Hey all you guys..If Joe the baithauler is the same guy I know then he has worked down here in SB getting us bait so believe him when he says its hard work. Maybe you " Haters " should go out on one of the bait boats for a real life adventure and find out whats up!!! All types of net fishing are tough and just being up at 3 am is some F-ed up work schedule. I've done similar work on driftboats and it isn't fun. Props to Matt and Deke... they do their best to keep us happy and make a living too!!!

SST/Cholorophyll;
The marine layer has cleared out over the tuna waters so we should get a good SST tonight but will have to wait until tomorrow for a color shot. Don't think the temp will be a problem but we need to see where the clean water is.

Major credit to the guys who catch bait! Without them it would be straight jig fish and a few megabaits, etc.

Personally I think that the billy boy and deke do a good job of keeping bait. With the closures and the maintenance of a boat, bait receivers fuel and such, they need to be given credit.
If anyone doesn`t like whats going on you could always offer to buy them out and try it your self.

I have been lucky enough to fish for bait with Matt a few times. It was by far the highlight of all my fishing. I went on some real good trips, where we caught bait real quick, and from the time we stacked the net and left the dock to the time we came home and unloaded the bait was much more than a 4 hour boat ride. I went on a few 18 hour boat rides for no bait too. Just the shear concentration alone that Matt has to put in to find bait is amazing. Some people will never understand how much work it takes to plug the Billy Boy with bait, no matter how much we try to explain it to them.

THANK YOU to the crew of the Mello Boy, and the Billy Boy.

P.S. I should really be fishing instead of posting my rants on the internet... Good luck to everyone these next few days.

What is the difference between working days or nights? And Joe, what is so backbreaking about a 4 hour boat ride? Yeah, it's hard work if you actually wrap something, but... Maybe Matt should go take some pionters from Deke.

Joe (the baithauler);
I can assure you that the "Mark" in question is not Pices. He is a good friend of mine and would never do such a thing. Besides, guys like the complaining Mark would still bi... if you a had receiver full of 7" chovies/dines and were selling them for a penny a piece. As soon as the albacore get a little closer we will be getting up early to visit you. The wind has started up so hopefully we will get some SST's soon. The Cape San Martin buy has been holding 60 degrees so if it's clean it could be holding LFT.

scared78 thanks for the support. If this guy knew that while he was sound asleep at home all snuggled up in his bed we were out looking for bait he might shut his lips. Mark, there's no bait in the recievers because I just love driving around all night, averaging 2 hours of sleep a night and never getting to see my family. Are you the guy with the piscies? remember, we want to see bait on the dock alot more than you do. sorry for the rant and not a report guys.

Fished PSL in the mini-Avocation this morning. Caught 1 24" king and 1 other fish on. We were about 1 mile S of Red light, in 105-115' of water. Fish came 60 pulls down with a 1# ball on a white scalelite and small red flasher.
Slow for us, but we heard the regulars getting several. One guy was done when we left at 10:00 a.m.!!! No much bait around today, never did find a big ball. But there are some fish.
Good luck to those that head out this weekend.
I'll be up in Oregon for a Family Reunion...back on the water next week.
best fishes,
steve

Sorry for the late post but have computer problems. I fished out of PSL on Tues. on the Seaduecer. We went south and inside of the red lite in 105-115 ft. of water for 4 salmon and a couple of misses but 2 were bigger fish and the other 2 about 6-8 lbs. Lots of bait. We went today (9:15am) again but closer to the lite in about 108 ft and only got one. Mike on the Tally Ho got 6 keepers and a rockfisher came down when the wind came up to get 5, so they are there. Yesterday we got them on watermelon croc and chrome flasher, 115 OTW in 115 ft of water at noon. Today the hot bait was chrome croc. Going again Sat.

Today there were very few boats out of Morro Bay. We hooked several silvers but no kings. One boat said they had two 10 pounders and one 30# king on a 240 from the rock in 180 ft of water. There was less bait than usual and the water was very clear. We spoke to Steve Moore and he had 85 albacore from 10-20 pounds with a 15# average fishing a little north of the Davidson. Today he was 37 mi off of Pt Sir for nothing and another boat fishing where he was yesterday had nothing by 10:30.

What bait? Check again. They haven't had bait in a while. Boat's always tied to the dock, and your right, the recievers are down, just empty most of the time. But would they really hold bait anyway? Look at them.

Will, Were one of the boats that caught fish at PSL today? The fish report for there sounded pretty darn good, 595-2803, is the fish report number. Are you still going out fishing for your birthday? That is just what I did for mine last week out of Morro Bay, the best way to spend the day. Good Luck, and see you out there.

Hi Sheryl,
I'll be camping at PSL for the next week and intend to fish salmon over the weekend. I will moor my boat through the 4th in the harbor. If you are out there give me a call: "Baitball" on 68. Maybe we can scare up some. I caught lots of silvers at MB last weekend.

Mark, You have got to be kidding. You are joking right? They haven't dropped the recievers yet? Ever heard of a minus tide bud? Last time I checked they had KILLER bait. If you knew half of the work it takes those guys to make bait you would keep quiet.

Sorry for the rant, but I think most of us know how hard the crew of the Billy Boy works and how good of a deal we get when we buy bait from them.

Thought I would pass this along: Sarah's email is: sarahmglaser@gmail.com

Hi Will,

I met you last year in Morro Bay - I'm a grad student at Scripps
studying albacore diet habits. I've been monitoring different websites
trying to keep track of where the albacore are being caught.
Currently, we down here in San Diego are getting loads. What's it like
where you are? Could I ask you a favor - when you hear of people up
there catching albies, would you drop me an email? Thanks - I try to
keep up, but sometimes it's hard when I'm on and off boats to monitor
all the different chat rooms.

Hope it's a good fishing year for you!

MLPA UPDATE.

California's Marine Life Protection Act takes center stage in the Governor's election cycle. Governor Schwarzenegger seeks to implement a new network of marine protected areas before the election, while challenger Phil Angelides has made full funding of the program a plank in his "Coast Guard" platform on ocean policy. The RFA has been working for many years to support a plan that would limit impacts of the new closures on fishermen. We have been active in the California Fisheries Coalition (http://www.cafisheriescoalition.org) and helped to develop "Package #1" also known as the Fishermen's Alternative, and the Fish & Game Commission will be taking public testimony on August 2nd in Sacramento. RFA members are encouraged to attend this meeting to show our support for our team on the stakeholders panel. The California Fisheries Coalition has commissioned a peer review of the "science" guidelines provided during the MLPA process. The Coalition has also contracted with a public relations firm to get our side of the story out in the mainstream press. The Commission may adopt regulations for Central California as early as September.

The good news is that the Commission acted on our proposal asking for time on the agenda to present our peer review of the science advice given to the BRTF. Carl Walters, one of the top fishery managers on the west coast, will be our presenter. The Commission gave us at least an hour to give our side of the story, with some time for some of the Science Advisory Team scientists to respond.

We need to make a strong presence at the August 2 meeting of the Commission in Sacramento. At least an hour will be given over to public comment. So what's the plan? We need to show up at the Commission meeting in support of our guys who worked so hard on this MLPA process so far. We are backing their alternative, "Package #1."

ACTION ALERT: ....RFA supports the Fishermen's Alternative for the MLPA – science based, reduces impacts on fishing opportunity!
WHAT: California Fish & Game Commission Takes Public Comment - and may ADOPT Maps & Regulations for MPAs in Central California.
WHEN: Wednesday, 9 am- 5pm, August 2nd, 2006.
WHERE: California State Building 9, First Floor Auditorium, 744 P Street, in Sacramento.

Darby,

Will you be running an exploratory trip soon? I'll bet you'll will find some interest even with the increase in fuel cost. I'm sure there are some folks that have never been out to the Davidson that would totally dig that scene. If you do decide to run please post on this site the date and cost of the trip.

May be a coincidence, but it was sure ALBACORE weather today; warm and humid with lots of clouds, more like late August weather. Templeton felt like Kona today. We will be out there trolling for the LFTs as soon as they are in range. In the mean time, I think I will go out Thursday for salmon, my 55th birthday..

Wow! 42 ! Now we need the marine layer to lift so we can see if that water is coming our way. We may get a good season this year.
Supposed to blow a little this weekend so maybe it will clear out the fog for some good SST/Chlorophyll shots.

Without numbers I can't be sure. If you went out of Monterey, which would be the closest, my guess would be at least 60 miles maybe 70 where Steve caught fish.

Fish report islands Cruz + Rosa 6/23, 24, 25

WSB: 1--38" (about 15-18 lbs?) 35' water SE side Rosa, casting straight white/red glow jig. Need some pointers on how to clean these. Man, talk about big bones!
BSB: 1, same area, estimate 60 lbs, released healthy. Real challenge on 20 lb gear
Hali: 2--12 and 22 lbs, small one on inside of Cruz the other SE side Rosa. Small one on jig, large trolling flasher/hoochie. Lost one apx 25 lbs., also SE side Rosa trolling 75' water.
Cuda: One, apx 36" released, inside Cruz 80'.
Mystery: One hookup chased for 1/2 hour before hook wore thru line. Guessing BSB 100+ or big bat ray. 20 lb gear just couldnt lift. Saw the biggest arches ever on fishfinder, man there are some big critters out there.

Live squirts were available via Outer Limits inside Cruz

Weather was everything from downright snotty to real nice depending on location. A good trip considering it wasnt a hard core fishin mission. Dave, Stu n crew big Thanks for the fresh dead squirts, will of course repay or pay forward given opportunity. Hope to see you out there again sometime. OK thats it, still have fish to deal with. Cloud out

My buddy and I caught our limits of NICE rockfish today thanks to FIESTA and her crew. I caught one HUGE Boccacio at the bow on live anchovy(skip' saw that one) Also went home with 3 BIG Olives, the rest assorted. BTW my buddy caught & released 5 undersized LINGS. He did come through though and got some of the biggest REDS on the boat...
Well, Until my boat hits the water, charterin' IT

fished santa rosa on saturday..sloppy xing for a 22 ft CC and it stayed that crappy SW breeze all day. Started at the eagles nest..couldn't find any squid so we bounced for awhile...nada, nada. made a move towards the point and i dropped in on a fat 29lb halibut...the 1lb ball hit the bottom..ten ft later bam. Nice fish but that was it for us. We tried beechers the wind was about 15 and miserable. Then off to fish rockfish and did well on the coppers so we came home with a load of fish. Man does fresh halibut taste good!!! Hope to hit the salmon when my vacation starts next week. Halibut caught on a purple haze hoochie in 80 ft ( I could of killed myself for not bringing more P H hootchies) Good fishing to all!!
