Underwater Salmon Survey at Duzbury Buoy (video)
On October 18th 2008 Bill Shelton and Chris Pollastrini did an underwater salmon survey at Duxbury reef. The aquatic fish attractor of choice was the FBR™ salmon trolling lure.
We were aboard my aluminum 22 foot Habercraft boat. We were using Bob Franko (Coastside Fishing Clubs) Splashcam and Richard Pacheo Atlantic under water video
camera and Bill Shelton above water cameras. Thanks Bob and Richard. We launched at Sausilito California and went directly to the Duxbury Reef buoy. All the salmon as well as some shots of smelt were taken with 300 yards of the buoy. We trolled at the bottom of the throttle at 25 feet on the Spectra on the downrigger. We used anchovy no hooks or sleaves were used and we had yarn attached to the FBR™ to simulate a hookup as the yarn sticks to their teeth. The salmon attacks came in packs up to five as well as some single attacks. All salmon were of a large size as generally expected this time of year at Duxbury. We ran through 3 or 4 schools of Jellyfish, however they were no problem as the FBR™ spins through them well. Overall we were very excited to see so many salmon in a very confined area we trolled as we limited it to circling the buoy. All the underwater video pictured in this video was shot on Oct. 18th at Duxbury. I hope you enjoy the video as we surely need a reason for hope on ever having a salmon season in the near future. Thank you Chris for coming a long and assisting me with this underwater filming, you were a pleasure to spend time with and surely would be welcome anytime. We ran one rod until noon then I got the second camera going for a short while then off to rock fishing. We SFD™ed 3 canary rockfish then pull up and move out to play with halibut for a while. Chris got a sand dab for supper. No salmon were harmed or hooked while making this film.
Thanks Bill Shelton

The previous video done at Monterey in March
This is the final results of a couple of days of filming underwater salmon. There was approximately 3 hours plus of film (for each camera) where we were actually trolling.
This project started a couple months back when I got the word that the Sacramento salmon return was low and folks are thinking that there is no food or salmon out there. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get some film underwater off our favorite fishing area so as Monterey so that folks who make decisions based on best salmon guesses would have more info to work with. I ask Craig Woods if he would like go with me to do the filming. He was excited about it. I started the process of making sure it was legal to do that. I contacted both Lt. McKiver of Fort Bragg and Lt. Kelly of the Monterey Fish and game. They gave me the ground rules as they were to interested in seeing what is out there as well. I then discussed it with Bob Franko and ask to use Coastside camera and then ask Richard Pacheco to use his underwater. Purchased all the film and assembled all the necessary equipment and started watching for a weather window. as I have a small 22 foot boat and like to film on calm days to prevent the camera from going up and down and not tracking the bait for filming. A few days back I contacted Jose and ask him where would he advice I go this early in the season. He then thought about it for a day and contacted that we could use his boat as he would be on the water working crab pots He said he would like to learn how to do the filming. We watched for a window on the weather. On the days we were to do the filming Craig was not able to come ask he had to stay closed to home baby sitting as his wife was out of town. I also contacted Lt. Kelly of the Monterey Fish and game and let him know we would be out there in case he received a call about suspicious behavior on the water. He was shorted handed and couldn't go.
I have watched this film very closely and the results in my opinion there is a lot of fish out there and tons of krill. We was shocked to see so much food in this early. These fish were running deep and generally in the area of the krill masses. I wanted to get the salmon to come up and fall into camera view range just so we could see them on the camera. To get a clear picture of the fish, we ran with very short 2 foot leaders to get the fish as close to the camera as possible. If you run the lure back father you get much more attacking of the lure and if you run FBR™ close the salmon lurk more as they are suspicious that something is wrong and turn away before striking. I brought out all of my tricks on this by designing a special FBR™ rig with dual mini lite stick and then running yarn for both a visual effect and have something for their teeth to grab. (No hook or sleeve were using during the filming) The FBR™was rigged with 4 pieces of yarn (two 14 inch pieces where main line was tied in the center and when double over forms four 7 inch pieces. The yarn twirls and wraps nicely as it rotates around the FBR™ and with the lights flashing with rotation gives off a impressive appearance. The second day I also bought some can tuna and we put a little tuna in the FBR™ head and cut off the anchovy nose a little to allow room for the tuna. We soak the FBR™ rig in the tuna juice just before lowering it on the downrigger. Jose really did a good job in getting us on scene and really did a good job in helping make this film. So folks now you have some of my secrets on rigging FBR™.
I hope the folks that make decision have a chance to view this film. If not perhaps it will motivate anglers not to roll over and say all darn no fish so I guess we will have to close it for a couple years, only to find out that we had a real good run and lost out because of lack of info and fear. This is just the start of it and as time and weather permit we have to check HMB, and Duxbury . This will give us a better view of the overall food supply and salmon. Thanks you for caring and please view the film and make your own opinion on food and salmon.
You and your kids future in fishing is at a crisis...You must act now, get involve. Thanks
