A quick look at our seatemp chart and the next 2 to the north show a good view of whats happening. We have an "inner band" of warm water then a cooler band, THEN the main band of warm water. Off Morro & Avila the main band is about 60-70 miles out. As you move up to PT. SUR and Santa Cruz area the main band moves in and is only 12 - 15 miles offshore. I think thats why they are getting the big counts and also a few bluefin. Maybe in the next couple of weeks we will see the warmer water bands "come together" so to speak and our fishing will improve. It seems that we often have great fishing in late Sept and through Oct with lots of bigger unit fish. The fish counts won't be so big, but you have to remember that when you hang a 40-50 lb albie on a 20 or 25 lb bait rod its not a 10 minute fish. You might have to work him for 45 min to an hour. and as the days get shorter that really cuts into your fishing time. I think for next weekend I will hang the lighter stuff up in the garage and load fresh 30 lb on my bait rigs. And check and double check every knot..... if there is a weak spot in the tackle, the late season fish will find it. |

fished thursday in the same area as the local fleet till noon, picked one fish then just couldn't take the 'spotty' fishing.... headed towards the 1908... picked three more about 8 miles past the donut at around 6pm then my autopilot decided to go south....bit the bullet and hand steared most of the night to get to purisma and switch gears for cod....i hear the davidson is holding some good fish... 75-125 fish days...i hear nothing about the rod , arguello canyon , or the 1908... i was hoping to change that...next time?...john |

Started off for the same numbers as yesterday but stopped 3 miles short as there was a small .5 degree break. Got three fish there on Mexican flags and one on bait. Went back out to 15 and 19 and picked up five more, again on Mexican flags, cedar plugs and bait. We did have the fish up to the boat once. Again, there was a small temp break and that's where we got the fish. We had two go 35 pounds, a couple of 30's the rest around 25. Nice fish. Ocean got nicer as the day went on. We ran the jigs short and trolled about 7 mph. |

Weather, SST & Tuna: There has been a really wide open bite 15-25 miles out of Monterey for the last few days. If you got to have big numbers of tuna then go north ! As indicated in the recent posts it has been scratchy here at best. Wave Runner did well yesterday and from what I hear on the radio he has caught a few this morning. The weather looks good thru wednesday then it might get a little windy for a few days. Last night's SST shows some better definition of the breaks which might concentrate the fish. The area that Wave Runner posted shows a good break. |

Fished both Friday and Saturday for very scratchy fishing at best. Starting saturday fishing the Sweet Marissa with David from the allcoast board ... got a late start and on the water by 11:30. Hit the grounds an hour later and ended the day with three fish in about 5 hours. Saturday got an early start on my boat fishing with my dad and bro. Ran to the same numbers that everyone else has been boxing 35.10/121.20 Jig fish about 5 min after the rods go in the water. Slow for the rest of the day, one more jig strike and the hanford navy pulling into our chum line and the day was over. One fish in the box one farmed ...but great day on the water with my bro and dad. Dustin |

Fished between 14 and 19 and 15 and 18 and got 8 albies. Mexican Flags, cedar plugs and two on bait. Kept the plugs farther back than usual and trolled a little slower than normal. Lost two (sawed off line and threw the hook at the boat). Some shark problems (blues). Temp was 63.9. AT 20 20, we got one and had two other jig strikes. There was half a degree temp break that seemed to hold some fish. We did have the fish boiling and charging the boat once but they got cut off by an inexperienced boater that cut right behind us in our chum line and you could see the fish charge off. Oh well, we all learn. Little choppy going uphill but not bad. |

Port San LUis Albacore. Fished out of PSL today. First albacore trip on the little (17ft)boat. Had to make a lot of unwanted stops on the way out due to an alarm that kept going off on the motor. We started trolling about 3 miles inside of the weather buoy. Saw a school of sardines jumping, and lots of birds working. Worked our way out to the outside of the buoy (3-4 miles). Lots of good (fish?) meter marks down at 100 ft. Tried soaking bait while we gave the motor a rest. Then we heard a report of a fish at 35:04 121:11. We worked our way out (about 2.5 miles away)trolling. Got hooked up on a cedar plug right after we got there. About 20# fish. Worked the live bait for about 30 min. but no success. Then another 30 min. when the motor refused to start. The battery was tired, and when we switched to the spare it was totally flat. Had to shut down the bait system to conserve juice. Finally, after a long rest, it started again (barely). We did some speed laps to get the battery charged back up. Then resumed trolling. Worked the area for a couple more hours. Still lots of good meter marks. We worked our way back down to the buoy. Ended up with the one fish. Only heard one other positive report of an albacore from the other boat fishing those numbers. Also jig fish, zuchini feather. There were also radio fish reported around 15+13 and 19+15. Sounded like 3 or 4 fish each for a couple boats? We were 19.5 miles from PSL, when we got our fish. Weather was a bit crappy for the little boat. Probably 10 kts, with a mixed up 1,2,&3 ft. chop everywhere, close together. Fishable, but a little nerve racking at times for our boat. We pulled our gear in at the buoy, and headed for home. The rumor at the dock was that somebody saw "Whitee" chomp a seal next to Avila pier today. Supposedly the coasties even sent out a helicopter. Both the harbor patrol, and coasties were patrolling around there when I drove home about 5pm. I got some weird reactions from people when we were talking, and I suggested that there might be more than one (shark). Too many seals in the harbor, and they aren't in the water?!!! -Donny, aka: Hitchiker

Today we went out of Morro Bay in the afternoon. Left the bait dock at 2:00 pm ready for the late bite we heard about. We found about 10 boats in the area of 35:10 121:20, about 24mi out on a 240. They said the albacore shut off at 2:30. Some boats had only a couple of tuna while others caught 10 or more. We managed to catch one 20lb albacore on a jig that had sguid and anchovie in its belly. On the way out we went through 69 degree water but fished in 66 degrees. The area had lots of birds feeding on the squid. The ocean was flat calm. At 1:30 virg's had 15 for 15 anglers and Port San Luis had one boat return with two albacore. Bob |

I would appreciate postings of any large shark sitings nearshore. Include Lat/Long, water depth, type of shark, marine life in the area, such as seal, small sea lions and bait, etc. Thank you. |

Fished with Charles Reed on the "Mary B" Thur. We worked north for 6 fat albacore. Conditions were awsome, 64+ water, flat smooth seas, and lots of bait showing on the meter. Maybe too much. All the fish were stuffed with squid about 1 to 1+1/2" long. What lure do you use to "match the hatch" so to speak?? The bait we got at Morro was the famous "2 eyes & a wiggle" We could chum them up, but the bait couldn't swim with a hook and line. We had boilers with the boat for 20-30 minutes and did git 2 bait fish and a couple more on mega bait lures, but if we had had good bait I think we could have loaded the boat. Anyway the fish are there, ours came at 47/38, but there are lots of other areas on the way up there that have good bait showing on the meter. You just have to work the meter marks and be there when they pop up. These fish are NOT hungry. Be safe and enjoy. Jim |

I plan on going out of MB tomorrow at 0500, to the area near San Simeon to look for tuna. The boat name is Killer B's and I will be on 68. We used to fish the Outrageous but sold it for little Radon with some protection from the elements. I will be happy to share info with anyone out on the water. The new boat wont fit the Bait tank we bought last year and used twice. It is an Aqua World Ultratank UT-29. It is a 29 gallon reverse flow tank that is oval and has a small live well on the top to hold a few dines for quick access. I think we paid over $250. It comes with a Rhule transom mount pump. I would like to get $150. Call 805-431-5112 See you on the water |

Whoever fished today want to post some idea of where to start tomorrow? Latest SST shows the same break in tight then scattered water up until the 30 line. Thinking of starting at the 10/30 and working our way towards the donut. Any information on Thursday fishing would be appreciated. Dustin |

I'm not an expert but when I fish for halibut I have had success with live bait. An Owner hook thru the nose of a dine or chov with a 8 oz. sinker about 24 inches above. Just drift with the current and let them take it before you set the hook and/or start reeling. Halley alley up around the old pea fields usually yields some nice ones. The best flatties of course are down by the coke plant. Good Luck! |

Wed Albacore; Today was very scratchy up to about 4:00 pm when the bite came on for those that stayed. We left early with 3 fish to 20 lbs. Interesting story; We were fishing with Reel Deal as a buddy boat. We were trolling in and Richard was a few miles ahead of us when he had a jig strike and then hooked a bait fish. They chummed up a nice school of albacore and before they could hook a second one a school of little black and white porpoise moved in all around the boat and chased away the tuna ! And by the way this school of tuna was just 15 miles off Morro rock in that water that I mentioned yesterday. We got our fish 35 miles out on a 260 heading . |

A few albacore were caught at 35:14 121:18, about 21 mi from Morro Bay. Most of the boats out there including us got zero but I heard one boat caught 14 by 10:30. We also fished into the warmer water 31 mi out as shown on the last good SST picture. There seemed to be a lot of sea life. We also made live squid yesterday and fished for white seabass but they have left the area. I heard some one got spooled on a big tuna yesterday. We limited out on rockocd at Buchon on the way in in a couple of hours. The bait was small anchove. Bob Bob |

We will be running Friday and Saturday.Starting on the break inside the bouy then working our way out to the second break at 25-30 miles. Willing to put in the distance if need be. Hope we get some coverage out there Friday. Also hopeing for one more good picture before then to get a starting point. Last SST did show a break about 5 miles off the point .... who knows if its holding. Dustin |

Chip any tips on where and how to get the halibut. I've launched my 12' alum off the PSL pier a 1/2 dozen times and only caught 1 so far. That was down by the white rock in front of shell beach. I haven't tried live bait yet I've been trolling with a dodger/hootchie/anchovie set up. Last weekend I went in front of the breakwater and got a big ling and cabezon but no halibut. Any suggestions? |

I caught two nice halibut out of kayak in port san luis two weeks a go. The sea lions were thick chasing bait. It only makes sense the great whites would like this area. My dad is a dosient for Ano Nuevo and he told me today they have a kayak in a shed up there with great white teeth marks across it. I think I will stick to my 22 footer instead. This was very unfortunate for the woman and her family for their loss. |

Tomorrow's tuna; The marine layer has been over our fishing area for three days now. There was some clearing just off the coast of Avila and Morro Bay this afternoon. I just printed an SST (coast watch) that shows a 64 degree break just outside Estero bay and up to San Simeon. This may be the top of the plume that was 20 miles off Buchon on th 16th. If anyone is going out of Morro Bay in the morning to chase tuna you should hit this break just after you cross the 121:00 line. Check it out they may be closer than we think! |

Jaws is still in the harbor: Dustin, the skipper of the Patriot, reported to the coast guard that he saw a very large shark, probably a white, apparently chasing a seal, about an hour ago. |

Thanks for the "link"...you think it can't happen in your back yard. It's going to be hard to watch my "little guy" go boogieboarding with fins on. We do need the sharks to help us with the sea lion population, but this is hard to take. |

Two boats out of PSL today have something like a dozen albies by 11:00 am fishing about 25 mi out. I'll be out there tomorrow along with some big gear for the bluefin that were spotted a couple of weeks ago 7 mi off of Purisma. I hear the white seabass have moved and I'll be looking for them this afternoon. The attack on the swimmer caused a 14" bite. Bob

It's hard to get updated news regarding the "attack", however, it now appears that a woman was killed as a result of a large wound ("bite") while swimming off of Avila. She was apparently wearing a wetsuit and swimming when she was attacked. The Harbor has cancelled the SLYC youth sailing program for today, and I imagine the beaches are closed to swimmers. The more I hear, the more it sounds like a shark...not a sea lion. If I hear anything that can be substantiated...I will report it. |

I just heard there was "an attack" at Avila Beach this morning (Tuesday the 19th). It's too early to say if it was a shark attack or possibly a sea lion. My inclination is to believe that a large sea lion was the source. I don't know if you've noticed, but the sea lion population at Avila has become very agressive. They harrass boaters getting into thier skiffs off the 3rd pier, they do agressive runs by swimmers in the water, and they do not act afraid of people any more. We fishermen have been trying to bring this problem to the attention of authorities for years, but it seems it could be getting much worse. If it was a shark attack, well, it may be time to stay out of the water while they do the "thinning" for us. |

Tuna Time ! Now all the forecst agree that wed, thurs and fri should be 10 kts or less. Saturday could go either way and Sunday is not looking so good on the computer models. We can now be pretty sure that there is albacore (check Jim's post below) in the closest water and you can bet there is albacore in the other two areas. I just talked to Jim and those four albacore weighed 12-30 lbs. |

Fished Morro today with Charles on the "Mary B" . After checking weather we went north for rockfish. We got 2/3 limits and some nice reds fishing 80=100ft with jigs and scampi type lures, came in early because of the slop. windy conditions but fishable. At the ramp we met one boat that ran for albacore, they got 4 at 20-25 miles out on about the 35.10 line. Said it was dangerious sloppy for their 25 ft boat and they wisely ducked for cover, Looks like the fish are there, but the weather sucks. Maybe next week........ |

Weather/SST The outlook for weather out in the albacore areas this coming week shows a window of opportunity Tues of thru Friday. Not flat calm but there should be some 10 kt days. The swell probably won't get much under 6 ft. The SST and the buoys show a lot of potentially good water. There is a break inside the weather buoy, another one outside the buoy and the big one out60-70 miles. |

Seabass bite has slowed a bit but still good fishing with some nice halibut mixed in for those who put a line on the bottom. Make your squid off the bottom in the mornings and up in the water mid day and evenings. Be ready for some really large fish, up to 50 lbs. A five hook bait rig works much better than the squid jigs since you can hook a couple at a time and they don't come off as easily. Look for the fish in depths of 120 into 60 feet of water but fish up high. I have had best luck only 20-30 feet of line out, but try different depths. |

The seabass are still out in good numbers at Morro Bay in 90' of water by the 10E buoy. I went after work today and used a lucky joe to catch about 10 live squid on the bottom along with a few sandabs. With the live squid and a 1/4 oz rubber core sinker we caught 2 seabass, one 15lb the other was 18lbs. We had short bites on a few others. The ocean was very bumpy but fishable. Just look for the birds and the seabass are near the surface under them. Bob |

SST: Last evening's SST shows 60 degree water just off the beach at Pt. Buchon ! It's almost in Estero bay. Sure would be great if it is holding albacore ! I hear a lot of talk about the weather coming down but I don't see it in any of the sites that I have checked. The computer models indicate that it is coming down about wednesday. |

Weekend prospects: Doesn't look flat calm this weekend swell is forecast around 6 ft and the wind around 10-15 kts with Sunday as the best. I would expect sloppy conditions. But on the upside if there are fish in that big bubble around the PSL buoy you won't have far to go. It is about 15 miles to the edge of the break. The closest outside water is 55 nm at the elbow. There is a lot of bait in the area now so I would expect albacore in that inside bubble. |

Well it looks like the wind may lay down for the weekend. Do you guys think that water near the PSL buoy is holding any fish. Other than that water it looks like a long run to good water from Morro or PSL. |

Nice new look to this website. Good work Bob. Exciting report Taurus. I agree with you that the Donut area is the spot, particularly in the early part of the season. Went north from Morro last week and did well in three days of fishing. At that time the reports had indicated that the water was warmer there than at the Donut and there had been some reports of the fish up there. But I would look forward to a trip down to the Donut on the next go around. David "Windstone" |

Weather/SST; It is really bad out there this morning, as bad as 30 kts and 7 x 7 ! The computer models still show a break this weekend. John (PGE) says friday so we will just have to wait and see. The SST images are clear and well defined. The hard break has moved out to about 60 nm but there is a nice big bubble of 62 degree water at the PSL buoy - up, down and out that is connected to the area just below the donut. This area typically holds tuna when it forms up this way. When the wind stops we will find out! The closest break is 15-17 nm from Morro and Avila. |

hello, my name is john costello.. commercial fisher out of avila..i'm a first time poster , but have lurked for a while now..just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks to the guys that post current info on the central coast albacore... ...i'll also try and give up to date info on the albacore that are closest out of avila...i know the launch is kind of a monkey wrench in alot of fishers schedule(open and close times)but as we get towards a more 'normal' season of fishing the donut/1908/1978/ lucia bank/and arguello canyon,..it definitly cuts down on fuel and travel time to launch out of avila...deke has great bait now and is very flexable and willing to accomodate anyone with loading times... ... now on to the fishing conditions... wind right now is the main concern.. however, if we get a break(looking like next weekend starting sat.night thru ?) give the area around the donut a hard looking at... looking at the latest sst, if you make a triangle from the donut(44/38) to the 1908(26/55) then NE to 30/30, this area would be my first choice... now a fish story.... last week i was fishing blackcod about 23 miles west of purisma(about 7 miles up and out from arguello bouy)on the way in towards purisma i put out 11 jigs...flat calm conditions...around 5 pm.... saw a huge boil and turned on it...too late,,,, it was BLUEFIN!!!!looked to be in the 150# class.. before i could say ##@@! i broke off 8 lines ... pulled in the other 3 and went to rigging an 80w...short end of it was they spooked and sounded before i was ready...NOT NEXT TIME lol. .......anyway, try going out of avila when the wind lays down... those areas south are my stomping grounds and i'll always give up the latest to those that help out my local port. john |

Left Avila about 5:30 a.m. Homer said we were the first boat to launch. Headed straight towards the numbers Tammy reported for Friday. Those numbers were: 35.04 121. 42 Seas were greasy calm the first hour and a half, then got kinda snotty. Hit 59 degree water about 46 miles out and put 'em in. Water hit 60 degrees and had many double hookups from 46 - 55 miles out. Put 13 in the box and lost a few for 4 guys. Mostly smaller fish 10-15lbs, but one around 25 lbs, all on the troll as we had no bait. They were liking anything purple the most, but also green, then zucchini broom later on. We had a great time. Never saw another boat, but I guess one other boat got 11 in the same area. Here are the waypoints straight off my GPS that we got our fish at: 35.04 121.41 35.03 121.41 35.03 121.36 35.04 121.42 Pistolero

Seas in Oregon were 15-20 feet. Seas here are 7-10, and nobody is going out past the breakwall. So I don't see a connection there.

The wind and swell is breaking up that nice plume of warm water off Pt. Sal,where we caught fish this week, and it will probably be gone by the time this weather comes down. But The SST shows good developement at the Donut with water pushing 60 degrees and aimed right at pt. Buchon. So with the right conditions we should have tuna close again in a couple weeks. A boat out of Santa Cruz caught 44 LFT yesterday off of Pt. Sur. |

Subject: Nice grade 20 pounds
I'd swear the one that got away was 30. It looked a lot bigger. But they always do I guess.
Incidentally I found a 6-7 inch Saurie while filleting. It was all digested, but still intact, but you couldn't tell what color it was supposed to be. Does anyone know what color sauries are? |

Subject: Congrats Pistolero and Good Try Bob.
I was talking to a friend up in Santa Cruz and he told me the fish caught up there were peanuts. I was wondering if you fish had any size? I know it's early in the season but just wondering. On a side not it sounds like Jocelyn is having a blast in Peru.

Subject: one last post
Portside Marine's message said my boat is an 18 footer--it's not, it's 19 and a half! (Big diff, I know, ha ha.) Anyway coming back today was pretty snotty from that direction. |

Subject: New SST picture
Thanks FarmerD, I see the new SST, and if I were going again Sunday I'd head towards that area first.
The numbers I posted holding fish was not, repeat not a large area (although I think someone with bait could do pretty good there). The whole way in though was dead water. From the new satellite pic, it looks like I might have missed the good water coming back.

First of all, congrats to pistolero for the first long fins of the year. As per new SST warm 59-60 degree water at 34.52/120.56 and down the 121 line. Pictures were from middle of the day but better than nothing. |

Subject: Albacore!!
Went looking for albies today out of PSL. Took about a 212 towards the 58/59 degree water on June 2's SST. Found 59 degree water about 50 miles from PSL. Double hookup at 34.35/121.20 on a green Yozuri plug and a sardine swimbait on the outrigger. Lost one other fish on B/P Rapala. We had no bait. Meter marks in that area.

Knew it! .... 2 fish at 51 miles today out of Avila. Lets hope we get a good SST this week so we can figure out where the bulk of that warm water is. Early season chickens gota love it!

Subject: fishin
Sounds like it's still no fishin up there. Down here in Peru it's wide open YFT, and skipjack. I'll be here until the first of July. You can check my posts under Peru/Tumbes. See you at Virgs or the Ichiban Tight Lines

Subject: Albacore
I took a 218 degree heading from Morro Bay for 48 mi. The bird life almost zero. The water temp varied from a high of 57.2 25-30 mi out to only 54 at the donut 46 mi out. In the area of the warmer water there were souries (correct my spelling) about 2-3 inches long from 0-50 feet down covering the entire 5 mi stretch. But we didn't see anything feeding on them. We trolled for only two hours for nothing. then we went to Avlia for salmon and caught nothing. I only heard of one salmon. There were maybe one halibut per boat caught. With no live bait yet and no satilite sea surface temp images its a gamble going for the albies. But the ocean couldn't be flatter. It was still a very nice day. Bob |

Subject: Donut
As per last SST the warm water was south of the donut. With no recent pictures its hard to tell where that water has pushed to. Its not that large of a body but looks to be VERY warm. 60 degree water with a 4-5 degree temp break. |
