SST/Weather
The computer models indicate fairly light winds tues-wed-thurs next week. Might be a chance for an albacore exploritory trip. Last night's SST/cholorophyll shows the best potential still out 70 miles or so SW of the elbow. Heard a totally unconfirmed rumor today of albacore caught 15 miles off Carmel. The SST/chlorophyll for that area looks like it could be possible though not quite warm enough. We'll see!

Surfrunr;
The DCPP report/forecast is for 1/2 mile around the power plant. You don't want to use it for 60 miles off shore.

Bob Hather,

You really know how to put the hurt on us. Awesome fish! I am so envious. Did you go on a private boat or use a charter?

To Dave and Mel;
First of all Jim Webb DOES not speak for all the members of the Cambris fishing club, there are many like myself that do not agree with his policy and views.
Our meetings are OPEN to the public and if that dont work you can be my GUEST anytime you would like , we meet the first and third tuesday at the JOSILN center at 1400, belive me you are welcome.
Jim Webb is the president, he speaks his own mind , he is a figurehead, It is very hard to understand his views , when he KILLS more fish than most . I am still a member and will continue to be but I do not AGREE with our President, same way as i dont agree with BUSH.
Looking foward to a visit from anyone who would like to visit our OPEN meetings.
My son and I have also purchased commerical licences and would like to continue to fish in the ocean, that they say belongs to THE PEOPLE .
What the hell would our ancestors think of the way our so called GOVERMENT has screwed up the system.
Keep fishing they aint enough room in the jails for us fisherman.
Blackie / Sr

This is a repost to remind us of this Prick!

Mary Webb: Board of Directors Vice- President
Mary moved to Cambria when she decided to “trade” Intel Corporation and the Silicon Valley for a more restive environment. She promptly went to work for nationally acclaimed Seekers Glass Gallery in Cambria, where she quickly became gallery manager. Mary’s history of administrative experience included gallery manager at Seekers Gallery in Cambria from 1986 to 2001. Mary was credited with successful gallery sales, artistic displays, and operations with a staff of over 15 employees during that time.

Mary joined the board of Greenspace Cambria in 2002 after volunteering at several Greenspace events. Mary is currently Chair of the Membership Committee, is managing several database projects, coordinating volunteers, and is implementing new donor management software. While serving on both the Events and the Center Street Committees, Mary created and produced the fundraising event “Chinatown on Center Street” and partnered with the Cambria Historical Society on “East Meets West” where two local community groups joined forces in a mutually beneficial fund raiser.

Mary is also responsible for public relations promotion and community outreach. She is coordinating Greenspace activities by attending PROS meetings and advising Greenspace on other CCSD related projects.

A community activist and self described “tree hugger”, Mary and her husband, Jim met at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara in the 1980’s, and moved to Cambria in 1985.

Jim Webb is a puppet!

What I don`t understand is that Jim knows better. For the life of me I don`t understand why Steve and Darby let him on their boats. He is literally trying to put them out of business. He has the Cambria fishing club convinced this is a good idea, They won`t even be able to launch their skiffs at leffingwell and fish. I went their to meetings when I lived in Cambria and tried to show them the truth. I was asked not to come back. We are at war with this idology anyone who thinks any different isn`t paying attention. Turn on channel 21 and watch the supervisors and planning comission meetings, you`ll see who has the same idology. We need to vote them out and send them on their way.

Mista' Jim Webb needs to be ground up and spit out like 'chum'. He's no advocate for the recreational fisherperson. He's a loud-mouth tree hugger with nothing better to do than ruin other peoples enjoyment. I pray I never meet the man fo fear of using him for bait. Nuff' saith thou

Friends: Okay, a big group of fishermen, both recreational and commercial met in Morro Bay today. We have decided that the best strategy is to wholeheartedly support Package 1 (the proposal supported by a majority of the members of the stakeholders working group). That means we will be opposed to Package P which is the preferred alternative of the Fish & Game Staff. That proposal is horrendous, shameful and a disgrace to the name of the Fish & Game Dept. It takes away all of the good fishing areas between Pt. Conception and a point just south of Half Moon Bay.

Let me just tell you what F&G has planned for you if their alternative is chosen by the Commission. You would lose fishing at Purisma, all fishing at Pt. Buchon to the buoy south of Diablo Canyon, all of the fishing at Cambria and south of Cambria, all of the good fishing grounds above and below the light house at Piedras Blancas, a big section at Big Creek (above the lighthouse) and a huge section at Pt. Sur.

We are going to promote a letter-writing campaign to the Fish & Game Commission advocating that they choose Package 1. I will be getting back to you with addresses and some good "argument points" as to why Package 1 should be the choice of Commission.

The fishermen who enjoy kayak fishing out of Cambria have been totally shut out under the F&G proposal. Thanks to Jim Webb (who claims to represent the recreational fishermen of Cambria), they made Cambria and the area south of Cambria a NO-FISH ZONE instead of a marine park which was advocated under Package 1. The fisermen in Cambria are going to thank you, Jim, for destroying all recreational fishing around Cambria ...

If you think the fishing grounds around Cambria should be open to recreational fishing, then you will write to the Commission and say that you are opposed to the views of Jim Webb and the no-fish zone at Cambria in Package P.

I will be getting back to you with more information. Others might be posting here with info on a bus-trip up to Sacramento on August 2. That is the key date. The Commission will work on this issue all day and into the night. We need to have our voices heard on this issue. It is pivotal. Once we lose these fishing grounds to the anti-fishing enviros ... we are toast... we will never get these fishing grouds back. The anti-fishing enviros will be out in force in Sacramento on August 2. Will you be there?

Yes we did fish Moss Landing today for great salmon fishing. We fished 8 mi on a 203 heading in 210 ft of water. All fish came on hoochies as I remember between 50 and 100 ft down. There were very few fisherman on the water. We saw some fish come in that could have been close to 40 lbs. We caught no silvers but there were some smaller fish in the mix but all were keepers.

Friends: Just heard from Bob Hather at 8 a.m. this morning. The four guys have limits of salmon out of Moss Landing. All are BIG fish ... up to 30+ pounds. Hather said he has landed the biggest salmon he has seen in many years.

SOUNDS GOOD BOB ... WISH I WAS THERE.

If you ever want to fish for rockcod in these parts again and you don't want to see hardworking people go out of business you better be in Sacramento Wednesday August 2nd.It looks like the fix is in but I don't care.I will be there and I will be seen and heard. This is a do or die situation. If you want to fish with your daughter, son or grandchildren you need to be their voice on August 2nd..Good Luck John

Sportsman, If you are looking for a neat GPS/VHF handheld, I can reccomend the Uniden Mystic. I've had one for about a year and it works great, you can pick them up on ebay for about three hundred. seems they didn't sell well and the maps that included on the CD arent the greatest, but we use it to set waypoints and for return navigation. the radio works fine and it waterproof.

Martine;
Here is a NOAA graphic weather site that is as good as any and better than most for our inside areas. It has all the weather elements. Realize that no forecast for a very localized area is going to be very accurate. It only takes another 5kts of wind to make an ok day turn to a miserable one or vise versa.
Scroll down to the last DCPP forecast that I posted and send John Lindsey an e-mail asking to be put on his e-mail list.

Has anyone used the Furuno FCV585 FishFinder or the Furuno GP7000F/NT. I'm looking to purchase a nice fish finder for my boat and need some input on what I should buy. I mostly fish out of Morro Bay. My spending limit is about $2000 for fish finder and gps. Also if anyone has any info on were I can get a enclosed helm and soft top for my 1986 250 sportsman wellcraft it would help too.

Just got back from PSL... the fish are on the chew. We caught good lings, black and yellows, coppers, blues, blacks, gophers, good bolina's, two 5 lb grassies, cabezon, alot of 15 in. halibut, an 8 lb Starry flounder, and what I would only be guessing a puffer shark.... Props out to the helpful Deke, and the PSL marina crew.. That protected area sure can produce good fish when the weather is snotty out there!!!!!!

Wow...the Salty Dogs are absolutely slaughtering the tuna up in Oregon (http://www.ifish.net/forum/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB21). They are getting 10-40 fish per boat and the fish are 30-60 miles out. Mostly Central Oregon Coast from Coos Bay to Tillamook. Man I wish I was living in Corvallis still!!! Hopefully it will be that way again here in a few years:-(

Hi Sheryl! There are a couple guys looking two or three times a week here and in Morro Bay..They are getting a few the rough weather, small fish, silver infestation and 3.25 fuel makes it hard to really look everyday...Most that are going to fish salmon are getting ready for the July 26th opener from Moss on up...It will be 75 fish per boat per week so I would think the market price will be a good one...I would travel to Moss if I wanted to fish salmon. There are some toads being caught and the Bay is is nice most of the time. The only trouble is there is you can only catch two fish each for the trip. Hope this helps.See you soon.Good luck John

Hello this is my first post, I have been a reader for over a year now . And this is my first occasion to post. I need some help.

I have a friend who after a lot a problems finally bought a used 32' Searay and with the help of three other friends are driving it up from Oxnard today. They have had several problems along the way ( I dropped them off early this morning ) , broken power steering belts (twice) broken water pump. But, they fixed these things and docking it in SB to night and will be back home and dock in PSL tomorrow 7-9 Sunday in the early afternoon. The problem is the dingy on the boat is not useable.

Is there any one who has a dingy in PSL the can help me shuttle these guys back to land after this rough trip. If so please email me at phemesath@gmail.com. Thanks

clark- we usually fish out of santa cruz. its about a 20 minute drive further than moss. we allways get up there the night before and stay in the rv park or in the parking lot in our rv. its easy, safe and ok to do so. cost 13.00. we like to have lunch at the crows nest and stop by todds shop, bayside marine for ice and a chat when we're done fishing. moss has been a bit further to the salmon but you get a good push back if the wind comes up...either's a good choice
good luck if you go!

Would you reccomend SC or Moss and if you were to get up in the area about 10pm the night before could a person find a place to pull over for rest or is it best to just leave at like 2am. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Just checked out this mornings SST for Morro Offshore. Huge mass of clean, warm water to 63-degrees is fingering into the Elbow. Originating near the 1978. Looks like the real deal.

Got a call from my buddy Mike in Bandon Or. They got 14 albacore 25 miles out today...They caught them in 60 degree water. They had a Pacific Halibut fishing day today, those grounds are 21 miles out. They got their 5 fish for 5 guys limit in one drift. The fish weighed in at 30 to 60 lds. They decided to head out and hit the 60 degree water and bingo..It was fun to hear someone had nice weather and close fish..Hopefully our turn is coming soon...Good Luck John

on the red flasher/purple haze, one came on a coyote spoon, at between 160 and 180. lots of guys on the inside fishing for halibut. if you have the time, it's a great trip for a day.

We had a great day of fishing out of PSL. The swell was less than anticipated, and the closeness was not a problem. We did not try for salmon today, just rock fish and had good luck, at least 20 short lings but a nice big cabezon, and a keeper ling, and good bolinas. We will be back for more tommorrow. Happy Fishing, Sheryl

SocalIdiot,
Thanks for the report. The boat I was on a week and a half ago, TopGun 80, came in on Monday from a 3 day with 80+ BFT, 250 YFT, and 40+ LFT. The YFT's went off on them. That was between 25 guys!

I'm headed back down in a couple weeks for a do-over! Can't wait around here for a break in this weather.

Blast from the south, Fished the 1010 trench friday for some big yella's, and no albacore in sight down there. I had to go with 15lb floro to get looked at, on 7-6 med-hvy terramar w\the avet 5. Water is 70 degrees, but cooler further out. The tuna are extremely spooked and running from 50-70 mexican seiners down 130-160 miles,Rambo on the Cortez says there are tons of marks at 30-40 fathoms, but wont play. Lots of bluefin and albies on the fourth of july, only to have seiners almost wrap his boat. Needless to say that bite is gone and they are at an exploratory level again lookin further west. I am crossing my fingers, legs, arms and toes for you guys, eat your vitamins and say your prayers there is alot of BFT around. If they run out and up they will be fat and hungry when they get there for ya!!! Tony.

Here is John's report/forecast for the weekenders that may not have seen it.

DCPP Weather Forecast for Friday 07/07/06 ===============

SEA/SWELL:

Fresh to strong northwesterly winds will generate a 4 to 6 foot
northwesterly (300°) sea/swell (with a 5-8 second period) along
our coastline through Saturday. This northwesterly (300°) sea/swell
will build to 5 to 7 feet (with a 7-9 second period) on Sunday
through Tuesday.

A 4 to 6 foot northwesterly (300°) sea/swell (with a 5-7 second
period) is forecast along our coastline on Wednesday, decreasing to
3 to 5 feet on Thursday.

A 4 to 6 foot west-northwesterly (275°) swell (with an 11-13 second
period) is forecast to arrive along our coastline next Friday.

Still not much activity in the southern hemisphere nor in the
tropical waters off central America. Never the less, a 1 to 2 foot
southerly (190°) swell (with a 14-16 second period) should arrive
along the Diablo Canyon coastline on Monday. Another southern
hemisphere (220°) swell will arrive along our coastline next Thursday
and Friday at 1 to 2 feet (with a 16-18 second period).

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITION:

An onshore flow, coming off very cold coastal waters, has produced
cool coastal temperatures. At Diablo Canyon a low temperatures of
51.2° was recorded this morning. A maximum high temperature of only
55° is expected along the Diablo Canyon coastline this afternoon.

The current weather pattern is not expected to change appreciably
during the next 5 days, as high pressure remains nearly stationary
off the California coast, and a thermal low pressure occupies the
central valley.

Inland temperatures will continue to increase today with Paso Robles
reaching 102° by Saturday afternoon.

The marine layer will deepen on Sunday morning with not a lot of
clearing along our coastline. Little change in temperatures will occur
across the inland areas on Sunday, but then stronger onshore winds
will cool all interior locations on Monday and Tuesday.

A moderately strong upper-level low pressure trough will cross the
Pacific Northwest coast next Wednesday bringing below normal
temperatures to all our locations. A warm high pressure ridge in
the upper atmosphere will build from the south across the region
later in the week and next weekend, with potentially warm to hot
temperatures across all locations away from the coast next weekend
and beyond.

Fished PSL in the mini-Avocation today. Got a fat scoop of perfect medium to large sardines from deke. Well cured and they lasted all day! Perfect Bait.
Fished all the inside spots for 4 pick-ups and 2 short halibut (1 was 1/4" short!). Headed down to Pirates and found no halibut, but a solid bite on 1-3 pound bolina and two keeper lings under the baitballs. There is bait everywhere out there today. There were literally thousands of pelicans, cormorants, gulls, etc... working in and around PSL today. Amazing to watch. Saw hundreds of birds crashing bait right in front of the launch ramp around noon. Truly amazing!!! The halibut may have been too busy burping from full bellies to eat today.
Did talk to one guy at the cleaning station that was fishing the sand patches off of Shell Beach in 40-60' of water. He had 3 nice halibut. They are definitely around...just need to find some biters. It was a sauna inside today, but nasty on the outside.
best fishes,
steve

I agree Harrell that the break at 65 to 80 mi on a 235 from Morro Bay looks best and that is also where the water is cleanest. The weather looks fishable for a long run beginning Thurs the 13th.

Take a look at this SST. The water headed towards the elbow is warmer and is coming from the southwest where historically the fish usually come from.

Stacey,

Yes, I'm the same person. But I sold the blue ford ranger for a silver '06' Toyota Tacoma w/shell. I don't have the 12' Valco nor the 9.9 Merc anymore either. Upgraded to a much nicer 12' Klamath & a 9.9 Johnson. And another upgrade coming next week. A 2005 15 hp Merc. So I'll have a very nice 9.9 Johnson for sale soon.

Michelle if you can go Sunday night I'll go second ticket if you need, and postpone my trip to Mexico. Give me a call at home.

Harrell,

About 20 to 30 gallons per hour. It depends on what you consider cruising speed.

If I have paying passengers, I can go up to 100 miles from shore, and can be out for 12 hours. After 12 hours I need another captain or mate, and an extra deckhand. The only thing I don't like about 12 hour trips is having to leave the fish while they are biting. Maybe Paul Schuyler would want to go fish, and bring license in case of late bite.

Weather/SST/Chlorophyll

Still no end in site for the wind and swell although the computer models show a little less wind next wed/thurs. The swell still in the 6-8 ft range to keep it jackass even on the inside.

We got a good SST and a pretty good Chlorophyll yesterday. This wind has the water cooled down but the shape and direction of the warmer water is looking just fine. I like the plume that is coming out of the southwest towards and across the elbow as close as 40 miles. Still to cold at 40 miles but when the wind stops the temp could jump right up. It is still relatively clean so it could happen !

Michele;
Very generous offer ! I have a couple of questions;
I assume the Fiesta would be the boat for the trip. What is the time and distance limit for a trip like the one being contemplated with one skipper ? The other question is just curiosity. I was wondering how many gallons of fuel the Fiesta burns per hour at cruising speed ?

I have been able to get out only twice since the opener and its very frustrating... I think it is part of "The Plan" to open the season when they know it will blow the most....... mj

Will,

You can charter the whole boat for a cost. Just call Virge's. Personally, I wouldn't want to do it until later in the season. It's expensive no matter which way you look @ it. Might as well 'KNOW' the fish are there before going to such a big expense. Just a thought.

Michele,
How about a Fish Reports member's albacore trip? I'm sure we could get a boat full. What would the cost be? Sounds like a good time.

I will be fishing PSL tomorrow in the mini-Avocation. Will be targeting halibut, but might venture out for salmon if the weather is nice. Give a call on 68.
Any idea what Deke has for bait?
I'd be in for a tuna trip...cheaper than takin' the Avocation out! How much do these trips generally cost?
