I received this response and it was both quick and encouraging. Of course now I have to go kill my rumor source !!

Mr. Kimball: the small boater is of great importance to the Harbor District. For this reason we expend considerable resources in dredging annually, and there are no plans for cessation of this activity. In fact, when normally dredging is completed in May or June, we are dredging again now due to late swells and a build up of sand. And we’ll be back next spring doing it all again!

Additionally, we are planning a replacement of the overhead launch, draw works and controls, to prolong the life of this essential facility.

Thank you for expressing your concern, and I will forward your e-mail, and this response, to the Commission.

Friends:

Okay, disregard the part about contacting Harold's secretary about lodging in Sacto (Dorothy). She is not in the office enough to take on this burden.

1. If you are a recreational fisherperson and want to go up to Sacto in the van provided by CCFCC, call Rick Algert to reserve a spot.
2. When you call Rick Algert .. be sure to ask if you are coming back on August 2nd or August 3rd. Then make your own reservations at Vagabond Motel or Holiday Inn (Captial Plaza) .. and CCFCC will reimburse you (assuming that you get least expensive room and are a recreational fisherman).
3. Concerning reimbursements for lodging contact me at (805)544-2424 or cell phone at (805)459-6543.

John thanks for the look/see.

Mel, is there also a meeting in Monterey regrading the MLPA? If so when is that meeting?

This was posted on Bayside Marine's website.
The water was flat calm all day long and it should be nice all week. The water conditions look good to run for Albacore on Thursday and Friday. There was one report of a Albacore being caught today about 60 miles from Santa Cruz. The Albacore anglers had a double hook up and boated one 18 pound Albacore. The water is warm and there are some good signs around 36'30/123'14 where the one fish was caught.

Friends: As you all know there is a crucial meeting of the F&G Commission in Sacramento on August 2nd where they will hear public comment on the MLPA proposals. We were going to rent a large bus for a trip on August 1 with a return on August 2nd late at night. There was not enough interest.

Now we have a 12-passenger van going up on August 1st and coming back on August 2nd or 3rd (not sure on that). There is room available on the van ... and we might be able to get another van if it fills up.

Contact RICK ALGERT at Morro Bay Harbor Office to reserve a spot. Call him for details also at 772-6254. No charge for the transportation. If we get a group of rec. fishermen going ... talk to me about reimbursing you for lodging in Sacramento, paid for by the CCFCC. Or, we could reserve a block of rooms if we have interest. I think that most of the people from our area are staying either at the Holiday Inn (Capital Plaza) on "J" St. or the Vagabond (they are right across the street from each other.

We have rented a meeting room at the Holiday Inn from 3-7 p.m. on August 1st where we will all meet and discuss strategy for the following day. If you are getting to Sacto by some other means ... please try to be at that meeting at the Holiday Inn on August 1.

I will only be in town today, so don't try to contact me on this. Call Rick Algert .. or call Dorothy (Harold Davis' Secretary) at 227-1170.

I will be back on July 31 from Mexico and try to tie all the loose ends together.

Harrell,
Great...what's the email address? Between the bankers hours that Del keeps and the build up of sand it is hardly worth taking the Avocation out there. I've launched 3 times there this year and had to plow across the bar each time!
Thank goodness for the mini-Avocation and the pier:-)
thanks,

Here is an e-mail I sent to the Port San Luis Harbor Commision.
If any of the commisioners read this it sure would be nice to hear from you since we did vote you into office.

Port San Luis Harbor Commision;

Could you please tell me (us) what the future plans are for the small boat hoist and launch . I heard a rumor that there will be no more dredging . If this is true it would make it impossible to launch a small sport boat after the next storms arrive. Even now with the short hours and low tides it is difficult to launch !
What are the future plans for the small recreational boater ?? It appears to us that we are at the bottom of the commision's priority list

Thank you for any info you that you can provide.

Get On The Bus, Gus...If it were not for Flores we would not even get this chance. He singlehandedly kept the commission from doing what they wanted, that is not let the Aug 2nd and 15th public hearing happen. As President he vetoed their vote..If Flores says to go to the meetings you had better be at both meetings..It is time to go and fight. It is going to take a miricle to keep this area open. Please make plans to go to both meetings, it is the only hail Mary pass we have..Thanks Good Luck John

Its easy to write a letter, just do it.

July 18, 2006

Dear Fish and Game Commissioners

I ask you to consider Package 1 as the alternative for a network of marine reserves in the Central Coast for the following reasons:

1. Package 1 was a compromise made to meet all scientific requirements. It removes a substantial amount of very productive fishing but will still leave a little for the fishermen.

2. The other packages will cause the few fishermen left to run miles from port to fish causing more fuel usage and greater risk to life.

3. The other packages will all but eliminate fishing from Morro Bay because they put nearly all the rockfish habitat into closure.

Please minimize the negative social economic impacts to the people that use this resource in light of successful adaptive management currently in use.

THIS IS IT!

Just spoke with Mike Flores, Fish and Game commission president. My goal was not to sway his opinion but get his advise. I did express our frustration that after we all worked so hard on something that would meet all the criteria the department would come up with package “P” as a preferred alternative. He said a few things of interest to ours. First that he has not made up his mind on anything. HE NEEDS OUR INPUT. Second he has no idea what the position of the rest of his commission is on this.

His recommendation is that we attend all meetings and write clear, concise, respectful letters and keep them short. "Let them know you are watching" "50,000 petitions would do it." (Those are his words.) He agrees that the commission is not doing their job if they simply accept the department's "railroad job". So the deck is stacked against us but this thing is still up for grabs.

If you have never done anything, this is the time to get off your butt. If you are so tired of it all that you, like me, have practically given up, then this is the final push get off your butt one more time. We have got to come together for this one last fight. Sure, there will be more but this is the big one as far as anyone can see.

Get on the bus August 1st and write some letters. Most of all get some others to do the same.

Fished out of San Diego on the Sea Adventure 80 last week for 71 Yellowtail, 1 Bluefin, and 1 Dorado. The purse seiners were thick on the water with helocopters and planes netting the Bluefin which most likely scattered the Albies.

SST/chlorophyll/weather
Well, the temp is up and the wind is down. Pretty good shots yesterday afternoon. There is water as warm as 62 degrees at the "PSL" buoy and 65 degrees at Arguello canyon where Taurus said he was heading. For the most part the water is clean anywhere you go. Since the latest shots were afternoon shots there is a lot of surface heating and we need to see the night shots to get a good idea of where the breaks might be. The computer models show the wind staying down at least through thursday and maybe longer.

We also fished out of Moss this weekend for a coulple of nice kings and the biggest silver I have seen in 30 years. It was bigger than either of our kings which were 12 lbs. Overall the bite was slow south of the canyon because, as I found out when it was time to go home, the fish moved to the northside of the canyon. Oh well, a day late and a dollar short.

Coastside fishing club is making it easy to be heard (again). If you value your freedoms and right to fish do it now or forever lose it. Follow the link, Cloud out:

Coastsiders:

The time has come for you once again to act in order to save and preserve our rights as recreational anglers. The California Fish and Game Commission have selected two dates to hear public testimony on the Marine Life Protection Act –the law providing for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas in state waters. We are asking each of you to do two things:

1) Send a letter (email, fax, and hard copy) to the Commission, the Secretary of Resources, Governor Schwarzenegger, and your state senator and assembly member in support of 'Package 1'.

2) Attend one or both of the special Fish and Game Commission hearings on the MLPA again supporting Package 1.

The following link will make it fast an easy to send e-mails. There is also more details on the topic

http://home.comcast.net/~lyndaabbott/coastside_mlpa/MLPA.html#details

Good Luck

Just got back from Monterey. Fished out of Monterey on Sunday. Decided to launch there as opposed to Moss because the numbers folks were posting were closer to Monterey and I was fishing in my skiff, so a down hill run in the afternoon seemed like a better idea.
Took my 13 year old cousin out for his first time fishing in the salt! It was a bumpy day, but he was a trooper and stuck it out...although he got pretty green a few times. Took us a while to find the fish, but we eventually got into them at 42 and 52 (about 6 miles N of Monterey). Didn't have out first knock down until about 10:30. Handed the rod off to my cousin and I started winding up the down rigger (from 115'!!!). I looked over and saw him still holding the rod by the butt and the line limp...I guess I forgot to tell him to reel! Needless to say the fish got off. About a half hour later another knockdown on the purple haze/hot spot at 115' (220' of water). This time I coached him a little more and he kept the tip up and reeled the fish in after a steller jump (strange for a king) and a couple of good runs. It was a nice 12# fish. About 15 mins later another fish on and this time it is my turn. I battle the fish to the boat and Ethan does a fine job of netting his first fish, a 14# king. We had one more fish on...it hit his rod with a 1 pound ball. It was on for a bit, but he kinda forgot the reeling thing again and it got off. Headed in at noon with two nice kings. It was a little bumpy, but fine until noon.
The water looked nicer today and less fog. Took 30 Cuesta College students to the aquarium today...man I would like sure like to catch one of those 400# bluefin in the Outer Bay tank!!!
Fishing friday for halibut. Ed and Sheryl how did you guys do this weekend?
best fishes,
steve

SnappahHi old fishing buds:It's sort of puny to advertise this with a recently stunning photo of that 30# salmon taken off Moss Landing, but... here in New Zealand in the winter, when the LFT,YFT, marlin and kingfish-aka yellowtail-have moved north to Tonga, we catch these little gems by the barrelful. Best tasting fish I've ever encountered-'Snappah'(pagrus auralus). EMERALD will be sailing back to CA by Sept this yr in time to chase the last of the LFT. Best of luck to you all. See you then>>Rick

I reckon my weather perdiction for Cambria fishing yesterday was just the opposite of what it was. That must qualify me to work side-by-side with Jim Burn (A local meteroligist) And why not ? I gradeated from the 6th grade. Ain't nothin' makin' a perdiction that don't pan out.

Good seeing you yesterday Stacey. It's been awhile. Sorry mother nature wasn't cooperative. Still some nice quality fish caught.

Hey guys,
I've been drinking with a few neighbors and were a little pissed:
I began fishing out of leffigwell once I completed my schooling and could afford to fish. I started out on Virges and Patriot. Also shore fishing when I had the chance.
I used to be into deer hunting and due to housing and vineyard developement I have not been able to pursue that recreation.
I've read thru Mel's recomendations and I feel that it is best to comply with his strategy: Anyone that cares to about their Right to Fish should do someting at this time.
I'm not one to protest or make any public oposition towards Government policy, but
It is time to stand up and be heard. Bob or Mel please correct me if I'm wrong: I feel that we have been targeted for the initial phase of MPA's due to the fact that we are politically weak, we have a small population of salties and have been targeted by backdoor deals that make southern california the last to be impacted by MPAs.
United Anglers of Southern California are a bunch of CSeers, ( I mean rooster fish to keep this civil) .
We went fishing today and it was bumpy. I feel that mother nature dictates the limits of our fishing: I always take what I'll need to feed my family.
Leffingwell was visited by perhaps 8 boats today, I took 6 fish.

I can't do the RTF sponsored bus, but I'll take the Tahoe up for a day trip. I have 2 seats available.

steve- i fished solo this morning out of moss. literally hundreds of boats out on the water. i would get out as early as you could. it was pretty much an early bite. the wind came up at about noon but it was fishable. everyone was concentrated on a spot about 6 miles south from moss. but i heard some guys on the radio getting a few fish in the soquel hole area. the bite was slow at best.i managed two fish one 8lbs and one 31lbs. and several silvers. lost another big king to a furbag. 200' of water down 90 to 130. red flasher purple haze worked best but my big fish came on a blue kajiki hoochie.
good luck if you go.

Fished Estero Bay for no salmon this morning. I stayed in shallow and ran up past Cayucos. It was lumpy and cold. Bright spot was landing an 11 lb. halibut off Constantine Rock in the sun. We used live anchovies (pretty small) I lost at least one other good halibut drifting along the kelp in 25 to 35 feet of water.

Well it was nice catching rockfish while it lasted. Oh, you don't know. The department of fish and game is going to make every spot you want to fish out of bounds. People, if you don't stop everything and I mean everything and go to Sacramento on August 2nd and phsically protest this is going to happen..this is not chicken little running around this is really a critical situation for this area. We will need all the help we can get and I'm not sure we can pull this one off. One thing is for sure I am going to try are you??? Good luck John

Stacey,
Patriot Sportfishing sells Kelly Kustom swimbaits. They are the best in my opinion, nice and soft and great action. Patriot has a pretty good selection and is now the only one retailing them now that Tackle Warehouse in SLO is out of the Salt Water line.

Sure Stacey,

USE 'GULP' baits(I'll bring some extras along) Guarenteed to catch more fish. As I've proven it over-N-over to many others. I'll be on the water when you get there. Directly in front of the launch. I'll go north with you. Do you have a vhf radio ?

Fished PSL in the mini-Avocation today. No worries about the low tide when slinging off the peir! Got another nice 1/4 scoop of perfect dines from Deke and headed up to the Pea Patch. It was slow going, but we finally managed to put a 28" but and a 25" ling in the boat by noon. The wind began to pick up, so we headed down to Shell and got another 30" halibut near where we got the one yesterday. Both fish were in about 30-35' of water. There was bait everywhere off of Shell...birds working everywhere and you could see 10-20 sardines following the boat around!
Good luck to those that head out this weekend. The ocean was fine in my 15' skiff. Shell is always nice. I'll be out next Friday.

Dave,
I'll be at leffingwell in the morning. I'll most likely head up towards pico. I'll wear a yellow or orange shirt so you can pick me out of the crowd, check the wiper of my F250 as i'll leave a note if i go elsewhere.

I've been having trouble finding reasonably priced swimbaits here locally during the last month; Joe is out of business and walmart is out of kalins. Any recommendations?

Fished Morro Bay this morning. First headed to PSL to have a look at the launch conditions but no way for this boat. First guys out in an 18' runabout had to push it all the way around the corner on every little wave that came in! We were looking at a 2 hour wait so we blasted off for Morro Bay.

We were in the water by 0800. Swell was up but not too bad, decent period, little to no wind, fishable. Hit Pt. Buchon and we were immediately on good fish at our first drop. Here are Pics of 2 of my crew-members who have never been rockfishing or on the ocean for that matter. Both Pics are of their first fish! I think they're hooked! Came in with 2 limits of mostly Reds including a couple Olives that were nice and big. I stuck and landed a 30" Ling on a Megabait about 30 seconds after one of my guys handed it to me and said that it wasn't "working right!"

Headed in at 11:15 just as the wind was picking up. Didn't want any sick first timers so we left while we were still having fun.

Also, anyone needing Auto Parts help in Morro Bay...I can't praise the Auto Zone guys enough. Right before jumping on Highway 1 for home, I had a wheel bearing grenade on one of the tandem axles. I pulled the hub and went to see them. They loaned me the tools to get the races and seal out as well as the tool to reset the new races. We all really thought we had this problem beat until we realized our estimation on size of the inner bearing, which disintegrated, was wrong. Too small! We limped her home at 40 mph with the axle strapped up. If that was you behind me on the freeway.....SORRY!

I've got some work to do.......

~TF

It's been blowin' and the seas been bumpy... But it's also s'pose to start layin' down for the weekend. I would suggest you head out early as possible. Then If it starts getting too nasty you can always fish inside.

it's perfectly legal to gaff a legal size salmon....you must have a landing net of 18" min diameter on board AT ALL TIMES when fishing for any finfish to assist in landing under sized fish

Had a great trip to Moss Landing yesterday thursday. We lost the first one just near the boat. But then my turn was up and bam the line just kept going out on my 310gti and just about spooled me,lucky I had the other side out of the water to check it so I could crank the kicker around and chase it abit. Finally it stopped and came to the net tired. Broke the net 30.8lbs my first salmon of the year on the new boat.had to gaff the next three.Red hot spot purple haze for all fish.Pictures later. Thanks to this board, lots of good info.

Friends: I thought someone else was going to post this information: CCFCC is considering helping pay for a bus and lodging for those who can travel to Sacramento ... leaving SLO at noon on August 1 and returning late on August 2nd. BUT... we need to know how many can go before reserving a bus and reserving big block of motel rooms. If you can go, call Harold Davis or Dorothy (his secretary) at 227-1170 tomorrow ... IMPORTANT!!!!! We need to know right away.

Friends: I am traveling across the country ... and while driving am thinking about the upcoming challenges and threats to our fishing rights. I am now in a motel room east of San Antonio. I am going to follow this up with three postings, each on a different topic. I will have an attachment to each posting and suggest that all interested parties copy the attachments for further reference. All of these postings are about the upcoming August meetings of the Fish and Game Commission and their consideration of closures along the Central Coast.

It's calling for great conditions on Sat. Myself & others will be launching @ Luffingwell. Fished there yesterday for a nice 8 lb red and 12 lb cab. Many other fish landed & released. The lings have been short, Gohpers too small, Blues in abundance and Johnny's galore.
Hope to see you out there. Tight lines to all.

Fished PSL in the skiff today. Got a sweet 1/4 scoop of 4-5" dines from Deke. Headed down to Shell Beach and began drifting the sand/rockpiles for halibut/what ever bites. Ended the day with two keeper lings (24" and 26"), 5 nice 12-16" bolina, and 1 FAT!!! 30" halibut. Hitting it again tomorrow.
Didn't even try to go around the corner today, but I think it was pretty snotty. Boats were heading in from the outside at 11 a.m. when we came in. We will try the Pea Patch in the morning, but will most likely end up off Shell.
btw, seiners do target bluefin on the Pacific Coast. How do you think they get all those bluefin in those pens off of Salispuedes (Baja)!
best fishes,

Michael, a few years ago I heard about bluefin out of Santa Cruz. So I ran up there to check it out. The schools of bluefin were boiling as far as the eye could see. They were 16 mi out. These fish averaged 100 pounds but we saw many that appeared to be 200 plus. The water was so green and dirty that the visiblity was only about 8 feet and the water temp was a cold 55 degrees. We hooked one that brook us off due to inept fishing skills but a friend landed three. I sat on the stakeholders group this year to the Blue Ribbon Committee on MPA's with a squid fisherman who showed us maps of where they fish for squid and it wasn't out 16 mi. However, since I was fishing for salmon and not bluefin out of Monterey yesterday, my comments about the seiners is speculation.

Bob Hather...Seiners do not = bluefin..they also fish for squid, mackeral, anchovies, sardines so please don't start the hysteria if you don't know what they're after. Plus the water is not right for bluefin at 16 miles or thirty. Use the ole noggin when making statements on the internet. PS good job on the salmon!!!

hello friends, i came in from a rockcod/fish trip afew years ago & some guys met me up on top of the dock & asked how the fishing was. i told them it was o.k. .they then told me that they were in the cambria fishing club & said that fishing was not as good as it used to be & said that with an attitude of disgust like people like myself or virgs was to blame. i was on a virgs boat that day so i told michele what they said & she seemed kind of shocked & said if thats how they feel ,then when we take them out on a charter we,ll take em to fish for sand dabs since they think its so bad now for rockfish. i dont know thier names, only who they said they were. whoever they were they can kiss my fish catching, fish eating ass. please folks catch some fish for me until i can come back & catch my own. sincerley, jeff. post script, hello john,sharon,brian,michele..scott,chip..sam k. ..randy&ida.. jimmy n. ..harold & crew..larry o. ..charlie c. ..jeff s. ..ricky. .. calvin. ..billy boy crew. gilly. & anyone i forgot. i,m still alive & well ,hoping to soon sceam loud as hell,FRESH ONE!!!

We went to Moss again today with a mission of only keeping fish over 15 lbs. We caught 26 salmon and kept our limit of eight. We had to settle for three that were under 15 but caught fish over 30. Two other boats from our are also did about the same after reading my post of yesterday. Harrell, there were seiners 16 mi off of Carmel today which probably means they were after bluefin like the big run they had several years back. On the MLPA issue, please email me by friday if you can join a group of fishermen from our area leaving the morning of the 1st and returning late Aug 2nd. to testify at the Auguast 2 DFG Commission hearing. Lodging and transportation can be provided. rkhather@charter.net.
