out so you know a lot of boats will be checking there.

Harrell ... lets hope that water is not a desert like the last three seasons. I like how things are looking on Terrafin just dont like the fact that the fish showed in Oregon already and we have not had a single chance at the chase.
Been so busy the last month have not had a chance to get on here .... seems the Drama found this place for awhile ... good to see our locals and valley guys kissed and made up ... Fished Santa Margarita last Saturday for a 18lb limit and a two kicker fish at 7lbs 1oz and a 4lb 5 oz .... too bad the tourny was canceled at the last minute ... missed out on 3k bucks! .....At least something good came out of the closures, may have to take up bass fishing full time!

Weather was nice today all day, no wind-no wind waves. Yes, more incidentals (salmon) now. I just figured, if we are catching them on the rockcod gear-which wasn't happening before-then there must be more around. I caught one on a squid strip.

The latest SST/chlorophyl shots for the Davidson are as good looking as you could ever want. 60-61 degree water ,even with the wind blowing, and clean blue color with a hard 4-5 degree break. When the wind dies down it might be worth a look for the boats with the range and a wallet with the same range !

Hey John; (Taurus) Any halibut action along the beach at Oceano to SM River ? Been out of town most of the month but will be ready to check it out next week.

i think some of you need to quit worrying about what you CAN'T catch, and concentrate on what you CAN catch.............go fish, avila bay to shell beach is calm and fishable, even with this wind...halibut are on the bite...heck, if nothing else, go catch some bait...the bay is thick with bait right now...plenty of chovies and smelt for the cast net..the small macks are also biting in the bay...if nothing else, getting on the water and not even wetting a line will keep you away from the keyboard ...john

Mark, I remember the first hour of your excellent Bloody Mary's, but the fog moved in and things got a little hazy after that. I'll be on the Apollo trip to the Lupe again this year. I'm also going on a two day with J.J. at the end of July. One other thing, all my verbal sparring with "Bite Me" was in fun and I did not take or say anything personal. Everyone lighten up and "Don't worry, be happy." Have one of Mark's Bloody Mary's and everyone is your friend. As to anyone actually admitting they are from Oildale, dream on.

Greetings grumpy fisherfolk,
I've been up in Oregon the past two weeks and have been fishing and conversing with some fantastic Oregon fishers. They have a chat board up here and it is the best I've ever seen (ifish.net go to the Salty Dogs chat board). Folks up here are quick with help or suggestions on the board. Out on the ocean they even have their own channel that they monitor. The philosophy of the group is that the ocean is a very big place and that fish are concentrated in certain areas...and that those areas change. Therefore they all work together out on the ocean to help find those areas. I have been called into many hot halibut, tuna, and salmon bites in the 8 years I've been fishing up here (lived here for 6 years). It is awesome.
I think that the basis of this teamwork is that folks from the Coast (Tillamook, Depoe Bay, Newport, Winchester Bay, etc...) don't see the folks from the Valley (Eugene, Corvallis, Salem, Portland, etc...) as competitors or outsiders, but as team-members and running mates. If we all just considered ourselves as part of the brotherhood of the ocean and worked together, this chat board would be a happier place and you might even catch more fish some day out on the ocean.
best fishes,
Steve Hendricks

Is the PSL Buoy still there, just sitting or did they actually remove it? Hoping they left it, when the LFT came close enough seemed to work as an LFT FAD. Anyone know for sure?

Mel--Public thanks for the work you are doing, and the post. IHMO: Your post is only the tip of the iceberg. Public reps that are carrying out their own or politically influenced ($$$) agenda, in direct violation of required public procedures, should be investigated--and convicted where appropriate. *Especially* when their decisions affect our right-to-fish (e.g. freedoms). Cloud out

Weather/SST
The computer models show this wind will be with us for at least another week offshore but there should be some ok mornings inside on tues, wednesday and thursday.
The SST temps are coming up pretty good but the nearest clean water is out 80 miles so it looks like more waiting before we get a shot at any albacore locally. San Diego is getting some within 50 miles.
Ray: In my opinion "Tempbreak" is the best free site now that it covers our area but I still like Terrafin better especially with the chlorophyll shots that are a direct overlay.

It's the lousy weather that makes everyone grumpy ! It will all go away when the weather lays down and LFT hit the PSL buoy (or at least where it was).

Friends: REPORT FROM FOSTER CITY.

I see that the web site is still being use to vent frustrations... Glad we have Eric around to keep us all sane and on track.

Up here there is good news and bad news.

Good news: It looks like we will get to fish in October THIS YEAR, 2006.

Bad news: Even though we all busted our tails to convince the PFMC that we should get the high option (which gives us an OY ... t
